The 22 Restaurants That Turned Us Into Dedicated Regulars in 2018 | Bon Appétit

"Every year I find an excuse to visit San Antonio, and every year I am dazzled by the vibrancy of that city's dining scene. There are so many places to love but, this past visit, I fell for one of SA’s more old-school spots: a Mexican restaurant called Cascabel. I visited on a rainy Sunday, and was immediately charmed by 1) the colorful murals on the walls and 2) the amuse bouche of fideos (slinky noodles in the chicken-iest chicken soup) that every guest gets. I mean, I could have just eaten bowls and bowls of the fideos and been happy. But instead I feasted on chilaquiles soaked in salsa verde, and squash blossom quesadillas topped with crumbled cotija cheese, and black beans that tasted like they had been stewing for days. I have been thinking about this meal for months and months. I can't wait to go back next year. Hopefully sooner rather than later." - ByThe Bon Appétit Staff

🌮 Cascabel Mexican Patio – A Hidden Gem of Flavor and Ambiance 🌴 If you're searching for an unforgettable outdoor dining experience that blends authentic Mexican cuisine with laid-back charm and a touch of romance, Cascabel Mexican Patio is your destination. From the moment you step onto the patio, you're greeted with a vibrant yet tranquil atmosphere. Cabanitas and palapa umbrellas shade each table, creating an inviting, resort-like vibe that feels straight out of Latin America. Soft, romantic Latin music drifts gently through the air, setting the perfect tone whether you're enjoying a quiet morning meal or a leisurely brunch with friends. Let’s talk food — because Cascabel doesn’t just look the part; it delivers where it matters most. The Omelet Plate is a thing of beauty: perfectly fluffy eggs filled with a well-balanced mix of vegetables, cheese, and meats (if you choose), all cooked to perfection. Paired with house potatoes and handmade tortillas, it’s hearty, satisfying, and just the right amount of indulgent. The Menudo is truly a standout — rich, comforting, and deeply flavorful. The broth has that slow-cooked depth only achieved through tradition and patience. With tender tripe, hominy, and a kick of spice, it’s soul food at its finest, and perfect for a weekend morning or when you just need a culinary hug. The Chilaquiles? Next-level. Whether you opt for red or green sauce, the chips are just the right texture — soft enough to soak up the flavor, yet crisp around the edges. Topped with crema, queso fresco, and (if you're smart) a fried egg, this dish checks every box: spicy, savory, fresh, and totally crave-worthy. Service is warm, welcoming, and attentive without being intrusive. The staff clearly takes pride in the food and the experience they provide, and it shows in every plate and every smile. Final Verdict: Cascabel Mexican Patio is more than just a meal — it’s a mini escape. With its beautiful setting, authentic dishes, and heartfelt hospitality, it’s easily one of the best Mexican dining experiences in town. Whether you're a local or just passing through, do yourself a favor and make a reservation. Your taste buds will thank you. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Hubby and I stopped in here for a quick lunch after a Dr's Apt. There was one kind gentleman who was taking orders, making the food and waiting on tables. Our food was made in a decent amount of time for there to just be one person there, We had the Puffy Tacos and they were delicious! We will definitely be back

In San Antonio's Southtown neighborhood, where the hum of downtown fades and Victorian homes stand sentinel, Cascabel Mexican Patio offers something increasingly rare: a portal to Mexico's interior that requires no passport. Occupying a modest frame house painted in carnival colors, this 19-year-old establishment stands defiantly against the Tex-Mex hegemony that dominates the city's culinary landscape. Under rustling palapa fronds and papel picado banners that dance in the breeze, diners at wooden tables savor dishes that speak more of Oaxaca and Puebla than the border. The patio, with its weathered wooden posts wrapped in twinkling lights and festive ribbons, creates an atmosphere so transportive that the nearby urban surroundings momentarily disappear. Inside, walls of emerald green, cobalt blue, and hibiscus red showcase sunflower motifs and folk art decorations. The space feels less like a restaurant and more like the home of a particularly colorful Mexican grandmother who insists you eat well before leaving. The menu, unchanged for years, begins not with the expected chips and salsa but with a complimentary cup of sopa de fideo – a comforting vermicelli soup that serves as Cascabel's edible welcome mat. This small gesture signals the restaurant's commitment to authenticity over American expectations. The kitchen's strengths emerge in dishes rarely seen north of the Rio Grande. Their huaraches – sandal-shaped corn masa topped with beans, meats, and salsa verde – offer a textural symphony that makes typical nachos seem one-dimensional by comparison. The puerco a la cascabel features tender cubes of pork immersed in a sauce of smoky cascabel chiles, served alongside properly prepared black beans (never pinto) and orange-hued Mexican rice that bears no resemblance to its tomato-tinged Tex-Mex cousin. For the culinary adventurer, the quesadilla de huitlacoche delivers the earthy funk of corn fungus (often called "Mexican truffle") melted with cheese between house-made tortillas. This delicacy, compared by some to truffles but with a flavor profile entirely its own, is a rare find in Texas restaurants and worth seeking out for those who collect uncommon food experiences. At lunch, plates generously portioned and artfully arranged on bright Fiestaware cost under $15 including tax – a value proposition that explains the diverse clientele, from neighborhood locals to curious visitors. The lunch-only hours (10 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays, closing at 4 p.m. Saturdays, closed Sundays) create an air of exclusivity by accident rather than design. The mole poblano, with its deeper chocolate notes than most American iterations, and the pozole that locals whisper about should not be missed. But it's the pibil – slow-cooked achiote-marinated pork – that might justify a special journey. Service happens at a pace that honors conversation rather than turnover. Older couples linger under the palapa, seemingly transported to vacation memories of coastal Mexico. Young professionals squeeze in quick lunches, smartphones momentarily forgotten amid the sensory distraction. What Cascabel lacks in sleek efficiency it compensates for with something more valuable: authenticity without pretension. There are no QR codes, no elaborate cocktail program, no claims of "elevation" or "reimagination" of traditional cuisine. Instead, you'll find a sanctuary of unhurried dining where recipes remain as they have been prepared for generations in Mexican homes. In a city famous for its tourist-friendly River Walk restaurants, Cascabel represents the road less traveled – a culinary detour that rewards the curious with flavors more complex and environments more genuine than those found on well-worn paths. For travelers tired of experiencing destinations through the sanitized lens of tourism, this modest house with its vibrant food offers something increasingly precious: a taste of somewhere else, honestly rendered.

First time I have been here at Cascabel was in 2008. The food is excellent, tasty, but the portions on each plate are not very large and it is a bit expensive. It's hard to get a spot where to park your vehicle. They remodeled the place, looks good.

Google
The empty location should’ve been a warning. The food was not good at all. The food seemed reheated and quality was bad. The server was nice but food was terrible. Beans were burned and rice seemed like leftovers.

Google
Traditional Mexican food. Very good. Very fresh. Actually surprised at how good it was. The taste and the quality of ingredients is outstanding. This is definitely worth trying if you never been here before.

Google
Grateful to have a stumbled on this place! The food was delightful and authentic. Loved the blue corn chips and salsas too but unfortunately they do charge for them not a huge deal but kinda a bummer since most places serve them as a courtesy. The service was attentive, helpful, and pleasant. We will definitely return to try more things on the menu or more of their Mole!! 😋

Google
I really enjoyed the food, I only had a gordita and ordered 2 jamaicas but will definitely Come back to try the bigger menu items. I did notice that the portions are not that large and there are no free refills but the taste is great.

Yelp
Wow! This pozole verde was not only the best pozole I've ever had, but one of the best soups. Period. It was cooked and served by the owner, who was very nice! Top with all kinds of garnishes, homemade tortillas and a smoky red salsa... now that's a lunch! I rarely eat meat, but this pozole was made with a ton of love. What a treat.

Yelp
A quaint little spot tucked away across from the middle school, the shaded patio would certainly be the preferred spot for eating, but it was a bit hot so my coworkers and I ate inside. Free parking is limited in front of the neighboring paid parking lot, so I recommend parking on Pereida and making the walk over. This appears to be a father/daughter spot, but the daughter was out while we were there, so wait times were a bit long. The dad was extremely friendly and warm and apologized profusely for the delays. He was taking and making the orders as they came in. He also brought us chips & salsa, both made in house, after we ordered. We had looked at the menu beforehand and were a bit surprised to see the menu had been condensed (limited, even?). In this economy, I can imagine why. Regardless, a picture is attached for future reference. I had the chicken flautas which came with rice, beans, and lettuce. I was so hungry I forgot to snap a picture, so apologies if I missed anything! Everything was fresh, made to order, and reminded me of meals made at home. My only hang up is that I love spicy and neither salsa's I tasted were spicy enough haha I would like to go back and see the father/daughter duo in action and give them the bump up in ratings I'm sure they deserve. Cheers!

Yelp
This place is so cute . The vibe is super chill, and the service is genuinely kind and attentive without being over the top. Carne guisada was absolutely delicious!! must have!! Rich, flavorful, melt-in-your-mouth kind of good. I'd come back for that alone.

Yelp
Fresh, homemade tortilla chips, tasty salsa verde and breakfast tacos that taste like they came from mom's kitchen are just a few reasons to stop by Cascabel. Add a great playlist, friendly service and a short walk to Southtown Vinyl and other fun shops make this a perfect place to spend a morning whether you are a local or visiting.

Yelp
This is a quaint little place on the north eastern edge of the King William neighborhood, located across the street from an elementary school. You enter the property through a gated entrance to an outdoor seating area with several circular shaded tables, and then enter through the second door on the left (past the employees only entrance). This entrance dumps you into the dining area. The kitchen to immediately to the left. The dining area is colorful and small, with tables lining the perimeter. A wall mounted A/C system sits above the benched/booth seats. The bathrooms through the left hand side are not air conditioned, and there is a stand with some colorful dresses on hanging on the stand. The men's restroom had no paper towels available. You are able to choose where you'd like to sit. The establishment closes at 3pm, so if you come in around 30 minutes prior to closing, they'll let you know. Once seated, they will provide you with a menu and a colorful fabric napkin enclosing a fork. The menu is double-sided and laminated, printed on a dark background. The tables also appear to be painted (or at least coated) a certain color. You can peruse the menu and decide what to order. When you decide what to order, the staff will mentally remember your order, or perhaps they will enter it directly into their order system, which is a Clover system. When you receive the check, it will have a QR code on it, where you can opt to pay online via Clover. Food: I enjoyed the flavor of the mole in the mole poblano. It had a present anise component to it. Small cubes of chicken existed, with some nopales on top. It came is a (small) side of beans and rice. Given the size of the plate, the quantity of food on the plate was not much, whether in terms of chicken, nopales, beans, rice, or mole. Similarly, the pipian mole was also pleasant flavorwise. The chilies that came with the dishes were nice and fruity with decent immediate heat, and no slow burn. The chicken cubes, by themselves, were uninteresting, even with the mole. The tlalpeño was pleasant, but the broth itself was quite salty. The rehydrated dried peppers in the soup were nice and fruity with a good amount of heat. Since the broth was salty, I just ate the non-liquid components of the soup. Music plays in the background until closing time, after which the music shuts off. When you exit, the door handle may not respond unless you apply enough torque to it. Additionally, when you exit the front gate, and if it is closed, you will have to move the gate laterally along the track to open it, and then close it again. If you leave at 3pm on a weekday when the elementary school has been in session, and you would like to cross the street, there will be a crosswalk close by and someone with a portable stop sign, a whistle, and colorful reflective traffic visibility garb who will pause traffic in both directions and encourage you to cross the street.

Yelp
First time here and I was not expecting to loveeee it! It's a cute little patio with plenty of seating. I ordered the enchiladas verdes, and it was absolutely delicious. Tastes so authentic and just really wowed me and my husband. It came with rice, black beans and nopales. I'm so glad we just happened to stop by today. I didn't take a picture of my food because I literally inhaled it.

Yelp
I'll start off by saying I hadn't been in a few years since I moved out of the neighborhood. This place has lost its appeal in my eyes. I went on a Saturday at noon and they are strictly only a taco stand. No more plates with a Serrano pepper and gorgeous presentation, no more mini fideo or chips and salsa. We were told we could eat inside if we wanted but all the orders we at the taco stand outside where they sold only the food in the tins. The cafe de olla we got was also very bitter and didn't have much piloncillo (brown sugar) in it at all. I'm so sad to say this was a huge disappointment as this was one of my favorite places to have breakfast in San Antonio. To top if off the lady serving the tacos didn't seem very inviting and when I asked about corn tortillas she asked if I was going to get any flour tortillas. I was totally confused because even if my partner was, she would serve those and then have me wait for mine to be made inside, thus leading to cold tacos. I only gave this place 2 stars because the carne guisada I got was good and the corn tortilla was made from scratch. So if you just want tacos, then yeah go here. But this place was so much more magical before and on a Saturday off, I personally want to sit and be waited on by the sweet ladies in their traditional Mexican dresses and the amazing authentic food and plates. So sad.

Yelp
Great very tasteful food. Real Mexican cuisine. Friendly ambiance. The food speaks for itself self I will keep coming back here.
google avatar

J-Dawg K.

Yelp
Good food, rude staff. I will not be returning after the way I was treated on my most recent visit. Also, it looks like they no longer offer huitlacoche. Unlike last time, when there was table service and a proper plate, I had to order at a window and my food came out on a stryofoam plate.

Yelp
I ordered their Mole Poblano and Tlalpeno soup and my husband ordered their Pipian. First of all, I wish their portion was more. Flavor wise, I really enjoyed their mole. It's nutty and sweet. The crunchy and citrusy nopales and the fruity chili pepper on the top make the dish more interesting texture wise. The Tlalpeno soup is good. I wish the soup was less salty so I could enjoy the soup by itself. Instead I only had the chicken, chickpeas and dried peppers in the soup. Yes, I had some of the peppers. I love the sun dried sweetness. I wish I could soon find some sun dried peppers that taste as good so I can add them to my own recipes. Among the three dishes, I would recommend their Mole Poblano.

Yelp
I'd rather starve to death than step foot in this place again and have to deal with the miserable woman who works there. We were ignored and then talked to like idiots. Asking simple questions about the menu was so annoying to the employee and she pretty much laughed at us. What happened to this place? It used to be so cute and quaint with friendly staff.

Gina G.

Yelp
Excellent food!!!! Service was impeccable I would highly recommend this restaurant. Fajitas and quesadillas was spot on!!

Alegra V.

Yelp
Not accommodating whatsoever and unbelievably rude. Such a let down! Gross. Whoever the chef or (waitress?) on staff was on Monday 10/28 around 1:50pm needs a serious attitude check. She should not be in the service industry at all. I am horrified at her tone and lack of assistance. Never again. Good riddance.

Yelp
Very good taste enmoladas service is great ambiance is pretty cool friendly staff all the food taste delicious

Aj Q.

Yelp
Went early morning. Fantastic atmosphere & customer service. Felt like a mom & pop shop. Breakfast Tacos were very warm. 10/10 would go again.

Mike H.

Yelp
Really excellent food. We had tacos, pozole soup, and a pork dish in a citrusy sauce. All were really good. I'd come back. A word of warning - the pozole soup is a meal unto itself - tasty, filling and very large. Ignore the one star review.

Yelp
One of the BEST MEXICAN MEALS I EVER HAD! (Don't tell momma!) Seriously, when I think back to some of my favorite meals ever (just thinking Mexican category), I keep thinking back to this awesome little spot in San Antonio. Take my advice: Enjoy the riverwalk, climb the tower, "Remember" to see The Alamo ... BUT EAT HERE AT CASCABEL!!! First time I felt like I was in another country. From the art inside, to the straw umbrellas outside, to the wonderful people there! My favorite thing was their sopes. I wish I could have eaten more! Please support this business, so it will still be there when I return! LOL!

John W.

Yelp
Found this place by accident, just walking down the street, I'm the only one eating here. Had the Pastor tacos along with their hot sauce fantastic, generating some really good heat. Highly recommend this place.

Matt R.

Yelp
I love this place. It truly authentic and off the beaten path. This is my go to place for pozole. It's the best I've ever had. I need to order some other dishes but I get the pozole almost every time. Most recently I also had an empanada de flor de calabaza (squash blossom). I've never tried anything like it before and it was excellent. You have to plan ahead to find a parking spot but it's worth the trouble.
google avatar

Rebekah C.

Yelp
I wanted a light lunch so opted for the Gordita. The food was excellent as was the service we would definitely go back. Okay
google avatar

Kent K.

Yelp
What a wonderful find!! Cutest little restaurant. It felt like I stepped into another world - warm, colorful and welcoming. Lunch was fantastic - very authentic interior Mexican cuisine. I had the Hiaraches con bistek and it tasted as good as it looked!! Excellent house made salsa, too. The icing on the cake was the lovely waitress - truly a hospitable experience. Can't wait to com back!!

Nury S.

Yelp
Service is shitty. Owner was rude. Drinks are watered down. Food sucked. Recommend going elsewhere
google avatar

Pratyusha P.

Yelp
I've lived in Texas my entire life and I've never had anything like this! It was delicious! If you're looking for salty, cheesy tex-mex, this is definitely not the place for you. We got the enchiladas cascabel. First, we got a lovey soup that was something like chicken noodle but with vermicelli? Then the enchiladas! The sauce was AMAZING! Like a roasted pepper flavor? The first time I've had that flavor on enchiladas. They were super tasty! The beans were also yummy. The salad absolutely surprised me. It was a nopalitos salad (Google says that it's a prickly pear). It tasted a little bit pickled/like a vinaigrette? My description is not doing it justice but just thinking about it is making my mouth water!!! The food was lovely, the service was lovely, and THE PATIO!!!! It is the cutest little patio in Southtown! The patio is pet friendly (picture of my dog child as proof). Absolutely recommend if you're stopping by Southtown. The only thing I'd want from this place is drinks, but I think they might be restricted because there's a school across the street. Otherwise, no critiques!
google avatar

Nicholas S.

Yelp
We spent all day trying to find authentic Mexican food but found a lot of places in San Antonio are closed on Mondays. We found the perfect spot here. The patio was small and intimate and didn't seem over crowded. The food was some of, if not the best Mexican I've ever had. The staff was friendly and helpful. It was an incredible experience that shouldn't be missed if you are in San Antonio
google avatar

Rus M.

Yelp
Cozy place with big flavors and big outdoor patio! I ordered a birria (goat) soup ($12.50), because, well, it was cloudy and the weather called for it. The soup bowl was loaded with meat! Add a side of home made corn tortillas, a bit of cilantro, onion and a squeeze of lime and honestly, probably one of the better soups I've had this side of the border. My wife ordered Tlacoyos with beef Tinga. Frankly, I've never heard of Tlacoyos before and I've only had chicken tinga so this was quite different. A good different. Service was very prompt. Outdoor patio was room with about 8 tables seating 4-6 people. One downside; insects. But, hey this is Texas. One other thing is I didn't see an alcohol menu, so not sure if there is alcohol or not. Other than that check this place out. Happy eating!!
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
Food 5/5 Service 5/5 Atmosphere 5/5 We arrived around 11am but they still were not open (even though the sign states they open at 10am lol). Aside from that, everything about our experience was great! They have a quaint outdoor seating area with plenty of shade. Our waitress was exceptional- very friendly and engaging. In terms of the food, we weren't sure what to order so we just ordered a few things to share. The pastor sopes, the huaraches and quesadillas were really delicious. I'm glad I found this restaurant and I will definitely be back!
google avatar

Elizabeth A.

Yelp
I won't denied this a good place for traditional Mexican food, I just hope they keep consistency with their plates. Also it's a nightmare finding parking. Don't park in the street they will fine you. Parking lot next door $6 dls per hour.
google avatar

Pilar S.

Yelp
Authentic and delicious. We enjoyed a variety of items. Tortas, machacado and tacos. But the conchinita dinner was amazing and was by far the favorite. Our waitress (when we first arrived) was not very friendly and seemed put off. She was young and probably not excited to be working on a holiday. But our male server was wonderful and knowledgeable. He made some great recommendations, as it was our first time there. This made up for the distasteful welcome we received at the beginning of our visit and turned things around. In the end the experience of good cuisine and good service prevailed. We will return on our next trip to San Antonio! Cochinita Pibil
google avatar

Maria B.

Yelp
Come for the ambiance and the food. Enjoy fresh, flavorful food under the shade of straw-roofed tables. Dine among the birds and flowers in this happy, peaceful place.
google avatar

Brianna M.

Yelp
Tacos were delicious! I would definitely go back and try more items on the menu. They don't serve alcohol there.
google avatar

Onna H.

Yelp
BEST MEXICAN FOOD IN SAN ANTONIO!!!!! Everything was delicious, fresh, and clean. The service was phenomenal. We will be back on a regular basis and bring our friends.
google avatar

Roxanna G.

Yelp
Very cute place with an outdoor patio. I'm sure I could bring my pupper if I wanted to. The agua frescas were legit. I ordered the enchiladas verdes and unlike other mexican restaurants I didn't leave hating myself. from overeating. The portion was perfect for me. It wasn't greasy or super filling. The nopales added a nice touch and the black beans were delicious. I recommend for anyone wanting something authentic for lunch .
google avatar

P P.

Yelp
The food is delicious! I was in town for a conference and I am so glad I stumbled on this jewel. I was on the hunt for good Tex-Mex as we don't have much in Denver. I had been to Rosarios and Iron Cactus, and they were all right. But, this place is fantastic! First day, (yes I came multiple times ... it's that good) I ordered the Enchiladas Verde. Delicious. The salsa it came with was on point. Two days later, I cam for breakfast and had 2 breakfast tacos: Papas & Eggs and the Machacado. Again, delicious. I wish I had found out about this place sooner, I quite literally would have eaten here every meal of every day. The service is excellent. And, the space is cozy, colorful and cute. I sat in the patio, which was lovely.
google avatar

Gracie O.

Yelp
Change in ownership slaps you in the face the moment you step in the space. Hours are set at at the owner's discretion - call before you go, hopefully she answers. No sense of hospitality. We loved this place BEFORE - sad to come from Houston to such a negative, rude unwelcome "I don't need your business" attitude. I hope she makes it, but we will never be back. I'm turning my frown upside down and trying another place in town!! Don't let her ruin your day!!

Irasema R.

Yelp
First time here. I order the mole enchiladas great flavor but the only thing it was luke warm, I like my dishes hot. The fideo was good as well. I also order the horchata agua not so good.
google avatar

Carol B.

Yelp
Nice patio atmosphere . Staff was welcoming and attentive, food portions were great and very delicious I recommend the Mole Poblano and the Enmoladas, my boyfriend tried the sopes all pastor as well which were mouth watering as I do not eat pork, do not forget to taste the hot sauces with there chips, red sauce is spicy and green sauce is mild chips are not free
google avatar

Claudia W.

Yelp
I found this place on yelp. I was here on a business trip and needed somewhere we could walk to from our hotel. This place was great. We had amazing service and the waitress helped us order. Most of my team had the Cascabel pork. We weren't sure what Cascabel sauce was, but it was simply roasted peppers and tomatoes ground into a red sauce. It is not hot. I ordered the al pastor and was thrilled! Pastor is pork cooked a slightly different way. It's sliced thin and pan seared. It's always one of my favorites. It wasn't on the menu. I asked for it. I will end by saying one simple word. Tortilla. Fluffy. Soft. Hot. Delicious white corn goodness. I had dreams about it later that night.
google avatar

Del O.

Yelp
Such a cool and authentic Mexican experience. The waitress was incredibly friendly from the time I opened the door. I have to admit I was a little skeptical when I saw that they charged for chips and salsa but after ordering I can totally understand why. The salsa was fresh and the chips were fried to order. I ordered the Enchiladas Verdes and the lady said it was a great choice. I didn't have anything else on the menu but it sure did taste like the best choice. You could tell that it was all fresh and the nopalito salad, black beans and rice complimented it very well. This restaurant was certainly worth the 15 miles that I drove to eat here.
google avatar

Isaac C.

Yelp
I had a lunch meeting at Cascabel today. I've never been here, but I'm glad it was recommended. The food was way better than I assumed it would be, and the service was pretty top notch. The only difficulty with this restaurant is a lack of parking, or if they have parking, I couldn't find any signage with directions where to park. The two parking lots that surround Cascabel belong to Steel City Pops (towing enforced) and SAISD (towing enforced). After I found a place to park a few blocks up, we sat on the patio. The tables outside are well shaded with a cool breeze. I ordered two entrees because I couldn't decide. I ordered the Pozole and the Enmoladas, which are chicken enchiladas topped with mole sauce. The pozole was pretty amazing, the bowl was huge! I shared the pozole because I didn't want to spoil my appetite for my true entree. As far as the enmoladas, I wish the plate came with two enchiladas - I wish it came with three - and the sauce definitely had a hint of chocolate the way my grandma used to make. I wasn't a huge fan of the rice or black beans, but I really enjoyed the nopalitos salad. All in all, I would definitely come back to this restaurant for lunch, as long as I wasn't on a time crunch. You definitely need to plan for a few extra minutes on top of your dining experience to figure out the parking situation.
google avatar

Rich W.

Yelp
Wow! What a great find! We walked a long way to another restaurant only to find it closed. Our Uber driver suggested Cascabel and we were not disappointed. Excellent service...simple, pleasant atmosphere and authentic, flavorful, food (not Americanized). I highly recommend it.
google avatar

Yesenia C.

Yelp
New owner (Natalia) completely rude. I Used to love visiting this place and recommend it to people ;(
google avatar

Jose A.

Yelp
As authentic as you can get in Texas. It's a tiny place, but it has huge flavor. I specially like the fact that they have Mexican dishes you don't usually find in the US.

Nicole W.

Yelp
Food was not good, cold but told it was freshly made and lacked flavor. For 3 tacos and 2 enchiladas with water it cost almost $50, save your money.
google avatar

Garbiel S.

Yelp
A cute local restaurant that has that authentic feel. Parking is hard to find so be prepared , they have a nice front patio and are family friendly. The food was great! I'm a hungry guy so the portions were a little small for me but probably fine for most people. The salsas were delicious and the tortillas were some of my favorite. restrooms were decent 3/5 . Private, manual controls, clean.

Yelp
Ordered three bean and cheese tacos from here as I base all Mexican restaurants off of their tortillas and beans. These tacos came out to over $8, they were the smallest tacos ever! Probably less than 4 inches long, and so poorly put together. All I tasted was corn tortillas, as there was hardly any beans and cheese inside. The taste was so bland with no flavor. I have had better Mexican food for less expensive! For Mexican food, I definitely will not be going back.

Yelp
This place was absolutely amazing. The free Fideo was delicious. Would definitely be back when I'm in the area. Great customer service.

Yelp
So good. And right next to Rosario's which is my favorite! I tried the huarcheos and Some el Pastor... They ran out of chips because it was busy for the final four but.... Who cares. This place is super good and very authentic

Yelp
Sadly was unable to enjoy the patio as I came for an early lunch on a rainy day, but had a nice relaxed meal in their cheerful and cozy interior room. Started with awesome horchata, a small bowl of complimentary fideos soup, and a machacado breakfast taco. Every time I come to Texas, I think: Why aren't breakfast tacos a thing everywhere? Delicious. After all of that, I continued to stuff myself with the mole chicken, which came with rice, excellent housemade corn tortillas, beans, and nopales. The mole sauce was excellent and the portion size was perfect, but the chicken pieces were a little tough. (The dangers of chicken breast!) The service was friendly and quick, and I enjoyed the atmosphere. Would definitely return to try some of their other options--and sit on the patio!

Yelp
Went for lunch ordered a pastor sope and a carne asada sope. I have to say the pastor sope was much flavorful. The place inside is very small; it was hot so we didn't want to sit outside in the patio. The food took forever, for a couple of sopes and a taco it was an obscene amount of time that it took to bring out. The parking situation is bad so wherever you can find, it's downtown so yhea. Not sure if I will rerun, they have a nice patio but they don't sell alcohol which is a real bummer. Don't think I will return.
