This little cupcake place adjacent to the Mission Inn is an interesting shop to visit while strolling the outside western perimeter of the hotel grounds. Unfortunately, the emphasis on presentation appears to overshadow the quality of the actual product being advertised.
The shop is neat and sharply decorated in pinks and pastels that would undeniably garner the envy (or ire?) of Barbie herself - especially since they market a Barbie-esque little doll that could easily be mistaken for the original "queen of plastic playthings" or, at the very least, one of her pals! Similarly, orders are packed in little pink-striped, miniature hat boxes that cleverly fold out when ready for consumption of that anticipated treasures within.
Unfortunately, the actual cupcakes serve as an anticlimax to the anticipated treat your eyes have broadcast to your tastebuds. LOTS of rather flavorless frosting piled high on a cake base that isn't especially moist; not horrible - but far more of a treat for the eyes than the palate.
By the way, plan on diving into that mountain of frosting face-first since, at least on the day we visited, as no pink plasticware was available except for knives. When I asked the counter help for a fork or spoon, one of the two young ladies replied that if there was none available at the little counter across from their location at the register, they were out. (I trust they could see the 8-foot span between the two locations - but maybe I should recommend an employee vision plan.). Thanks for the help, ladies - I'm sorry to have disturbed your conversation with a legitimate customer need.
I think it's only fair to observe that this was on the Sunday of the Mission Inn Run (10/22/23), so there was probably more business than on the typical Sunday mid-morning. For that reason, I can understand the limited cupcake selection - but the non-availability of plasticware seemed more like an excuse for the staff to avoid a back stockroom visit than an actual supply crisis (and dropped my rating a star further due to their apathetic response to my inquiry).
It's a cute little shop, but the cupcakes don't seem to be the real star of the show. I'd recommend trying one before buying a dozen.
