11 Places to Explore in Aruba | Eater

"Clocking in at about 540 feet, Hooiberg’s volcanic formation is made of an indigenous type of quartz diorite and centers the island. The second highest point in Aruba, Hooiberg is named after the Dutch word for “haystack,” and is considered an easy half-mile hike for most visitors. Climb the 600 concrete steps that lead to the top where, on a clear day, you can see Venezuela, the California Lighthouse, and Arikok National Park. There are places to rest as you ascend, so don’t worry if you get a little winded. If you have the stamina, just north of Hooiberg are the Ayo and Casibari Rock Formations, massive boulders that offer another view from above. Reward yourself with a drink and a bite at the snack bar at the base." - Marie Elena Martinez

Really cool rock formations to hike around and take pictures. Easy to navigate for most people. Well worth the short drive and time we spent. Honestly one of our favorite activities of the week. Strung this stop with the Aloe farm (first), Ayo rock formations, and the ruins, cave pool, and natural bridge. Made for a full afternoon.

Must see and climb when visiting Aruba. The stair climb was relatively easy and the view was awesome. We did a Little Rock traversing on our own and it was a fun time. Make sure you’re experienced enough if you start climbing around.

It is definitely a unique and memorable place. Climbing those massiv boulders and taking in the panoramic views from the top is such a rewarding experience. Wear comfortable shoes suitable for climbing.

This is an amazing place, rich with history! The top of the rocks 🪨 were really high up, be prepared if heights aren’t your thing! Feel free to use two hands on the rails when walking down the steps they are very steep!

This is a great stopping point on the island especially if you're trekking out elsewhere already. I wouldn't say this is a place you can spend hours at (especially mid day it will be very hot). However, the view from up top is very nice and the garden is fun to walk around and look for iguanas and other critters running around. There are restrooms on site (sort of, they were locked when we went) but the bar has bathrooms across the street, they will charge you $1 but that is typical on the island. Visiting here is absolutely free otherwise so definitely with the stop.

Beautiful area! Highly recommend walking up The stairs to get a view of the entire area. The area is so calming and beautiful. It was so nice walking the entire area and viewing the rock formations. I also saw two owls which was super cool. The local that takes care of the owl and monitors the area was beyond kind and helpful. He showed the entire area and went over the history of how the rocks were formed as well as prickly pear. Side note: the locals in Aruba are extremely nice and welcoming. I had the best experience ever mostly due to how welcoming the locals were.

Beautiful rock formation and grounds. I recommend coming later in the afternoon when the tourists have mostly cleared out. Very windy- hold onto your hats!
