10 Best Wineries to Visit in California’s Gold Country | Eater SF

"Casino Mine Ranch recently added a tasting room, and while it’s only available to visit by appointment, it is a unique 60-acre property to tour. Beyond sipping mourvedres at the gorgeous house-turned-tasting room, with its expansive views of the vineyards and surrounding foothills, there’s an old gold rush-era mine still on the grounds and, oddly enough, a regulation-sized basketball court." - Dianne de Guzman

This winery is snooty. You can’t bring in crackers or dips because they want you to buy there food. So I bought their Brie cheese and it was old and hard. I asked them about it and they said it is a special Brie that isn’t soft. Strange. I wine taste in Napa all the time and they are never this snooty. They always allow us to bring snacks. This winery has Beautiful grounds and cool place but I wish they were nicer and more down to earth. Wish them the best!

Beautiful tasting room. Lovely and knowledgeable staff. We had a wonderful time playing cards and watching a rainstorm across the pond on the first day of March.

The Reserve Rose and the Vermentino are quite good for the hot summertime. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Beautiful, peaceful, and relaxing venue. Delicious wines. Such a delightful way to enjoy the Sierra foothills.

First of all I want to say I love the wine! There were 4 of us & I asked if we could bring our own snacks in & they said no! They said they had charcuterie items in a cooler! We picked out a few items & they arranged it on a wood board! We also ordered 1 bottle of wine! The total was $123! We couldn’t believe it was that much! We asked the girl to break down how much just the charcuterie board was & she said $88 just for the board! That was outrageous! They told us that we could wave 1 wine tasting if we purchase 2 bottles of wine totaling over $50! I couldn’t believe we had just spent $88 on a charcuterie board & couldn’t wave the other tasting! I will never buy any food from them again & will make sure I eat before I get there!

Amazing location and facilities. First class staff who are knowledgable about the wines and are true wine enthusiasts. They also have wines that are creative, great tasting and affordable.

Google
A hidden place in norther part of California, this state has a variety of wines that engages all your senses -- specially their rose for the summer. Ideal for events, gatherings and pop-ups -- the space has a unique modern design blended with native nature and sunsets that make your time at Casino unforgettable. Once you get there you won't want to leave.

Yelp
The grounds are stunning you don't want to leave. We were so fortunate to visit this vineyard in the summer because we had amazing weather.. the pictures on the website focus on the experience, but they don't show much of the grounds which is part of the incredible experience. The wine tasting was reasonably priced at $25 ++. We had a charcuterie board and picked our own meats and cheese, and the staff added some garnishes like chocolate and dried fruit fruits. I'm not even going to describe the wines because there were too many, but I will say that they were all good flavor and we had an assortment of balanced and complex, medium body, white, and red. There is definitely a variety and there's something for everyone. We did purchase a bottle of red 2020 Legacy, and it was far better when we got home. We chilled it overnight and when we opened it up, we let it sit in the glass to breathe and when we drank it, it was absolutely delicious. It was a lighter red with fair complexity, a little sweeter, but easy to drink. This definitely is a place to visit if you are nearby in El Dorado Hills or the Folsom area the drive out there is spectacular as well as you pass many other vineyards it's just trying to find which one suits you or the mood you're in. I was in a Northern California relaxing redwood cool kind of day mood. That's what I got.

Yelp
We love everything about CMR! Their wines are delicious with a very good variety to suit anyone's tastes and their venue is fabulous! There are so many options in the tasting area - you can be indoors, outdoors, relaxing in low chairs looking out over the pond or in 'proper' chairs, depending on your comfort. They also have a nice array of snacks to enjoy while wine tasting. I also personally like the fact they are an over 21 tasting facility so there aren't a lot of kids running around as I've experienced in some other vineyards - again, personal choice. I highly recommend stopping in CMR to enjoy the wines and beautiful venue!

Yelp
Visited during the week and it was very quiet, which was delightful. The facility is absolutely beautiful. The service was stellar. They offer charcuterie boards and/or individual cheese, crackers and other snacks. Wine is good and refined, but not my style preference. Also the wine and tasting fees are quite pricey. That said, I would still recommend to anyone to have the experience of a visit.

Yelp
WOW this place is gorgeous. Definitely the place to stop by for a tasting. $20 per tasting or the tasting is waived with the purchase of two bottles. The scenery is gorgeous and we love that it was dog friendly. They do tastings both inside and outside and they pizzas looked delicious! We'll be back to try them. Brittany helped us out and she was so nice and diligent in explaining the different wines we tasted. We will definitely be back for the next rotation :)

Yelp
Had an absolutly delightful time at the Casino Mine Ranch. Madison was delightful and recommended the vermentino which was delicious!! The tasting room is beautiful and the outdoor seating area was relaxing and beautiful. Candice was so knowledgable and recommended their Grenache Noir - now my favorite red over cabernet. Absolutely worth the trip to Amador county!!!

Yelp
The location is probably one of my favorites, from the winery's I have visited In Sacramento. Had a girls weekend, and this was one of our stops. I did not like the white wines but the reds were amazing. The BUBBLY was one of the best I have ever had. It was so delicious. We got a charcuterie board. The goat cheese was my favorite thing. Very pretty. The figs were also delicious

Yelp
Excellent wine and even better service! Best Tempranillo in the area! Gorgeous tasting room/patio and beautiful garden area for buying a bottle and enjoying the weather.

Yelp
This beautiful winery is away from the others, about 3 miles further from the cluster of wineries on Shenandoah Road. As you enter the tasting room, it's like walking into someone's home. Well, later on we found out it is the owner's home. High ceilings with wood beams across. An open kitchen with counter space and a large dining table next to it. Floor to ceiling windows/french doors brings incredible light to the space. Sigh - I want to live here! There are also outdoor seating and throughout the property, but we decided to stay inside and enjoy the gorgeous space. We tasted several wines. They are all phenomenal! My top choices are 2018 Grenache Blanc and 2017 Tempranillo, and I bought a bottle of each to take home. This is my first-time tasting Grenache Blanc at any winery or even heard of it. It's rich, buttery with cinnamon finish. I prefer this over pinot grigio. Tempranillo tasted like a Sangiovese that I like at another winery. It's a red grape that's indigenous to Spain with a nice finish. Matt (Manager) did a fantastic job explaining the history of the winery and each wine. I highly recommend visiting Casino Mine Ranch when you are in Amador. You need to call or reserve on their website in advance unless you are a member. They are currently open on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Yelp
Came to visit with existing wine club members. Had a pleasant experience. I look forward to another visit to really get to experience more.

Yelp
Wow! What a place.... Beyond beautiful setting; wonderful, friendly introduction by their tasting room manager Matt, great food and delightful wines. CMR brings the elegance of Napa to Plymouth; we'll be back!

Mr R.

Yelp
This winery is way overpriced. I agree with the other comments remarking about the yuppie feel. $20 a tasting -- waived only for one person with the purchase of 2 bottles of overpriced wine. But it was the attitude and arrogance that turned me off. After ordering some light snacks and purchasing a bottle of overpriced wine, a women came from the back and with a snarky tone said, "the kitchen is now closed." The wine pourer was more interested in drinking wine with a customer than pouring. I think the folks running this forget they're are in Plymouth and not Napa. This caught me surprise -- then I read the label of the wine "Produced and bottled Napa, Californi Quite disappointed because they have such nice grounds to enjoy a bottle of wine. Note: there are many wineries with better wine that is more reasonably priced in the area. All without the attitude and arrogance.

Yelp
Pretty new winery in the area. Lovely modern tasting room with open air feel that opens right up onto the patio. Currently the tasting room and patio are 21 and over only and not dog friendly, aside from service animals. However, once the garden area is open they will have a family friendly area serving food. Late spring they will also open up the pizza oven! Should be good! Portfolio tasting is $20/person, but is waived with the purchase of two bottles. Small meat/cheese plates are available for purchase - $24. While I think the tasting room is lovely, I feel like they're pricing for tasting and provisions (cheese plate was listed at $24- I was charged $30- and compared to Element 79, was much smaller!) leans more towards Napa pricing....and this isn't Napa! Most of the other tasting rooms I've visited in the area are at $10/person, waived with the purchase of a single bottle. There are some very nice wineries in this area that aren't charging as much.

Met the owner, Rich and he's very nice. And personable, great!! . The white wines are incredible and the atmosphere is amazing. Recommend!

Yelp
The ambience is serene and relaxing. This day there was an event so they were serving up pizzas for a fee with a performer which was a small fee as well. Wines by the glass were offered as they were not doing tastings due to the event. So we purchased a Chardonnay and a Tempranillo that was delicious and toured the grounds. This winery is very modern with great architectural vibes. There's a story behind this winery and her love that date way back to the 1930's a love story to be exact. You to will fall in love with this modern eccentric winery. My friend and I thought the ceiling was amazing we thought who ever thought of this ceiling is psychedelic cool. Nevertheless, as you walk outside the chairs are perfect for relaxing and sipping. Well behave dogs are welcome outside and we did see a few children at this event. The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. There is a fee for wine tasting unless you're a member & I believe then you can only have two guest per member. Service was on point and everyone was welcoming and happy smiles everywhere.

Yelp
The location is beautiful and the staff is friendly and wonderful. It is a winery that we would consider joining except for Napa prices at this winery. As locals, we are accustomed to paying a tasting fee and having it waived with the purchase of a bottle, which we always do. At Casino Mine Ranch you have to purchase two bottles per person to waive the $20 per person tasting fee and most of their wines run from the mid-$30 -$68. Their wines are good, but I think overpriced for the area and the tasting fee and policy are not in sync with the other wineries in the area. For a group of two, we were charged $47.18 (without tip) to taste 4 wines or pay for 4 bottles of wine. If you have the dough to burn then enjoy, if not, check out the other local wineries. Cheers!

Yelp
The space was pretty. I can't comment on the wine, but don't believe the Yelp filter that says this place is "good for kids." It absolutely is not. We were glared at by patrons and ignored by staff. Our kids were just walking around taking the grounds in, not bothering anyone or behaving in an unruly manner. I understand some establishments are not kid friendly, but wanted to make others aware who may be looking for a place to spend the afternoon with their family. We left within ten minutes of arriving.

Rick J.

Yelp
Today my girlfriend and I sat in at the beautiful casino mine ranch! Our wine ambassador zoey was fantastic! She went above and beyond for anything that we needed. Zoey is so friendly and really makes us feel at home. I'd like to take zoey out for wine and try to serve her as good as she did us! Cheers and will be back soon !

Yelp
Casino Mine Ranch is one of those gems in Amazon County that you want people to know about because it's excellent and beautiful, but you also kind of want to keep for yourself. However, I want them to continue to be a success! We had a couple of club allocations to pick up and wanted my parents to enjoy a tasting so it was time to check I out the new digs. The tasting room is gorgeous and the setting is amazing. They did a fantastic job here and while I miss the tastings at the family house, this place is a worthy replacement. We ordered a small, delicious charcuterie board to go along with our wines, all of which we greatly enjoyed. The board is. Ot large but it's enough to accompany your tasting. The Simone red, the rose and the Vermentino were my favorites but all of the wines are excellent. There are no bad or even middling wines here so you cannot go wrong. I can't think of more pleasant setting to enjoy some excellent wine. Napa Valley, eat your heart out.

Yelp
We love the wine and excellent service. It's so relaxing when we visit. You are welcome when you arrive with your first tasting. It's a place where you can go and enjoy the wine with a beautiful view.

Yelp
Wine was way overpriced and got a "yuppie" feel. Plymouth is a nice relaxed place to go to enjoy wine and we felt this was not the same atmosphere. Too bad, we were looking forward to checking the place out but not for us

Yelp
I am a proud member of this winery in the Amador county and it is so much more than just a winery. In addition to having a great wine selection, a gorgeous tasting room + outdoor space and friendly/knowledgeable staff, it often offers fun events for community engagement and it provides opportunities to promote local artists. I highly recommend visiting this place and I highly recommend joining the membership, you won't regret it.

Leslie P.

Yelp
We had a great time wine tasting. Eddie was very friendly and knowledgeable. The wine was a little pricey but delicious.

Yelp
Decided to try this newest winery and although it has a very clever tasting "truck", we were disappointed and won't return. The Grenache noir wine was very nice, others not to our liking. Tasting fees are $20 per person waived with the purchase of 2 bottles--as another reviewer mentioned, this is overpriced for tasting and not competitive with other Amador wineries. We agree with the other review that this winery is trying to act like Napa rather than offer the welcoming hospitality we enjoy at so many of the other wineries in Plymouth. Tasting took a long time too as we were ignored each time a new party walked up.

Yelp
The most gorgeous place, vibes, and wine! Highly recommend making a stop if you're in the area. Thank you casino mine for a great outing!

Brett D.

Yelp
Their newly established tasting room has set the bar high for Amador County. Matt and Mel are wonderful hosts and the wine is delicious. There are even some red tailed hawks flying around!

Stephen J.

Yelp
Received refund shortly after posting review. Sever only poured tasting and wasn't very informative about the wines or winery. Not the experience I expected.

Neeti D.

Yelp
Wow this place is just perfect- great selection and range of wines and the service could not be better. Definitely coming back !

Rebecca T.

Yelp
Loved visiting this cute and classy winery! Great vibe, great wine! Mackenzie rules!

Lauren P.

Yelp
I love the wine, the hospitality, and scenery! Such a great place to visit, both for relaxation times and celebration times. Especially love Mackenzie who brings such a great energy!

Ailene P.

Yelp
The sign in front of the location says walk-ins welcome we arrived and were told sorry we have no availability for you when there were open tables visible -he was very unwelcoming -will not return. Perhaps if he were nicer we would have, but whoever you have a greeting, the public better be nice we can go to Napa for snooty tutti.

Yelp
This is winery is not in Napa or Napa quality wine... so why charge Napa prices? 20$ a tasting and you have to purchase two bottles to get your tasting waved. The cheese tray is 30$ for maybe 3oz of cheese, 3 chocolate almonds, 1 fig, a few cranberries, a couple lines of honey, a carnation, and 8 crackers. To add meats is an additional 6$ for 4 slices of cheap thin store bought old prosciutto. Food here's is all out of a package, nothing fresh. This place is a copycat of modern wineries in Napa. The wine is average, nothing amazing. We had two young girls help us out who were very sweet but the recited the same jargon about the owners, the property, and the wine... as if they had a hand out that was memorized verbatim. When asking them questions regarding the making or the grape they had very basic replies and really no wisdom about wine. I feel this place hires very young college student servers who have no experienced in the wine industry. I notice the manager was a little rude and snobby to a few customers, it could have been because they were at the end of the day.

Flora B.

Yelp
Love this winery. Drinking a glass of the Casino Mine Ranch rose' under the Sierra Nevada stars is my ultimate dreamy California weekend. Hope to return to the tasting room soon! Customer service was top notch and the vibe is excellent.

Brian K.

Yelp
Great customer service, beautiful location, and super tasty wine! Definitely recommend going!

Terra J.

Yelp
Gorgeous new tasting room in Amador in the foothills. Modern and fresh, with an amazing history! Me and all my friends are part of the wine club because we genuinely love all of their wines. I love going to the events with pop-ups like maker's fairs and Sacramento's best chefs. Their customer service is personal and makes you feel like family. The brand-new tasting room has seating indoors, outdoors shaded with misters under a pretty patio, and there's also a lawn overlooking a pond with lawn games and room for the kids to play. Also has snacks for purchase and cheese boards to go with your wine tasting. Really love this place - can't recommend it enough.
