Cason’s Fine Meats

This place is always a hit or miss. The meat is soft but not fall off the bone. Also seems to be room temperature not even warm. Main issue is the sides. The mac and cheese will either be very cheesy, nice and hot or it will be cold and clumpy. For the price they need to be more consistent. The sides lack flavor and seasoning. The desserts are 10/10 recommended try them all!!!!!

This is the most busy black owned butcher shop. I went in there yesterday for the hot lunch and I was not disappointed. Mac & cheese was on point. The yams were amazing and don’t get me started on the smoked chicken. If I could give it 10 stars I would.

One of the best butchers in Portland. They have great cuts of high quality meats. They also sell plates of soul food and fresh grilled in burgers, etc... excellent customer service experience as well.

Hands down the best overall butcher shop in Portland. The quality of meat is amazing and the prices are surprisingly reasonable. Plus, the service is excellent and the overall atmosphere always leaves me with a huge smile on my face. Also, Cason’s sources his hormone free meat from local Oregon ranches/farms. Yesterday I picked up a couple of 🥩 that were out of this world! Thank you, Mr Cason, I woke up thinking about those steaks this morning. So good.

I treated myself to a take-out lunch at Cason's Fine Meats. I had the most delicious sweet/spicy chicken wings, and their fabulous "Rasta Pasta", which has SOOO much flavor (also spicy). I know I will be back. Thank you for your good food and excellent customer service.

I probably can't say enough good things about this butcher shop. Fresh meat, cut right in front of me. Very fair prices. Parking in back available. Place is spotless clean. Incredibly helpful staff/owners, just fantastic overall experience. I'm happy to drive and spend my money here supporting this small, beautiful business.

Casons is a MUST for their hot lunch and i’m sure the butcher section is amazing too. Truly tasted like my nanas cooking and such a welcoming loving environment felt like i was around family 💗 Such a gem in the alberta neighborhood!!!

Asked for 1.5# ox tails, I feel like 4/ 8 pieces he gave me were just bones. I really want to support black businesses but quality needs to be upheld. There were many meaty pieces. Throw away the bones without meat next time don’t sell them to people. Furthermore, on the same occasion I bought a ribeye with some intense oxidation on the one side, this can be prevented by keeping meat dry and rotated. Thanks

First time here today! Wow! I love this place. Super friendly as you can see from other reviews. And! Very funny, the gentleman, as we walked in, asked if it was one of our birthdays?! Odd, as we were not in festive dress, but it was my partners birthday! He was cutting some amazing ribeye, and that's what we were looking for--he said he got us, and wow. Take a look at those steaks! Selection is good! But, a small place can't be expected to have 100s of items, but everything is carefully chosen and fresh. I'll be back for those oxtails for sure! Also, there was a very wonderful lady there with her fresh baked goods, not sure if that's a regular thing or or a pop up, but shout out to the strawberry pound cake. This is now going to be our regular spot for great meats! As far as price goes, I would say competitive with Gartner's and even some groceries, but this place is special, so you get what you pay for. Oh, and there's a big parking lot in the back, which is great on the busy street.

Bit of a disappointment here, but I'm giving 5 stars for them being a minority owned small business. I had looked at yelp photos and the business website and was confident this black man would have the best hotlink in the northwest. I packed a cooler and stocked it with ice-packs and left empty handed when I saw it was all prepackaged. Now, this place wasn't very big, but I am going to say, it's the first butcher, meat shop I've been to that didn't have links, jerky and other smoked treats. The people could not have been nicer, but I left empty handed.

I bought 2 ribeyes, and 1 top sirloin steak and they were absolutely beautiful. The meat was so tender it melted in my mouth. I cooked them with hardwood charcoal and my own blend of spices and brown sugar. It was a great way to celebrate a family birthday and Easter Sunday. Thank you guys for doing it right!

Just got some short ribs from the hot food section. I had to get on one knee and thank the lord again for this meal!

I'm giving it five stars just for the vibe. The guy who helped me (I assume it's Mr Cason) is a treasure. I haven't even tried the meat yet (got ground beef for burgers). I'll add a review for the meat after we eat it, but I'd go back there just to BS with him. I also like what I've read about him and the community. I really hope the meat is good, because I want this to be my shop.

I got some Turkey wings for my family and they were super fresh. Customer service was great as well! Would definitely go back!

Our friend ordered food for their son's graduation party from here. While they were at the actual graduation, I picked up the order. It was ready exactly on-time and everything was hot and ready. They are involved in the local community and have a vested interest as a multigenerational business. The fried chicken, greens, beans, mac n cheese were all delicious! Highly recommend for catering a party!

Mr Cason sells the highest quality meats. He always obliges whatever I request. I have never been disappointed. He will always have my business.

Cason's is all about sustaining our community from within. A locally owned meat shop with the accent on service and quality. His products are fresh and locally sourced. I was looking for a whole Turkey in mid-summer. He didn't have any but promised to find me one. He found two free ranged locals and I was thrilled. If you talk the talk...Cason is giving back. He has young apprentices that he is training. When you walk in the door, they cannot do enough for you. This local business deserves to thrive.

Best butcher in NE Portland. Quality meats, custom cuts, friendly service, great advice.

Went in last week and bought $130 of meats. Asked for 3 New York's after I was told there was fresh cut ones. The ones in the case were brown and obviously had been in there too long. Instead of giving me fresh cut ones he gave me the old ones in the meat counter and covered them up to hide it after he pulled 4 out when I only asked for 3. I figured they must just be aged or something by the color otherwise he wouldn't be selling them to me if they were bad, so the next day I pulled them out to cook them with the ground chuck I bought for hamburgers and as soon as I unwrapped them they smelt bad and looked slimy and wet. They were obviously bad. My daughter said it smelled like rotten fish in the kitchen. If you look at the photos online, this place looks nothing like this now, the shelves are empty and there was very little selection of beef, zero chicken, no barbecue outside. My guess is they will be out of business within the next 6 months. I should of went to Gartner's like I had planned but wanted to give this place a try. He knowingly sold me bad meat at premium prices, pretty sad

After seeing the damage done from the protesters, I decided to visit and place an order to help out. Wow! Mr Casons and team were really friendly and informative. They helped us with some selections and gave us background on our meat purchases. The store is very clean and if you don't see it in the cold box just ask, he may have it in the back. I will certainly be back! We drove 30 miles in and I won't hesitate to do it again.

A friendly place to shop for meat. A clean place to buy meat. I recommend you try shopping for your meats there the employees are quick to serve you they are very knowledgeable about meat and have a variety of different types of meat. The only drawback is accessible parking spaces at the front door only in back of the store. But it's out weight the services.

we see cason's meats at the annual mississippi st fair.....i only eat a rib or 2 a yr, and zero meat/poultry otherwise.....we shared the 4 rib bones yesterday..the place was busy and relaxing......the meat was tender, flavorful, and the bbq sauce was excellent....he and his staff are so friendly and funny....we look forward to his grill cheese at the annual mlk dream run too....thx so much!

Great little butcher shop with a good selection of regular and marinated meats. I'm really a lazy meat eater. I can't remember the names of the pieces, I don't patrol the town for the finest cuts, I'm usually pretty happy to point at something through glass. So it's a good thing the folks at Cason's are patient when I remember to make the trip to the corner of MLK and Alberta and end up bewildered by the selection. Prices are reasonable, the people are friendly and in better times there's a deli counter and a great community vibe.

This place caters to almost all of your meat needs. The selection is large and they've got a little bit of everything for ya. I ordered thick cut bacon, chicken breast, pork and sausages and was able to order ahead on the phone and pay over the phone! When I arrived I gave them my name and was out the door in under 60 seconds. While I waited Mr. Cason himself was sitting behind the counter and thanked me for coming in. That's the kind of touch that makes a small business great. This experience felt extremely safe and the meats were top notch! TLDR: Call ahead to order and pay and have a safe, quick and happy interaction. Get bacon CUT THICK, it's the best bacon I've ordered from a butcher in Portland thus far.

I love Mr. Cason. He's a very smart man and full of positive energy. His shop is small but they have just about everything. I was looking for beef liver and they had it in the case already ready to go for me. His prices are reasonable and I think we should all be supporting his passion for good products. He is sweet and made me laugh; I left with a big smile on my face with all my goodies in a nice little bag.

Portland! This is the place. Outstanding customer service, amazing high quality meat. Cason's is a classic old school butcher shop run my Mr. Cason himself. They are always pleasant and can give you great advice as well. You will not find better tasting meat anywhere. What's in stock is always fresh and if it's not in-house he will get it for you... and it will be delicious. They also have a great selection of ready to eat food and a good selection of basic grocery items. This is a Portland institution, don't pass it by.

Mr. Cason accommodated my very niche request and every time I have been in his shop it has been a pleasant experience. Him and his staff are wonderful people who make the whole vibe very nice. Plus the meat is great, all around a wonderful local business that I love to support.

I am stoked to have found another friendly, affordable, and local meat shop in PDX! It's easy to get really good quality meat in PDX, but especially near the city center the prices are so high you'll have to give your own arm and leg just to get one from a cow! Although they've only been around since 2011, Cason's has their butcher shop & BBQ chops down to a science, giving the perfect combination of fresh, expertly cut meat (much of which is relatively local), along with low prices. I went there looking for pork baby back ribs for a big dinner. Although disappointed they had run out (it was 6pm on a Friday, so I wasn't surprised there was a run on ribs for weekend grilling), they still had plenty of pork spare ribs, so I got 2 full racks (only ~$2.70/lb!; ended up being just over $20 total) that ended up easily feeding 7 people. The friendly employee also advised me on how to cook them to perfection. Looking online there were dozens of different ways people recommended involving all kinds of marinades, mop sauces, rubs, etc, but by following his simplistic instructions the ribs turned out to be a huge success; thick, juicy, flavorful, moist, and nicely marbled ribs. MMMMmmmmMmmmm!!! I think they stack up to the famous Gartner's Meat Market in just about every way except for selection. They carry pretty much all of the standard cuts of beef & pork (ribs, steaks, ground meat, etc) and chicken, however definitely call ahead to check availability if there's a specific cut you need to have. I hope to see this shop grow in popularity and volume, which will enable them to carry an even wider selection in the future. Others have raved about their prepared meats, and from blocks away I could smell the sumptuous aroma of a variety of slow-smoking amino acid complexes on their outdoor grill indicating they were right. Although it smelled amazing I was on a mission to get only raw meat, so I wasn't able to try any, but next time I need pre-cooked BBQ for a fast meal I'll definitely stop in! The only real con to note is that they're closed on Sundays, so if you didn't plan ahead and need to buy meat then, you'll have to go somewhere else. Bonuses: - They have a good selection of spices and sauces to make this the only stop you'll need for grilling. - Every Friday (3-7pm, June-September) during the summer they have the Kenton Farmer's Market just across the street, making it easy to get just about any food-stuffs you need for the next week. - Plenty of parking on the street - Although it's WAY up in the NoPo Kenton district, it is quickly accessible from I-5 and Interstate Avenue (as always, Interstate traffic can get gnarly during rush hour so plan accordingly)

Cason's, wow. Truly a treasure. I'm so glad this place exists! Cason's has the best quality, selection, and heart of any butcher in Portland. Theo, who owns it, absolutely always has a kind word for my family and I when we come in. Beyond that though, the meat is really fantastic. It's always fresh and flavorful, and Theo is so knowledgeable about how to prepare it best. I 100% recommend Cason's and will continue to shop there as long as possible.

This is the cleanest meat market I've ever been to.. Fresh meat and meat packs are phenomenal! I'd come more often if I didn't live so far away. Will be back real soon bc they have neck bones and oxtails

For a bone in rib-eye to throw on the grill, 'just salt and pepper, then some butter on top at the last turn, maybe the best steak you've ever had; at home or at a restaurant (OK, there's the Wagyu w/frites at the Mauna Lani bar on the Big Island... ). This is top shelf and worth every penny/dollar in my humble opinion.

Found this place last Saturday. Thrilled. Beautiful clean full service butcher shop. Bought Strip Steak, ground pork sausage, pork steaks and marrow bones. Marrow bones cut perfectly - delicious roasted. Steak - taste the aging and quality - tender with enough fat left to flavor while cooking Pork Sausage - froze some (no preservatives) ate some- bountifully seasoned with sage and chili flakes - old style and perfect. Staff - knowledgeable and friendly, like shopping with family. Gotta go back - worth the trip.

Dropped $50 on 3 T-bones yesterday only to find when I opened the package later, they were wayyyyy beyond their expiration date. I won't be back. Disappointing.

Best soul food in Portland, hands down. It's a hot bar and you gotta make sure you get there in time because there's a limited amount each day and the menu changes but everything is so tasty! Probably the best greens I've ever had. Plus truly warm southern vibes from the people behind the counter. Cason told us today the brisket was "so good it'll make you wanna hurt somebody" so we got it and he's never lied to us yet!

GREAT PRICES, local farms, and a hometown feel in a busy city. Cason himself cut our bacon and even chatted with us and got to know our names. It was like going to a butcher shop from the 40's. An amazing setup, clean, and the meat was absolutely exceptional-- you could REALLY tell a difference. As locals, We have been waiting for this shop to open for several months now-- and it greatly exceeded long anticipated expectations. We will be coming here for our meats exclusively.

Great place to get some local meats, cut off just the way you describe. Every chef's dream. The people who work their are super nice as well. Theotis is great for conversation. And OMG the ribs. They are amazing. He BBQ's ribs every day and they are spectacular.

Ever since we moved to the Kenton area a little over a year ago, my wife and I bemoaned the fact that the butcher shop that was there was no more. Yes there is the world renowned one down the road a ways on Killingsworth, but nothing close. Then an artist had the space for a few months, and then nothing. Then we started to notice the metamorphosis from a dead butcher shop (pun intended) to a live market. Their choices are local, and high quality. Their prices are more than reasonable (prime rib 5.99/# for beef eaters). And their homemade sausage awesome! Smoked meats on sight too. Lets just say that having them open gives N. Portland a new and excellent choice for their meats. Why only 4 stars you ask, simply because i would love to see some more variety of sausages and dogs (currently 3)as their business grows. Perhaps one day enough to challenge the OTHER shop down the road.

Wonderful nice people. Small store with your basic meats and smoked meats along with ribs hot links and chicken smoked and ready to eat. We have always been greeted with a smile and helpful service. It is a real pleasure spending our money here.

We love Cason's! My family has been buying our meat from Cason's for two generations! The meat is always fresh and the staff is always friendly. Always call around the Holidays to make sure they are well stocked in your favorite meat of choice.

First time buying from Cason's, will be back for sure! The spareribs I got were the biggest I've ever seen, took a long time to smoke but totally worth it. Prices were fair and they had a good selection of meats from quality purveyors like Carlton farms. Inside was sparkling clean and service was fast and friendly.

Portland has more amazing food than you can shake a stick at, but I've never had a meal here that really reminded me of home until I bought steaks from Cason's. Mr. Cason is a master of his craft, and his talent shines through even when you overcook the steak a bit--sorry Mr. Cason, it won't happen again. Once you find a favorite local butcher shop, there is absolutely no substitute. I'm proud to say that Cason's is now mine, and I'll be back soon to restock the freezer.

Great meat and breakfast sausage that reminds me of Neighborhood Bill's breakfast sausage. Best ever! I will be a repeat customer now that I know where the store is located.

We love this place! Everyone is friendly and helpful. Their ribs are great with the meat seasoned perfectly. Bought a prime rib for Christmas here and it was great! Check this place out! We went there a few weeks ago and they were just about to close. Even though we arrived at the last minutes, they treated us well and we got some delicious ribs!

We need more places like Cason's. Locally owned and operated. Not bougie and pretentious. Portland is lucky to have several old style butcher shops. I used to go to Old Salt Market which was very nice but a bit pricey. The prices are much better at Cason's. The selection is small with only pork and beef. The customer service is awesome. They are so friendly and unlike fancy hipster butcher shops I've been to they don't judge when you get a cheaper cut or try to upsell you. A great addition to the neighborhood.
