The 7 Best Soul Food Restaurants In Houston - Houston - The Infatuation

"Cassy’s Kitchen serves the sort of soul food worth stopping by on your lunch break. Connected to a Valero in Sunnyside, this modest restaurant makes perfectly breaded plain fried chicken wings with an audible crunch. You can eat your food inside (there are a few tables) or get it to go because the plates taste just as good in your car." - gianni greene

Cassy’s Kitchen - Review - Sunnyside - Houston - The Infatuation

"Riding past Cassy’s Kitchen is easy unless you need to fill up at a Sunnyside gas station. Connected to the Valero, this modest restaurant serves the sort of comfort food worth stopping by on your lunch break. You can place your order at the cash register with one of the kind workers staffing the front. And though there’s a breakfast menu, you should focus on the plain fried chicken wings. The chicken is perfectly breaded and has a nice crunch. You can eat your food inside (there are a few tables) or get it to go because the plates taste just as good in your car. Food Rundown Wings The fried chicken skin is crispy and as flavorful as the meat. Order at least six of these. photo credit: Gianni Greene Collard Greens Greens can tell you a lot about a soul food establishment. Thanks to the precise balance of vinegar and spice, the ones here tell you that Cassy’s has this classic side down to a science. photo credit: Gianni Greene Mac & Cheese This mac falls heavier on the cheese side without turning into a soupy mess. It’s not quite the traditional baked mac and cheese you see at other soul food spots, but it’s still worth a spot on your to-go tray. photo credit: Gianni Greene" - Gianni Greene

Wow, I'm so glad we came here. Everyone inside is so nice and welcoming. I love the family atmosphere and the food! Oh my gosh the food! Everyone in there is helpful and they are so proud of what they're doing. You have to try the oxtails, chicken wings, cornbread, yams, stuffing, turkey, and the mustard greens. Anything you pick on this menu you are going to be so happy with. They even have breakfast and those pancakes looked amazing. They deserve all the success because you can tell everything they do is with love and for family. When we come back to Houston we will definitely come back!!!

Excellent food and service. The oxtails were excellent but go early because they sell out fast. The portions are good and the food was hot and delicious. The cashier and waitress, Mandy, is so friendly and welcoming. She made our first visit very special. She treated all of their customers this way. She is a jewel!

Cassy’s Kitchen made me feel right at home the moment I walked in—literally, I got a hug! The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and the service was just as comforting. The cashier, “Z,” was absolutely amazing—so kind, sweet, and full of good energy. I ordered the oxtails with mac & cheese, fried fish with fries, wings with mac & cheese, and spaghetti with cornbread—and every bite was packed with flavor. The highlight? That cornbread—hands down the best I’ve ever had! The wait wasn’t long at all, and the food came out hot, fresh, and delicious. Cassy’s Kitchen isn’t just a place to eat—it’s a place to be cared for. Can’t wait to go back!

Omg I absolutely love this little gem. I was looking for a low key spot with home style breakfast. Omg they executed In every way. The service, food, and atmosphere was amazing. I had a breakfast bowl with salmon bites. Definitely try them out!!!

Long story short: 20/10 highly recommend!! First, finding a place that does a meat and three is rare these days so I was already excited. Second, the customer service is amazing! Miss Wilhemina has great customer service and seems to know everyone who walked in. Third, the food was everything. It was definitely like pulling up to your granny or auntie house for Sunday dinner. The only thing that could have made it better was chow chow for the greens but not sure if y'all eat that in Texas. Last but definitely not least, they don't put pork in the sides!!!! They told us we need to come back for the sweet potato biscuits for breakfast. See y'all soon!

I thoroughly enjoyed my first meal at Cassy’s. I ordered the pork chops, greens, and yams. It also came with rice and gravy. We grabbed lunch to go after church service and it hit the spot. The pork chops were seasoned well, cooked to perfection, and weren’t fried too hard. The greens were tender and seasoned well. The yams were fantastic and not too sweet. I also had grape kool aid, and it was as expected from a soul food restaurant…iykyk 😊 Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and recommended it for those that need soul food to bless their souls.

The atmosphere is welcoming and clean. The was also welcoming but unsure of what’s left to complete the order. After waiting about 20 minutes I was asked if I wanted to substitute for something else or wait 20 minutes for Mac and cheese. Besides running out of food because I wanted yams as well… oh and I didn’t get cornbread .. The food is very good 👍🏾

This was a great experience! I’m not from Houston so I just googled food near me and Cassy‘s Kitchen popped up and it was absolutely the best! The service was excellent. The hospitality was great. Mandy was awesome. I would recommend this restaurant anytime that you’re in the area. The food was delicious. They give healthy portions and you leave fully satisfied, Thank you Cassie‘s kitchen for a great experience of Houston hospitality.

Yelp
A great hidden gem. Decor is serviceable but the personalities of the staff ('Z' is sassy in a good way) and the eats taaasty. I had to make myself stop eating. Portions we had at lunch were big (e.g., ox tails w/3 sides; meat loaf w/ 3 sides) oh yea, a place to go back....

Yelp
Good food, nice atmosphere, the parking could be a little better, the AC was not working properly the day I came, but I would go back

Yelp
Everything was high and delicious. Can't wait to go back and try brunch. I had the fried fish two piece with four shrimp, macaroni and cheese and sweet potatoes with Kool-Aid 10 out of 10 fish was fried to a particular crisp. Very delicious.
