Castañeda's Mexican Food

Was seeking a quick fix- ordered carne asada fries from the drive thru. The fries and meat weren’t super fresh. ~$18 for a the full size. Definitely had leftover to share with my family.

Bad place, don't go here! Ordered the chorizo burrito and it had no flavor at all, asked them what was the problem and they told me they used high quality chorizo and that's why there was no red color or flavor.... This burrito was not good, kinda small and dry. Felt like a total waste of almost 13 bucks, not in flavor town, especially after talking with them and they seemed like they didn't care. Chorizo didn't taste high quality to this half Mexican boy, who's been eating it his whole life.. And they refused to give me my money back, saying that the reason is because I took two bites and other restaurants like Denny's wouldn't give your money back... Yes they would, if you barely touched your food at Denny's they don't charge you for it...

I’ve never had an issue here, unlike some of the other reviewers (not to imply their concerns aren’t valid). I also really like their Chula Vista location off of Broadway. Castaneda’s is great because it’s a low-grease Mexican spot that tastes fresh consistently. I love the California burrito and the achiote chicken burrito too. Their salsa is really awesome as well, especially the burnt one. I’ll be a customer for the foreseeable future! Update: Came back tonight to get a set of potato tacos. They were really tasty. Potatoes were crispy, toppings were fresh, and the habanero and verde salsas were on point as always. The woman working the drive-through window was really friendly and cool! Another good experience at Castañeda’s!

Always deliver with the flavor! And give you the order how you order it, always nice and fairly priced. Portions are big too. My favorite Mexican restaurant and its a bonus that it’s 24/7 for those late munchies cravings. Also they aren’t shy about giving you extra salsas. Highly recommend.

Everything was a 10/10! All the food was delicious. I came with my family and we tried the carne asada fries, fish cali burrito, marinated chicken cali burrito, carne asada cali burrito, and hot cheetos burrito and they were all huge and delicious! All of the salsas were so fresh and delicious too All of the employees were very friendly too and the restaurant was well maintained and clean.

I went to purchase some carne asada fries and was attended very good but the food was not properly cooked the fries looked like they were barely warmed up in the oil. Basically raw potatoes strips because you can't call that fries. The carne asada was good and properly cooked. You can't cook half a food order and deliver it like that. I got it to go so didn't realize the uncooked food until I arrived at home where it is no way I was going to drive all the way back some 15 miles. I had to just pick off the actually cooked food from the plate. Very disappointed but now I know and will never go back to this place. Do not recomend getting food from this location who knows what other food they are not properly cooking and could cause some severe food contamination to people.

If you are a fan of carnitas, you are in for a treat! I ordered Carnitas fries it is delicious! The meat is seasoned well, fries could be cooked a lil bit longer but its my preference. Got it with everything on it! Fully satisfied and will be ordering again.

Cozy restaurant, food was fast, fresh, and absolutely delicious. Staff was friendly. Best thing is that if you have a craving for good Mexican food, Castaneda's is open 24 hours and staff service is always great no matter what time you go.

I came here on a Saturday night close to 11p.m. My sister, cousin and me and my daughter were the only ones there at the time so service was pretty fast. I ordered the enchilada and taco combo with rice and beans. It was soooo good!! I tore that plate up! My toddler had the chicken nuggets and fries. Her fries were also delicious! The girl at the counter was also super friendly and sweet. I think I found my favorite taco shop in Clairemont! I definitely recommend to others and will be back for sure!

This local taco chain became the replacement business when a longtime Burger King permanently closed several years ago. Like others have mentioned, the parking lot was very small. Most of its business came from the drive-thru orders even though the dine-in area could seat many people. When I arrived (and left), there were no customers inside so I had the entire place to myself. There was plenty to choose from the menu, and it was actually a bit overwhelming. I ended up picking three chicken flautas with guacamole and cheese, a shrimp taco, and a grilled fish taco. When the food was ready, I noticed the portion sizes were solid for the price. The flautas were long and smothered with guac and cheese. They were not overly crispy but still had a nice crunch to them. Both the shrimp and fish tacos were each stuffed and rested on two flour tortillas. I didn't get any condiments from the self-serve bar, but there was a variety of salsas and toppings. The restaurant kept the bar covered and chilled to 37 degrees Fahrenheit which I thought was great for food hygiene practice. The 24 hours/7 days a week operation for Castañeda's Mexican Food was a bonus because this model has become far and few between, especially after the pandemic challenges.

If you're looking for 24/7 Mexican grub on Convoy Street, this is the place to hit up. The price isn't bad for the massive portions you get, and the food comes fast and is pretty delicious! I definitely recommend the adobada fries here.

I went through the drive-thru, the speaker was loud and clear. I ordered the breakfast burrito with bacon. The tortilla had nice coloring, & the bacon eggs and potatoes inside were out of sight. They have a good hot sauce selection. My personal favorite was a spicy green, and the red. They also have fantastic pico de gallo!! Super fresh. The service at the window was very friendly. The price of burritos is always going up, so I would say this place cost just slightly higher than others. But you definitely get your money's worth! Quality, size, and flavor. Definitely my new breakfast spot near work.

Conveniently located close to Convoy. I like their 5 rolled tacos, carne asada fries and new item the San Felipe fries. The workers are always nice to chat with. Quick service quality food. The San Felipe fries has shrimp. They're open 24 hrs which I like also. Mel M Yelp 23:2

It was super early in the AM and every restaurant was closed except this place. The food was amazing, get the Carnitas plate and try the fresh salsas at the bar.

Always such good carne asada fries! The avocado salsa is to die for! They have such a good salsa bar with 4-5 varieties of salsa

Excellent breakfast burrito with bacon (subbed for chorizo), potatoes, eggs, cheese and pico. Great salsa selection. Vallarta has the best breakfast burrito I have had in San Diego but this is a close second, losing out on a bit of size (still PLENTY large!) and worse beans. It was well hashed and mixed. Connoisseurs should be pleased!

Bit late on this review but a few weeks ago me and my family found this place looking for authentic mexican food that would be too far of the highway.. we hit a jackpot here! it was a completely empty as it was 10pm but luckily the service was incredible from start to finish. the nice lady at the register gave us great recommendations and opened up the chile/salsa bar for us without us asking. the 'mini tacos' are huge and a great price, tasty meat, what more could you ask for? not to mention the gigantic mountain of hot cheeto carne asada fries. we were so happy to find this place after a four hour flight and right before a 6 hour drive home. we were laughing and just having a heck of a time, i'm sure the staff and a few customers thought were on something but we were all just very satisfied with the food. sadly the lady who helped us said there's none of these restaurants in northern california but if there were i know it would be a hit. if i'm ever down south i'll easily go out my way to try this again!

Castanedas Mexican food is so fresh and delicious even their selection of Salas, San Felipe Fries! The staff are awesome and the restaurant very clean with a very enjoyable ambiance. I definitely recommend this restaurant.

Had huevos rancheros and it was excellent and there was enough to share. Affordable and vast menu options. Great value and good friendly service. The dining room is basic but very very clean! In a sea of chain and fast food restaurants, this gem is a great stop! We will be back

Attend school a few blocks away, always meant to stop in check out the food there. Was starving one morning, was raining like hell outside. Ran in for breakfast, had the chorizo con wevos breakfast . First bite was like hell yeah!! Clean place courteous staff. Definitely going back. Bring a date with me. Good stuff Castenedas!Breakfast Burrito

My delivery order from Castanedas started out stupendously--food arrived in just 20 min, so kudos to the Caviar driver since I don't live close by! They were one of the few places still open for post-11 pm delivery, so appreciated that fact as well. Aromas muy deliciosas wafted from the bags as i brought them inside. Unfortunately when I opened the bags there were some missing items that must have been overlooked during the rush, most disappointingly my churros order : ( Two other rice/beans side orders were also missing. Back to the bright side, I was excited to receive potato flautas since many local Mexican joints don't serve them or if they do, don't have a meatless version on the menu. The flautas were flavorful and crispy on the ends but a bit soggy in the middle. I didn't care for the "guac" topping, as it was bland and too watery. Side of thinly sliced fries was cooked just fine. The house chips were outstanding. Perfect texture, salt level and featuring an ideal toasted corn flavor--I would order from here again just to enjoy those chips otra vez! Still craving churros too, so might give Castaneda's another try and hope that my order arrives intact next time!

I don't know if we were just really hungry after our flight and craving burritos after a week in NYC, but the veggie burrito here really hit the spot. Delicious tortillas. We'll definitely make a point to drive thru this place again next time we're in the area!

Visiting Mission Bay from LA area--only to find this gem about 20 minutes away because we wanted more authentic Mexican food. Great breakfast, machaca and huevos rancheros. And delicious coffee--tasted like cafe de olla. Great prices, too. Highly recommend.

Took my son and his friend here the other day as we were in the area. Great burritos, very fresh and the Carne Asada was cooked perfectly. The tortillas are very fresh and soft also. We ordered a side of chips with guacamole and cheese that was Dynomite. The only thing keeping me from adding a star is the dining room, as it is a little out of date, and a cold feeling .

Excellent service excellent food. The best California burrito the best breakfast California burrito the best Menudo Friday Saturday Sunday. I love this place! I come here about four times a week today. I'm ordering a Menudo. Excellent. They are super friendly and again the food is amazing.

This is definitely the spot to order late night food craving Mexican food and they deliver pronto in less than 30 minutes the portions are large and the food is amazingly delicious looking for 24 hours delivery and dine in this is the place to go

I work at cheetahs and get this place after work, they are always super nice to me and fast. Sometimes they may forget something in my bag tho because they are busy so double check, but it's delicious

Just visited and got a California burrito, thought it was delicious. I've been a few times before and they've always been really friendly and always enjoyed my food. The shell has some thickness but still chewy, carne asada cooked nicely and salsa has good flavor. Definitely be back again soon

I am in love with the Carne Asada Fries from Castanedas. My favorite thing about them is the fresh cut fries which so many people complain about. Maybe it's just me, but I prefer a fresh cut potato to a bagged frozen french fry. Sure, they may be soggier than the frozen, but I'd gladly take a soggy fresh fry over a crisp frozen one any day. I think the meat is very good and of the many times I have visited never had any gristle or fat on my carne asada. There is plenty of cheese and sour cream. The only bummer to me is the guacamole. It's the reason for the 4 stars instead of 5. Unfortunately this guacamole tastes watered down and doesn't taste much like avocado. I wish they would not water it down. The service has always been great. I have not had any issues with my orders whether ordering inside or through the drive thru. The staff is always friendly and pleasant. It's one of my top choice to order carne asada fries.

Open 24 hours in a major road in San Diego serving up a variety of Mexican food located off of Clairemont Mesa doesnt get any better than this with quick and friendly service! I dropped in today looking for a quick bite to fill me up and thats exactly what I got! They have a wide variety of food serving everything from breakfast, combination platters, and some good ole burritos and tacos! I went ahead and opted for the California burrito because I noticed their slogan was " Home of the Carne Asada Fries" so I had to see what the hype was about so instead of eating a plate full of fries and meat and cheese what better way is it to just get it inside a flour tortilla? The staff greeted me promptly as upon entering and asked me how my day was going so from the get that is always a plus and I went ahead and ordered the food. Within minutes the food was done and I was asked if I would like red or green salsa or just both so I went ahead and got the red. After taking out my burrito of the bag and noticing 4 red salsas I was getting excited to smash this thing so after snapping my pictures quick time first bite it was what I imagined. It was a nice lardy flour tortilla filled with nice small cuts of carne asada laced with onions, tomatoes, and cilantro with stringy ooey gooey cheese which wasn't your typical processed cheap cheese but on another lever of greatness! While devouring the first bite I came quick to notice what was the star of the show which was the french fries! They were not your average frozen crispy fries which usually goes from bag to fryer but on a higher level of fresh crisp potatoes that had been cut and deep fried to perfection that were highly seasoned! The freshness and saltiness of the fries added immaculate flavor to the burrito and complimented it very well! The burrito was your average size stuffed and loaded to perfection but I also feel other competitors stuff theirs just a little bit more where at this location is on the lighter side with the same price value. It was a great experience and I'm already definitely thinking about trying those fresh sliced potatoes under a layer of fresh nicely sliced juicy carne asada with cheese, tomatoes, onions, limey cilantro with Mexican de crema when I return for the real deal of carne asada fries!

So disgusted, I was so hopeful that these would be amazing and a few bites in I already found a white hair that was a couple inches long. I threw it to the side and decided to hope it was just a simple mishap......not even 2 bites later I find a piece of long hair and as I pull it out I find a bundle or knotted up hair mixed in the food. Would not recommend and never going back.

Worst taco shop ever food is cold and small ass burritos not worth it at all Will not be coming back here the salsas have no flavor it's just pure water nasty asf!!! If you looking to order late night after 12am don't highly recommend don't They messed up my order couldn't even eat half of it cuz it was cold and chewy ! Find a new cook god damn

Ok last time I went they gave me a cold ass plate I was kinda mad cus it was my lunch time I went in today and my bean and cheese was cold I drove down the street never again they use to be good now it's crap

I'm sorry, i wanted to give this place a shot but this place is just not good. I just had a carne asada burrito from this place and it was the most bland flavorless carne asada burrito i've ever had. Not only did it taste bad but it left a bad after taste in my mouth. I know this place is open 24/7 but you're better off going somewhere else.

I have tried this place three times!!!!! The first time it was decent, the next two times where horrible, all three times I've ordered a carne Asada burrito and two of those time which were the last two my burritos had a massive amount of grease, by the time i was down to the middle it was just oozing grease. Unfortunately i won't be coming back. Customer service is subpar.

Never again !!! I order pollo asada nachos with extra cheese..... There was literally no cheese or sour cream. Maybe half a tsp of guac and old ass tomatoes on it . No onions or cilantro? Just meat and beans and tomatoes that's gross!! And I asked for extra cheese and there wasn't even the amount there was suppose to be on it. What are y'all doing in the kitchen smh please get it together now y'all know better than to try to give someone that! And the salsa that green salsa verde is forsure old because why is it almost brown please smh

This place has changed. We frequent here after the bar and When it's correct it is really good HOWEVER This has been like the 15th time they have messed up our order AT LEAST. This particular time we Paid for guacamole and did not receive it which is no biggie I guess but other times the food has been completely wrong where we couldn't eat it at all. As if economy isn't bad enough.. I like to pay for things I don't get and can't eat. *thumbs up* At least if you order delivery you get a refund for what you didn't receive! Please check your order before you leave!!

My wife and I come here quite often. A few times a month. We like to come on Sunday for the breakfast. The Chilaquiles are amazing. The Carne asada and Adobada are great. The best thing about this place, is it's family owned and the customer service is amazing.

Needed a munchie meal at 12am and this was one of the only appealing options to choose from and it did hit the spot at 12am but still disappointing. Got the carne asada fries and the chicken torta and the torta was the disappointing part. It was very dry and small and had no type of flavor what's so ever that not even the salsas could save it. The fries however were way better and held me over. Wouldn't recommend during the day when there are many other options open but perhaps for another 12am meal.

They are open 24 hrs. Major plus! But super tiny parking lot makes the drive thru your only option. Ordered: carne asada chips: good, crispy chips. Plenty of toppings. Rolled taco combo: way too much lettuce on these. Made them soggy. Wish they used cotija cheese and not shredded. Guacamole (on all the dishes) was watered down. Beans were good. Rice wasn't very flavorful. Cali burrito: the French fries were really undercooked and not crispy at all. It was like getting a fry light at In-N-Out. Doesn't work in a burrito. Salsas were okay. Green better than red. I'll be back to try their breakfast burrito but other than that Lolita's is still my fav Mexican food place.

I drive thru this place every week and get the same 3 items, but after today I will longer buy anything at this location. My to go place for Carne asada fries until today. They had the best in town but switching to McDonald's style fries doesn't cut it anymore. The original fries were 5 times larger and tasted good. Today I got a box full of soggy soaked oil fries. WTF, don't cover craps with the good stuff and say it's done. The salsas are good, and they don't charge for hot carrots so they get an extra star. I know people should get a second chance, but your regular customers are the ones who spend the most and support you. If you cut corners to save on time and money you lose. I had 3 cars in front of me, so that's no excuse for soggy ass oil drenched fries. Fries are crisp and soft in the middle with very little oil left. Your help wanted sign might hire a better cook in the kitchen, for me I'll drive an extra 10 minutes to go Cotixan or Vallarta.

Never disappointed in anything ordered here. I am able to call ahead to reduce wait time and the prices aren't extremely high like other spots nearby.

I tried their rolled tacos and a beef taco for dine in. The rolled tacos were really good. They were a little bit bigger than the standard rolled tacos. The beef taco was good but not as good as the rolled tacos. The taco shell did not look right but was tasteful once you got into the middle of it. Service was quick and efficient. It was a slow night so my food was delivered to me. I can see it where your name or number is called out during the day. Parking is a little tight but they have a long drive way for the drive thru. Plenty of seating inside from when it was a Burger King. Open 24/7 which is nice as there are not many 24/7 places in the area considering its location.

Food here is always good! I work right by here, so I go all the time. Another reason to go, everyone that works here is always so nice and polite. Thanks guys!

Went in the drive thru to place the order it went good the order was flesh and it tasted good the guy forgot to give me sauce and napkins, but it was correctly quickly. Customer service thumbs up:)

I come here all the time. Paid extra for guacamole and sour cream on a burrito and it was not on the burrito. When I call I am told I have to drive all the way back for them to check because the cook said he put it on when they clearly didn't. From the response of the staff they lost a loyal customer. This is the 2nd time they forgot to add something I paid for

My family and i love this place! It has become my go to taco shop. Every time I've been there the service was top tier. Like seriously, I barely post reviews for food places but you're worth it. Your food is that delicious classic San Diego taco shop goodness. The taste of my childhood lol! And woah, your salsa verde is one of a kind, love it! Late-night drive thru, yes please! Will keep coming back for my Conga burrito with grilled chicken again and again and again. To all the other various taco shop and fast food drive thrus. While many of you are nice, go here and learn how to be a champ of customer service! Love you guys and gals! Stay safe and happy holidays!!!

Spent a couple days in ER and just needed something to eat... Unfortunately, I decided to come here, WHAT A MISTAKE... I couldn't even eat this BS. Yuck

The worst pace ever I told to the lady Elizabeth 5 times NO Cheese!! No cream!! 5 time to make sure and they still did get it and pot cream and cheese. The attitude of Elizebeth was the worst I ever get!!! Never going to buy from this place again ever!

Used to be my go to place until a few days ago. Got really bad food poisoning and still feeling the effects from it. Doctor said most likely someone had a virus and didn't wash their hands after using the restroom. Won't be going back here.

Well Day of Visit : February 28 , 2021 And it was a Sunday but it was not busy at all so There was no lines and still no Dining in but Takeout and Drive Through was opened and There was one car ahead of me in the drive through so I decided on going for it and giving this Restaurant a try !! Now I drive up and place my order and I ordered the Carney Asada Burrito and 5 Roll Tacos with Guacamole and Cheese . And I was waiting for my order just with one car ahead of me . I had to wait almost 45 minutes in the drive through !! I did not know it took this long !! But there was a sign up saying Help Wanted !! So I guess there were not enough people working !! But please don't make your customers wait to long !! It would help !!! Now Finally got to window and it did not take as long but was ask how many Salsas I wanted so I got 4 of the Red and 4 of the green salsa . Now the prices here are not that expensive compared to others for both my Carney Asada Burrito and roll tacos it came to 14 dollars and some change !! Now I grab my food and once I got home to eat I noticed there Carney Asada Burrito has shredded beef inside of it and A tad more salty then other Mexican Restaurant Carney Asada Burritos !! But still was pretty good !! As for the Roll tacos it was same compared to most !! As for location it is located across the Street from Cheetahs Adult Club on Clairemont Mesa Blvd !! But parking can be a pain the lot is not to big !! Overall It's an good Mexican Restaurant and I Shall return and enjoy again !!

The San Felipe french fries here are definitely going to be the best fries you get in town. I also love that they are open 24 hours as many other restaurants in the area are closed by then except for chain restaurants. Great for a late night snack or if you want a cheap large soda. They have a great service and have never missed my order.

Best fast food taco shop in a 14.2 mile radius. Yes even better than Lollita's. I've been here a lot and I have never got that grisly chewy Carne you get at some other taco dumps. Ps-The brownish salsa is fantastic.

Writing this review from the parking lot because I was blown away. I think this place comes close to some of the best taco shops with their food, and far exceeds other options in customer service. I came in late (11pm) and told the cashier I have no idea what to get, but I was tired of my gross fast food kick. He explained that all the food here is fresh and made in-house plus they cook without lard. Love these facts but also loved that he took time to explain it all to me. I ordered the Cali burrito (his recommendation) and it was so good. Stuffed full. Tasted great with the creamy green salsa they have in the salsa bar. The meat was very tender and fresh. And I got chips for dining in. The chips had nice flavor. The cashier made sure everyone dining was taken care of and came across as really passionate about making customers happy. I am very full and will definitely be back!

DO NOT EAT HERE, unless you want to spend the next day hunched over the toilet. I ordered the carne asada burrito, and to be fair, it tasted pretty good. However... I woke up at 6:30 a.m. the next morning with one of the worst stomach aches of my life, and spent the next hour in the bathroom. Any restaurant that gives its customers food poisoning should be shut down!

Ordered a plain cheese quesadilla and the jack cheese tasted spoiled have felt sick to my stomach all day today. Best to avoid if possible.
