The Best Things to Do in Brittany, France—From Seaside Castles to Chic Oyster Bars

"In the chic seaside town of Dinard, Castelbrac Hôtel and Spa is a resort that resembles a vast Scottish castle, with sweeping views of Saint-Malo Bay’s sparkling, blue-green water. The property, dating back to 1865, was renovated with nautical meets Art Deco decor. It features 23 unique rooms, a Michelin-starred restaurant, a spa, a crystalline pool, and a private tour of the bay via the hotel’s wooden speed boat."

Just an incredible incredible place. Hard to know where to start. The hotel itself is beautiful, rich in history and with an incredible and varied design aesthetic. At the same time, the hotel manages to balance luxury accommodations with a very down to earth and familial feel that truly makes you feel welcome. It’s clear the staff take great pride in the hotel. The breakfast is delicious with all sorts of local delicacies and the coffee is excellent. We were VERY sad to leave. Cannot say enough positive things about Castelbrac.

A truly amazing hotel situated in the best location in Dinard, right next to the beach. We experienced the warmest service here out of all our stays in France, including visits to three other five star properties. The room was thoughtfully laid out and comfortable, offering a peaceful and tranquil ocean view that we deeply appreciated. If we had any suggestions, they would be to include conditioner in the bathroom amenities, remove the wall to wall carpeting, and better maintain the pool area. However, these points are minor and mostly reflect personal preferences. Overall, a wonderful stay!

We had what was probably the best room in the hotel (#16), on the very top of the original aquarium tower. We had a large balcony overseeing the bay/boats. At first, we loved the room and were already making plans for a nice breakfast on the balcony and to returning next weekend for a calm weekend away, but then… ||Positives: |- Nice small property, ~23 rooms. Historic building. The original rock walls everywhere are just beautiful. |- The lap pool is small but nice to swim a bit. ||Negatives:|- Service lacks the 5-star touch. As Hyatt members, we were very disappointed. |- Check out time is 11am, even though the app and our reservation said 12pm. The front desk was even annoyed when we mentioned that our reservation stated noon as the checkout time. Having paid for the most expensive room in the hotel, a surprise 11am-check out time was disappointing. |- There was a very loud party that was open to the public that started at 6pm and went until 11:30pm in the large veranda next to our balcony. The cleaning of the space continued until 12:30am (clanking of glasses, equipment and chairs being moved). When I told the front desk that we got very little sleep because of the party, they simply didn’t care. They did as if they didn’t hear me. More importantly, we weren’t warned that there would be a hotel party open to the public next to our balcony. The lack of courtesy! We were in our robes or changing, and the people were there in front of our windows. Paying for a sea view and having to shut the curtains and close the windows was not what we had in mind for a calm weekend away on the beach. |- Beware: That veranda is open to the public all day, every day. People who are not hotel guests come and go to take pictures of the bay, while peaking at your room windows (which look directly into toilet, bed). |- There is no fitness room. |- Other than the small lap pool, there are no other amenities.

A fabulous hotel and restaurant. We were impressed by the building - lots of fascinating, twisty stairways - the views and, of course, the staff. From the moment we arrived we felt special and nothing seemed to be too much trouble. Every member of staff seemed to be bilingual so as a British tourist with a little French it was great to have a safety net if I got out of my depth. This all came together wonderfully at dinner where we were spoken to mainly in French, they are kind enough to ask which you'd prefer, except for the sommelier who I asked to speak in English as I would learn more about the wine pairings that way. This all worked wonderfully and what was amazing was that every member of staff remembered whether they were meant to be speaking English or French throughout. On the subject of the restaurant the food, ambience and service were all sublime. With a Michelin star one has high expectations, the Pourquoi Pas exceeds them. One of the best restaurants we've eaten in in recent years. Unusual ingredients, expertly blended and fascinating wine pairings... mead with the cheese course was a first for me and worked beautifully. Be warned though, the restaurant has around ten tables which is not enough to seat all guests so I strongly suggest booking a table when you make your hotel reservation if you want to eat here. You won't regret it.

While this hotel is extremely well located it is not a true five star experience.||Reasons: inadequate service at breakfast. Three days: gluten free bread day 1 inedible, day 2 -- tried harder and passable, day 3-- good.... and not enough. Served to everyone without any notation so when I asked for a second slice of toast I was told there isn't anymore! Unheard of! Breakfast was so poor that we canceled our reservation at the Michelin starred restaurant for dinner!||Coffee orders: macchiato.... took 3X to get it right 2 out of 3 days|Gluten free bread-- disastrous|Omelette orders mixed up! ||Room-- great view-- but--| bugs.......no a/c in bathroom or WC!||Check in, the person who assisted us knew very little (even about opening the bathroom shades! ||Concierges in the evening were lovely.||Overall, management is lacking. We complained, yet there was not even a follow up from owners a week later!

This is an amazing charming place. |Withe a service like you can hardly find in Europe.||The rooms all have a nice view. |The breakfast is outstanding. ||The 1* restaurant is losing itself in too complexe disches. But the view and service make it a memorable experience.

Me and my husband spent two nights in Castelbrac for our honeymoon this summer. It was just the perfect spot! The staff was very kind, extremely attentive to our needs, and the place was of outstanding beauty. We also had dinner in the restaurant, one to remember. The food was exquisite, and the dinner an fine experience for the eyes and tastebuds. Can only recommend.
