Iconic Pub Chain Wetherspoons Is Opening Its First European Branch In This Popular Holiday Destination

Located next to the non-Schengen Zone departure gates at Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernandez Airport, this new Wetherspoons pub is aimed primarily at Brits heading home from their holidays and is expected to do a roaring trade. Spanning more than 1,000 square feet and named after the nearby Alicante Castle, it will serve thirsty travellers seven days a week from 6am until 9pm from its opening on January 29. The place offers a chance to experience a bit of British pub culture in the airport, with food options including English breakfasts, pizzas and burgers, alongside some Spanish dishes like prawns and omelettes. The CEO Tim Martin says he is very much looking forward to opening this first overseas branch and believes it will be popular with people travelling home from Alicante Airport. - Annie McNamee

You have two options to reach the castle: you can take the lift, which is the easier route, and it brings you straight up through a tunnel. The castle itself is absolutely beautiful, offering perfect panoramic views of the entire city. There’s quite a bit of walking involved, but it’s completely worth it. It can get windy at the top, though it’s not cold. The photo opportunities are amazing, and the history of the place is incredible. This is definitely a must-see if you’re visiting Alicante.

Definitely worth a visit, you can either walk up (not recommended) or use the lift (just short of €3 euros), we went in Winter and it was quiet but I can imagine a long wait in warmer months and the walk from the entrance to the lift is underground and still a fair distance. The castle is lovely to walk around though and in a city bereft of attractions it’s a definite must I feel with superb views. You can only take the lift one way though so be prepared to walk down but you end up in El Barrio which is beautiful so worth it.

Visiting Santa Bárbara Castle was an incredible experience! The moment I reached the top, the view took my breath away, a perfect panorama of the sea, city, and mountains all in one frame. The castle itself is beautifully preserved, with a rich sense of history in every corner. I loved walking through the old stone paths, exploring the towers, and just taking in the peaceful atmosphere. It’s the kind of place that makes you pause and appreciate where you are. Whether you’re interested in history, photography, or just want to enjoy a stunning sunset, Santa Bárbara Castle is absolutely worth visiting. I left feeling amazed and grateful for the experience.

A stunning fortress with a rich history. You have three ways to get up: walk (great exercise but tough in summer), drive (there is parking), or take the lift from the beach level. I recommend going just before sunset—the golden hour light over the Mediterranean is unforgettable. Inside, there are interesting exhibitions explaining the history of the city. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes because there is a lot of walking on uneven stones. Highly recommended! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Impressive castle looming over the city, extremely well preserved with superb views, well worth visiting. A few rooms to visit with clearly labelled displays. Cafés, gift shop and toilets on site. Uneven surfaces and steep climbs to be aware of. Added bonus that it's free to enter!

No visit to Alicante is complete without a stroll up the zigzag path to Santa Barbara Castle. Views are breathtaking. A few interesting displays in the rooms on the upper level. We were lucky to have a perfect view of the castle from the balcony of our accommodation. There is a lift if you prefer that but there can be long queues for the lift.

We visited Castillo de Santa Bárbara in Alicante two weeks ago and absolutely loved it. We climbed all the way up and explored every corner of this impressive fortress. The scale of the structure is remarkable, and the views are simply incredible — sweeping panoramas of the sea, the city and the mountains from every direction. Walking along the ramparts and through the old courtyards gives you a real sense of history. Overall, it’s one hell of a good place to visit and a true highlight of Alicante.
