Gift Ideas From Around the World: The Best Presents Our Travel Editors Have Ever Received

"Imagine my face when I crossed the yard of the castle and saw about 50 friends appear, including the entire Condé Nast Traveler Spain team, singing happy birthday among endless balloons. It was just the beginning of three days of party, music—there was even a concert—and fun. Now, every time I go back to the castle, I remember that day."

Castillo del Buen Amor (Salamanca, Castilla y León) 4 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Now this is a castle. Not just an aristocratic residence, but a proper fortification, whose heavy stone walls contain a remarkably elegant and comfortable luxury boutique hotel. The castle itself dates back to the eleventh century — that’s a thousand years — and it’s necessarily seen a multitude of different uses during that time. And while it’s been owned by a single family since the Fifties, they’re enthusiastic to share it; the restoration was done largely in the public interest, and there’s no better way to allow modern people to experience it than to let them sleep in it for a night or three." - Tablet Hotels

Castillo del Buen Amor | Best castles to stay in

"This imposing 11th-century fortress, with an enormous moat, has been the home of both Catholic monarchs and powerful bishops; it’s featured in centuries of political intrigue and warmongering. Today, it’s a more tranquil 4-star hotel, beautifully restored to retain even the smallest, original architectural detail. The gardens include a medieval maze and vineyard. " - Matthew Roach

Exceptional once in a lifetime experience. Very beautifully restored castle was incredible. The staff were attentive and the owner Pilar was amazing. We did the wine tasting and Pilar couldn’t have been a better host, she took her time explaining the history of the castle and genuine love for the future of the vineyard and hotel. |The large pool was a welcome addition. Lovely to relax around and soak up the atmosphere. Everything clean, comfortable and well maintained. |Our balcony overlooking the pool and countryside was amazing.

I was here for a 30th anniversary of a business event. What a fabulous venue. A restored castle, so there are some wonderful idiosyncrasies, like ducking through little passageways, and no two rooms being alike that simply add to the charm of the place. It was built as a gift of love many centuries ago, and we had a tour of the castle with a history lesson about the various paintings, etc. We were also treated to a tour of the winery, followed by wine tasting (drinking, actually), and we all drank a lot of the castle wines over the three days the 50 or so of us were there. The couple running it are lovely and took fabulous care of us throughout. Breakfast was plentiful and diverse. Definitely something for everyone, and our evening meals were high quality with friendly and attentive service. They're self-sustaining as they have their own well for water, use a ground source heat pump and generate their own power for their moderate heating, and cooling needs. They have a living maze with hedges for walls and a pool, which was bracing in early June, but would probably be toasty in August. We had a day out in nearby Salamanca, too, which is well worth a visit for hams and little green frogs!

THE GOOD|Stunning castle - looks just like the pictures with a lovely pool actually in the ‘moat’! |Plenty of sunbeds and shade around the pool. Towels provided. |Staff super friendly and helpful (except Lidia)|Dinner was good. Drinks very reasonably priced.||THE NOT SO GOOD|Welcome was poor by a lady named Lidia who was unfriendly and unhelpful; arriving at 2pm, we had previously been told our room might be available from 2:30pm - no, she said, only 4pm. Our baggage was then dumped outside our room ‘to be’ where we stood for a while until we were let in by a cleaner!! The room was ready at 2pm and Lidia hadn’t even bothered to check. Suggest she attends a Customer Training course and is not allowed to work anywhere where she interacts with the public.||Breakfast was poor - lots of choice but mediocre quality.|Cleanliness could be better on the terrace; bird droppings on seats and rail.|WiFi poor in rooms but then it is a castle with 3m thick walls!!||Watch out for noisy large groups with kids coming up to the weekend - probably for Weddings on Saturday so steer clear of Friday - Sunday… if you can!||Pool needs some TLC as peeling in places and needs to regularly skimmed throughout the day. ||Overall a 5* place just need to sort the small things out!

This is a truly amazing place to stay. Located about 25km from Salamanca it’s more than a hotel, this is an historic monument and it just oozes charm, character and a phenomenal unique ambiance. We were warmly welcomed, our room was huge and we were encouraged to take a tour of the fascinating building, a real privilege. All the staff were friendly and helpful, especially the young woman who served our delicious breakfast. ||We ate dinner in the bar as we were travelling with our dog but the food was excellent and there was plenty of it! Breakfast was exceptional. (Great eggs!) ||I would have to say while the public areas are truly stunning the room we stayed in was rather dated. There was no coffee machine or the facility to make tea. There was a tiny TV and a fridge that only contained two plastic water bottles. The bathroom was functional but as with the room overall, in need of modernising. None of these criticisms ruined our stay but it would be an even better hotel if they were addressed. ||In our opinion this hotel “accepts” dogs, but doesn’t “welcome” them. If you are travelling with a canine companion be aware that your dog is not permitted in most of the hotel. While for many this is ok, for us this wasn’t good enough. It would be better for the hotel to publicise these restrictions more clearly for full guest transparency. ||Overall this is an exceptional hotel, a fantastic place to stay and a memorable experience.

How often do you get a chance to stay in an authentic castle? I loved everything about my stay in this unique and historic property. The posada has been thoughtfully retrofitted with modern conveniences, comfortably furnished and decorated, and is located in a serene country setting surrounded by vineyards. Birdsong fills the air. Plenty of parking. Staff were pleasant and well-trained.

Thus was our third leg stop on our way to the Algarve (Portugal). It was a slight detour off the main route but we were wanting to try somewhere different to another 'corporate' hotel.|It looks as though visitors are welcome to tour the hotel and grounds without any charge so as residents we were effectively in amongst them which was a quite distracting. |We had a dog friendly room which was spacious, warm and accessed externally (No23). Actual cold water was in short supply in the bathroom.|We booked in the restaurant which only opened from 8pm when we were there and breakfast from 9.00am which was too late for us as we were already on our way so never sampled it. The 'Cafe' is small and can get quite busy as visitors passed through. The cheese / meat platter board was excellent and enough to keep us till we had dinner later.|Great to see an old historic castle still in use though for a slightly different purpose. Try the local castle grown wine. We would stay again.
