A wonderful speak-easy style bar with amazing cocktails, but the "bouncer" at the door ruined our whole experience.
As a pair of 2 girls, we made our way to the bar at around 10PM for some night-cap cocktails after a concert. The bar is in a dimly lit street with a few people hanging around the bar entrance.
Not expecting a bouncer for a small speak-easy establishment, I went to open the door myself to enter. It was then that a large man, which I had not noticed until that moment, pushed my hand away from the door. There was nothing to indicate he was a bouncer: no uniform, armband, or visible identification.
He stepped into my space and spoke to me in an aggressive tone. When I calmly explained that I hadn’t seen him standing off to the side in the dark, his tone only grew more confrontational in a way that, frankly, I doubt he would have used with a man.
I tried to defuse the situation by apologizing, and he eventually let us in, but the encounter left us both deeply uncomfortable. We stayed for just one drink before deciding to leave.
It’s a real shame, because once inside, the setting is lovely and the cocktails are fantastic. I would be open to coming back to try more cocktails, but I will come accompanied by a man next time to prevent being treated like that at the bar entrance.
I hesitated to write this review, but I think it’s important for the owners/staff at Castor Club to be aware of how such interactions can negatively impact an otherwise great cocktail bar.
