Pastel de Nata Has Become a Symbol of Overtourism in Lisbon | Eater

"Born in Porto and later expanded into Lisbon, Castro Atelier produces around 2,000 tarts per shop per day under strict protocols — each tart weighing about 24 grams and baked at 400 degrees Celsius — aiming for a crisp shell without burning and a less-sweet, velvety filling, a technical approach the brand frames as necessary to present the pastel de nata as an elevated ambassador of Portuguese gastronomy." - Rafael Tonon

One of the best bakeries I’ve been to in Portugal, where I tried Pastel de Nata. The pastry was fresh, with a crispy crust and a creamy filling. The atmosphere is cozy, and it’s nice to sit with a coffee and enjoy the dessert. Highly recommend if you want to try an authentic Portuguese treat!

Popped in with curiosity after seeing a line out the door. I’d tried the two other top pastel de nata places and enjoyed, but this one - the pastry was incredibly flaky and the filling delectably warm, silky and gooey. Quickly rose to the top as one of my favourites.

Castro – Atelier de Pastéis de Nata is fantastic! The pastéis de nata are freshly baked, perfectly crisp on the outside and creamy on the inside. Every bite is full of flavor and truly authentic. The shop is charming and welcoming, making it a perfect spot for a sweet treat in the city. Highly recommend!

The rumor is true. For me, this is the best nata I’ve tasted. The crackling mille feuille filled with flavorful butter, and the soft, light creamy filling, so unforgettable. I’d definitely come back.

This was our go-to place for Pasteis de Nata and we loved it so much! The interior was beautiful, stuff super friendly, and there was decent sitting space 😌✨💙 Loved the coffee too! The only thing is that if you take it for take-away how we did couple of times, they don’t give you cinnamon/powdered sugar to go but you can let yourself out inside.

Normally I am not a fan of Pasteis de Nata, but these are very tasty! Very cryspy and creamy and extra nice if you add cinnamon (provided as an optional extra at the tables).

Castro is a small, lively spot with fantastic pastel de nata ❤️ perfectly creamy and flavorful. The place is usually busy, with a bit of a queue, but the service is friendly and fast. The girls at the counter were very kind and the espresso was excellent. I took mine to go in a carton and warmed it up later - still delicious! A great little place worth the wait!

Castro was the first place we tried Pastel de Nata, and it did not disappoint. They came out fresh from the oven, and the cream was perfectly warm and oozing. Out of all the ones we tried in Portugal, this was probably our second favorite, right behind Pastéis de Belém. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in Lisbon.
