KitTea, San Francisco’s Only Cat Cafe, Is Just Trying to Hang On | Eater SF

"In Oakland, Cat Town Cafe has the distinction of being the first cat cafe in the U.S.; like KitTea, its doors were closed by the Bay Area shelter-in-place, its 30 adoptable cats were relocated to foster homes, and all adoptions have been arranged remotely." - Eve Batey

Felines Flee Oakland Cat Cafe During Break-In | Eater SF

"An Oakland cat cafe where patrons sip drinks and play with adoptable cats, Cat Town Cafe opened in 2014 as the country's first cat cafe. It housed 21 cats and has recovered all but one after a late-night break-in in which a vandal smashed through two windows—security video shows him entering the cafe and the ensuing frenzy. The cafe was closed while staff, who are safe, search for the missing cat (they strongly suspect the cat is hiding on the premises), and the business says it will fortify the adoption center to reduce the likelihood of escapes and is accepting donations." - Caleb Pershan

I did a walk-in just to have a quick peek today and they fortunately had one spot open! The cats were so friendly and receptive to pets and scratches. The separation of studios further inside the cafe was really cool for individualized socializing. It's also super clean and stocked with toys and seating areas. The decor and cat houses were so cute too!

This is the best cat cafe I have been to! You can tell that the cats are happy and comfortable. There is a big room for the playful cats, and a bunch of smaller private rooms for the more introverted cats. I have gone many times and always have a great visit :)

My husband and I went here for the first time and really quite enjoyed our visit. It’s very affordable and a great date idea. It’s best to make a reservation and arrive a few minutes early. The entrance to cat town is their coffee shop. Cat town has several, wonderful cats ranging from kittens to adults. The main room with all the cats was a bit overwhelming with all the people, so I was thankful that they had separate rooms where you could play quietly with cats. They provided plenty of toys, hand sanitizer, etc the staff was super helpful. The cats were absolutely lovely. They were friendly, a few of them walked into our lap or on my husband’s shoulders. It was a heavenly experience.

make sure to make an appointment (phone/website-- $12/person/visit) beforehand rather than dropping in, slots can fill up quickly for viewings. super friendly staff; they're super knowledgable, explain the rules clearly, and give you toys so you can play with the cats! there was one large "free roam" room with cats and a second section with several smaller "mini apartment" rooms that hold smaller amounts of cats (or solo cats) that are still getting acclimated. you can also bring in your drink into the rooms if you order anything at the cafe 🙂‍↕️

My wife brought me here for my birthday because I love cats! I was excited to know that they also have a cafe. The entrance is the cafe, once checked in you will be given instructions of Do's & Don'ts and then you are able to go in and play or watch the cats. We did order coffee and a pastries before going into the car room. I did feel like we were a bit of a bother the cafe staff, but they probably get excited people in there on the daily. Once in the car room you get to see all the cute cats. Some are sleeping and some are ready to play. They have another room where you can walk in and check on more cars and be in a private room with them. All In all, it's a great place to come and support. Apparently all the staff are volunteers and that is amazing. We hope to be back soon. Wish I could give this 4.5 Stars!

The staff were friendly and very informative about all the cats. Very clean and most importantly the cats were well cared for.

I visited Cat Town for the second time on a Sunday (Dec 10th), as I'm not local. I made it a point to visit the first cat cafe in the country again, though, because I think they do a wonderful job. The cafe and merchandise room was closed when I visited due to short staffing, unfortunately. But the main attraction is the cats, and they have a main room and another section with smaller rooms where you can interact with cats who are still being socialized/not quite ready to join the main room. All of the cats are adoptable, which is amazing. Cat Town is a non-profit cat rescue and they take in cats that would have a tough time finding homes otherwise. All of the cats were very relaxed and I could tell that they are well taken care of. All of the volunteers were also very helpful and knew all of the cats' personalities. I highly recommend visiting and supporting Cat Town!

Unique idea of a place to interact with cats as they get geared up for adoption in a commercial setting. It's clean and well maintained. You can get coffee and snacks and then come interact gently with the cats in two different areas. Groups are allowed in at intervals so you have to plan ahead. The cats are in charge here, so if they're sleeping then you leave them alone but there's usually a couple of them up for interacting.
