Where to Drink Coffee in Northampton, Massachusetts | Eater Boston

"A small, uncluttered cafe with a bright leaf-print wall and a calm, quiet vibe that serves dark and light roasts in the morning and brings on a medium roast in the afternoon; owned by the same family behind Shelburne Falls Coffee Roasters and stocked with baked goods from a sibling bakery (Tart Baking Co.), it offers a concise food menu featuring breakfast sandwiches and notable specialty items such as an espresso tonic." - Aaron Kagan

Google
Catalpa has been a game changer for my husband and I. We are particularly well versed with coffee and we travel frequently. Wherever we go, we look for a great latte, it's just our thing. Catalpa has thus far been pretty unbeatable, the texture, flavor profile and service is always wonderful. The staff is always so friendly and outgoing. I cannot speak to the food aspect because I am gluten free but my daughter really appreciates when they have blueberry muffins! I do wish they offered some gluten free options other than the yogurt parfait and oatmeal, but everything else makes up for that. Miguel particularly has an amazing craft and it's a wonder to me how he makes such a great Mocha. Even our kids love their hot chocolates and brewed iced teas. Try it out, you won't be disappointed!

Google
Tea and coffee from around the world, and tasty treats like scallion biscuits with ham, cheddar, and eggs, or chèvre cheese with blueberries on toast! The croissant reminded me of the ones Panera used to make. It was a bit hard, like it was a day old maybe, but it was tasty. The cookies were perfection, and the matcha was good. Parking out front but it is a busy road and snow banks make it hard to get to the sidewalk right now. They do have automatic doors though!! So cool!

Google
The vibe is lovely, the pastries and beans are good, but their ratios for espresso drinks are really off. I’m not sure if they’re just trying to cram too many shots into their drinks, or if they’re burning their espresso, or both, but their lattes and cappuccinos end up tasting bitter and aggressively strong. I absolutely love strong coffee, and if this was being done well I would love it, but something is off and the drinks aren’t well-balanced. I hope they make adjustments, because it would be a really lovely, top-tier place if they did!

Google
Great coffee. And extra bonus points for being one of the very few places in the neighborhood of the train station that actually lets someone use the restroom even if they are not a customer. A. rare and much appreciated courtesy these days.

Google
Capitala Coffee is way to expensive for what they offer. I got a Ham Egg and Cheese sandwich and a Hibiscus Tea. The Hibiscus Tea was fine, you can get just as good a Hibiscus Tea at Starbucks. The Sandwich was awful, they only make them in the morning so if you go for a lunch in to get food don’t go to this place. They only make their sandwiches in the morning where at Starbucks you can get them fresh any time. The bread was atrocious, it was hard and the ham was like chewing on rubber, and I spent 12$ on the whole order. Overall the attitudes of the employers are very monotone and if thats your speed thats fine, but theirs no personality. Overall Capitala coffee is way to expensive for subpar coffee and bad food, and you can get breakfast or lunch anywhere for just as much and the food is actually fresh. I am shocked I even have to say that as a customer I want fresh food when I pay for it.

Google
Staff was super friendly and food and drink were amazing!

Google
Love the coffee! Took a bag home. Enjoyed the most amazing chocolate chip butterscotch oatmeal cookie.

Google
Quality in coffee and service has definitely declined since my last visit. Very over priced for sub par espresso, cold sandwiches, and unwelcoming staff this morning.

Yelp
Found this company through a Colorado connection! Coffee makes a great stocking stuffer! Easy to order online and free ship offer! laura

Yelp
The wifi hasn't worked 2 out of the 3 times we have gone to study which makes it challenging. The seasonal drinks are often good but very very sweet and a tad pricey. Seating can also be tough if its very busy.

Yelp
I love a small cozy coffee shop. I especially love a coffee shop that has a variety of custom- roasted blends. One of my favorite things about Catalpa is that they had a menu of seasonal drinks that were delicious-sounding and made with unique flavors. My coffee came with a Luxor-type cherry on top and was very delicious. It is a newer shop, so it was interesting watching people filtering in and trying to figure out what to do. The entrances are a little funky. TIP: When you walk in you think you should walk right up to the counter, the side with the pastries, but you actually order on the long side of the counter. They have areas where you can sit next to the counter on stools, tables near the front so you can people watch and get lots of sunshine, and also quieter spaces at other tables inside. I went when it was colder weather so I bet that they do have outdoor seating when it is nicer out. I was a little disappointed that there was a lot of the same type of pastry with maybe different fillings or toppings. This didn't really match the vibe that the coffee selections gave.

Yelp
I've been all over Europe and had croissants everywhere but today I had the most amazing one here. Not only was there a delicious layer of chocolate, it was then dipped in more chocolate on 1/2 to form a delicious extra layer! My cortado was also delicious!

Yelp
Cold brew is bomb, highly recommend. I also got a Cortado that was also bomb. Great stuff

Yelp
Really cute coffee shop with lots of seating. I ordered of the "adventurous" menu and was very happy with my latte! Lots of dairy alternatives, and the staff was accommodating and friendly.

Mike D.

Yelp
The coffee is decent and the staff seem pleasant. Steer clear of the pastries. They're often stale. It is infuriatingly disrespectful to be served a pricey day-old croissant when you're expecting it to be fresh. They no longer offer pain au chocolat and have replaced it with a regular croissant tricked out with some kind of Nuttela chocolate drizzle B.S. Standards have definitely fallen. This once cute cafe has forgotten the importance of customers and sadly finds itself circling the drain.

Yelp
Great coffee, awesome sticky bun & open early! I used to come here when it was Northampton Coffee & it did not disappoint!

Yelp
5 stars are solely for Miguel the barista. One of the best lattes you will get in Western Massachusetts period. Takes a lot of care. Coffee never tastes burnt. Worth going out of your way for.

Yelp
Got chai and mocha latte with a chocolate chip cookie. The chai latte was 90% milk, but the mocha was alright. The barista picked it up the cookie with her bare hands. We came here after reading the good reviews but were disappointed.

Yelp
Unreal coffee, nice staff, beautiful space. I wasn't expecting much from a coffee house on the east coast but damn. This was a great stop to make.

Lindsey P.

Yelp
The coffee is expensive, I paid $8 for a small and the person who waited on me was extremely rude. I will not be back!

Yelp
For years, Northampton Coffee made the the best, most reliable espresso drinks in Western Massachusetts, along with its offspring Amherst Coffee and Greenfield Coffee. I had hundreds of lattes there and it was always perfect. Then they were bought by Shelburne Falls coffee and then I think bought again. I walked into its replacement, Catalpa, today and it was terrible. The milk was burnt, the espresso was overextracted--it was worse than my terrible tiny-town coffee shop in Central New York. Very, very sad. Don't go.

Yelp
Absolutely beautiful space! Coffee was fine, but Tart down the street makes the same things only much better. One star because the workers were so offensive it made me laugh out loud. Not sure where they think they are, but here in the Valley we are NICE to each other!

Yelp
This was my first visit to Catalpa. The staff was really friendly. There are plenty of baked goods, and many drink choices. They had some delicious looking sandwiches, and many bottles of different types of sodas and drinks. But we wanted coffee, and they had one last chocolate croissant in the case... And it was MINE. The coffee is excellent. It has a bit of a chocolate flavor, and is very rich. I had the house cold brew and my partner had a decaf cappuccino with oat milk. Both drinks were fantastic. The chocolate croissant was fantastic as well. Rich and buttery with two parallel bars of dark chocolate. I believe that they get some of their pastries from Tart. Five very well deserved stars and we will come back here again.

Yelp
This place has always been decent, but I stopped coming for a little while because of a decline in the service. Specifically, one very rude and arrogant young fellow who wore a red baseball cap. Tried it again a few weeks ago, and the huge improvement in service and cleanliness is obvious each time.

Yelp
Great coffee, and cute new location in downtown Northampton! Came here this weekend after seeing this new spot pop up that is a coffee roaster in Greenfield, MA. I ordered a cortado for myself and iced matcha latte for my partner. Both drinks were great, the cortado was made perfectly which I find many places over milk or pull their espresso too much and make it very tart. The matcha latte was unsweetened which was great (I'd rather sweeten it to my own taste). Loved the ambiance, and free cup of coffee with purchase of a bag of beans!

Yelp
Even after the rebranding and roasting their own beans now, this spot continues to be the best coffee in town. There are better spots for food, but out of plethora of cafes downtown, the coffee and espresso quality at Catalpa continues to be the best. Personal favorites: espresso, espresso tonic, americano, drip coffee, iced matcha. Only note for people that like drinks like iced lattes is to get a quad espresso in the large size (standard is one double) or else it's probably very milky. In comparison, their standard americanos come with a quad of espresso. Not sure why it's like this, but something to look out for if you like stronger drinks.

Yelp
Great coffee and great baked goods. We stop here every time we're driving from Connecticut to Vermont.
google avatar

Jay O.

Yelp
Good baked goods. Over roasted/bitter coffee. Similar decor to what previous management maintained, just with much worse coffee.

Robert S.

Yelp
Great pastries, interesting coffees, bright spacious place, friendly people. Perfect.

Yelp
Crappy name, crappy coffee, untrained baristas. RIP Northampton Coffee. Very sad to see this place become another mediocre experience

Yelp
Always super friendly staff, surprisingly good pastries, solid coffee and unique specialty drinks. Lots of seating, outlets, and WiFi. All that plus the strong AC, it's been our main summer respite to beat the heat.

Sarah L.

Yelp
We stopped here on our way through Northampton and were impressed by the delicious espresso drinks. The cappuccinos were perfect with a creamy, steamed milk not just the foam topping that many places can't seem to stop doing. Whoever roasts the coffees is a pro. Highly recommend this place and their baked goods were also very good. I hear they own a bakery called Tart that we will visit on our next trip!
