"Sonny’s Pizza expanded outside of its D.C. home base this spring with an adorably named Alexandria bar slinging square slices, slushies, wines, and beer on the banks of the Potomac. The fun riverside hangout, located at Washington Sailing Marina, debuted over Memorial Day weekend just in time for summer. The all-alfresco spot invites outdoorsy types to pull up by kayak or bike and plop down for a pizza-and-beer picnic for as little as $10.50." - Tierney Plumb

"Catboat Pizza Bar, a new riverside hangout at Washington Sailing Marina, offers square slices, slushies, wines, and beer. It is located 15 minutes from D.C., and offers outdoor seating with lawn games and views of planes. The minimal menu includes cheese, pepperoni, and mushroom slices, with plans to expand. A portion of sales goes to the National Park Service." - Tierney Plumb

When the weather is nice this is the perfect to sit and enjoy the river views and outdoors. A great alternative to plane watching at Gravelly Point. An easy simple menu with drinks and pizza. Seating is first come first served. The tables are sporadically cleaned up by staff so was not expecting a clean table. Staff brings food to your table by number and orders come out pretty quickly. There is a lawn for blanket seating and lawn chairs which are first come first served. I had the boozy frose drink which was refreshing and light and two slices of pepperoni pizza (Sonny’s Pizza) which was very good and hearty. Will definitely add to my list of great hangouts for the spring/summer. This place is popular and while there is parking it is limited and fills up fast. $

Took my wife and son here after seeing a Instagram post about this place. Menu is small but the pizza is good. Pizza is deep dish style and each slice is big. A whole pizza pie can easily feed 4 people. Great location with plenty of free parking, water views, and airplanes from Reagan airport. My son really enjoyed watching the planes land while we ate. There isn't much seating so bring a blanket or lawn chairs.

"This is my new favorite place," my wife said walking into Catboat Pizza Bar seeing people picnicking along the Potomac River. With good pizza, refreshing froses, and great views, what's not to love. Open seasonally (around April to October), Catboat Pizza Bar is a chill deck bar on Alexandria's Daingerfield Island. There's a large parking lot next door. Walk onto the deck, order at the counter, and find a table or picnic on the grass, waiting for your food to arrive. We ordered two rounds of froses (they have a non-alcoholic mango one too), pepperoni pizza and mushroom pizza (they are square), and ice cream sandwiches. Everything was chill, easy, and good! My seven-year-old daughter loved walking along the water watching sail boats come in, planes land at nearby National Reagan Airport, and the monuments in D.C. It was a great evening!

I went with my husband and brother in law and a total of 4 kids under 5. We arrived at 5:45pm in a Sunday evening. Our drinks were delicious, the pizza arrived sooner than we expected and was enjoyed by all. The space and atmosphere is unmatched. Stellar space in the grass for families to casually eat and drink and space for kids to run and play without bothering others too much. This place was on my summer bucket list and we’ll be trying to make it back before the end of the season.

Google
Took a very long time to get the pizza. My order of pizza was cold. My friends was warm. Great views and the frose slushy was ok. But that pizza! NOT good. Burnt at the bottom and almost impossible to cut. Need to work on their wait times and brining out cold pizza.

I just visited CatBoat Pizza Bar. I spent $40 on 2 DELICIOUS pieces of pepperoni pizza a mango slushy and a less than satisfactory Italian sandwich. 10/10 would recommend visiting (avoid the sandwich) but the views and vibes were amazing.

Google
Absolutely loved it here! Ordered the pepperoni pizza, Caesar salad, and bottle of wine. Pizza was good, Caesar was solid, and wine was great! The space is super fun and open, with great views of the planes taking off. They don’t have a large menu, but they’re good at what they do have. Definitely an awesome date spot, affordable and fun! I will be coming back again. This place is a hidden gem and will definitely blow up when it’s discovered by more people!

Google
This place is 15 out of 10! They need hours open all day everyday! I assume it’s a business experiment being here but I hope they continue to operate, you can bike here in the AM (not open) and coffee would be great! But any day watching the planes at DCA is so fun!

Yelp
Cute, casual spot on the water. Fun to get a frozen drink (alcoholic or nonalcoholic) and sit on the deck with a slice of pizza. No frills but none are needed because you can watch the boats, plans and let your dog run in the grass. Parking wasn't an issue for us on a Saturday afternoon.

Yelp
GLUTEN FREE PIZZA LOVERS - I'M TALKIN TO YOU ^It's thick, cheesy - sooooo delicious! If you miss that deeper dish, thicker crust feel (instead of the usual thin, crumbly, hard as a rock crust I usually have), this is the placeeeee. The service is great - however I must say that getting your food can take a while (the first time we came it was like 10 minutes, the second time was closer to 30). They are clearly working as fast as they can, so while you wait, enjoy the beautiful ambiance and scenery! Walk by the water, in the grass, etc. Parking is also free - huge plus since it's a cute spot right next to water. Can't wait to return!

Yelp
This place is great--very scenic and a perfect place to hang out on a summer evening or as a biking pit stop. Everything is very reasonably priced and the frosé (frozen wine) drink was way better than I expected! Would love to see some live music events here!

Yelp
WHAT A CUTE SPOT!!!!! We were out biking and stopped in for post ride snacks and drinks. You order up at the bar and they give you a number and then they bring the food out to wherever you've selected to sit. Huge outdoor space to choose from. Pretty good selection of drinks and foods. We got the froze and some lagers, both were great and refreshing and we also got the pepperoni pizza. It was a pretty big slice, it was kind of greasy but was still really good!!! Definitely will be stopping in on our next bike ride.

Yelp
Go for the planespotting and enjoying the waterfront views, and you will not be disappointed. Foodwise, Sonny's pizza wouldn't be my go-to, given the chewy crust, but it is all about the location here. You pay/order up front, and get a number for the table for the food. I appreciated that they had giant fans, and a lot of seating options (shade, sun, high chairs by the water, loungers on grass..). Easy parking. Good drink options, slushies including a frose, draft and canned beer. Very similar to Columbia Island Marina, but with a more limited food menu (they only had pizza left late in the day.)

Yelp
I think the social media hype let me down. I'd say if you cannot find parking in the initial circle near the restaurant, don't bother parking in overflow and walking over- it's not worth a long walk. I think the best part of this place is the gorgeous views. Everything else is very subpar. You wait in a longish line to order food and drinks- I think they could also separate the lines for just drinks or both to speed things up. I wish they warned how long you'd wait for a slice (around 20-25 minutes). The slices were meh, super saucy and incredibly hard to cut with their plastic knifes. Good cheese but the sauce literally gets everywhere which sucks. The frose was good but on the sweeter side and the poured lager was ok. Tables are a bit uncomfy and rickety.

Yelp
This place is great to grab a bite and a cold drink on a nice day. The slushies were just what we needed on this very hot afternoon. We had a mango with no alcohol and a spiked rosè slushie. The pepperoni pizza looked amazing so we grabbed two slices. The pepperonis were cooked perfectly, the pizza was okay just the dough was sort of mushy. Maybe not the best choice for a hot day. Will have to try again on a cooler evening. Either way would definitely return. Great spot to have in the area. Service was very friendly and the view was wonderful.

Nina D.

Yelp
The pepperoni pizza is insanely delicious, highly highly recommend. The views are insane and so nice. Makes you feel like you are at the beach but you're still in the DC/NOVA area! It was fun watching planes take off while drinking a frozen rose (delicious too) and having a slice. I will say the line to order gets very very long and it takes some time to get your pizza but if you are not in a rush, this place is perfect for you!

Yelp
Awesome little pizza bar with great views of the Potomac and tasty slushies. We have been a few times this summer and have had a really great time every time. It's definitely a chill vibe that's easily accessible by car, trail or by boat/kayak. I will say that the line can be a bit long sometimes, and the first time we came here, they had totally sold out of pizza at 6 pm, but I think they've worked through some of their supply chain issues. Can't wait to return when the weather is nice!

Jenn Z.

Yelp
Stopped in on a sunny saturday afternoon with my partner and dog. We appreciated the simple but quality menu, ample seating options with fans, beautiful views, and dog bowls filled with water. The woman who took our order even offered my dog a generously sized dog treat! The pizza's appearance resembled that of school lunch pizza but the flavor and texture was 5x better. I appreciated the cheesiness and my partner loved the sauce. The mango slushy might have been made from real mango which I love, though it was a tad sweet for my taste buds. Would definitely come back in the summer to try the other pizza options and indulge in the sliced (and super fresh-looking) watermelon!

Rohit R.

Yelp
I stopped here in the middle of a bike ride and enjoyed their pepperoni pizza and a refreshing lager. The line to order food was pretty long but after you place your order, the food comes out pretty fast. Despite not typically liking thicker crust pizza, theirs was delicious and perfectly satisfying. The views of the Potomac and the planes flying by added to the great atmosphere. Definitely looking forward to stopping by again on my next ride!

Antonia N.

Yelp
It this the best pizza I've ever had? No. Is it the worst? No! I'd describe it as fast food pizza. A bit too much sauce and cheese but tasty and hits the spot. One slice is plenty. The froze slushies are super tasty and the view is pretty! Worth a trip.

Yelp
So glad there is a quality establishment at the marina again. Catboat offers cold beverages both alcoholic and non alcoholic. They serve Sonny's pizza by the slice plus other things including ice cream. You place an order and they bring it to you when it's ready whether you are on the patio or picnic tables. Friendly service. Don't let the long line discourage you it moves fast. Because there are limited options. Just enjoy the view while sipping your beer. It's only open Fri-Sun and only for the summer.

Shayla M.

Yelp
A meal with a view is always a nice bonus. Catboat pizza bar sits right on the water. So close that you can also get a view of the airplanes taking off from DCA. Located in the marina, there are plenty of parking spaces and signs to point you in the right direction. I arrived right when they opened and there was a line within a few minutes of opening. There are patio tables with umbrellas as well as tables under a large tent. They had several outdoor fans blowing since it was so hot out. The menu is small which makes for faster service. I opted for two slices of pepperoni and a non alcoholic slushie. They have several alcohol options available as well. The pizza had a thick crust. I had a hard time using the knife and fork to cut it but it was still delicious. The slushie definitely took my mind off of thinking about the heat. They have limited hours right now but this would be a cool place to go grab a bite to eat, watch the sunset and enjoy seeing the airplanes take off from the nearby airport. I will definitely be back.

Yelp
The Catboat Pizza Bar recently opened in the Washington Sailing Marina and is currently in their soft opening stage - their menu offers various slice pizzas (grandma-style, pan pizzas), salads, sandwiches, wines, beer, and margarita slushies. We tried their cheese and mushroom slices and they were pretty good; staff were all friendly! I love the fact that a portion of all their sales go towards the NPS! They shared that they will have live music soon, so just check back often for their upcoming summer lineup! There's also plenty of space for lawn games and such on their deck, and you can check out the plane views flying in/out from DCA. Grand opening is scheduled for June 9th, so hoping people will turn out! +pizza slices +friendly staff +located in the marina +grand opening on 6/9

Yelp
Catboat Pizza Bar boasts incredible views into DC, making it a great spot for a scenic outing. The ambiance is its strong point - but the pizza is just average, and the drink selection is quite limited. Seating can be a bit of a hassle--it's first come, first serve, and self-seated, so you'll want to arrive early to snag a good spot. Despite that, the stunning view makes it a worthwhile visit if you're looking to enjoy the scenery and a casual atmosphere.

Jamie N.

Yelp
Sonny's Pizza moved into this fun and under appreciated location at the Washington Sailing Marina. This is a unique spot and I've always wanted something to thrive here - hope this is the winner! They just opened a few weeks ago so menu is small but seems to have expanded from what they initially had. Generously sized cheese, pepperoni, and mushroom Neapolitan-style pizza slices. Solid but didn't blow my mind. You order everything at the bar and get a number, then food is delivered to the table. At 6pm on a Friday with nice weather, the wait for food was short. Decent drink selection, very relaxed and fun atmosphere with a few cornhole boards and people playing games they brought. Kid and dog friendly. Really can't beat the views - planes taking off and landing and sailboats there near the marina. Worth checking out!

Yelp
Outstanding little marina based pizza and beer / wine bar right off the Mount Vernon Trail. Slices are saucy & full of cheese with gluten free options. Salads available for those seeking lighter fare and limited snacks & sweets. Mix of local / domestic beer & wine plus refreshing mango or frosé slushies. Amazing cross Potomac views of DC and adjacent to the DCA approach and takeoff patterns. Much less trafficked than Gravelly Point, Old Town, The Wharf, and National Harbor while retaining a local feel without the tourist overload. Hidden gem and great place to picnic. Mix of tables, high tops, picnic tables, and Adirondack chairs. Kids, dogs, bikes, all welcomed. Service is quick and efficient and everyone was genuinely friendly and grateful for the business. Lovely space to spend an afternoon. Definitely adding it to the waterfront rotation.

Yelp
A perfect spot! Great location with a fun view. Staff were attentive and handled a pretty packed Saturday. Pizza is delicious and the drinks matched. Great place to hang on a hot day!

Rachel A.

Yelp
The cutest summer find! Catboat is the perfect place on the weekends to visit and have a small escape from the city without the long commute. Catboat is right off the bike path from GW Parkway which makes it the perfect end or break. All seating is outdoors with some coverage but it is right along the water facing Reagan so you can watch the planes take off while enjoying the food. The food was amazing! We had pepperoni slices with frosé while watching families paddle board and the planes take off. While I wish we had ranch to dip our slices in, everything else was phenomenal. Would love to see more frozen drink variety at some point but this place is doing great for a new small spot. Everyone working was incredible and super sweet so will definitely be coming back to support and enjoy again!

Don C.

Yelp
Food is tasty, and as a bike ride relaxation destination it is perfect. Would I like a little more seating and shade? Yes. But a great little spot to relax.

Reid D.

Yelp
On a warm Friday night, this relaxed waterside hangout next to the Washington Sailing Marina was just about perfect - a nice breeze off the river, planes to watch landing at DCA, and a lively crowd enjoying the pizza (think New York-style but with a substantial crust), prepared at the mother ship, Sonny's on Georgia Avenue in Park View. Once you get your drinks, the fun vibe takes over, and you can happily sit on the deck (or the lawn, if you prefer) indefinitely. Despite a "kitchen" limited to a pizza oven, the staff turns out slice after slice for a long line of eager eaters (the wait at 6 pm maxed out at 15 minutes). The menu has just three choices for the hearty square slices - cheese, pepperoni, and mushroom (my fav) - along with a hefty Caesar salad, an Italian sandwich, and odds 'n' ends like seasoned popcorn and a caramel ice cream bar that's to die for. The eclectic selection of drinks includes draft and canned beers, natural wines, coffees and kombucha, along with sodas. You have to keep your eyes open for the Daingerfield Island location, a left turn just south of the airport from the GW Parkway (the Park Service sign still points to the long-gone predecessor Indigo Landing) - but just follow the marina's driveway to the end. For a casual, affordable evening outdoors on the water, it's all there.

Yelp
Good Unique Fun location Beautiful view Very friendly Very good drinks I liked it...a lot!!!

Calli D.

Yelp
Ambiance was fantastic. Arrived just before subset and the water with the boats sailing was beautiful. Pizza was also very good! Although, it was a fairly long wait for pete pizza on a busy friday evening. Took about 30 minutes in the line and an hour to wait for our pizza to be brought out after ordering. Next time, will try to come during off hours and with a snack to munch on beforehand. But overall good experience and you can see the staff is working very hard!

Kam C.

Yelp
Came to this spot after seeing the Instagram promo! We brought a pup and there was plenty of seating! The staff were super friendly and the selection of beverages was extensive. Will definitely be returning to watch the sunset on the marina.

Jim H.

Yelp
Long lines beware but worth the wait. Had the pizza and a sandwich. Once you got through the line, food came fairly quickly. It was a hot day and they have limited shaded tables. They need more help and more shaded table. Then the experience would be a five star.

Sarah B.

Yelp
Great experience! Tons of seating, shaded and sunny area. A very long line but it was a beautiful sunny day so to be expected. Pizza and frozen drink were also delish. Service was great, super helpful and accommodating!

K G.

Yelp
Long line and limited seating, but the location was nice and the food came quickly! Pizza was just ok, hard to eat picnic style, but wine slushie was perfect for a hot day

Avery G.

Yelp
Truly one of the best spots I've been to in the area! The overall amazing atmosphere and experience will not be leaving me anytime soon! The service was so lovely; everyone was extremely kind! Any long line simply reflects the demand- a lovely place with lovely food and amazing drinks! Simply worth any wait!
