The Best Places For A Casual Cocktail

"Catcher In The Rye resides in that section of Toluca Lake dedicated entirely to the drinking needs of disgruntled studio workers. But unlike the hostile environments you find in other bars around here, this literary-themed spot is where you and your favorite coworkers can have some cocktails in peace after work. With drink names like the Tequila Mockingbird and Pearadise Lost, there’s no subtlety in the theme here, but everything tastes good and you can actually hear your friends talk, so you don’t care." - brant cox, brett keating

11 Bars That Are Quiet Enough For A Conversation

"Located in Toluca Lake, Catcher In The Rye is the most prime after-work drink spot in the Valley. If you couldn’t guess, this bar takes its literature theme seriously, with a library aesthetic and cocktails named things like Tequila Mockingbird. The bar bites are solid enough, and there are plenty of board games for you and your only friend at work to play while also scouring LinkedIn for new job openings." - brant cox

The Best Bars To Pretend Like You’re Networking

"Catcher In The Rye is one of those rare places you could take your agent for a quick dinner, meet your roommate for Happy Hour drinks, or have a weird meeting with your mom’s best friend’s son who’s in LA this summer and wants to pick your brain. This bar’s sole purpose in life is to provide a space for people to have uncomfortable industry meetings. With good drinks, solid bar food, and board games for when things get really dire, it delivers." - brant cox, brett keating

Really chill spot. They have a bunch of board games and books for patrons. The seating and atmosphere is really comfortable and inviting. It was pretty quiet when we went on a Wednesday night, but it was still a great place to hang out with friends. I had it w/o alcohol, but the How the West Was Won was really good.

Catcher in the Rye has been on my to-do list for a while, and I was thrilled to finally cross it off while meeting some Yelp friends. I adore the vibe of this place, especially the cozy reading corner, which attracts book lovers. Our bartender, Reyna, was attentive, kind, and offered excellent drink recommendations. They are open from 5 pm to midnight on weekdays and 2 am on weekends, with street parking or a small back lot available. They also have happy hour every single day which is a plus! I tried the sliders that had a quail egg on top and they were delicious.

This place was dead from 8:30 to 10pm on a Saturday night. I sat at the bar since there was no wait staff for the all but one empty tables. The bartender was sweet and I enjoyed our conversation. I went by myself to get out of the house, and to just be in a lively atmosphere, which this was not. I ordered the steak tacos for $12, and the the three pathetic tacos had just steak grounds from the bottom of the skillet that maybe filled 1/4 of each of the tortillas. There was a spattering of yellow onions, and specks of cilantro on top. The steak had no seasoning, but luckily it was served with salsa which I doused the tacos in for flavor and to help fill the tortillas, which was still not much. Also, the presentation was lackluster. I was super let down that I paid $12 for what was worth maybe $3 since the amount of meat between the 3 tacos was almost enough to fill one actual taco sold from a street vendor for $2.50. I also order the parmesan garlic fries for another $12. They didn't offer it in a side order size, but I figured I'd bring the leftovers home. Well, there were no leftovers because the serving size was that of a side of fries. They were hot and tasty, though. For my drink, I order their signature take on an Old Fashion which was very good, but fairly expensive. I also order a second drink called the Stay Gold Pony Boy, and it was a strange mix of flavors that didn't work, and it was too sweet. I didn't even finish it. Overall, I would not recommend this place for more than a drink or two of their signature Old Fashion. I won't be going back.

Google
Love this place - it’s always chill, the parm garlic fires are amazing, there’s tons of games and books and the drinks are all fun literary references. The ONE complaint I have, is that for a place that’s mostly quiet, it consistently takes forever to get a drink.

This place is a gem. It has a cozy, cool vibe. People are nice and it's comfortable and clean. We didn't eat, but the cocktails were great and the food smelled delicious. So next time...

I went for a salsa night at this bar two nights ago with a couple friends. My friend was a bartender there and it’s the reason why I ended up going. From the jump the bartenders didn’t seem to attend our group I guess because we were affiliated with the new bartender that was working there. The night was fine at first until I got attacked by the owner of the place next door, I believe he goes by the name GEO. To add some context I was socializing, having fun and dancing salsa. I was only two drinks in, and everything seemed fine. Everything happened when I accidentally took a sip of someone’s drink that was right next to mine, it was a girl next to me and I was unaware it was hers until she told me. I apologized and offered to buy her a new one and my bartender friend ( will not say a name for legal reasons) made her a new one. It was settled, the girl got her new drink I apologized and everything was all good. Some reason, the other bartenders that are very cliquesh and power tripping accused me of stealing drinks and sent this guy “ geo” to escort me out. He was really drunk and aggressive so he came out of no where and grabbed me from behind without any warning. No one told me I had to leave, no one told me anything. I wasn’t causing a problem, I was genuinely having a good night with friends because I’m really not the type of person to cause problems and I have many people that can vouch for that. So to be attacked like that unexpectedly left me confused and angered. So after he grabbed me we started to fight in which we started knocking things down and breaking things and we ended up outside on the floor. That’s when I saw red and defended myself. Where was security ? I don’t know. I ended up fighting this small dude named GEO who’s the owner next door for no apparent reason and let’s just say it didn’t end to well for him as I’m a United States military veteran. If they had a problem with me why didn’t anyone tell me they had a problem? Why didn’t security tell me I had to leave ? I was attacked and left with eye bruises and a sprained hand for no apparent reason. after the fight I was so furious because I had no idea why I was attacked and I asked security and the other people in charge of the night and they all said “ idk”. When the police came they told the police that I was stealing drinks which is laughable because how was I stealing drinks if my friend WAS the bartender ? I have witnesses and police report ready. I will be suing and seeking a criminal charge against this place and the guy who attacked me. I don’t even write reviews for places so for me to do this it had to be a lot. It will all come to the light soon and let me just add this, why is the owner drunk while he’s working ? GEO was intoxicated while working the night. The event was a collaboration between his business and catcher in the rye. Please avoid this place at all costs. You guys will be hearing from my attorney soon.

Google
A decorated literature themed bar with well-made drinks and decent food. Street parking on a Saturday night was easy. It's a good spot for a private party, but for a fun night out this place seemed quiet and empty otherwise. Not a cheap place to buy drinks, especially when charged $7 for Diet Coke, and another $7 for a refill. I assume it was a mistake, but it bemuses me to pay a cocktail price for soda.

Yelp
Great drinks & service in a funky fun atmosphere. Great local bar! Staff were so warm and friendly. They also do Karaoke!

Yelp
To quote literature. Here's the Good, the Bad & the Ugly. Real nice people behind the bar, working Karaoke & generally helping out, real nice. Very welcoming & fun place, easy location. Drinks are well made, a bit skimpy on the size of the drink for the money, kinda Beverly Hills prices & small size for the $$, but good & creative. It was Karaoke nite & lots of peeps singing & all having a good time. You order drinks & food & pay in advance. Now the ugly. The items they make are good, but. chips are from a bag at Smart & Final, not warmed at all. All in all food was good though here's the big BUT...... the service is just plain ghastly, under staffed for a night with a crowd of any sort. The amount of time it takes to get food from the 'kitchen' is inexcusable. Either do the kitchen thing right, or keep it simple & only offer the items you can handle. Again, nice people. fun place. ......... but..........

Yelp
After perusing the glowing reviews, I thought I'd take a chance on this place. I arrived at 6 PM on a Wednesday, and shockingly, I was the only customer in sight. The bartender--or perhaps the manager, though she was hardly managing--sat at the end of the bar, mesmerized by her laptop screen. Nothing quite shouts "come on in!" like an absent bartender, right? Now, let's discuss the drink prices. A casual $21.64 for a single Hendrick's and tonic? I must have wandered into an upscale Beverly Hills establishment by mistake, considering places a mere block away offer similar libations for half that price. One would think that a lack of patrons might inspire a little pricing sympathy, but apparently not here. I genuinely hoped this could be my new go-to spot, but as they say, "first impressions last a lifetime." My first impression? Let's just say it left me wondering if I'd stumbled into a "how not to run a bar" tutorial.

Yelp
Stopped by this bar to visit some family friends from childhood. Nice bar, has a chill vibe. They also offer food, I had the smash burger, delicious! Also the mozzarella sticks are also delicious. Big space with comfy loft chairs at the corners for more intimate space. Service was awesome, bartender kept my cup filled and kept a conversation going. Free parking in the front. Just down the street from Universal studios theme park. Definitely recommend while in town.

Yelp
Man this place is a dive bar dressed up as a nicer place than what it is. Given the cozy libary vibe with games like jenga, it has so much potential. My partner and I played the game while waiting for their food. They don't serve it until 6:30 which we had gotten there early. As cute as the drink names are, they really lack depth or any genuine craftsmanship. I do have a high standard but given the competition in the area, it really failed. When the food came out I was genuinely disappointed at how medicore it was. I believe everything was frozen and again gave dive bar vibes (and no in the fun way) with a higher price tag. The whole experience was just sad and not what I expected.

Yelp
I had so much fun. Went on a Tuesday and had some tacos and guacamole. So good! The bartenders were nice and people were super friendly.

Yelp
The Catcher in the Rye was a controversial novel by J.D. Salinger. While there is nothing controversial about this friendly neighborhood bar, a literary theme is the central focal point. In fact, the cocktails are named after famous novels. The place has a low-key vibe and a laidback aesthetic. There's a little lounge section with books that you can read while enjoying a sip and a nibble and board games that you can play with a group of friends. I met up with some darling Yelp friends here for Happy Hour, which is daily from 5 pm - 7 pm. As soon as I walked in the door, I received a warm welcome from bartender Rayna. She had a wonderful personality and took great care of us. This is the type of place where you order at the bar, and someone will bring your food/drink to you. Rayna went above and beyond. Stepping out to personally walk over to our table in the back and check on us. I started with A Life in Lavender - a vibrant cocktail featuring Gin, lavender bitters, rosemary syrup, lemon juice, St. Germain, & Crème Yvette. It was absolutely delicious! The conversations at the table were engaging, so I ended up ordering another drink. This time Pearadise Lost was calling my name. This tasty concoction combined Absolute Pear Vodka with fresh pear, lime juice, vanilla simple, & soda. It was light & refreshing and packed a punch! My friends ordered food - Sliders, Artichoke Dip, Quesadilla, Chicken Tacos, Baby Green Salad. They each enjoyed their selections, and we all agreed that we would be back. *Parking lot in back & street parking.

Yelp
One of my favorite books as a teen by J.D. Salinger which made it very nostalgic for me. A neighborhood bar for 8 years just East of Cahuenga Blvd on Riverside Drive. Met a group of yelp friends for drinks and ended up staying for a few hours. Very friendly atmosphere with lots of games to play, great tunes in the background and drinks with catchy names from well known books. I had read a few reviews saying the food wasn't fabulous but I beg to differ. My chicken tacos and baby green salad were really good! Yes, a tad pricey for the salad ($14) but I thought the drinks were priced fairly and Rayna our bartender definitely didn't skimp on the liquor. She was very friendly and made a fabulous cocktail! It seemed like there were many regulars here which added to the comfy feeling. Great for large or small groups. There were lots of tables and a few comfy sofas. *Parking in the back as well as street parking.

Yelp
This place was such a random find! My friends and I were looking for a spot to meet up after a long work day. I found Cather in the Rye. I arrived before my friends, and met Louie, the resident barkeep. We started talking, he gave me the rundown on specialties and things he believes they do well. So my friends arrive, we sit at the bar to enjoy Louie's company and the drinks start flowing. We had several spicy margaritas, a habanero concoction that Louie was experimenting with, and what I believe is one of the best Manhattan's I've had in awhile. Dubbed "a clockwork orange" on their menu, this rendition of a Manhattan was lovely, spirit forward but not overpowering and so easy to drink it was scary! Louie's skills as a bartender are without question. What came next was their food. They have serval options for burgers, each with it's own twist. From a pineapple teriyaki burger to a habanero option. They were huge and delicious, with the chef grilling right in front of the restaurant for all to see. It was well worth it. Needless to say, Catcher in the Rye is on my rotation of places to visit. If you want the best experience, stop by Wednesday through Saturday to see the man, Louie. He'll take care of you!

Yelp
Decent little place. Food is good, ambiance is okay. Service can be slow, and everything seems a little overpriced to me, but they're trying and...not failing.

Yelp
New fav spot and it's under new management! This place is so chill! Def a place to hang out with friends, play some board games, eat food and drink! They play great music and the bartenders are so sweet! Bartender who helped me was Tra and she was so sweet! Made great drinks! I would def recommend this spot to anyone who wants a cool hangout spot. I also love that it's LQBTQ+ friendly.

Yelp
This bar is absolutely amazing and you meet the most fantastic people here! I met this woman, Naomi, who was looking for a guy named Patrick who she had met here. Though she seemed a little disappointed he wasn't around, we hit it off, we talked about Poe, drank Ravens. I'll never forget it!

Yelp
I had not visited this place in a while, but I was pleased to find that the drinks had improved. The drinks were not watered down nor too expensive. For me, you definitely come here for the vibes. It has such a cute academia aesthetic with a book feature wall. They also have games to play so thats fun. The service is typically not the best, as they tend to delay taking your order.

Yelp
I love this bar and the bookworm theme it has. It's cozy, they have games, and it's a great spot to come with a group, or on a date. The servers have always been nice, and the prices are reasonable. My favorite cocktail has always been the "Huckleberry Finn," and I really like the "secret garden" and "life of lavender" as well.

I P.

Yelp
I loved the concept of a library/board game bar but I felt the execution fell a little short. The music, decore, drinks (names and taste) plus the cozy vibes were great. However, we went at 8pm on a Friday and the service was VERY slow for our first round of drinks even though there were few people. The bar tenders were just talking behind the bar for far too long. Also, I was hungry but the food menu was just burgers and fries so I passed on that. I wish there was more board games to pick from, the current section was beat up and falling apart. Lastly, for small talk I asked the bartender what the book "catcher in the rye" was about and they said they never read it... I feel if you work somewhere named after a book you should atleast know the summary and a few fun facts. Would not return

Ryan L.

Yelp
I'm not going to bury the lead here -- the service was the only problem. And it was a big one. I went with friends and we enjoyed the food and the cocktails. Cameron, one of the bartenders, threw off the vibe of a fun night. As explained later by an apologetic manager's call, the other bartender was running late and he was working solo. As we approached the bar he looked at us, but didn't greet us. As he began to help those around us, including those that came after us, we shrugged it off. Things were busy. He was short with us as he took the order. We ordered 3 Catcher in the Rye cocktails, burgers, fries, and cheese sticks. The food and drinks came quickly. We enjoyed it all. When I go to close my tab, we watch him search around the register for my card, he digs through the ice in the well with his hands, and then inexplicably begins picking up liquor bottles and looking underneath them. He then slides a piece of receipt paper across the counter and says, "Can you write down your number?" I ask, "Did you lose my card?" No answer. I say, "If you lost my credit card I will need to lock it. You might have given it to someone else. Did you lose my card?" He shrugs and mumbles, "Yeah. Sorry. Can you write down your number?" Here's the deal, I've waited tables for a long time. If I had lost someone's credit card, and trust me there have been some scares, I would have been MORTIFIED and apologized profusely. Maybe even offered to do something nice. (We'll get to that in a minute.) We leave and about an hour later we get a call from a manager. She apologizes and tells me that they found my card. She offers that if I decide to try them again she will comp a couple of drinks for me. A night later I go to the bar and pick up my card. They had charged me in full. A little mea culpa would've been nice. A comped cocktail. 10% off. Just something. When you screw up, you make amends. Not make amends if someone returns and spends more money. If there was any real token offered, I honestly wouldn't have submitted this review at all. There are a lot of other places in Los Angeles that have good cocktails and cheeseburgers. I will just go to another one of those.

Yelp
Catcher in the Rye is a low-key neighborhood bar, the perfect place for meeting up with friends. The bar is a fairly large space with classy wooden furniture and a library lounge-style design that is filled with character and charisma. The epitome of a neighborhood bar, Catcher in the Rye has this warm and cozy environment that makes it feel like a home away from home, a safe space for bringing people together. It's the type of bar that can only add to the pride of the neighborhood and community rather than deter from it. They also have specialty craft cocktails with quirky names that pay homage to famous best-selling novels. And while I didn't love our actual drinks, which were just decent in my opinion, the book themed concept is really fun. So I am definitely open to exploring the rest of their cocktail menu until I find something that better suits my tastes. As for the food, it was a mixed bag to be honest. The grilled cheese was average and left a lot to be desired. BUT the bread pudding more than made up for it and was the true winner of our meal - it was quite simply divine. So while the drinks are decent and the food may not be worth writing home for, the ambiance was truly fantastic. Catcher in the Rye embodies all that a neighborhood bar should be - warm and welcoming and fun; a great local bar to relax and connect with friends. In sum, I will definitely be back!

Yelp
I went to catcher in the rye for a birthday party. I'll start with the good things first there is no cover charge and not worried about a dress code which I'm surprised because it's in Toluca Lake near Burbank. Anyway, first thing I noticed they had a lot of parking in the back lot of parking on the street so that was awesome. Went inside. The space was nice had a bar the bathrooms were clean but then after that he is where everything goes bad. The service was horrible. The restaurant was packed!! So I'm not sure if they did not expect this. It was a weekend so I'm not sure why not. There were 2 servers for the entire restaurant . There were 3 bartenders. There were menus on the table, but no one ever came around and asked if we wanted any water let alone anything to eat. There was also a drink menu on the table. No one came around and asked if we wanted anything. Finally, I waved someone down no one came. He looked at me and ignored me so then I got up and I went to the server I saw and I said can I order and he said oh no I'm sorry I was told that you have to order at the bar that was odd. Maybe they should've made an announcement come by the tables let everybody know so I went to the bar to order. I wanted brussels sprouts and cauliflower and sliders. The bartender charged my car for all three of these items, he gave me a number I said are you going to bring it to my table? He said yes, I said can I have a copy of my receipt please and let me mention that I try to get his attention for at least five minutes to ask him for a copy of my receipt then the other bartender, I asked her, and then I saw Jason the manager. I said I am trying to get a copy of the receipt I signed. He looked at the receipt and said we don't have cauliflower and we don't have brussels sprouts. I was in shock disbelief, almost laughable, but it was not I said, what do you mean you have already charged me for it so what were you going to bring to my table? That's the part that got me like you don't have it you charge me for it I was going to go sit down with my number on a stick what were you going to bring me and you charged me for something you did not have so now I point out the bartender who took my order he's reprimanding him in front of me then he said what do you want me to do do you want me to refund it which was a dumb question of course I want you to refund it if you don't have it I'm so confused by this place now then he finally said I will make it for you OK so you do have brussels sprouts and you do have cauliflower you just didn't want to make it. This was so crazy and then he said I will bring it to you myself like that makes everything all better and fixes everything and it did not, he finally brought it over. The brussels sprouts were great. The sliders were great. The cauliflower was terrible. It was like he dumped out a bag of frozen cauliflower. Put it in the microwave and put it on a plate. No seasoning no sauce no batter. No nothing just terrible. We eat all of our food. We spend all this money on drinks and all our dirty dishes stayed on our table for ever I picked them up and took them to the bar. Also, we were cutting a cake. Excuse me prior to the cake. I ordered the brussels sprouts and cauliflower and sliders. I ordered enough for the table. I asked one of the waiters can you bring me six more plates and forks he said OK and he never did I got up I said what happened to my forks and plates. They were literally sitting right there clean next to the bar, he said I'll bring them to you. I said just give them to me I can take them myself I'm standing right next to him. He totally forgot about me and had no intention on bringing me plates and forks horrible service. Just horrible. They had an awesome DJ I don't know if the DJ is always there, but the manager JASON needs to hire more people or a train better because that service would make me never want to go there again.

Great drinks with a very mellow atmosphere. Good selection of games to play while you drink.

Yelp
I just hosted my boyfriend's 40th birthday at Catcher in the Rye and we had the best time. Eric, the owner, was our point of contact and he was more than happy to host us. Communication was excellent! The night of, Kim, Cameron, and Becca took superb care of our guests. Everyone was impressed with their large selection of specialty cocktails. I've lived in this neighborhood for over a decade and I've seen this bar go through some changes. It definitely seems like people are going less sense the pandemic. While the food menu is currently in flux, the cocktails are still high quality unique creations and the decor has remained unchanged. We were able to throw a party for 30 guests without reserving the bar-- on a Saturday night. That's unheard of in LA. We were given charge of the music and everything. They were so nice and accommodating. My boyfriend had an unforgettable 40th thanks to Eric and his crew. Definitely consider having a party or just some drinks here! Let's keep this neighborhood treasure thriving!

Yelp
This is one of my favorite bars to meet people in Toluca Lake! There's not a ton in this area in the way of bars, so Catcher in the Rye is great to have around. Really fun book-themed ambiance and yummy drinks. Solid apps. Avid readers will love it!

Yelp
Updating my score on this place. It's so sad. It used to be a great local bar that did craft cocktails and had good food. They got bought by a new owner and went through what I hoped were growing pains. But it's just been a long downward descent. At first the place started looking bad with the addition of a very bright white neon sign inside that kills the vibe. All the plants outside died and disappeared and the tables and walls that remained were in such disrepair that they looked more like the employee smoking area you would find next to the dumpsters out back than an inviting front entrance. Then everything else started going down the tubes. The food became mediocre. The selection of alcohol was weak. One time I asked if they had a certain brand of liquor, I was told yes. Then the proceeded to pour a different brand. I didn't mind the other brand but why lie? Then the service, which used to be friendly and chill, switched to a bartender yelling across the bar in a frat house "let's party f*ckers" kind of way. This vibe is great in Hollywood or near one of the colleges. But Iin chill Toluca Lake it was just off putting. I really had hopes that this bar would find its way and get back to being a great local hang. It's right next door to Aierloom Cafe which has established itself as an always busy, great food, great service, local business. And the owners and managers of Catcher in the Rye would have done well to walk next door for some advice or inspiration. But they never did. It remains an empty skeleton of a bar with a newly installed TV to completely kill the vibe entirely. I assume it was added so the owner has something to watch while he sits alone in his bar and brags to his friends that he owns a business...because I don't know who else would want to go at this point.

Yelp
Craft cocktails are fairly priced, chill ambience. Super nice gal behind the bar. Service was a bit slow, but conversation made with the staff was prime. It was a relaxing experience and felt like everyone was chill and doing their best. Catcher in the Rye is delicious. If you like cinnamon, get this.

Yelp
Went here on a Friday evening awhile back after my husband mentioned they sometimes hit it for lunch when at work. This place is super cute and has both a Los Angeles trendy but also homey feel. We went early so there was plenty of seating, but as the evening went on it definitely began to pick up making it a good option for either early drinks in a chill atmosphere, or a fun mid-late evening bar that has some bustling energy. I love love loved all the clever drink names, and also they tasted great. I had a Huckleberry Fin followed by A Life in Lavender. I liked the second more, but would recommend both. An unexpected surprise was the food, and I mean in a good way. We did a few different side dishes to split, and while there was a little bit of a wait, everything was absolutely delicious. Will definitely be back.

Yelp
Great spot. Chef Thomas makes the best burgers around. Service is also very pleasant here along with some creative and tasty cocktails.

Yelp
This is a cute, low-key, non-pretentious bar in my neighborhood. I've been here a few times and feel like the drinks stand out more than the food, bartenders are all kind and friendly, and I love the casual and comfortable vibe and creative literary themes. The food menu is pretty limited (and a little pricey for what it is!) and I don't think I'd recommend coming for dinner and drinks, but more so if you want a bar snack while you're imbibing. The pork belly tacos are my fave, followed by the sliders with brie and quail eggs. The cocktail menu is much more comprehensive and unique, and we'd had a lot of fun trying different varieties (points to whoever named the drinks!) I like the layout and that they have some board games available. I'd like this bar more without the few bright lights... the moody, dark library theme would hit just right if it were just a little dimmer. The music is also a little too loud to hear the person right next to you. If acoustics were a little better, this would be an amazing space for live music! I'm glad this neighborhood bar with character is here, and we always enjoy stopping in.

Yelp
Chill spot.. glad they opened back up! The food was meh.. I don't think people come here for that but it's a chill spot to hang out with a bunch of friends and a full bar of friendly people! Definitely will come on another night since we went on a Wednesday and usually bars aren't as busy - but it was perfect to catch up with friends!

Yelp
yesterday my mum took me to this place because of how I love books. Honestly , I feel in love. I love how all the drink options are all quotes from books..!! I felt like I sparked with joy! and the waiters and bar tenders were super friendly and have such a great personality. I loved having conversations with them. I 100% know I'm going to come back after work to read a book and relax here. the one thing I do think is, they need to change the music. Make more instrumental with some lyrics. to make it fit more with the vibe of the name. other than that, I love it...! And the food was really good! But I do think they should have more options with the meat like Turkey or impossible. Because some people like me , don't eat red meat.

Yelp
Tagged along with my BF and his friends and it happened to be my birthday so I was wearing a birthday sash. Went to order a drink for myself and was told that for a group our size everything had to be on one tab. What???? I don't even know these people! Why on earth would one take responsibility for an entire group's tab?? I walked away with no drink and a bad taste in my mouth. Just how I wanted to spend my birthday. :-/ this policy is stupid AF and they should really re-think this policy. Just let people pay for their drinks themselves! Especially if the place is half empty! Completely turned me off to even wanting to order anything. I refused to go up to the bar after that and just sat at the table empty handed. Gave 2 stars because the ambience is nice. Without this ridiculous policy I would have given 5 stars.

Yelp
Excellent craft cocktails with friendly social staff. There is something for all types of flavor preference in cocktails. If you don't like it, they'll make something that'll be suit you. Parking: street parking can get pretty tough.

Yelp
Catcher in the Rye is a pretty cool neighborhood spot! Ended up here last night (11/9/21) for my first time. I had tried to stop in multiple times throughout the past year, but they have been closed up until very recently. I'm happy this place finally reopened! Unfortunately, Catcher in the Rye is currently without a chef, so it is drinks only at the moment. While my friend ordered a cocktail, I just ordered their IPA on tap. Prices are pretty average for the area. I believe my pint of beer was ~$9.50, which is a little pricey. The space itself is fairly large, but it was pretty empty on a Tuesday night. Definitely low-key. They have a lot of games and books for guests to enjoy, which is nice. Overall, we had a fun experience. The drinks were good and the service was friendly!

Yelp
SCAM BAR STAY AWAY. Unethical business practices as described by other Yelpers! Came for Taco tuesday a few weeks ago 2 bucks each now they're 4 bucks hah no TT deal there! Plus they don't tell you it ends at 7pm. So what did I do? Went to my local Fiesta Truck Taco stand at Mag & Cahuenga had tacos for ONE DOLLAR! YAY!

Yelp
What a cute, living room vibe. I came here around 10:30-11p, we just missed the kitchen (story of my life) lol my sister and I sat at the bar and looked over the menu. There are A LOT of whisky options. Their "well-whisky" is Bulleit Bourbon. The bartender, Kamiko, was extremely patient and made great recommendations based on our preferences. Side note: There was a guy who had been there since before we got there who was beginning to get tipsy and she checked on him, offered him water and very politely cut him off. Sometimes bartenders can be brash so it was cool to see how she handled it. For drinks I ordered a Tequila drink on their, pretty lengthy, specialty menu that had aperol(I think) & my sister had a smoked rosemary margarita where they smoked the glass with rosemary. There are also games like scrabble, Jenga , clue etc that you can play. All in all a great experience, great bartender & chill vibe if you want a nice drink w/o all the turn up. I will definitely be back :)

Yelp
Very cute place, has board games and jenga to play while enjoying drinks named after books and snacking on some Mac and cheese.

Yelp
I have been here several times and usually don't have a problem but I went during the Super Bowl with my friends and it was horrible. I was celebrating my birthday and had told friends to meet me there if they could. I have been there for friend's birthdays before and never had to make a reservation since there isn't table service. Once about 6 of us were there the bartender said that we all had to be on one tab or she wouldn't serve us and that we should have made a reservation. It was not only embarrassing but very strange considering we were the only 6 people in the whole place. I asked if I could speak to someone about this policy because their website doesn't work so I don't know where this policy is stated and how I could have known about it beforehand. The bartender said I could call the number on the website and that if someone picked up that would be the manager. I called and spoke to a manager who said that it was just common sense to call ahead about a party of 6 or more. I told her that I work at a similar style bar in Ktown and we don't have a policy like that and that it wasn't stated anywhere on their non existent website so It's not common sense. The manager ended up hanging up on me because I was asking for them to have an owner get in touch with me to explain how they can enforce a service charge policy when it isn't stated anywhere. There were only 6 other patrons besides the 13 of my friends that showed up for the entire night so they weren't even packed or serving tables. I have loved this bar before but the service was honestly horrible for a night when we were the largest group and practically the only patrons. The manager also said that the service charge was because credit card companies charge the establishment but no matter where you go that is the case and a service charge is supposed to go to the staff not the establishment... It felt very sketchy and gross for them to be enforcing a "policy" that I did not know about, could not find on their nonexistent website and could not have anyone explain to me. While the drinks were decent the food is less that great and none of it was worth the fight that I had to go through just to order a few drinks with my friends.

Yelp
I haven't had the food here, so this review is primarily based on drinks and general service/space/ambiance etc. I like that this spot is kinda on it's own (so it doesn't get too crowded) and while it's not too big (still intimate) it doesn't feel suffocating. Drinks here are pretty great. The Catcher in the Rye is my favorite... basically an old fashioned but with cinnamon simple syrup. I KNOW!!! Prices are what you expect from a bar in LA these days ($10-$14 for a drink is average). Stay Cheerful ;)

Yelp
Cool little spot in the valley. Was my second spot on my bday adventures. Atmosphere that appeals to a wide age range and backgrounds so it was perfect for a group to find a drink. The food was a little weird like the mac and cheese isn't really mac and cheese so I wouldn't order food but for some cocktails and convo or game playing it's perfect.

Yelp
Went here for a friend's birthday and oh, man, if you're a fan of the classics or just looking for a fun-themed bar, come to Catcher In the Rye! They have a fun drink and food menu with of course the tongue-in-cheek names. Want to check out The Secret Garden? Or try Caulfield's Corn? Go for it! There's a small parking lot in the back and shouldn't be an issue to grab a spot if you come early enough. I'm a fan of the couches, but they also have high-top tables and the bar. Boardgame fan? Play a game of Jenga while you order away. A very no-nonsense, typical LA casual spot to try out!

Yelp
Great drinks and great food! Bartenders seemed a bit overwhelmed, but were doing their best to catch up. The place does smell a little musty, but I didn't notice it after a couple drinks. Haha.

Yelp
Good drinks and good atmosphere also decided to order some food and got the pork belly tacos which were delicious! If you're looking for a low key bar in the Toluca lake area I'd suggest this spot.

Yelp
I hardly ever leave reviews but this was a very strange/bad experience. I went on a Tuesday night and was greeted quickly which was nice, and then proceeded to stand at the bar (where you order) for 20 minutes without a single person saying a single word to me or my two friends (and there were about 6 people behind the bar who refused to even look our direction). It's also worth nothing that there were roughly only 7 other customers in the entire place, and none of them were at the bar. Finally ordered and it was clear no one even knew the menu, and it took almost 15 minutes for our drinks to be made (again, we were the only ones with an order in for drinks in the entire place). Food was quick though and pretty solid, though nothing special. Ambiance is like a coffee shop with books and games which I loved, but it was weird vibes for a bar. Relatively bright lighting and 80s music playing. Very much felt like it was everyone's first day there. Hopefully management can get things together because it has potential!

Yelp
Been here twice and exciting for the next time! I came here for a friend's birthday and loved the decor here. Lots of wood and classy decor, but very bookish as well. The place always doesn't feel too busy to me while still feeling like a cool place to hang out. I really feel like my type of people usually hang out here. People who are nerdy and into gaming of some sort. The drinks are not just cute by name, but delicious, and I say this as someone, my hand to heaven, doesn't like drinking. I only make a point to drink when I'm at KBBQ (which I haven't been able to do since the pandemic started). The drinks are all named after classic literary works. I believe me and my roommate's current favorite is the Secret Garden. It's refreshing and fruity, and masks the booze very well. Also, the food is not bad either. It's definitely on the pricey side because it's a bar, but it's good in comparison to the throwaway food you see in other bars. I really enjoy the bourbon burgers and pork sliders espeically if we didn't have dinner before coming. They are both very flavorful and keeps you coming back for more. But if you are looking for something lighter, their veggie dishes are also bomb. The artichoke dip, brussel sprouts, and cauliflower are also very delicious, and I'm someone that has a child's palette and likes their meat. We also always enjoy the staff. Please tip them generously! They are always quick and joyful. I remember for the first time we came here, it was probably supposed to be a quiet night and early close since there was only one person manning the bar, and they still were ready and willing to serve the annoying 10+ people (us) that rolled in. Parking is also pretty easy. There is always easy street parking nearby.

Yelp
Catcher In the Rye was my favorite new find for 2018. We went for drinks and appetizers on New Year's Eve. So chill! Such fun ambience! All of the drinks are named with literary themes from different classics from literature. There is even a beer list called Holden's Hops. Lots of comfy couches and pillows to get snuggly on -- a nice touch. Lots of board games too! My hubby and I played 3 games of Jenga. Our server was drop dead gorgeous, yet she was also nice, friendly, and unsnobby! How cool is that? She wore an absolutely gorgeous sequined sparkly halter top that really suited the New Year's Eve vibe. I had two drinks: the Secretariat and the Stay Gold Ponyboy. I'd like to go back and slowly work my way through the entire cocktail list. We shared an order of Holden's Cauliflower: roasted cauliflower with capers and dates. Delish! All the food looks very reasonably priced. This is definitely a new find that will bring me back again. Located right off the corner of Riverside and Cahuenga. Used to be Chez Nous. I don't know if it's the same or different ownership, but definitely go try it out. Holden Caufield and Ponyboy Curtis would both want you to. So would Holden's sister, Phoebe and Ponyboy's brothers, Darry and Sodapop!

Yelp
Such a charming place. On a Thursday evening a friend and I came by to check out Catcher in the Rye. At first was confused where the entrance was. lol Nice hideout in the Toluca Lake area. All drinks are well crafted and have interesting names after books. The lounge is low lighted yet warming. There also is a good selection of food on their menu. Parking: small lot in the back and street parking VERDICT: Rinse and repeat

Yelp
They just added wings and fries to the menu and let me just say mrs robinsons has better wings these are worst than Buffalo Wild Wings wings and those are the lowest of low for and the fries id rather go down the block for some mc Donald's fries they're way better than these fake fries Over service I'd say they have too many bartenders for no one to serve you which is sad hope this place gets better before they close down soon
