People in France Are Brawling Over Discounted Nutella | Eater

"During Paul Bocuse’s funeral in Lyon at St. Jean Cathedral, I learned that roughly 1,000 people were seated for the service while more than 1,500 chefs — including Alain Ducasse, Joël Robuchon, and Anne-Sophie Pic — attended in their white jackets, and the overflow crowd watched on two large projection screens outside." - Chris Fuhrmeister

Holy sacred cathedral where construction began in 1175 dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. The architecture is beautifully complimented by brilliant colorful stained glass depicting various moments in Christianity. The kaleidoscope of colors wash over your mind, body, and soul. The Grace of God fills every corner of the cathedral.

The Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste in Lyon is a remarkable blend of spiritual significance and historical grandeur. Situated in the heart of Vieux Lyon, this cathedral is not only an architectural masterpiece but also houses one of the most fascinating timepieces in Europe: the Lyon Astronomical Clock. Construction of the cathedral began in 1180 and was completed in 1476, showcasing a harmonious blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles. As the seat of the Archbishop of Lyon, it has been central to the city’s religious life for centuries. The cathedral’s façade and interior are adorned with intricate details that reflect its historical importance . One of the cathedral’s most captivating features is its astronomical clock, a 9-meter-tall marvel dating back to the 14th century. Reconstructed in 1661 by Guillaume Nourrisson after its destruction in 1562, the clock is a testament to medieval engineering and artistry . The clock’s intricate mechanism includes an astrolabe that indicates the date and positions of celestial bodies, as well as a perpetual calendar accurate until the year 3008 . Its automata perform a daily show at noon, 2 PM, 3 PM, and 4 PM, featuring figures like angels striking bells and a rooster crowing .

The cathedral was a welcome surprise during our visit to Lyon. Despite not being as well known as some of the other cathedrals in France, it did not fail to amaze. The architecture is amazing, particularly the gilded gold on the inside of the main mass area. We came on Sunday during mass and had to wait outside for a bit while service was taking place. You can also go from the backside towards the inner chamber for a different look at the inside of the cathedral of underneath which was quite nice.

The Cathedral is just located opposite a nice square of old Lyon town. Upon entering one grazes over a beautiful place not only to have a prayer as well to enjoy the splendour of architectural greatness.

Visiting Saint-Jean Cathedral in Vieux Lyon was one of the most memorable moments of my student life in France. Unlike modern Lyon, the cathedral feels like stepping back into the Middle Ages. Its Gothic façade is stunning, with detailed stone carvings and a peaceful square in front where locals and tourists gather. Inside, the atmosphere is quiet and almost timeless; the stained-glass windows and the astronomical clock left me in awe. I often go there not only as a tourist but also as a student looking for calm between classes. The neighborhood around the cathedral is equally charming, full of small cafés and cobbled streets. While entry is free, the sense of history and spirituality is priceless. For me, Saint-Jean is more than just a religious site — it’s a place to slow down, reflect, and feel connected to Lyon’s centuries-old soul.

This Roman Catholic church was built in almost 300 years between the end of the 12th century and the end of the XV century. The main reason to visit it is the beautiful astronomical clock from the XVII century, that indicates the date and the position of the planets and stars.
