How to Help: Fight Hunger and Support Local Restaurants in Las Vegas | Eater Vegas

"A large social-services agency that directs roughly 89 cents of every donated dollar to client services, offers Meals on Wheels and daily prepared meals onsite, operates a food pantry open Monday through Friday (8 a.m.–2 p.m.) where registered clients can pick up a monthly bag of food, and runs a dining facility that provides a boxed lunch daily from 10 to 11 a.m." - Susan Stapleton

Front office staff are helpful and friendly, and very thankful for what they do but everything me and my children come i always see single people and other walking with there pastrys & pies and cakes and I never get that on my cart ...it happened today again and the last few times I went... so this time my son went and asked if he could have a pastry she had a snotty response and came out with the smallest pie ever...right after she gave my son that small pie a man came out with a big apple pie...they do me and babies wrong and give more to single people... my son asked me did he do something wrong to the lady 😟..i understand the food is free and im never ungrateful but today lady's in the back how do u sleep at night treating people and homeless children that way?

The security staff are untrained ..and act like correctional officers...many employees seemed more depressed than the homeless people...this easily reflects the constant turn-over rate..the shelter itself .is full of bed-bugs and desert ticks..it's a feeble effort... however..a very good place to earn a cynicism degree...

This place is a God sent from the heavens. The security guards are polite, professional, respectful, caring, compassionate human beings, especially Alexander, Smook, Cisco, Reggie, Matt, Jimmy, Hicks, and the rest of the security professionals of Catholic Charities. The staff and management are phenomenal when it comes to caring about individuals and the community.

"A Catholic food bank should be a place of compassion, where those in need feel supported, not judged. While the assistance is appreciated, volunteers must reflect values of empathy, kindness, and respect. No one should leave feeling discouraged—every person deserves to be treated with dignity

After losing my home last summer due to a family tragedy and facing serious financial hardship I found myself stranded living on the streets of Las Vegas. I stayed at the Catholic Charities shelter for a couple of weeks before being accepted into the Men’s Renew for Hope program. Many of us, myself included, were struggling to survive during that record breaking summer heat, with temperatures exceeding 115 degrees on many days. The shelter closes daily from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., so unless you had a job or an interview, your only option was to pack up your belongings each morning and spend the day at Courtyard, the facility next door. This daily routine was exhausting and mentally draining for everyone. Still, I was grateful to have a cool place to sleep at night. At the time, the internet at Catholic Charities was down, which delayed my official enrollment into the program. This program promised a permanent bed, employment support, and “intensive” case management. Once accepted, I was assigned a caseworker named Lynette. Within days, I secured employment with a former employer. I informed Lynette and began training. She asked for a formal letter of employment, which I provided after my first week. Upon receiving it, she told me I wasn’t allowed to take a job that paid commission and said I’d have to quit or be removed from the program. I explained that I knew the job well, had previous success in the role, and was confident it was my best shot at getting back on my feet. She told me I didn’t have a choice if I wanted to keep my bed, I had to quit the job. This was in mid July, during one of the hottest summers on record. Out of fear of being back on the streets, I quit my new job. The very next day, Lynette informed me that I would be written up for missing mandatory meetings, meetings that mostly served as check-ins and rarely offered meaningful help. There was nothing “intensive” about the case management. There were only two or three staff members overseeing the entire group. Clearly understaffed, I did my best to be kind and respectful toward Lynette, but she was often cold and unapproachable. One day, in a group meeting, Lynette yelled at a young man for not finding a job quickly enough. It was a deeply uncomfortable moment. The next day, he was gone. I never saw him again. The meetings, sometimes two or three a day, often interfered with job interviews and employment opportunities. When I asked Lynette what would happen if I got written up, she said I could be kicked out of the program. This was just one day after quitting my new job, at her request. That evening, I went to bed uncertain about my future. The next morning, Lynette was out. Another staff member reassured me that everything was fine and said I could go to my job interview that day. When I returned that evening, my belongings had been placed into large trash bags. I was told I had been kicked out for missing meetings while I was working my new job. No one had warned me. I was told earlier that morning that things were fine. But it was already done. I was escorted off the property, out into the intense heat. A part of me broke that day. I had put my trust and patience into this program, and into myself. I was doing everything I could to rebuild my life. I believe Catholic Charities does not live up to the image they present to the public. Their goal seems more focused on keeping people in the program rather than actually assisting in recovery in the way that they promised. That summer, I met a man in the shelter who was later found dead from heatstroke on the sidewalk. No one talks about stories like his. To be fair, the volunteers in the cafeteria were kind, and a few staff members showed compassion, and so, I reached out to Catholic Charities to voice my concerns, but I never received a response. Some of my personal belongings were never returned. I’m not writing this with any expectations. I just want to shed light on the inner world of homeless life in Las Vegas.

The female staff and management is very rude that work in the food Pantry. i had my ID but not my power bill so they didnt want to help me. From my observation the young men that work in the wherehouse only gave dog food to the Spanish speaking people

Yelp
Heads up to anyone seeking housing assistance at Help of Southern Nevada and the Useless, and Senseless visit to 'Cathlic Charities of Southern Nevada. I am a Caregiver and my patient who is renting a spare room from me is on SSI Diability. I am moving in two weeks into a one bedroom. I was seeking Emergency Housing Assistance at 'Help of Southern Nevada so my patient will have a place to live when I'm gone. Their web sight says that they take 'Walk In's only on Wednesdays between 7am and 3pm. After waking up at 5:30 am for us to get ready and be there by 7:00 am, Help at Souther Nevada told us that THURSDAY was the only day that they take walk in's? They also said that due to limited slots, the people usually start lining up between 4:00 am to 5:00 am. They then directed us to 'Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada at: 1501 Las lVegas Blvd. When we got there, they asked if my paitient had a 'clear card'? I answered "no". I was then handed a form to be filled out and returned to get a 'clear card'. After helping my patient complete it, we were then directed to another room and handed it to a person named Dee. She then gave me some more forms to be filled out which was about 8 to10 pages long with at least 50 questions to tell his life story. After reviewing the completed application, she then told us to have a seat and she will have a Case Manager speak with us. However, nobody knew where the Case Manager was? After the Case Manager finally showed up. They both went over the application together while we waited. They then called us into the office, only to tell us that "in order to be qualified for help, a person has to be homeless and living in the streets for at least 90 days! I was SHOCKED, BEWILDERED and uterly DISGUSTED and my patient was HEARTBROKEN and DISGUSTED as well, for having us waste so much time and effort - filling out all the forms and getting our hopes up - All for Nothing! I then asked "Why were we not told this information from the very beginning"? Their answer was that "It had to come from a Case Manager. Such Incompetence and Inept Unprofessionalism within an Organization (not to mention total lack of Common Sense) goes well above and beyond UNBELIEVABLE!

Yelp
It's much too sad for me. I'm Catholic &attended Catholic School for Girls in High School.Getting help from the food pantry was horrible, they gave me nothing but expired cookies&bread, awful can food&junk food while they gave others a whole huge turkey, lots of blocks of cheeses, milk, frozen meats, tons of delicious food selection and that was only for one lady just like me. I was first in line, made sure to get up early for this. Rude welcome for my first time as well. Not very nice.Favoritism.Clientle are related or friends/associates/connections.Corrupt procedure, process and system. Shame on you!

Yelp
I want the guy who helped me at the end to know that the issue with giving him my ID was that I don't have one currently. He seemed to think I was skittish about him having my cards. I offered him my iPhone so he shouldn't think that way... but he said as he accepted my Costco card "see , I can't do anything with that." At first I thought that meant it was not adequate collateral. A minute too late I realized what he meant. Dude, my phone was unlocked. This is a great place. If you need help with groceries, come on in. It now follows a pantry walk through model so food waste is minimal. Ten pounds of "groceries" Five pounds of produce. Very nice staff.

Yelp
You're getting free food, so the best value. The hours change all the time, so that can be frustrating if you're not a morning person. Went on a Saturday this month, and they were closed, so that was a change from the posted times from the previous month. The closing times can range from 2:30-4:30, but it's really hard to find the current hours so I'll usually call before going in the afternoons. It used to be a shopping trip where you can pick what you will eat, but they have just been handing out boxes for the last 3 years. There are plans to go back to choosing your own sometime this year.

Yelp

Yelp
The Food Pantry, your people at the Front desk do not belong there. There are as Friendly as a Rattlesnake. They are Strict and Rude to Poor indigent people 4 days before Easter and that was me watching them be rude to others not me so much, me they hassled but at least I got my Food. You turned away a man due Sunday the 21st when in fact you should have served him. Jerks on that one. Your Housing has an $800.00 income necessity, I make $791.00 on my Disability and you denied me the waiting list for said Housing. Jerks on that count too. However your Volunteers in the back are Beautiful wonderful souls. The ones you pay should be Fired immediately for Lack of compassion and for turning away anyone due on your days closed including Easter that was Wrong!!!! Had I seen that poor man outside I would of shared my Food with him. Poor old guy. Shame on you Catholic charities turning people away before Easter !!!!

Yelp
I am trying to find out about the Saint Vincent Help Apartments. If anybody has ever lived there and they can tell me about the building and what the apartments are like I would appreciate it. The address for it is 1521 N. Las Vegas Blvd. If you can tell me anything about the apartments, please do.

Yelp
They deliver 7 meals (tv dinner type) and do this from donations and the kindness of their heart. They are one of the nicest and best things I've heard of so far they're also known as Meals on Wheels. My grandma is 94 and if it weren't for meals-on-wheels she may not be getting enough food. Thank you so much guys. From the bottom of my heart I cannot thank you enough!! 5 stars!

Yelp
What a great group of people. When I was down & out and couldn't get Thanksgiving dinner , they were handing out complete dinners from Turkey to Pumpkin pie and evrything in between. These people are always there for you when you are in a pinch.

Angel B.

Yelp
This place aint all what it seems. The staff is so rude and disrespectful!!! It's like they only help ppl with SSI or disability.(I wonder why) You wait in this long ass line to ask for an article of clothing only for them to say they don't have it. Well just tell me that before I have to sit and wait for a 1 1/2 hrs. No resources are ever available. Which is probably another lie. The staff talk a big game but can't back it up. Everybody wants to be a big shock, look down on the less fortunate I guess to make themselves feel better

Yelp
This organization along with many churchs helps the homeless more than any other in the Las Vegas area. The people who work and volunteer here are the nicest you will ever meet. I speak from personal experience. Catholic charities is truly a blessing!

Yelp
I appreciated their help when I was between jobs with the food commodities program. What I did not not appreciate is the treatment from the staff. Do not treat me like I am a lowlife and have no sense! This place can make you feel like you are scraping the bottom of the damn barrel! I know better than that so, they did not make me feel bad about being me! There are many folks who had respectful jobs and have to come here because they do not qualify for public assistance, no one wants to be treated with any respect and dignity! I am now working as a Federal employee and went to find out about the turkey giveaway, if they were going to do it. I never got my answer because some abrasive little black man; I'm Black and Native American so, do not get offended and if he was white or any other race, it would still be the same...this abrasive, little black man was so, so very rude to me! And then is compadre, some dingbat Mexican dude, made a rude comment as well. All I did was just look at them and shake my head! It is bad enough coming to these places when you are down and out, but when you are now a government official, and I did not let them know this, it sickens me moreso now than it did when I was unemployed. Where is the Love?

Cyrese P.

Yelp
Cyrese P. Without hope and promise where would humanity stand in God's eyes. The Catholic charities group, took the primary need for food, and my hunger to the sidelines. Giving me the will to keep trying to succeed. This wonderful charitable organization, took away the distraction of hunger, eased that primary burden. They do such a good service for L.V., I am grateful, and thankful this holiday season. Now, still not in complete control of finances, I have hope that soon things will get better in this, my precious life. Thank you for all you do, Catholic Charities of S. Nevada. Bless you one and all. It is my desire to help out in food service at Christmas but, unable to call on the telephone....the # not in service...please correct on website...Love to you...

George P.

Yelp
They keep the poor and desperate people waiting like you never believe. Cannot get live person when you call. They never return calls.
