Business Owners Grapple With Looting Losses and the Need for Justice | Eater

"A beloved Black-owned neighborhood restaurant in Ferguson that was damaged during recent protests; the owner described the experience as devastating and compared it to being struck by lightning twice, recalled that protesters previously protected the business in 2014, credited both police and protesters for helping prevent further harm this time, and benefited from community fundraising to repair windows and pay employees while closed." - Jenny G. My spouse and I came from Illinois down to St.Louis MO on a small 2 day getaway…we ended up hungry after a long day of exploring and wanted to grab a bite to eat before we hit the road back home Not only did I search high and low for places did some research on TikTok and stumbled on to Cathy’s kitchen it was a bit out of our way but honestly IT WAS WORTH IT the environment was so welcoming! So genuine not only that her restaurant was easy to located and had an easy way to order they do not accept cash but accept card and or tap only !! Which was easy and convenient not only did she have amazing options of food choices but her Food let me say this WAS NOT ONLY DELICIOUS but OUTSTANDING her food felt like it came with so much love and from the heart like she had more then just a passion but just the most genuine love on cooking It is a blacked owned business ran by the most sweetest amazing soul I have ever met Cathy not only does she own it she is the chef behind those amazing meals she cooks I believe she has her family help as well the most kindest folks this places is a hidden gem for sure !!! my spouse and I will be coming back anytime we come down to St. Louis again I definitely recommend the Cajun pasta with the two piece wings or the catfish sandwich with fries definitely 1000/1000 best place to eat out there !!

I had the Thursday Special with the Chicken, Shrimp and Coleslaw. Hot , Fresh and crispy! Did NOT disappoint! Friendly vibe with staff and a pleasure to talk with the owner

The atmosphere is inviting and comfortable. The people are so friendly, service was top notch. We loved the little delivery robot. The best part was the food! It was perfect, flavorful, perfect portion sizes, and DELICIOUS. Italian foodie from Pittsburgh that was with me and is very judgmental said it’s the BEST food he’s had in all of Illinois/Missouri. No pics cause we just dived into the meal.

We were in St. Louis for the weekend and based on some Tiktoc reviews we decided to add this to our list to try. I ordered the chicken wings with shrimp combo and I did enjoy them, they were nice and crispy. My hubby ordered the philly cheese steak and he wasnt to thrilled about it, it was on an Italian bread and the meat tasted like it was made for an Italian beef sandwich, instead of a philly. We ordered my daughter a BLT and she enjoyed it. The dessert was good!! The place was nice enjoyed looking at all the picture on the wall of the celebrities who have visited. The floors were pretty sticky and dirty, and I always like to check the bathrooms of the facilities I visit but didn't go in this one. Overall decent place to check out.

I wanted to love this & was so excited after reading all the reviews but my experience was not good at all. Pros: nice atmosphere, food came quick, food came by robot to the table which was cool! Cons: you have to pay for water (even when dining in), no one asked how our food was. No hi, how or you, or proper greeting. "Have you been here before? You use your phone to order." Upon leaving no thank you for coming, how was the food, NOTHING. There was only 2 other tables occupied with less than 4 people so didn't understand the lack of customer service. Now the food: My husband had the fish po boy & it was good. Seasoned well, plenty of meat. Fries were also good. I had the pasta & it was not good at all. Very salty & sauce extremely runny, shrimp small. I called after we left to speak with a manager because a few people were in line for to go orders. I was told someone would call me back & it never happened. First impressions are important...I'm disappointed for sure.

Google
Came In happy and hungry on a Saturday at 250 pm ordered the three wings and gumbo and six wings and fries. After placing my order and taken a seat only to be told we out of wings. No apologies or nothing. The only person apologized was the guy doing the refund. But like come on trying support our own I was excited to come and get some good food but it’s Saturday the weekend and it’s not even three pm and yall out of food be frfr who ever doing the ordering needs to rethink they job title.

Stopped by Cathy’s Kitchen on our roadtrip and it did not disappoint! Every thing was perfect and delicious. Felt more like a home cooked meal ❤️‍🔥 we’d make a trip back just to try more dishes! The robot was a cool cherry on top 🤣

What an amazing diner esque place with a great twist. This is the most fantastic food I’ve had in this Ferguson area in a long time. Their atmosphere is amazing as well as their food was hot and cool. They have kiosk and a robot that even delivers for you.

Yelp
Great Food! I've visited St Louis twice, both times visiting this place. It was great.

Deosha D.

Yelp
Ordered the 3whole wings and cup of gumbo plate and a Thursday plate. After waiting 20 minutes for my food they gave me chicken that was unbattered on the gumbo plate because they "ran out of batter" and didn't say anything to me until i asked why half my chicken was naked. Then they forgot my fries after i asked for them twice. The girl at the counter was drinking a frappe in the kitchen and using the same gloves to touch orders. They also didn't have the drinks we ordered and instead of replacing them they just weren't going to give us anything. Very disappointed as this is not the experience i had last time i came to Cathy's Kitchen.

Yelp
Cathy's is a cute Route 66 themed restaurant that offers comfort foods with southern roots. I had shrimp and grits and my daughter had seafood Mac and cheese. I would have preferred more seasonings in the shrimp and grits and my daughter was pleased with her selection. The robot that delivered our meals is very cute!
google avatar

Yelp
First of I have to say the customer service is amazing! Cathy is always working and always willing to come to your table to see how you are doing! The place is really great to sit inside and eat. With pictures on the wall of her travels and where she took inspiration for her dishes is really unique. The food I had was amazing. Loved the Chicago Philly the best I have ever had at least. The voodoo shrimp was cooked perfectly and I absolutely love her strawberry cake!

Yelp
I used to eat here in college. I was really sad today when I came in and found out they don't take cash.
google avatar

Yelp
If you're dining in there are two touchscreens to complete your order. You can also scan the QR code and order. The server was very friendly and explained how everything worked. I had the seafood mac&cheese I also added sausage. It was very tasty. There was also cool the robot brought your food.

Myles H.

Yelp
This place is true gem. The food is absolutely amazing! Nostalgic ambiance. The chef was very warm and welcoming. She walked me down the street and into different businesses to showcase the history and charm of the community . It was a genuine experience.

FigureIT O.

Yelp
ABSOLUTE GARBAGE!!!! These people don't even have the common decency & respect to add fresh toppings. I was given rotted lettuce & a 1/2 of 1/2 mushed tomato! THIS IS MY 2nd & final time having a horrible experience! THIS TIME IT WAS WAY WORSE! O STARS

Yelp
We made our last food stop here before going home. I've had soul food in different spots across the country. Cathy's takes the #1 spot after our visit. Menus are available via a QR code so there's no pressure on placing your order immediately. We had the St Louis Shrimp, BBQ fries, Chicken and sausage Cajun pasta, and a catfish filet. All of the food is a perfect representation of making the simple things right and not overcomplicating your food. The shrimp was fried and had a good light batter and was spicy but not too spicy. The fries were cooked and seasoned well. The catfish was moist and seasoned perfectly. And the pasta was just as seasoned and cooked to perfection just as everything else was. If you're visiting please go here. The menu has everything to choose from and the food will not disappoint!

Yelp
Located in Ferguson, I am happy to see things continue to grow in this area. I've been following Cathy for some time on Instagram. I finally had the opportunity to come check them out. The place had a little bit of a diner vibe red and black decor with photos from their family travels, and celebrities. The menu is themed around the places they have traveled. New Orleans, Memphis, and Chicago to name a few. We were greeted warmly by the team. Guests can either order via kiosk at the front of the restaurant or via QR code at their table. You're meal gets delivered to your table by the most adorable server Plato! The food was delicious. My favorite city is New Orleans, and am well versed in creole and Cajun cooking. I went with the catfish po boy. I was blown away! The bread was the exact crusty French bread a traditional po boy is served on. The fish was seasoned and fried to perfection. Their aioli was the perfect combination for this sandwich. I also went with the red beans and rice. The beans were perfectly creamy. They stayed creamy once mixed in to the rice and did not dry out. The salt was a little more than I am used to, but all the flavors were perfect. My companion went with the buffalo chicken wrap. This wrap was stuffed full. The fries were also fantastic. Crisp and well seasoned and pillowy soft on the inside. I recommend paring them with a side of aioli. In all we had wonderful experience and plan to visit again soon.

Yelp
Came here with my family for a very late lunch...early dinner...because we all wanted to try the food. 1. The food is good - I had the catfish plate... with over cooked broccoli/ no pickles/ no onions / and tiny packets of hot sauce... despite the fact the menu shows ..25 cent charge for extra hot sauce. And not a single staff member even asked if I wanted it...and the menu photos shows the dish with pickles/ onions. 2. The use of technology such as QR code for the menu... needs to be updated and allow for total table orders. 3. There's a robot that serves the food to the table - yet it does not display who the food is for / no table number / nor what was ordered. It's cute... but how do we know if we got the wrong food.... 4. The place smells like burnt grease and smoky. If you come smelling like roses, you will leave smelling like old grease. 5. Our table was never cleared by any of the staff... nor is there a place for customer to put finished plates. And even when staff came from behind the grill to start closing ... not a single one of them cleared our table. When my nephew asked if we need to clean the table or if an employee was going to do it... the person setting the chairs on the tables... without wiping them down/cleaning them... said "I will get around to it." 6. Don't expect water... it's $1-$2 a bottle... with tax... despite the fact we spent over 50 bucks for a party of 4. I get COVID did a l number on businesses of all sizes. And that's not an excuse to neglect the basics... I saw in another post where the owner replied they only have a staff of 6... yet I saw 4-6 people behind the counter. We were not only people eating in the restaurant... and not a single staff member walked themselves from around the counter to see if we needed anything. If a place is going to have tables for folks to sit and eat... then there's an expectation of service... especially when the POS system has the audacity to ask for a tip at the time of payment.

Yelp
Pretty good, i understand the kiosk thing, but for the older generations, that's going to be hard for them and cause a backup when ordering. Even though it seems self-explanatory, everybody isn't savy with those things. The food was great, the chicken was a little too salty, and one wing was undercooked. All in all, I would Mist definitely come, though, her food and personality is great. The only thing I would suggest is when you have people that come from out of town to visit, she should entertain them more
google avatar

Redgie B.

Yelp
I have to admit, the menu has a great variety of options to choose from. But this restaurant has turned into a self-serve restaurant. You have to pick your seating. You have to download the menu, order from your phone, and pay from your phone with an automatic tip included. Yes, even though you're doing all of the work. ‍ I guess I'm used to great service at a sit-down restaurant, and after the service giving an appropriate tip. There's a robot that brings your meal to the table, but the meals weren't brought to the table at the same time, they were brought at two completely different times. Generally, when a party visits a restaurant they want to eat at the same time. I have to admit the shrimp chicken and spinach pasta was extremely good. I ordered the three chicken wings and gumbo, which was ok. I prefer my wings without any sauce, but the menu states you have to order a sauce. ‍ The restaurant was nice and clean.

Yelp
The food was delicious and the manager was very friendly! When my family comes in town I'm definitely going to take them here!

Yelp
SO GOOD! We are from out of town, looked up restaurants on Yelp, and HAD to come check out Cathy's! Licked the plates clean -- super fast, super seasoned, super nice service...10/10 will have to come back! We ordered the shrimp and grits per Cathy's recommendation, amazing!
google avatar

Noel F.

Yelp
My brother has raved about Cathy's for awhile, so I finally had to try. I get it!! I got take out and not only were my shrimp and grits filled to the BRIM, they were still hot when I made it home 20 minutes later! The strawberry shortcake was tasty too. I'll be back!

Yelp
Coworkers went for lunch on Thursday and difficult to find what your looking for due to the fact when googling it's a site to order from google and the business also have order inside kiosks show lay out different. Order the sweet and spicy wings naked and fries. Sauce wasn't sweet or spicy, seems to been thin out did taste salty not sure from the wings it's self or the sauce. Fries were ok. Portion size was fine.

Coach W.

Yelp
The best restaraunt this side of the Mississippi. Everything is always cooked to perfection, and the staff and atmosphere is amazing. My favorite is the philli cheesesteak, but you literally can't go wrong with any selection.
google avatar

Yelp
I'm sure by now everyone in the world knows that Cathy 's kitchen is the best! And she's always so very nice.

Yelp
Run to Cathy's Kitchen if you want amazing food, friendly and warm service and a unique experience!!

Yelp
My colleagues and I were searching for a lunch spot and discovered Cathy's Kitchen. With its good reviews, we decided to give it a try, and I'm glad we did. The food, ambiance, and service were excellent. Even the little robot was friendly, lol. I'll definitely return if I'm in St. Louis again.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try Cathy's when I visit home but this was the first time it's worked out for me. I went in with my mom and two little ones. The service and environment is 5 star. Both Ms. Cathy and the workers are welcoming and engaging, and they had the greatest Motown hits blasting. The music reminded me of childhood road trips with my parents, so it was a good time. When there was an issue with the baby's food, they suggested they refund it and make her something else. My mom is vegetarian so she went for the vegan tacos. She liked them. She also got a side of broccoli and added the mozzarella/provolone cheese blend. It was a tiny serving. She said that was the wrong cheese to add to the broccoli. I ordered the sweet and spicy salad because I'd seen a reel of them making it a few months ago. I knew it was a risk seeing as that I can't handle things that are too spicy. The sauce was heavier than I thought it would be so the salad was too spicy for me to finish. If i got it again, I'd order the sauce on the side. My toddler asked for grilled cheese (which she later refused to eat ‍). I shared half of it with the 1yo. It was a solid grilled cheese. The fries were made well; the 1yo liked them. I ordered alfredo pasta for the 1yo. They were having a shortage on heavy cream so noted that they'd refund the pasta and make the baby something else. We got her grits and asked that they throw some brocccoli in it. The broccoli was too firm to feed her even in cut up pieces but she liked the grits and my mom was happy to have some more broccoli. The toddler later finished off the baby's food. They are still operating with COVID restrictions so it's a no touch experience where customers order their own food on kiosks and it's serves in to-go containers even if you're dining in. All drinks are canned or bottled, and there is a no cash rule. My read is that it's essentially a diner with a variety of American foods. Everything we had was okay; nothing that I'd make a special trip just to eat. That said, I'd like to go back and try some other menu items.

Neenee J.

Yelp
I went today as a first time and was not pleased I ordered the Cajun seafood pasta the man told me it was supposed to be to be shrimp crawfish and scallops there was only bite size shrimp no crawfish also it was very blend no flavor and the chicken wings was blend also no seasoning not pleased at all ppl hype this place up for nothing
google avatar

Jared C.

Yelp
Cathy's was incredible! Everything was cooked to order from scratch and oh so good. Great music playing and fun atmosphere. We even got a picture with Cathy who was very friendly and accommodating. Once again, all of the food was amazing.

Yelp

Yelp
This is my go-to dish at Cathy's Kitchen, it's around 12.00. It's soooo filling, so we'll seasoned and delicious. My picky 3 year old even like it. Very large shrimp and tasty sausage in a nice cajun gravy. This is my absolute favorite thing on the menu. It comes with toasted garlic bread as well. Cathy's and her husband is always there. She's very friendly to customers and pleasant. As far as ambiance, I've never eaten inside the restaurant. I've only ordered to go.
google avatar

Veronica B.

Yelp
This is a charming little mom and pop restaurant. The fish and chicken were amazing. Shrimp and grits were very tasty.
google avatar

Janai C.

Yelp
Ma'am I did not leave incorrect information, you did not call so just say that. I actually do not have a problem with the kiosk ordering of the food & as a 35 year old millennial I actually liked it which was stated in the original review had you read it thoroughly. I've never in my life had a restaurant charge for water at a restaurant when you dine in, EVER. That's a problem for me which is my opinion & I'm entitled to that. As stated, I recognized there was not an abundance of an employees & that there was a line when we left which is why I did not ask for a manager at that time to allow those individuals the opportunity to be serviced. The way you have chosen to respond to this review speaks volumes to me. Like I stated, I wanted to love & support it especially after seeing you had just graced the Grammy's but so much for that.
google avatar

Vernecia D.

Yelp
Their seafood pasta was great. One coworker had fish and she said that was good too. Service is self serve. you order at an kiosk and a robot brings you food. Personally you can provide more jobs if there was a waiter.. I'm kinda ole school. Prefer a person. The ambiance was regular. Kinda quiet no music playing softly. Tv show a slide of the owner and all the famous people she know...
google avatar

Kathy T.

Yelp
Came here for lunch before boarding a plane because of Yelp reviews. Cute place with lots of family pictures and friendly owners. But really the hit was the seafood macaroni and cheese. I am almost always disappointed by restaurant mac and cheese, but this was a gooey, cheesy, delicious giant portion studded with shrimp. The red beans and rice was good too. But I will be dreaming of that mac and cheese for a long time more!

Malva M.

Yelp
My first time at Cathy's Kichen will not be my last. It's like I found my happy place. Everything I ate was hot and delicious.the service was very personal the young man who fixed my food came to our table to make sure we had everything we needed. My sisters and enjoyed our lunch time together there and we commented on the diversity of the Diner We are now planning a group lunch for our family to come and enjoy a taste of Ferguson. I am so glad I suggested Cathy's for our lunch outing.I did GOOD! GOOD EATING HUE COLLINS
google avatar

Dee C.

Yelp
Went there for lunch today and ordered the black bean burger, bbq seasoned fries and strawberry shortcake ( which I should not have gotten because I'm trying to lose weight). Anyway, it was the best black bean sandwich I've had in awhile, the fries were seasoned to perfection and that strawberry shortcake was the best I ever had in life!
google avatar

Kiana F.

Yelp
I would give Cathy's Kitchen a 3.5, not deserving of a 4 but not a 3. They no longer serve the food on real plates, even if you order in, so you have to use take out boxes and plastic silverware. I would prefer the former. The woman who took our food was sort of friendly, but I wouldn't call her the best welcoming party. The food made this earn the .5. I had the catfish nuggets tacos and my mother had the Sicilian pasta. Both were seasoned well and very good. We ordered two desserts to go, caramel cake and one banana pudding cake. Both were stale. I would possibly go back for the food, and just take it home.
google avatar

Tukesha H.

Yelp
It was okay. The voodoo shrimp tasted more of a bbq flavor than spice. I didn't care for them but my husband said that he would definitely come again. Service was just okay.
google avatar

Carla J.

Yelp
I went to her new location in Dellwood the place is absolutely beautiful. So me and my guy and I ordered on the kiosk. As we placed the order and it's time to check out, we saw that the tip was automatically added to the order. I don't mind tipping, but let me see what the food tastes like first. I get the order they pack in bags like get your order and go. So we got the food, and it was horrible feathers on the chicken, and you can tell the grease was old because the chicken was dark. The shrimp has gotten smaller, and the batter was so hard that when you bite the shrimp, the batter fell off. I had a bad experience at the other location, just thought because it's new things will be fresher and better. There is no need to get on here and defend your restaurant. Just do better and more consistent and make every experience the same.

Courtney H.

Yelp
The food was all right definitely have had better but also have had worse. Wanted to try their banana pudding cake. However they were out for the day. Thought it was cute that the little robot delivered our food however was disappointed that there's like poor ventilation in the restaurant, we left smelling like fried food and that definitely was a turn off.
google avatar

Yelp
Ok this is my Fourth time here and normally the mom or dau would be the cooks and i guess they Upgraded a host to be a cook and she Cant cook!!!! I had 2 cajun chicken pastas and the cajun philly. We threw most of it away because the chicken wasnt well cooked on Any of our food and it was my moms special treat bday meal. Food was so gross i wont be back sorry. They used crab boil seasonings instead of cajun which gave it a puke taste. So awful omg!!!!!
google avatar

Jaylin K.

Yelp
The food was okay I've heard great things and wanted to check them out, not the best fried shrimp I've had but it was okay. Great service and very friendly atmosphere
google avatar

Pam C.

Yelp
Kathy's kitchen is a favorite in Ferguson Missouri. It has something for me for everyone's taste. They created their menu to satisfy some of the countries states so you go in take your time read the menu I'm sure you'll find something you like.

Alexandra C.

Yelp
The vibes were immaculate and the food is the best I've had in St. Louis. We had the gumbo, seafood mac, and seafood pasta, they were all delicious. Cathy is super friendly, this place is definitely worth the stop!!
google avatar

Leroy R.

Yelp
Visited Stl & decided to try some soul food! This place is a definite go to if you're looking for good food!
google avatar

Joseph L.

Yelp
The food was made to order. The ambiance was very nice & relaxing. The food was hot & fresh! My wife & I really enjoyed our meals! I definitely will come back again! I told my daughter and sister (Cathy) about this place & they look forward to going too!
google avatar

Patrice H.

Yelp
I love their food, always fresh and hotthe owner goes out her way to greet customers as well and make sure your order is to her perfection
google avatar

Paul R.

Yelp
I ordered the Cajun Seafood Pasta mostly because of my love for scallops. Unfortunately, Cathy must have been fresh out of scallops since there was not a single one in my dish. Disappointing. Other than that the dish was good.
google avatar

Kenneth P.

Yelp
Kathy's kitchen has the most delicious food on special Fridays fried wings, fried shrimp fried chicken. Oh it's just absolutely delicious. I recommend it to anyone who come to St. Louis Missouri that they go and eat at Kathy's kitchen on South Florissant. Thank you Kathy for all of your wonderful work, and all your service to our community God bless you and keep you in the mighty name of Jesus.

Yelp
Upbeat African American-owned soul food diner-esk spot on the main drag in Ferguson, with a playful, but very run down, decor. Have counter seating in front of the grill where the food is made, in addition to both booth and table seating Serve "eclectic African American fare from across the country" ranging from po' boys to tacos. Self serve drinks Menu is organized by state of the US that food is based in I got the blackened chicken philly with fries. The fries were perfectly crispy and delicious and the sandwich was incredibly flavorful and fantastic as well. The portion was massive, and I had to take a lot of the food home. This is a soul food spot if there ever was only The staff was incredibly friendly
google avatar

Sarah J.

Yelp
I heard this place was known for epic soul food and decided to give it a try. They have indoor dining, but you have to place your order through their website anyway. This wasn't a big deal, but when they served us our food it was in take out containers even though they knew we were dining in. I did not like that part. I ordered the Cajun chicken pasta and the Cajun fries. I lived in Louisiana for 5 years and I love Cajun food, but I am a little weary of the word when it's attached to food in STL. Cathy's kitchen put my uneasiness to rest. The pasta was phenomenal. It was so flavorful and rich. The Cajun fries were also crispy and delicious. The portion size was very generous (I made two meals out of my food) which made the priciness of the menu more tolerable. I would easily eat here again.
google avatar

Lisa M.

Yelp
She can COOK. Great food ALWAYS. Dine in or take out. Cooked with quality and TASTE. I've eaten here more times than I can tell you. If your mouth is prepared for great food you will be satisfied. Continued success Cathy :)

Yelp
Best food in Ferguson! Love coming here with the family. Tase like it's 100% made with love!!!
