All the Upcoming Restaurants and Bars Opening in Minneapolis and St. Paul | Eater Twin Cities

"I’m looking forward to Catzen Coffee Bar & Den on Grand Avenue, a cat café pouring Dogwood coffee and Rishi tea, serving pies, biscuits, and pastries from Hot Hands, and letting a cast of resident rescue cats roam the cozy shop (though the cats won’t be up for adoption)." - Justine Jones

Google
Woow!!!!!!! Absolutely amazing cafe. I'd recommend anyone and everyone to come visit!! Fran and Vanessa were super kind and fast with service in making me my drink & prepping other things too! I just got a classic cold brew with some caramel and oat milk and yummm!!! Delish! The croissant was absolutely lovely as well!! Colm was the host when I visited and they were so kind! They came in & told me about some of the kitties and even gave me a sticker when Tim the cat was begging for some pets! The kitties are super kind and cozy to be around. If you visit, please be patient and work on the cats terms! It's their place, not yours, so please respect their space! Kids are allowed during specific days/times for limited amounts of times, but please only bring kids that are very respectful and won't disturb/chase after kitties. They aren't a toy or something to be held, annoyed, or rough housed with. I absolutely will be coming back! Staff (including kitties) and drinks are so great! Couldn't recommend this place enough. <3 :)

This is such a lovely spot. I could spend hours here without getting bored. If you love cats, then this is the best cat cafe. The coffees were great - my latte was really good, flavorful, rich, and smooth. The staff were incredible, too. Definitely worth checking out at least once if you're in the area.

Google
Really cute place for 10 beautiful cats very chill and friendly. If you buy any type of drink or food items you can go into the cat area and play with them. There is a also space for people who don't necessarily want to go in or are allergic to cats that can see them from a distance in the back! The coffee and food is would say is average good coffee.

Google
Very enthusiastic and friendly staff. Very clean building and cat room. Good food, coffee, and other non-alcoholic drinks. Cozy cat room. Quiet and comfortable. The room is set up to be enjoyed at length with many books supplied and many toys to entice the cats with. Had a good time. Enjoyed Tim the Enchanter Very much. Very friendly cat.

Google
If you love cats and coffee this place is for you. If you are planning to visit the cat room reservations are recommended. The coffee was delicious and the cat themed merch was fantastic. It was a bit slow when we were there as most cats were downstairs in their den and the few above were mostly napping but we still enjoyed our time. Would be a regular if I lived here.

Google
We had two large Latte’s. The coffee is extremely tasty! The coffee was like liquid clouds over our palettes. Whatever they do to their coffee, it is worth everything Holy! The area is lovely and walkable. Plenty of parking, just prepare for parallel style. As you see in pictures, the atmosphere is incredibly ZEN. With cats! The cat area is comfortable like a living room. There’s another area of seating in back that’s brighter and offers booths and plenty of light and outlets for anything you need. CatZen is worth every stop. Playing with cats is a dream bonus while you drink amazing coffee. The menu is also as delectable as the coffees! I highly recommend the Fig & Gouda!

Google
THIS is the kind of “mom & pop” business I LOVE in our neighborhood. Quirky and fun. The place is cozy and the coffee is great. I’m not a cat lover and even I was charmed by the place. For those of you who can’t imagine sipping coffee with cats, the cafe is divided into to separate spaces a cats are contained to one side. The decor is funky and eclectic. We had great service during both visits. I also love how respectful the ownership is of the cats and their ability to come and go as they please. There are descriptions of each cat and their dispositions. I think this place is utterly charming and will make it our regular stop on our walks.

Beautiful morning at Catzen! So cozy. My lavender oat milk latte was delicious and the barista was very friendly. SUCH a cute place. I <3 cats and coffee

Yelp
Oh Meow Goodness!!!! Catzen is a cat lovers dream cafe! Cozy cat theme decor, with over ten cats and lil cat personality cards to learn about each of their quirks :) my husband and I ordered the pumpkin chai latte and matcha latte and both were deliciously creamy. The cost to get into the room after reservation is just the cost of one item on the menu. PRO TIP: if you'd like cats to come through, be chill! When we first came in, a group of six were a bit loud playing board games. The cats stayed in their private den in the basement. Once the group left, within ten minutes multiple cats came up and one even sat on my lap :') I will most definitely be back. There is ample street parking. I recommend groups no larger than 4!

Yelp
Absolutely adore this cozy little place to grab a coffee and a treat, without needing to pay extra for entry (but reservations to be with the kitties are required). This spot offers comfort for kitties and humans alike, with a warm fireplace and comfy chairs. Books are available for reading if you forgot your own, and I fully plan on bringing some knitting projects with me when I go back. The kitties aren't for adoption, as this is their home. The service at the counter is great and the coffee I got kept me fueled throughout the day!

Yelp
Came for the Art-o-mat machine, stayed for the cats and coffee. What a FANTASTIC welcome to the city! I could stay here all day, enjoying the coffee, petting the cats, soaking in the cool jazzy velvet vibes. Can't believe it's only been here for less than a year- it has such a lived in and local feel to it. Decaf flat white (no heavy cream, that's a bummer) but it was frothy and strong. 100% this would be our local haunt if we lived in MSP.

Yelp
Let's get straight into it: 1. Free 45-minute sessions with a purchase! 2. Walk-ins are welcomed if there's room, but best to make a reservation if you're unsure. Parties of 5+ will need to make a $5 deposit per person to reserve. 3. Drinks are typical local cafe pricing (lattes $6-8 depending on size and alterations) *see pics* 4. All cats are house cats and not adoptable 5. Important if you're bringing kids: -AGES 15+ are allowed at any time. -AGES 10-14 are allowed with an adult on Wednesday evenings 7-9 pm, and all Saturday and Sunday. -AGES 0-9 are only allowed Saturday mornings during Cats & Cartoons, 7am-9am Other info: Cats have an exit into a private basement space, so they can come and go. There's also plenty of toys if/when they're feeling playful.

Yelp
Unique cat cafe located in St Paul off of Grand! We came for the main attraction (seeing the cats) and were happy with the experience overall. Coffee was good! (Well, I actually got a Chai latte, but still very good.) It was also fun to sit with the cats and try to coax them out of hiding or come say hi. Most were sleeping. :-) The only somewhat disappointing piece was the time frame of the reservation (45 minutes). It goes by fast!

Yelp
This is a lovely place to have some coffee and see some cute cats. The cat den is such a cool space - comfy seating areas, books, a fireplace, games, and, of course, cats with lots of places for them to hang out, scratch, and sleep. The cats are able to freely come and go with their "Dramatic Exit" door to their basement lair, when they don't feel like socializing. The service at the cafe was super friendly and helpful. My brown butter pear latte was delicious and they can make any of their lattes decaf, if you like. Tasty donuts, too.
google avatar

Yelp
The best ambience for cat lovers! So many cute cats and really good coffee and snacks. I ordered a calzone which was very delicious. Sitting with the cats and sipping coffee was so fun! The hot chocolate was really good too!
google avatar

Tara L.

Yelp
I didn't know what to expect but it's cute inside but small for normal seating (because part is sectioned off for the cat area). Service was overall good. Latte was pretty but it was very bitter which isn't my preference. Cool concept but you need to plan ahead and reserve a spot for the cat area. They were sleeping the entire time we were there so low activity.
google avatar

Yelp
Don't "paws" () on making a trip here. We made a reservation for the cat den and check in ran smoothly. Ordered our "cat-puccinos" (see what I did there?) and found a comfy seat in the den. Other people were already entertaining one of the 3 cats-the other two were asleep. I mean...they're cats so. The coffee is OUTSTANDING. I'll be back for take out coffee for sure. Don't really need to revisit the cat den. Also they give you a 5 min heads up when your 45 min. limit is up.

Yelp
This is a fun idea, but expect to pay a lot for your drinks and wait a while for them to come up. If you have reservations for the living room, be sure to order drinks well in advance of your reservation as there will be a line. The living room is crowded and hard to navigate. The staff is friendly and the chai latte I had was good. If I had no other way to interact with cats this might be worth it. Love the art!
google avatar

Christina K.

Yelp
This cafe is so cute with cat deco throughout. Sitting in the living room with the cats was super enjoyable- reserve a time and you can be on the room for 45 minutes. They don't charge a separate fee to sit with the cats your drink purchase gets you on. The coffee menu was unique. I enjoyed the cherry mint mocktail. After 4pm they have a mocktail and charcuterie board option. Parking is on the street, but plenty of space.
google avatar

Yelp
Very cozy place! Cats are people friendly and unbothered. I got Golden Tumeric Chai Latte and would highly recommend for those who want an alternative to coffee.
google avatar

Yelp
This adorable cat cafe made me happy. It's an interesting experience. Front room is a standard coffee shop. You can sign up for a free hour in the "cat room" and bring your beverage inside to enjoy while petting (or attempting to pet) cats. Personally, I liked the unique experience but wondered if the cats liked it or not.

Yelp
I stopped by Catzen during Grand Old Day, after having driven past many times. I was super excited to see that their special was a peach flavored latte & ordered that. The staff were super kind, despite the huge rush of people, & the wait was pretty short (even after someone stole my drink & they had to remake it). The shop itself is super cute; the cat room was closed for the day, but I'll definitely be back to pet those babies!

Yelp
My favorite thing about Catzen (besides the cats, of course) was the decor - there is so much fun cat-themed art everywhere and the environment is just so fun and whimsical! Making a reservation was easy and I appreciated that the ambiance in the living room was very relaxed - 4 of the cats came out to visit while I was there. The pour over coffee was pretty standard, I'd like to go back to try the mocktails sometime. It does seem to get a little busy right before living room reservations start since everyone is asked to purchase a beverage/food item before visiting with the cats, so I'd recommend getting there a little early if you have a reservation.
google avatar

Brad W.

Yelp
Wife and I reserved a Sunday morning time slot with the cats. They are free to come and go as they like from the living room so only two were present when we were there. Big Joe was lounging most of the time but Holly was super playful! The coffee and pastries were good and the staff were friendly. We will be back and I'm glad they do reservations so it's not too busy in the living room. It's comfy and a nice spot to spend your morning.
google avatar

Melissa C.

Yelp
My husband and I braved the cold and crowd to go on opening day. We cannot wait to go back. The resident cats (8 total) are so friendly and playful. This place is super popular so you do need to book a reservation window on weekends but it is free. The coffee drinks we got were delicious! We got the Big Joe Latte and the Catzen Latte. Both were good sized and super tasty. It was so fun to drink our drinks in the "Living Room" with the cats. The staff did a great job keeping up with the crowd and even though the line was down the block we feel like it was well organized.

Yelp
My first cat cafe! I love cats and I love cafes so I don't know what took me this long. This one is brand new, and its newness might color this review so if you're reading this way in the future (from January 2025), bear that in mind. The relevance of that caveat is that they're so busy in these opening weeks that there are lines and reservation times to get into the cat room. I'm not sure how that reservation system works - for my second visit, I was early enough in the morning that I was able to get in there normally. (Update: use Resy to reserve a time.) Solid cafe fare is available from what I can tell so far. The two lattes I've gotten were tasty and had unique style. They also have some baked goods, I see on their website that they roll out charcuterie and mocktails starting at 4pm. I will definitely return to try that stuff. The main thing here is the "Den", which is the cordoned-off room where the cats are. Lots of perches and toys and hidey holes for cats and it really feels like a homey living room. But they have to mete out spots in there, and even when you're in there you might not get to pet a kitty because them's the breaks. I brought a laptop and did some work and it was cozy although there wasn't anyplace nearby where I could plug my laptop in. Oh, and they have a neater water dispenser than I usually see! It is a fancy thing for drinking water! I like it. And in a particularly creative touch, they converted an old cigarette vending machine into one that dispenses local art! So yeah, I will definitely be coming back here, and I'd recommend you try it out, maybe at a non-peak time in these early months.

Yelp
Lovely ambiance n Lovely cats n Lovely staff! All the feels! Will definitely revisit!!

Yelp
Love this place. So cozy! Great spot for relax and focus work. I was in a heart-break situation when I was here. I feel cured by the music, the comfy seating, the cats, the coffee and the chocolate croissant. The staffs are friendly as well. I didn't even want to leave at the end.

Yelp
What a lovely cafe experience! Got a chance to go shortly after opening day. Their business model is evolving to best support the cats and customer's experience in interacting with them- check the website/social media for updates. The coffee was fantastic! Lots of unique flavors I haven't seen elsewhere like sassafras (suggestion to business owner would be to update the menu for the Catzen and Big Joe lattes to include their flavors). I will definitely be back for more cat and coffee love! :)
google avatar

Yelp
Friendly staff, delicious coffee, even better banana bread. Cat den is great (you need reservations) and when Tim the cat made an appearance people exclaiming "Tim!" was fun. The cats have a downstairs zone, which is nice, but can also lead to a situation where you are in a cat (singular) cafe rather than a cat (multiple) cafe. If your expectations are set appropriately, then all good. I'd come back for the coffee alone.

Allison K.

Yelp
Loved my brown butter latte! The cat den wasn't busy, so I was able to go in without a reservation. It was morning, so ~5 cats were out and about--so sweet! Of course they're cats, so they do what they want... two were willing to play and be petted, while several more just strolled around on their own terms.
google avatar

Angela K.

Yelp
We love this cat happy coffee shop! Fun flavored lattes and be sure to make reservation to go into the living room to watch the cats! Just respect their space!
google avatar

Charley B.

Yelp
Cute cat cafe!! You're supposed to get a reservation to go into the room with the cats, however, they were very accepting of walk-ins. The cafe is separate from the room with the cats - you get 45 minutes for the cat room and you can take your coffee/food in. The cats come and go from the room - they have a way to go to their own space away from the room if they need - they are all very chill and sweet. The room is so calm with couches, a fireplace, books, etc. The coffee itself is good, and the workers are super sweet. Spaces to sit and work outside of the cat room as well.
google avatar

Theresa H.

Yelp
So fun! Great beverage options and a nice low key spot to interact with beautiful cats.
google avatar

Yelp
Visited Catzen Coffee on opening day, and it was crazy busy/popular. While people were waiting in line, the staff members were talking with customers, handing out cat swag, and offering samples of hot cider and sandwiches (part of celebrating their grand opening!). Their entire team was professional, kind, and efficient. They sold super cute merchandise inside (tumblers, mugs, tshirts, hats, etc.) and customers were able to spend some time in the Den (with the cats!) after ordering drinks. I had a matcha latte, which was great. I also noticed they serve Dogwood Coffee, which I already know I love. The cats were playful and seemed to enjoy interacting with the guests. I would love to come back when there are less people.
google avatar

Tim R.

Yelp
I would not get your hopes up as far as the cats getting super friendly with you but ambience is nice, in the cat room, and the drinks are good: I got the Fig and Walnut Latte: very subtle walnut and fig flavor which was perfect. The staff may bark at you, "The dirty cups go there!!", and there were two old guys, unrelated to each other, yelling about this or that but overall, a cool enough experience.

Gdryv633 ..

Yelp
Totally love this cozy and peaceful cafe full of cats. The owner clearly has curated beautifully every inch of the shop, and has planned a very safe and lovely life for the cats, The cats are friendly and well-acclimated to visitors. The reservation system works really well to ensure an excellent experience for customers and cats. The coffee is delicious and there are thoughtful and tasty seasonal offerings. I wish they'd offer treats from Hot Hands Pies which is nearby--the cinnamon roll and chocolate shortbread cookies and vanilla pie would be good for starters. Catzen is already perfect anyway, though!
google avatar

Ishika J.

Yelp
Fun place but unfortunately I was unable to see any of the cats besides one during my appointment slot. I came here hoping to see cats so this was a bit disheartening. The coffee I had was nice overall.
google avatar

KellyAna F.

Yelp
Very cute on the inside, they even have personalized art of all of their cats which I thought was adorable. The cat room is cozy and the cats are very friendly, especially Big Joe who loved getting his chin scratched. There was a wait to enter the cat room, but nothing crazy! The hand pie I got was really good also! It's definitely worth a visit :)
google avatar

Andrea S.

Yelp
What a delightful addition to the Grand Ave retail scene. Catzen is the perfect neighborhood spot: great coffee drinks and baked goods, a soothing vibe, and CATS! Highly recommended.

Heidi M.

Yelp
Great coffee, friendly staff, and adorable cats! I love this place! Before you go, know that the number of cats you'll see will vary since they have the ability to go to the basement/away from people. While I'm always a little sad on the days I don't see many, I really appreciate that they have the ability to retreat.

When D.

Yelp
The butter pear latte was good. My husband was not crazy about the tamarind soda. Generous portion of a tasty banana bread. The person at the counter was helpful when asked for a recommendation. The ambiance was lovely but apparently we got there at nap time so only 1 kitty was up for petting. The place is cute and clean.
google avatar

Maddison C.

Yelp
The service was amazing accompanied by food such as strong cappuccinos, earth matcha, and pastries galore. If you want to visit/pet the cats you must a reservation (which is free)! Colorful ambience and lots of space to unwind with kittens!
google avatar

Yelp
A real joy to find this gem during my visit to the Cities! Apparently just opened but seems to be running smoothly already; plenty busy but drinks came quickly and *so good*!! Plus did I mention THEY HAVE CATS??? I mean come ON that's almost not fair.

Jenn S.

Yelp
I was in yesterday morning for a medium, black coffee, with a shot of espresso. 12oz. cup. The total was $6.04. Today I received an email saying my NEW total is $8.04. No way in hell I am paying another dime. If they made a mistake, that's on them! The coffee wasn't even good, and they were not friendly. I don't see how that is legal AT ALL. I won't be going back. Sad because I wanted to look into the cat room. They can forget about getting another dime from me!

William H.

Yelp
Had a great experience at Catzen Coffee. Went for the cats and got to watch some WWF-class kitten wrestling. Was blown away by the coffee. Will definitely be going back. Even if you don't like cats, it's worth stopping for the coffee.

Amy S.

Yelp
Things to be aware of before going: you need an appointment on weekends to go into the cat den. It's less busy during the week but a res is still recommended. You will have to find parking on the street away from the cafe, no parking lot. The cat den is filled with people, almost uncomfortably so, and they're all vying for cat attention. This means you may not actually get your own cat attention. There is some seating off to the side of the cat den so you could still watch if you don't have an appointment or there's no room to sit in the den. Your drinks will take a while, they seem to have one espresso machine. The Big Joe latte is delicious. I would come back for the beverages, they are worth the wait.

Carol M.

Yelp
It's a fun place. Fantastic Mid-Century decor. The kitties are enjoyable. Pastries are good. I had a great fig and cheese sandwich. There are not a lot a lot of choices when it comes to luncheon choices but what they is certainly fine.

Jen T.

Yelp
The young man taking coffee orders was very rude to us and he got our orders wrong. I asked for decaf drip coffee. He responded with "a decaf latte?" And I said no a decaf drip coffee. He said "we don't have that and that's why I asked you if you wanted a latte" very rudely. He then asked if I wanted whole milk and I said "skim". He then said they only have whole. Why did he ask? I asked if there were more Sift products and he said "no". Another worker told me they had more Sift in the back. The person taking orders should not be dealing with customers. Again, he was rude, he got our order wrong and he didn't know about the quantity of bakery items. On top of that he was screwing around behind the counter - dancing around, flipping a coin and not focused on his job.
