The 38 Essential Restaurants in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland, New Zealand)

"It would be difficult to find someone in Auckland who doesn’t hold a special place in their heart for Cazador. The second-generation, family-owned Dominion Road haunt, run by Dariush Lolaiy and Rebecca Smidt, has harnessed a special sort of warmth within the rustic space outfitted with taxidermied animal heads. Known for his affinity for meat cookery and for making some of the best charcuterie in town, Lolaiy leans on rich flavors of pan-fried quail hearts and beautifully braised boar to create his uniquely bold offering. If the food wasn’t enough, front-of-house fixture Simon Benoit brings in customers with a thoughtful collection of sherry and effortless service. Hot tip: Cazador Deli, next door, offers some of the best pies in the city. — HE" - Hillary Eaton, Leisha Jones

We enjoyed a lot our dinner at Cazador, the food was excellent, as well as the service. The staff were very friendly and they introduced ingredients and stories of each dish at serving. The interior design is very interesting, created a unique vibe for the dinner. We’d love to go again in the future.

A lovely small cafe with 3 high tables inside and a few outdoor tables. High chair also available. Lovely pastry, sandwiches, and excellent coffee. Flat white's milk was velvety smooth, coffee itself has a good chocolatey taste. At night this cafe (entrance is next door) becomes a restaurant.

I had a fantastic time with friends, and the atmosphere was amazing. Romantic and so chill. I will have another great time with friends there, not so long. Haha. Enjoy the music. The beer meat tastes too wild for me. But the others are good 👍

We visited a few weeks ago and loved it—so we had to come back, and it was just as good the second time (and the third!). The coffee is top-notch—lattes, mochas, and hot chocolates were all delicious. Not too sweet, just really well-balanced. But what really won us over were the pastries and snacks. A lot of what they offer changes with the available ingredients, so there’s always something new to try. One time, we had an incredible strawberry cheesecake tart. They also do the classics really well—croissants, pain au chocolat, cookies, and their Basque cheesecake is unreal! Update: We had a lovely tomato lentil soup here on a recent visit; honestly one of the best soups we’ve ever had! The staff are super friendly and up for a good chat. Mornings can get a bit busy, but it's absolutely worth it.

My birthday dinner was so well celebrated at Cazador! We had the food from the chef menu putting together the best dishes! I’m a happy birthday gal. Must visit again!!! Kudos to my hubby who brought me here first time! Love him so much 🥰

Cadzador is an absolute gem. My friend and I started with the Persian Princess cocktails—delightfully balanced and a perfect opener. The snacks, entrées, mains, and cheese course flowed generously, each dish beautifully presented and delicious. The standout was definitely the venison: incredibly tender and packed with flavour. We finished with what might be the best chocolate mousse in Auckland—light, rich, unforgettable. The service was warm, attentive, and genuinely elevated the experience. Don’t miss enjoying a drink in the charming courtyard out back—it’s the perfect way to round out an exceptional evening.

The food here is amazing. The menu is curated well and each dish is prepared with care. We had a wonderful server who took the time to explain each dish. A wonderful experience :)

We picked Cazador because they had the “feast” or chefs choice menu option and it did not disappoint. Sometimes you have to step outside your comfort zone and try things that you wouldn’t normally pick. we trusted the process and we even trusted them to pick our drinks. This family run business since 1987! Had sensational food, fantastic service and a relaxed vibe. We left feeling very satisfied.
