Are These London Restaurants Worth The Hype?

"The Verdict: A standing-only Soho taqueria with the consistency of a ‘U Up’ text sender.  This little takeaway joint bears an uncanny resemblance to international taco pilgrimage restaurants Taquería Orinoco and Los Tacos No. 1. We’ve had good times here (inhaling a perfect, crispy-skin chicharron quesadilla while hypnotised by the glistening, rotating trompo), and we’ve had bad times here (a razor-thin tortilla weeping pineapple pieces). Go for lunch if you’re in the area and as there isn’t any seating, find somewhere nice to perch with your zingy al pastor number. " - sinead cranna, rianne shlebak, jake missing, heidi lauth beasley

The Hit List: New London Restaurants To Try Right Now

"CDMX Tacos in Soho has an aesthetic that is best described as the sweet spot between a Shell garage and a minimalist's vision board. While neither of those things are likely to make you think ‘great tacos’, that’s exactly what you’ll find in this no-seating taqueria. Behind the counter, soft tortillas are handmade and a glistening trompo of steaming pork—complete with a pineapple crown—hypnotically rotates. The tacos are packed full of lemony grilled cactus and lip-sizzling salsa verde, but our favourite is the zingy, tender pork and pineapple al pastor. Go solo whenever you happen to be in Soho, or with anyone who won’t judge you for shamelessly licking salsa roja off your shirt." - jake missing, rianne shlebak, daisy meager, sinead cranna, heidi lauth beasley

The Best Tacos In London

"CDMX Tacos has an aesthetic that is best described as the sweet spot between a Shell garage and a minimalist's vision board. While neither of those things are likely to make you think ‘great tacos’, that’s exactly what you’ll find in this no-seating Soho taqueria. Our pick of the bunch is the crispy, slightly sweet chicharron taco, best paired with a guava Jarritos. Yes, there can be a long wait at peak times and the quality of the tortillas can be hit or miss, but in a city so deprived of good tacos, forgiveness comes easy. " - jake missing, rianne shlebak, daisy meager, sinead cranna

London’s New Restaurant Openings

"This new Soho taco spot looks heavily, ehm, inspired by New York’s Los Tacos No. 1. The straightforward menu has a choice of al pastor, chicharron, asada, and nopal in either a taco or quesadilla.  We checked out CDMX Tacos and added it to the Hit List. " - sinead cranna, rianne shlebak

CDMX Tacos Soho - Review - Soho - London - The Infatuation

"CDMX Tacos has an aesthetic that is best described as the sweet spot between a Shell garage and a minimalist's vision board. While neither of those things are likely to make you think ‘great tacos’, that’s exactly what you’ll find in this no-seating Soho taqueria. Behind the counter, tortillas are handmade and a glistening trompo of steaming pork—complete with a pineapple crown—hypnotically rotates to the glee of hungry co-workers. Our pick of the bunch is the crispy, slightly sweet chicharron taco, best paired with a guava Jarritos. The quality of the tortillas themselves can be hit or miss—sometimes they’re soft and perfect and at other times, chewy or too thin to sufficiently support their superior spicy contents. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Pause Unmute Despite bearing an uncanny resemblance to Mexico City’s Taquería Orinoco (and New York’s Los Tacos No. 1), some telltale signs remain that you’re smack bang in the middle of W1—a certain air of chaos as orders go missing and huffy Londoners who are annoyed by the long wait at peak times. And yet, we’re a city so deprived of good tacos that forgiveness and affection comes easy. Stop by solo or with anyone who won’t judge you for shamelessly licking salsa rojo off your shirt, and take your tacos to Golden Square for a moment where Soho’s chaos mutes to the simplicity of a paper plate and a chilled Modello. Food Rundown Chicharron Quesadilla We’ve got a real soft spot for this quesadilla because the crispiness of the pork’s skin and fried tortilla, combined with the moist pork belly and moisture of the white onions, really is a texture experience. It’s also available as a taco but you should opt for the quesadilla if you’re planning on taking it for a stroll—the fried cheese keeps it in tip-top condition. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Al Pastor Taco On our first visit for lunch, this was our undeniable demand-an-encore headliner. It was zingy, tender, and topped with juicy, generous chunks of pineapple. We’ve also had it circa 7pm and although it certainly still slapped, the pork was a bit drier due to its prolonged period of trompo rotation. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Nopal Taco A guacamole and salsa rojo-forward taco with a subtle, fragrant lemon flavour thanks to the cactus. Avoid adding too much additional salsa or lime juice to this one, as the moisture from the cactus already provides a certain degree of tortilla strain. It doesn’t travel well, so consume it a.s.a.p. Within four minutes (yes, we set a timer), we noticed that the tortilla was saturated and eating it created a mess. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Chips Y Guacamole The tortilla chips here have a great crunch and they avoid that pass-the-water saltiness that a lot of London Mexican restaurants lean into. The guacamole is also a winner but it falls on the chunkier spectrum. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Guava Jarritos A pink sweet soda gift to all who order it. Very underwhelming and uninspired tacos. All the meat is premade and cold. I watched the cook prepare my order behind the counter and saw cold meats being taken out of sad looking steel containers. I have also never had a limp and bland carne asada before (bland beef in Mexican cuisine, seriously?), the beef was cold and flavourless and judging by the colour not seasoned. The tortillas were unremarkable. The salsa flavours and spices were lacking any punch. Service was non-committal. When I complimented the crisp of the al pastor, the people behind the counter didn't seem to care. When I said the asada wasn't that flavourful, the cook just shrugged. The only upside was the al pastor had a nice crisp (the only saving grace to my al pastor), and they sell mexican coca cola.

Not bad Tacos and fast service. Shame the salsas weren't very spicy despite being labelled as hot, would have certainly improved the food. Counters could have done with a wipe down, fairly dirty despite it being quiet there.

Real Mexican tacos and the cactus flavour is definitely worth a try. The salsa and limes are self-serve.

Google
Tacos were quite good the meat for the pastor was definite the highlight but I’d say the service staff that’s present between 14:00 and 15:00 might need a little lesson on customer service. The nopal tacos weren’t available and basically I had to ask 3 different times to get a proper answer if they were available or not. Chips and guacamole weren’t available while the tacos I had ordered actually had guac on them. So either this was the end of her shift and she was tired or it was her last day but come on. Besides all that great tacos

By far the best taqueria in London! 🌮 If you’re craving authentic Mexican food or missing home, this is the spot. Fresh tortillas with real flavour, spicy salsas, and the pastor and chicharrón are outstanding (with vegan options too!). You eat standing up, just like in a real Mexican taqueria, and the food comes out very fast. For an extra flavour kick, try them with cheese. They also have a great selection of drinks, including Mexican Coke, made with cane sugar — it really hits different! You’ll love this place.

Hands down the best Al pastor I've ever had. Meat was freshly cooked, hot, juicy, flavourful, with charred caramelised bits. Everything you want. Carne asada was also worthy of being ordered. Chicharron had potential but meat was cold. Beer was not ice cold. I would recommend and come back for the al pastor 100%.

I had high expectations based on some of these reviews but honestly just wasted my time and money. For the price of these tacos I did expect more, they are quite small for what you get but the main issue was that it had no flavour or taste at all… I had the asada tacos, don’t waste your time.

Google
absolutely disgusting. we ordered 4x of the beef tacos, which was a mistake. they were out of the pork tacos and had no cheese left either. the tacos came cold and stale. you can tell it’s just been sitting there the whole day. not fresh in the slightest. i know london is expensive, but £4.25 for ONE taco is wild. i ended up paying £17 in total for 4 DEAD tacos. what makes it worse is the beef was so chewy, it was actually nasty. also lacked any sort of flavour. the only saving grace was the lime. even the salsa they provided didn’t add anything to the dish. furthermore, i don’t appreciate the salsa that’s just sitting out in the open. i understand it’s self-service when it comes to the sauce, but it’s still unsanitary. the walls and counters where you eat were also dirty and the bin was full. it was just an unpleasant experience. would not recommend at all. i don’t understand the hype, and i wish i saved my time and money and went elsewhere.
