21 Getaway Restaurants to Try in the LA Mountains This Summer

"Those looking for small town diner vibes will find terrific seared burgers, fries, and ice cream shakes at this retro-style malt shop in Cedar Glen. Located just a short drive from Lake Arrowhead, Cedar Glen Malt Shop has all the 50s kitsch and friendly service one would expect from a Johnny Rocket’s or Ruby’s, but with more indie charm. — Matthew Kang, lead editor" - Eater Staff

I love old school places. Each burger is named after a car, it's interesting. The burgers themselves are very tasty (I forgot to make photo). I really liked the milkshake. But the fries were not tasty and not fresh. Everything else was great. Prices okay.

The Ponderosa Running Springs

Google
Delicious burger. Fries & onion rings were good too. First order of fries were not right. They were replaced without a grudge. Mostly locals were Dining here since it's not on the main road but not too far from Lake arrowhead. We will be back. The malts and Sundays were tempting.

Google
We went to Cedar Glen Malt Shop on Mothers Day, same as Last year. We love their hamburgers and shakes. We ordered our food and took it down the road and had a picnic underneath the pine trees. The hamburgers are named after vintage cars. The hamburgers, fries and milkshakes are great. The decor is in the 50s, the restaurant is clean and the staff is very friendly. We will be back next year on Mother’s Day again.

Google
This is an updated review. I went about 9 months ago and had a great experience and good food. I recently took my children and husband, we did not have the same experience. The service wasn’t good. I understand prices have gone up but this was over priced and my burger was raw. Completely undercooked. I should’ve cut it in half to check it but a few bites in and it was raw, undercooked. I couldn’t eat it. I usually get a veggie burger and never have a problem but decided to get a burger this time. It was completely raw in the middle. Fries were all different types of fries which I’ve never seen here. They usually have yummy kind of thin crunchy fries. The only thing that was good was the malts but we got 3 of those and 2 shakes and that was $40. We also got 2 burgers and a BLT. The total was $90. With a $10 tip. Unfortunately as a local who has been going here for 20 years I will probably never come back. How is McDonald’s cheaper than this place? And if you want people to eat here at least taste better than fast food yeah?

Google
This was my first time here. The Cadillac Coup DeVille (Bacon Cheeseburger), Fries, and the Chocolate Malt were all so delicious! The staff are wonderful and helpful! It’s very clean. I will definitely be coming back!!

Google
Excellent small town malt n burger shop service has always be at bargain basement prices. I recommend peanut butter burger and chocolate milk shake along with a fountain cherry coke. Free refills so I get the fountain coke upon being seated

Google
This place is AMAZING! The staff are so friendly and the food is incredible! Service is speedy, prices are super reasonable for the quality and quantity of food. I am a long distance backpacker, had been on trail for a while and was so ready for a burger. I had a bacon cheeseburger, fries, onion rings, and a mocha malt. They were everything I hoped for and more. The atmosphere is great too. It's a cute, classic sort of American diner. I 100% recommend! You can't come to Cedar Glen and not stop here!

Yelp
If you're looking for an awesome burger in the area, this is the place to go! I love the blast from the past malt shop vibe and the service is always incredible. I had the low rider with onion rings and it was amazing. We also ordered a kid's meal for our son and it came in a little cardboard Cadillac. He went crazy for it! Love this local gem and will keep coming back.

Yelp
After a long play at the park it was time for an energy boost and sugar rush! A quick yelp search and cedar glen malt shop popped up. A classic old school style place it was part grill part ice cream shop. It carried classic fifties vibes with the decor and options from burgers and fries paired with a malt or banana split was perfect. The place was small and popping but with a group of 8 we were able to sit quick and order up. The malts were served in glass cups with the stainless mixer cups on the side with the extra ice cream. We did share an order of French fries and they were some of the best fries ever, hand cut, double fried with the perfect texture! The burgers coming off the grill was drool worthy so we will be making a trip again for a full meal!

Yelp
I was in the area and stopped by for a late lunch with a couple of friends. Wonderful food with quick and great service. Can't ask for more.

Yelp
This place has really great burger and fries. Also love their milk shakes. We try to stop by every time we are in the area

Yelp
Let's start this review off with an important aspect of burgers and shakes.... A burger and a shake means a moment of uninterrupted peace. And inner peace is what will be instilled within you after experiencing the heavenly bliss of what they call "Cedar Glen Malt Shop". This place is truly a hidden diamond in the rough. Tucked in a quaint town just minutes away from Lake Arrowhead, this blast from the past is a Must Try for all you malt and shake enthusiasts. The portions are huge, the food is fresh, and the flavors are iconic. I can't believe it took me literally this long to find this place. I highly recommend you all getting here ASAP!

Yelp
It's so tiny but delicious...burgers, massive malts. Servers were very good at accommodating our party of 8. Cute decor.

Frank M.

Yelp
Fantastic burger, 60' decor a must to go. The malts over the top and the people Kind friendly and don't forget the fries. The location beautiful Lake Arrowhead ca Worth the drive.
google avatar

Bonnie S.

Yelp
Has a diner feel and very cute decor. Only ordered dessert but found this place to have very reasonable prices and lots of diner food choices. There was plenty of seating, service was good and fast. The malts and sundaes were delicious and really hit the spot.

Yelp
Absolute charmer. Nice old-car route-66-era ambience, with old movie posters and dishes named after classic cars. Even without having had their signature dishes, the food is quite good - bottomless sodas, perfectly-sweetened brioche on the veggie burger, with ridiculous amounts of every kind of fixin you could hope for; small but well-made turkey sando, with tons of french fries made of actual potatoes instead of the garbage you'd get at most diners.

Yelp
This was on every "Things to do in Lake Arrowhead," so I stopped in. I had my dog with me, so we only got food to go. The servers at the counter were really nice and I love the retro decor inside! However, the food was not the best; the shakes and malts were good, but not anything super special in my opinion. The fries were also a bit disappointing :( but maybe the food is better when it's not to-go! Really cute spot to check out if you have the time though!

Yelp
We were up here in the area because of an open house showing. When we got hungry, this place showed up near us, so we decided to try it. The hand formed (patties) burgers are great. I haven't seen this type of burger joint since smash burgers, and this is in Big Bear near Lake Arrowhead mine, you. Their burgers are very tasty and seasoned well. I tried one of their famous malts too, a peanut butter, which they're named for. Anyway, I love the burgers and the malts. I was pleasantly surprised and it was delicious. Enjoy!

Yelp
Cedar Glen Malt Shop at Lake Arrowhead is a culinary delight for burger enthusiasts. The welcoming staff enhances the overall experience, making it worth the drive. The menu's creativity shines through with burgers named after vehicles, each delivering a perfect balance of greasy goodness and delicious flavors. A must-visit for those seeking a memorable dining adventure.

Yelp
Incredible portion sizes and great ambiance. A little place tucked into Lake Arrowhead that serves up excellent food and great service. The pastrami sandwich was great and we were able to upgrade to chili fries. All their burger sizes are very large with lots of fries should you get that.
google avatar

Carlos J.

Yelp
The food is great and so is the service. I won't say the ambiance is the best but it's fine. I really recommend this place if you're going with family or a friend

Grace H.

Yelp
I went on 3/23, food was delicious. No one was inside because it was snowing outside. Service was fast and quick. Wonderful place for food. Shakes were wonderful.

Yelp
This year and last year our family had lunch at Cedar Glen Malt Shop. We decided to take our lunch and eat it under some pine trees. It was Mothers Day and the weather was perfect. We all had hamburgers and fries. There are different burgers named after old vintage cars. The regular size hamburger was plenty for us. The double is large, hard to open your mouth wide enough to take a bite. We also had their milk shakes which were great. The decor inside is done in the 50's. It a small place and clean, friendly staff. It's not on a main road that you would see. It's a locals place and now a place we will keep coming to.

Lucy B.

Yelp
Great food and great customer service. Love the diner feel! Their kids meals come in a cool little car box lol Aside from that, the kids food is really good. If your kiddos like chicken nuggies like ours, they'll gobble these up. Even the picky ones. I highly recommend.
google avatar

Bob M.

Yelp
A local classic. Food and of course ice cream and shakes. Big portions. Kind of out of the way so rarely crowded.
google avatar

Kailey E.

Yelp
Best Malts and burgers on the mountain! Nice service and fun place to hang out and have a bite.

Pam L.

Yelp
Excellent food, excellent customer service!! Classic car motif. Highly recommend. Extra thick shakes

Yelp
Let's start with the obvious when you arrive. Parking when we arrived at 12 pm was scarce. If you drive too quickly, you will pass this place. We got lucky, and someone was leaving. So we rook that spot. Seating inside is limited. Aside from that, it is a pleasant experience. They have older car hop music playing at a low level to not interrupt your conversation. Order was taken quickly, and within 10 ton15 minutes, the chicken salad, stingray burger, and rocky road shake arrived. Fries piping hot and crispy, burger juicy and tall. You are going to have to smash that burger and slightly unhinge your jaw to get a bite. The shake comes in a glass as well as the metal glass it was mixed in. The shake was amazing. The salad was good. It's a burger place, so don't have high expectations. Stick with ordering a burger that comes with Fries and adding a shake. You will not be disappointed. Worth the trip and worth the hassle of parking and trying to get back out. Take your time and check both ways a few times before you back out. Traffic can really be moving at times.

Yelp
Small hole in the wall diner. We just came for their ice cream. Service can be slow, but staff is friendly. Ice cream sundaes are good portions. I modified mine and requested for a small banana split, basically adding a banana for the same price, but with one scoop of ice cream rather than two. They were kind enough to do that :)
google avatar

Karen N.

Yelp
Went here and had a delicious burger and malt, of course, cuz it's in the name and let me tell you they are allll good!! Have been going here for years and the vibe is still the same....Friendly staff & good food. Such good memories and a great place to stop in for a bite to eat. Heads up, there are only a few spots to park

Stella M.

Yelp
Last couple of times we went it was just plain horrible. Burgers dried out, fries cold and quite frankly the service has never been anything to write home about. Perhaps utensils are a good idea when food is served? You always have to ask and/or get up to ask. Took my kids and grandson for a late lunch after a long ski day so we were really hungry but it didn't matter how hungry we were. None of us, including my 12 grandson, ate our food. $90 for 4 burgers yeah like nah no more.

Andrea E.

Yelp
So glad we chose this place for dinner! It has been around since the '40s and we loved the retro diner vibe. Started out with a chocolate malt shake, loved that they brought us the metal cup it was made in with the excess that didn't fit in the glass cup! Honestly wasn't expecting the food to be so incredible, but everything about my burger was perfect. Meat was juicy and flavorful, the lettuce, onion and tomato were fresh- the house made fries were perfectly fries and crispy. My youngest got a kids meal, was a great deal and she loved that it was served in a paper car. My oldest ordered the chili cheese fries and pastrami sandwich and everyone at the table wanted to steal her fries. Next time will order them for myself! This place has really great chili! The service was good, staff were friendly and attentive. Will be back, and recommend this place to everyone I know that makes the trip to Arrowhead!

Yelp
We decided to drive up on Labor Day, my family wanted a good Shake, so we did the 48 minute drive up to the mountains. This place was worth the drive, I got the Stingray, which is a Cheeseburger, it was delicious and I loved the fries, we all thought the Shakes were delicious, I wanted a Banana Split, the main reason I went. I have to say it was one of the best Banana Split's I have had. The only complaint is, the place is pretty small, and seems to be always packed. The Two servers were not the friendliest for some reason?? Maybe because we were a party of 8?? They seemed friendly to other customers, when I went up to pay, I didn't get a smile or even a Thank You from the young lady.. Sad because this place is really charming, But I'm definitely going to go back again, I highly recommend it!

Brigitt M.

Yelp
Small little 50's diner in Cedar Glen. No frills type of place. Service was ok we sat in back by the bathrooms. A bit slow but we thought all for good reason. The burgers had a different taste to them? What is in it ? Tasted off, or bad or just not good mix or flavor of meat. The chili was watered down and does not taste like chili. The fries, onion rings and shakes are decent. Not recommending but it is less expensive than a burger you would get in the village . You get what you pay for . Always. Pass .

m g.

Yelp
Cute 50 decor diner not too far from Lake Arrowhead. Very friendly staff and generous size mushroom with Swiss burger and upgraded onion rings.
google avatar

Karyn J.

Yelp
Cute little restaurant featuring burgers and shakes. Parking is limited. Food came out quickly and made to order.
google avatar

Martin D.

Yelp
They are known for their malts, however it did not taste much out of the ordinary. Their French fries are fresh cut potatoes and were delicious! Just from the fries alone I can tell the quality of food and ingredients is fresh. This is a great diner to sit down and enjoy a meal.
google avatar

Ian P.

Yelp
For sure best malts/shakes in town. Burgers are really good. The only down side to this place is the parking but welcome to the mountain .
google avatar

Sarah K.

Yelp
We were craving some classic burgers and found this great little place. The burgers were spot on, fries were good, service was great. My husband had the Hudson Hornet (mushroom and Swiss) and I had the Edsel (blue cheese and bacon). Definitely worth stopping by for a bite!
google avatar

Jim B.

Yelp
Good food served 50s style. Juke box playing. Family atmosphere. Friendly staff. Not downer for me is it's served in a basket and I prefer a plate at this point.
google avatar

Maddy D.

Yelp
Food was ok, shakes ok. But the reason I won't go back was not a single smile from any of the staff there and we were only 1 of 2 tables there...definitely need to increase staff friendliness.

Adrian C.

Yelp
This spot is a highlight of lake arrowhead for us. It's so good and the service is great. Everyone is very friendly. Food was filling and delicious. And the shop was nice and cute. Will be coming back. Thank you guys
google avatar

Esther D.

Yelp
This is an old school style diner with kitschy 50's decor and legit good food. Huge burgers that were delicious and seriously good malts and shakes. Fries were good too.
google avatar

Irene Q.

Yelp
Came here for my family to try malt shakes for the first time. They loved it! Happy to have a place like this in the mountains.
google avatar

Michael D.

Yelp
Whoah!! Big fat juicy burgers, perfect fries, and ridiculous milkshakes!! If your up in the mountains and want a fantastic meal, drive here immediately. Friendly service, spacious booths, and a great 1950s old route66 vibe. After a great day on the lake the Cedar Glen Malt Shop was the perfect place to stop. Burgers, fries, shakes, and fresh mountain air!! I love this place!!

Joana B.

Yelp
Great burger and very filling. The fries were also very delicious. The milkshakes were tasty and the service was really fast. The waitress was friendly and answered questions
google avatar

Juan B.

Yelp
Will forever be grateful that my favorite burger place is in my hometown, and when I leave it'll be why I miss most! I am a fiend for burgers, and have had burgers from Tijuana to New York and many places in between. However, nothing has ever compare to the burgers here. The meat is very well seasoned and the cheese and bacon compliment the flavor very well. I've been coming here since I was a child and they have NEVER been a miss. Service and food always the best. If you're in the area and you are a burger connoisseur like myself, you MUST try the malt shop!

Michael F.

Yelp
Lots of flavors of Malts and shakes. But, not nearly enough malt powder. I shouldn't have to order extra malt powder to get the malt flavor.
google avatar

David D.

Yelp
Hmmm..! Where do I start? Smaller than anticipated, however, the service was overall good, I had their Cadillac burger which surprisingly was very good, fries were on the overcooked side for my taste; the banana split in the other hand was satisfying, I think I'll wait till summer to do it again to see what kind of crowd frequent this little shop.
google avatar

CJ S.

Yelp
Best place for burgers on the mountain by far.. and the shakes are the best.. i always get a chocolate malt with extra malt.. so good!
google avatar

John V.

Yelp
The Cedar Glen Malt Shop never disappoints. It's one of my favorite local hang-outs in Cedar Glen. You'll get a very casual atmosphere and good service. Go here if you're looking for a local experience away from the tourist restaurants in the big village.
google avatar

Tiffiny H.

Yelp
I grew up on this mountain and every now and again, I make the drive up to see how things are. This time around I went to the Malt Shop! When I was a kid it was called Happy Face Malt Shop and I don't know why there was a name change. Anywho, they are still serving up great burgers and malts! I got the Cadillac Coupe De Ville (bacon cheeseburger) and a peanut butter malt. You get a ton of food! I focused on the burger and the malt. There is no way I could have eaten all of it. I took half of my burger and all of the fries home. Very pleased with everything I got and it brought back memories of my childhood and visiting the malt shop with my gramps. Highly recommend!!
google avatar

Ava B.

Yelp
The taste is amazing! The service is good , everyone is so nice and kind! They also gave us our extra shakes!!! I was so exciting for me! It was like we had 2 shakes and we couldn't finish it all :) so nice!
google avatar

Anabel B.

Yelp
Great food! Burgers can feed two, so be ready! The service was nice. Friendly staff. It's a 50's ambiance and is really nice to eat in. Definitely coming back!
google avatar

Connie S.

Yelp
Just the sundaes and milkshakes are worth the trip. You can sit in the 1950's vibe restaurant or take it to go. There are 16 burger combinations to chose from, each is very different from a classic Chevy to a low rider burger.
google avatar

Debbie M.

Yelp
Great little hole in the wall when up in the mountains. The staff are fast and friendly. Love the way the burgers are named after vintage cars. The burgers onion rings and ice cream where sooooo good the double cheeseburger was huge. We will be back again when in town.
google avatar

S D.

Yelp
The best!!!!!! So glad we ran into the amazing heli-firefighters today and they recommended this place while we are in town. Fantastic food and shakes! My fam loved their burgers! I got the veggie patty. It was the best one I have ever had!
