The Best Dishes Eater SF Editors Ate This Week: Summer 2023 | Eater SF

"Cedar Market in North Berkeley is a lovely convenience-store-meets-food-counter where the Punjabi samosas under a warming lamp are my go-to: crisp, blistered fried exterior yielding to spiced potato, peas, and onions inside; the green and tamarind sauces are great, but these samosas stand on their own and feel like a caring neighborhood treat." - Eater Staff

Great store, great staff, great selection (beers) - if you have a last minute need hit them up!

Update: no changes and in fact there is quite a bit of trash outside the store that they don’t bother picking up. The outside continues to look junky. I’m really sad about how this market looks and what’s inside. The new owners have made significant changes. I used to buy items here but no longer with its $20 minimum for CCs. The outside looks super junky and there is mold all over their blinds. The inside is packed with all sorts of unhealthy stuff, encouraging an unhealthy lifestyle. If only the owner of Green Leaf Market had bought it.

UPDATE: UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT. A new crew is running the spot, some really cool guys from the Punjab, who are friendly and helpful. My only concern is one of the tattooed guys working there seems a little sneering and mean with the local kids, and myself on occasion, and since they are in our neighborhood, I think he should show a little more respect with people who have been here a while. Other than that, I think they are off to a good start. The quintessential mom and pops neighborhood corner store. The previous owners, some nice Chinese folk, I remember from my childhood, had been there for over 50 years when the new owners bought the store. This is the ideal store when you're in a rush and you need a quick breakfast, coffee, and a newspaper, or it's the end of the day and you need some dinner, a beer, and maybe some Tylenol. They will carry items if you are a regular (I'm not sure if this was a good idea for me since I like Lemonheads) and ask, they recently installed a Peet's coffee service, for quick drive-by's, and a nice selection of wines and beers for the locals. Really nice people own this store.

All of the basic shelf stable items, plus an incredible selection of Indian spices (mix of whole and ground) and dal (lentils). Millennials: GT’s kombucha on tap, hot samosas, and TCHO chocolate. And a UPS pickup/drop off point. You can get all your neighborhood business done here! Spices include but are not limited to: fennel seeds, fenugreek, mustard seeds, green cardamom pods, black cardamom, turmeric, garam masala, curry powder, chili powder... the list goes on and on...

Cedar Market is a charming little corner store that feels like a hidden gem, especially for me and my boyfriend Matthew. Whenever I stay with him, we love taking a late-night stroll to this spot—it’s become one of our favorite evening rituals. The market is perfectly stocked for those spontaneous snack runs. It's the perfect slice of local love. 💕

Google
Still advertises that it's a UPS drop point but it is not as of 2025-09 Owner said he'll fix this within the next month.

Google
I liked it how the employees are very nice. I was looking for pumpkin seeds, so i asked one of the employees for help, and she was so nice to me, she showed me where the packages of pumpkin seeds where and also told me that they have the bulk seeds container has a second option. Oh, and the cashier was also very nice by making a coment about what I was going to buy, saying that it was a very good choice.

Yelp
Cedar Market is an unusual indepedent grocery. it's clean, fully stocked with various niche products that are unrelated: -newman's finest cookies & other artisan pastries -large selection of wines, craft beers, energy drinks, bottled coffee -peet's coffee from a machine -indian grocery section. -pre made indian foods (samosa, etc.) pre-covid. didn't see it. -didn't see pricing, but my beer priced fairly. -artisan breads, chips, snacks, et al. brew: sierra nevada "hop bullet" double ipa, 19.2 oz, 8% (3 ish) -boozy, fab value, didn't know sierra make serious brews. great brew.

Yelp
Please post prices! almost nothing is priced and it's a crap shoot as to what a customer is charged. NOT LEGAL

Yelp
I was cruising up Cedar on a recent Sunday when I spotted this corner market's sign advertising homemade samosas and made a mental note to return. When I walked in, I saw a guy shoveling four (or more?) samosas into a bag. He was enthusiastic about their quality, having obviously tried them before. I grabbed two for myself and ate them at the counter with the green sauce. (Don't miss the green sauce!) They were piping hot, crispy and nicely spiced. in other words, everything one could want in a samosa. I got to chatting with the friendly owner and it turns out that she makes the samosas daily. She said she started out making 15 a day, now she's at 50+ and she tries to keep a fresh supply available throughout the day. She also told me that with advance notice she can prepare large quantities of the samosas for parties. (Who wants to have a samosa party with me?) I'm coming here from now on for my samosa fix.

Yelp
Nice staff. Good drop off for ups packages. Good misc supplies. Beer selection decent but watch out for old / expired beer. Check those dates!

Yelp
Great little corner market for snacks, beer, wine, milk, coffee, etc. They also have samosas! 5 stars

Yelp
Just visited at 8:52 and doors were closed and locked even though the hours here say open until 10.

Lucia H.

Yelp
They allowed this woman with no mask to walk in and get a beer. We were all.in line masked so was the worker. I go there to avoid crowds and I wear a mask. That is not careful towards costumers. It is a small store thwy can do better to gain2$ at the moment they may lose good costumers.

Yelp
I came here yesterday just to buy some liquor and the service was great! Unfortunately, I did not catch the name of the person working yesterday evening. Also, the samosas they had near the register were delicious! I will make sure to come to Cedar Market the next time I am in Berkeley.

Yelp
This is one of the nicer corner stores in Berkeley. I've been here a couple of times; I've always found whatever "Ah crap, I need X" item I need in short order. The beer and wine selection is way above average (and the fridged-booze selection is quite large if you need to bring a six pack or a bottle of white wine to a party).

Terry H.

Yelp
This is a very reliable place, and the staff are warm and welcoming. The store has endured some vandalism, which really broke my heart because these folks are so kind and accepting of our quirky neighborhood. This is the kind of business I really like to support, and encourage my neighbors to do the same!

Yelp
A wonderful hidden treasure for homemade samosas, and also basic groceries, UPS drop-offs and Western Union payments. Best little corner store in Berkeley!

Yelp
I've been going here about twice a month because they are a convenient ups dropoff location- I always felt obligated to buy stuff when I do this so I always spent $30-$80 every visit. Seemed to be a small family business so I was glad to help though they are very pricey for what they have. Went there the other day, dropped off a ups package, bought a bunch of stuff to be nice (that I could get for half the price other places)- I asked if they would mail a letter for me since it was storming out and I couldn't find a mailbox- The guy was rude about it and refused- I won't be back to support a business that couldn't do the smallest favor for me (or at least tell me where the nearest mailbox is- found one a block away)

Yelp
I have seen many people try and make this spot work over the years/ well.. it finally found the right owner! Good job. Always open with great chai tea/ peets coffee and samosas. Let alone the convenience of picking up groceries here and there. Would love to see more Indian food and maybe a little seating near windows. Way to go!!

Yelp
This little corner market has been open, then closed, then open again under new management. I've driven by it maybe 5000 times and never been inside, so today was the day. And HAHA, I get a First to Review on it too! Pretty sparse selection since it's just re-opened recently. Apparently, a previous owner got busted by the ABC, (heresay from El H.) but she's a local, so it's reliable! I bought a bottle of wine, since I really couldn't see much else to buy. If you get a chance, do the guy a favor, drop in and tell him what you'd like him to carry so he can fill up his shelves.

Yelp
Meh, this place is kind of just a corner store. It has all your basics: soda, candy, chips, etc. But I can't figure out why it's located in this residential area of North Berkeley. It's an eye sore and it looks out of place. It's painted like a cloud or something. I mean, come on. This is a classy neighborhood. You could at least try to fit in. Paint the thing brown or something. But perhaps if they did, people would mistake it for another house. After all, why the heck would there be a convenience store here?

Karen L.

Yelp
I had to go to Cedar Market since a UPS driver failed to deliver a package to my house around Christmas. I was alittle annoyed since I was home two days in a row waiting for the package (and it turned out there were two packages, hellllo, UPS) but drove down to this little corner store which was just opening as I got there. This is the corner store of your childhood when Mom sent you down all by yourself since you were a big girl now to get an onion and a cube of butter....big wide clean aisles, a Peet's coffee machine, everything looked good, no moldy smell in the back aisle or icky looking produce. I was pretty impressed but then I spotted the samosa sign by the cash register. Are you kidding me? I love samosas. And yes, I pigged out. And I dragged my older sister with the purple hair there a few days later and we both pigged out. She even went back to special order a bunch of the Punjabi and chicken samosas. Okay, UPS, you didn't do so great on delivering my packages but you turned me on to a wonderful little corner store. Truce. Wish it were a block away from my house but I'd be bigger than a breadbox. Thanks, Cedar Market! We need more corner stores like this!

Yelp
New ownership. Very nice folks. Good place to stop for that quart of milk you need on the way home from BART. And grab a samosa too... yum!

Kate H.

Yelp
This store is greatly improved with the new ownership. They have homemade gingery chai (not presweetened) and they added tables and chairs so you can sit down and have food from their Indian buffet. They also carry organic products. Big asset to the community.

Yelp
Great neighborhood market. It's very convenient when you forget to buy milk, cream or half and half for your morning coffee. The folks that run the market are super friendly. Plus, you can drop off or pick up your UPS packages here.

Kewl K.

Yelp
I've poped in her before for a drink and found it to be okay. Andronico's is up the street so I wouldn't go grocery shopping her per say. It's great if you want to make a quick stop, or need to run in a get an essential thing if you're living in the area.

Yelp
I'm going to give away a little secret. Cedar Market has the best homemade samosas! Just don't take them all.
google avatar

Amber W.

Yelp
I don't know why but I like this store. Its small and nothing fancy but the guy who works here is very nice . I wouldn't recommend grocery shopping here because well its a corner store. But he does have an assortment of everyday necessities that are not past their expiration date.

Albion E.

Yelp
The new owners have extended the hours of operation from early in the morning until 8pm, and they've expanded the wine selection quite a bit. And the hours are much more predictable now. The former owner commuted all the way from Tracy to open at about 11am, and sometimes the place would be closed. Not any more. The hours are now predictable. Also, the former owner was very nice, but the new owners also greet me every time I go in. P.S. Vanessa, the place that "looks like a cloud" is the guitar store three blocks up the street. PSS Orville, I've been in many many times since the new owners took over and all of the new owners/workers are men.
