How to Eat Your Way Through Penang, Malaysia—Asia's Most Exciting Food Destination | Condé Nast Traveler

"A lauded spot where the wait is often long but always worth it for punchy, homey plates—nasi ulam rice, asam pedas fish, and sambal goreng prawn. It’s the kind of meal that lingers in memory as much for the flavors as for the anticipation." - Arati Menon

"Ceki is decorated in a traditional vibe with antique clothing and knick-knacks that tell a story from the past. The extensive menu is chiefly composed of home-cooked style Peranakan cuisine and features interesting dishes that can be hard to find, such as too kwa kean. The high-quality seafood menu features signature dishes such as assam pedas fish and sambal goreng prawns paired with a knockout herbal sauce. With only a few large tables, booking is advisable." - Michelin Inspector

Food taste is acceptable. Price is outrageously high. Nasi ulam is rm28 while the fish becomes rm84. Normal portion for chicken is more than 50. More like "cekik" price in this restaurant.

Best peranakan food in penang!! Initially was quite skeptical as the rating was average, but realised that it was actually because of the price point that people were put off by and not the food itself. Coming from Singapore, this was comparable to Singapores fare of peranakan cuisine as we are used to it being on the higher side. Aside from pricing, the food was excellent. We had the kiam chye ark, lor bak, nyonya chap chye, beef rendang, assam fish. The server also highly recommended the nasi ulam and the sambal goreng (prawns) which did not disappoint at all. All the dishes we tried tasted very authentic and each dish's flavour were all complex, could really tell each dish took hours to be cooked. There was not 1 dish we dislied all were splendid. We were so full and so satisfied by the end of the meal. If youre looking to experience good peranakan food and dont mind paying more, would definitely 100% recommend this to anyone who loves peranakan food or even new to peranakan food for the real authentic taste!

Table of 10 booked for family gathering. Ambience is okay, service is slow, waitress aren’t super responsive. Also, this place was awarded one Michelin star but the experience and food feels below average compared to other nyonya places in Penang. ***The price is cut throat! *** Fam of ten and price came up to nearly 1.2K for dinner. Beware, the photos on the menu has no price. It is hard to do the maths. Eg - Ice water is RM3 - Joo Hu char is RM 48, suppose to be medium size but when it came it is more like small size and it is very average compared to my grandma’s cooking - Gandum is RM 13 per small bowl. The waitress said it is medium bowl, but it is clearly not. In the end - One person two mouthfuls - Nasi ulam is more than RM11 per plate - the Adam pedas dish is almost RM190 - sambal sotong is way too spicy and expensive RM90 Once you walk in, they will try to slaughter u. My poor wallet took awhile to recover 😭😭😭😭

The fried rice is so fragrant and flavour is very complicated. Prawns are so fresh. Chicken is juicy! Decor is a bit old fashioned and random but still clean and neat.

You can smell the aroma of Tau Eu Bak (braised pork in dark soy sauce) before it reach your table. The pork tripe soup is tasty without the overwhelming pepper taste, The beef tending has spicy kicks to it and exactly how I like it. Will be coming back for more.

Really cutthroat price. The bill for 2 person comes up to RM300++. I’ve already a bad feeling when we ordered the food and the lady (long black hair) trying to upsell us the Assam Fish and told us will give use small portion as we have already ordered 3 dishes. We ordered 1. Tau Yu Bak - Meat is tender and nice but the Tau Yu Sauce is a bit on the sweet side. 2. Ju Hoo Char - So so only 3. Assam Prawns - They use big prawns (beware cos open to market price, you better ask first) and the Assam paste is just put on top, you don’t really taste the Assam inside the prawns. Really disappointing dish and expensive. 4. Assam Fish - Fish (also market price) is nice but RM80+ is an overkill despite saying give us small portion, they didn’t. 5. Pengat - Not really pengat but like bubur cha cha with pisang. (So so only) The place is a bit old and over-deco with Nyonya things, smells of old wooden lacquer in the entire restaurant, basically from the old furnitures. Got 2 waiter walking up and down white we are eating, quite annoying and will come collect the finished dishes randomly. Service also quite awkward and not friendly, with the chef and owner resting at the back, cos no other customer around and they don’t come ask you about your food. Awarded Michelin but the food tasted not like one, maybe the pricing. The place is totally empty when we left the restaurant and while next door, another Nyonya Restaurant is full of people.

This is one of the best Nyonya restaurants I’ve tried in Penang, recently awarded a Michelin star. The food is excellent, but the service and ambiance could use some improvement. The air conditioning wasn't working well, and the service felt stretched, with one waiter trying to cover the entire area. The highly recommended furry fish head dish was just average and not typical of Nyonya cuisine. However, the tau yew bak was exceptional, with the meat and beancurd braised to perfection, full of flavor, and irresistible. The stewed vegetables with lettuce were a bit too bland for my taste. On the other hand, the fried chicken was a highlight, perfectly marinated with crispy skin, making it a perfect dish to enjoy with rice. The buah keluak chicken was decent, though it leaned more toward a Southern cooking style found in Melaka. The portion was generous. Unfortunately, the fried ngo hiang was disappointing; the skin was lumpy and should have been crispier. The special fried rice was rich with herbs, but I would recommend plain rice to avoid the dishes overpowering its flavor. The Assam prawn worth a try ! Overall, it's a great place to try, though you should expect a somewhat warm ambiance.

My first time here at this restaurant in Penang. We ordered 6 dishes - Assam Pedas fish, beef rendang, Nasi Ulam, braised pork in dark sauce, kangkong in shrimp paste and chilli, and a brinjal dish To us the most outstanding dish was the Assam Pedas fish.. The sauce was great. We also tried the Nasi Ulam (a blend of herbs, spices and vegetables cooked with the rice to give an aromatic flavour. The beef rendang was Ok as we had tasted better ones before. The desserts we ordered were Gandum (taste like terigu), Pulut Hitam and Pengat. All of them were good, especially with the gula melaka. The best one was the Pengat (which tasted like bubur cha cha). It tasted creamy and delicious. Would we come again? Yes. The only gripe I have is the Peranakan decor. It looks haphazardly over-decorated especially with the Peranakan objects. A touch here and a touch there would be nice. No need to overwhelm us as we already know this is a Peranakan eating place and not a museum.
