CEKI Nyonya Restaurant

I don't quite comprehend the poor reviews for this Perenakan restaurant. I had one of the best Perenakan meal in my life at Ceki. This is a high praise considering that I come from a city that has plenty of choices when it comes to Perenakan food. There were many dishes that were unique. The cuttlefish salad with turnip and shrimp was one such example. The Nasi Ulam was out-of-the-world delicious and pretty. They were generous with the ingredients that were mixed into the rice. The rice was so flavourful I could eat it on its own. Next come the main dishes. I ordered prawn and fish fillet. Both proteins were served in their unique gravies. The flavour of the gravies were deep and complex. There were so many flavours to it. It was bold and rich, but yet controlled and calibrated. I had the luxury of being the only customer that night. What impressed me most the professionalism of the chef. Every item was prepared fresh. The owner told me that there was only one chef in the restaurant and he prepared all dishes by himself. The deco was a bonus to the dining experience. There were authentic Perenakan artefacts and the interior is irrevocably Perenakan. It felt like you are dining at someone's house. It exudes a posh yet homely feeling. The waitress was warm and recommended good dishes to us. However, I must say that she was overly attentive and stepped into my private space. She was listening to my conversation with my friend and interrupted us on a few occasions. I know she meant no harm. I would have gave her service a 10/10 if she had respected my personal boundaries. Other than that, the entire experience at the restaurant is nothing short of splendid!

Seriously good nyonya food in Penang minus the queues. I was surprised the whole restaurant was empty when we went, I felt weird to have anxiously made a booking to an empty restaurant. But honestly one of the best nasi ulam I’ve ever had. The udang sambal petai was incredible - so generous with the petai, just mouthfuls of petai which is so rare! And the otak otak was also creamy, almost like custard. This place is so good I will definitely go for a second visit next time I’m in Penang. Price is on the high side but then a lot of these nyonya restaurants in Georgetown are priced in this way.

Finally got a chance to try this resto. Wonderful surprise! Delicious nyonya fare with superb dishes done in the Ceki inimitable way - buah keluak chicken - assam prawns (in gravy) - the delectable tau eu bak - richly flavoured nasi ulam, not holding back the herbs & spices - Daun Ubi Kayu Masak Lemak Prices slightly on the high side, thus becoming a grumble point with some folks. I'd say -- go in and enjoy yourselves!

Food selection were limited. Don’t have quite a few Paranakan dishes that I wanted. Taste wise about average, not really fantastic. Price is a killer. 1st meal in Penang for our family of 4 were outrageous though I’d mentally prepare myself after going through the menu. After a few days in Penang and ate in other Paranakan restaurants, this place is the most expensive one among all. Don’t trust Michelin rating as they’re not always right.

Food taste is acceptable. Price is outrageously high. Nasi ulam is rm28 while the fish becomes rm84. Normal portion for chicken is more than 50. More like "cekik" price in this restaurant.

Best peranakan food in penang!! Initially was quite skeptical as the rating was average, but realised that it was actually because of the price point that people were put off by and not the food itself. Coming from Singapore, this was comparable to Singapores fare of peranakan cuisine as we are used to it being on the higher side. Aside from pricing, the food was excellent. We had the kiam chye ark, lor bak, nyonya chap chye, beef rendang, assam fish. The server also highly recommended the nasi ulam and the sambal goreng (prawns) which did not disappoint at all. All the dishes we tried tasted very authentic and each dish's flavour were all complex, could really tell each dish took hours to be cooked. There was not 1 dish we dislied all were splendid. We were so full and so satisfied by the end of the meal. If youre looking to experience good peranakan food and dont mind paying more, would definitely 100% recommend this to anyone who loves peranakan food or even new to peranakan food for the real authentic taste!

The fried rice is so fragrant and flavour is very complicated. Prawns are so fresh. Chicken is juicy! Decor is a bit old fashioned and random but still clean and neat.
