Where to Enjoy a Glass of Chardonnay This Summer in Chicago | Eater

"Cellar Door is where wine enthusiasts come to eat, drink, and unwind. Founded by Sean Chaudhry in 2005 and purchased by longtime general manager Ryan Jansky in 2021, the team is dedicated to special yet affordable wines that can be enjoyed in good company. So it is no surprise that Cellar Door stocks Harken Chardonnay. Once you have your chilled glass ready, order from a menu of tasty bites, like truffle burrata bruschetta or smoked salmon dip with toasted baguette. Of course, like any good wine cellar and shop, there are charcuterie boards as well. With plenty of outdoor seating, just the right type of snacks to keep you going, and the finest wines to enjoy, Cellar Door may just become your new favorite hangout." - Ariel Kanter

Google
Extremely cute bottle shop serving glasses of wine and a full menu of tasty bites. The staff is very knowledgeable about wine and pairings with food. The charcuterie board was top notch. Home made jelly’s were available as well as off menu cheeses that were extremely delicious! I loved that they had outdoor seating and parking in a lot behind the shop. A cute couch and seating area in the back was the perfect place to bring a small group. Ample seating both indoors and out, excellent food and friendly staff made this place a 11/10

My wife and I stopped by for her birthday this evening. This is now a favorite. Took just one visit. Great place. I hope I don't offend the owner or anyone that works there when I say this, but it feels like a deeply rude and locals place. And I love it. It just kind of feels like you're at a friend's house. The Smashburger is damn good ( sorry for swearing). But it was really really good. I even stood up and told the chef. Our server, was awesome. She was hopping. The whole place was hopping. But I don't think I saw one person wait for anything. And it's not something I take for granted. I know this is a big review, but this place came at the perfect time at the end of a pretty crappy day. This turned it around for both of us. Deeply grateful.

Google
Overall, the wine selection is quite massive, though the beers offers are a bit low. There was a mistake when I ordered an 8 dollar Rosé, and they brought out a 40 dollar one instead. Of course, better wine is going to hopefully be tasty, but since I didn't order it in the first place, it's a bit of an issue. The charcuterie board appetizer was not bad, the homemade jalapeno jelly was delicious with the array of crackers and cheeses provided. I would recommend it for a relaxing evening out with friends and family, when you want to splurge on some wine and crackers! Make sure you go when there is good weather however, sitting outside to enjoy the fresh air is one of the benefits that places like this offer.

Nice wine 🍷 bar. Great burgers 🍔, delicious charcuterie boards. Friendly staff. Nice place to meet with friends and enjoy some great wine and food. Atmosphere is vibrant.

Google
Four of us are regular at this place. This place is not too big but that makes the service feel very personal. It’s got an elaborate wine collection. Most of the people who come there seem to be regular like us. Has a very good vibe to it.

Google
Great establishment to spend a portion of Father Day 2023 (part 2)😂 We were able to snag a high top table up on sidewalk after originally sitting in full on sun table down in street, near traffic. Staff were super efficient and friendly. Ordered White Sangria $6/glass, which turned out to be perfect for the nice hot, sunny day👍 We didn't order any food, but the items we saw being served looked really good. Charcuterie boards were being ordered... Maybe next visit.

Google
Nice place. They have some good beer and a great wine selection. We had a charcuterie plate and we loved it, but portions were small.

Yelp
Cute wine shop in downtown DG. Servers are friendly and attentive. Menu features wine, some cocktails, beers/ciders, and food. Try the cheese board -- it is excellent! Nachos and sandwiches are solid, too. Here is a pic of my white sangria. Hits the spot on a summer day!

Yelp
All my experiences at Cellar Door have been very positive! The service staff are great and you can't beat the drink options. Small enough for an intimate date night and social enough to meet new people. The menu options range from charcuterie boards and flatbreads to salads and panini. They expanded their outdoor seating, so I'm looking forward to enjoying this new space. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Very nice wine bar in downtown Downers Grove. The inside has a bar and some tables as well as bottles to purchase. There is also a patio in the summer which is usually packed so it's best to get here early. Affordable pricing and friendly staff, would recommend!

Yelp
Affordable AND DELICIOUS! Stuffed mushrooms and steak nachos were on point! Service is amazing also by Lena.

Yelp
Cellar Door is a local wine bar with some excrllent food choices which is the focus of this review. Their cauliflower crust pizza is outstanding and a must try next time you are there. You can design your own charcuterie board which is an excellent option for groups. No matter what you order you will NOT be disappointed. Its a nice, welcoming local spot good for conversations and food!
google avatar

Katelyn N.

Yelp
Service was not great. Ordered stuffed mushrooms, truffle burrata and wine. Stuffed mushrooms were okay. 6/10 "Truffle" burrata, is pretty, but 2/10 Definitely not enough burrata and If truffle is going to be on the menu we should be able to taste a little bit of truffle. There was not a single trace of truffle, ZERO TRUFFLE I assume they mistakenly forgot, I NICELY mentioned it and the lady with blond short hair in a yellow shirt. She didn't seem like a normal waitress. She didn't apologize or check. She told me "well they put a little of it on there." Terrible response.. Definitely will not be coming back.

Yelp
Yummy deliciousness with a side of fun& attentive service. This is a great local spot to enjoy a lovely glass of wine or a pint of their large variety of on- tap ale. The cheese board was delicious and although my friend and I each ordered a glass of wine, the server kept bringing us little tastes of something new to try which made it even more enjoyable!

Yelp
I was disappointed. The main problem; it took way to long to get the food. Around 40 minutes. Wife ordered the Truffle Beef I had the Truffle grilled cheese. She loved the sandwich, but the grilled cheese was a disappointment. I expect a good grilled cheese to have buttery bread, not just toast. The sandwich was pretty bland, most the cheese was in one lump on one side. The paired wine, I feel was not a good match at all. It did not complement the sandwich it contrasted it. The wine was very sharp and seemed harsh compared to the cheese sandwich. I will not be returning.

Yelp
Let's just say... me and the wife didn't need viagra that night Ambience ... I think so Service I'll thank them BEFORE I thank the troops Food and wine. Well... you already know how that went

Yelp
Delicious food and attentive staff. Was a really hot day when I came, so everyone was seated inside. Staff was a solid B+. I bet they'd be better if it wasn't 100 outside. Family friendly though not a place I would think of bringing my kids too. Food was well proportioned and fresh and tasty. Great drink specials. Not too pricey
google avatar

Alison P.

Yelp
Always a great time! Rotating specials and reliable cheese board presentation! Wine club options are a great steal for the money and they also carry lots of different price points on bottles for retail/dining in. Would recommend talking to Brittany before your next dinner party, she's a sommelier!

Yelp
One of my favorite places in Downtown Downers Grove. It is a perfect place to start off for the evening, to pick up a bottle of wine or just stop in for a glass! Their food is delicious, and I love how you can custom build your charcuterie board. Their bottle selection is amazing and I have always had a great experience with anything I picked out. They have an adorable outdoor area that is great for people watching. Their pricing is surprisingly reasonably. Also they have a decent beer selection as well. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Amy T.

Yelp
Came here for a glass while in town. Brittany was so knowledgeable and attentive. She was so sweet and went out of her way to share her fun wine knowledge with us! Their bottle selection is top notch! Will be back soon :)

Yelp
One of our favorite spots in the neighborhood. They have a HUGE wine and drink selection with great food that pairs perfectly. Definitely recommend for a date night or a night out with friends.

Yelp
Great atmosphere. Very helpful staff. Always enjoy meeting friends here. Have not tried the food yet, but lots of great wine choices.

Yelp
Sangria is fantastic and they usually have something going on - live music or bingo. The service is average depending on who you get though.
google avatar

Laura G.

Yelp
Nice, quaint, small place serving drinks and food. Love the sangria and cauliflower crust margarita pizza (among other things). I always have a good time and would have given a higher rating except for one thing. There is one public toilet and it is always gross and disgusting. Reminds me of the bars near Wrigley after a Cubs game.

Marty P.

Yelp
Love this place! Great comfort food, love the charcuterie and plenty of great wine. Have been there multiple times and always looking forward to going back.

Yelp
This place never disappoints. Amazing what they can do out of that tiny kitchen! Hands down best burger around.... Excellent variety of beers on tap as well

Yelp
Such a cute little wine shop in downtown Downers! We went on a Friday night around 5-6 pm, and we're able to get a table on the patio right near the sidewalk without a wait. In fact it was pretty slow, and picked up later through the evening. I was pretty confused if we should seat ourselves or pick out a bottle of wine and then sit. It wasn't really clear to me and I asked a staff member and he said we could do either. I hoped that meant they would bring menus, and luckily they did. They had a good wine selection, and a small dinner menu, which was perfect for us! Our table outside was kind of at an angle, and I would have loved if they had some background music or something playing, but otherwise the patio was great! Our server was fantastic, even though he seemed very busy - and we split a charcuterie board which was DELICIOUS! I definitely love their bread and the fig jam too! (Fig jam + goat cheese is a dream!) The prices weren't too expensive for a wine bar, and I would have loved to have try more on their menu. (Especially considering they had a FAKE CHICKEN salad on their menu, and I'm ALLL about places that think about vegetarians.) Great place for a glass of wine and a low key night!

Yelp
We scored a Groupon for a date night at Cellar Door & in my opinion it was money well spent. We each received a glass of wine & were able to choose three meats or cheeses along with condiments. I noticed they had bacon wrapped dates and definitely had to try those too! Although the dates were overcooked slightly they were still pretty good. Service was solid & the wine was delish! I'd definitely go back.

Yelp
Love the atmosphere, the food, and the wine selection. Great for date night, to hang with friends or just because.

Yelp
I visited today around 7pm for the first time. I wasn't sure how thing work so I stood at the door waiting for someone to become available. The guy at the cashier just raised his eyebrows at me and said "yes?"... I asked to be seated and he said "oh you just get your own table here." The waiter was sweet enough to show me my way, but my first impression set a bad tone to te night. Better welcoming and greeting people goes along way in customer service.

John W.

Yelp
A gem in downtown Downers Grove. Food is excellent and Sangria is fantastic. The staff is great and very friendly. They also have a great selection of beer.
google avatar

Bailey M.

Yelp
I came here because of a Groupon. The place is definitely small and rustic, probably not somewhere you'd go for the decor alone. Good drink options. I really enjoyed the white sangria. It was light and refreshing. The price was fair too. We had the pepperoni pizza as an appetizer. It was mediocre but not bad. All of my friends and I decided to order sandwiches. The sandwiches were really big that if you just wAnted a snack or a light meal you could split it with someone. They weren't loaded with meat but we thought the sandwiches were tasty. They serve the sandwiches with ruffles potato chips which is kind of cheap. They should make something instead like potato salad or soup. I get that it's a small kitchen but soup or potato salad would be totally doable. So for that reason I thought the sandwiches were a little over priced.

Yelp
Cute little spot for my lunch date with my minor daughter. We sat by the windows enjoying watching the dogs walking by while we ate a well prepared turkey sandwich and margarita pizza. The pizza was a bit salty but otherwise delicious. The best part of the meal was the tiramisu, arguably the best I have tasted in over 20 years! Next time I ll bring my husband and delve into their vast selection of wines. FYI- these pix were taken AFTER we dived into the meal but all I have:)

Yelp
Came here for an early birthday celebration and I have to say, it was well worth the trip. This place is great. Has a cool relaxed atmosphere. And there always seems to be a great Groupon worth snagging before you visit. They've got an incredible selection of wine. And their cheese trays and food offerings are equally amazing. Make sure you try the charcuterie board! Their homemade pickles, jalapeño jelly, and pickled veggies are awesome.
google avatar

Heather L.

Yelp
Please disregard the menu here on yelp, it's not up to date. I just enjoyed the steak and blue salad and since steak is not my thing, they were able to substitute an impossible burger and it was delish!! Cider was yummy too!! Perfect day for a patio lunch.

Yelp
UPDATE: My wife and I've been coming here regularly for three years and it is now a staple for both of us. Anytime we have anyone in town we will bring them over and this place is just amazing! Ryan, the owner, is fantastic, the service is always great, and Nick, the chef, churns out some of the best food this side of the Mississippi. Go now. You won't regret it!

Yelp
As I am unfortunately not from the area, I always make it a top priority to visit the Cellar Door whenever I am visiting Downers. I have been a total of three times and each has been as amazing as the last! I 100000% love trying different cheese and wines (and know a good deal about each as I made sure to take a Wine/Cheese class in college since I had the opportunity and plus why not?) and are never disappointed when I come here. Their prices are VERY reasonable for the quality of both cheese/meat/fruit selection as well as their wine pours and selections. The staff is very knowledgeable any time I ask for recommendations on what to order. As I have never ordered 'actual' food from the Cellar Door, I am sure it is as good as their cheese plates! I have sat both inside and outside and both are fantastic! The ambiance and decor is great, and their outside seating does have a roof overtop, so you can be in the shade which is a must for me if it is during a hot/humid day. Also, you can people watch outside which is something I love to do! I have been to brunch one time and that was incredible! I also went to trivia once and sat outside during that. It was SO FUN! Their difficulty of questions what was I was hoping for (the ones that make you say "GAHHH I SHOULD KNOW THIS" vs "I didn't even know that was a thing"). Can't wait to visit again to see what is new!

Yelp
Stopped by the Cellar Door for a glass of wine and charcuterie with my husband as he has never been here before. I've enjoyed my past visits at Cellar Door and wanted to share it with him. We were lucky to find two empty seats at the bar as it was very busy on a Saturday late afternoon. The staff we encountered were so friendly and knowledgeable about their wine and beer. We ordered a meat and cheese board that consisted of three cheeses, duck pate and prosciutto along with marcona almonds, honey, grilled bread and crackers. It was nicely presented and it was the perfect accompaniment to our wine. I love this little wine shop and will definitely be back again.

Yelp
I've loved this place for at least 7 years... but who is keeping count? Years ago, it was my favorite "first date" when I was meeting dates arranged on Match or Coffee Meets Bagel. It was a total win win for me, even if my date wasn't a great match, I could count on having an excellent glass of wine or two, enjoy some nice fresh air out on their patio, or the nice view of their extensive wall of wine inside! Today I'd like to add a bit more about their food. I've eaten their nibbles in the restaurant before, all delicious. The portions are on the small side, which is actually perfect, I never had to eat too much or waste any food. Lately, I've done their carry out, and I can actually say their "dinner for two" special of Veal Tenderloin may be in the running for the best take out meal I've ever had. They did a fantastic job of pairing the veal with amazing mashed potatoes, asparagus, a house salad (with perfectly seasoned vinaigrette) and a very special pinot noir. I can't wait to try more! (I've already pre-ordered their weekend shrimp Alfredo!!)

Yelp
Well, the Cellar Door never disappoints! The Acorn Hummus was amazing. We sat in the garden area and it's so quaint. The servers are always attentive and friendly. It's our go to place for a glass of wine snd their awesome Cauliflower pizzas
google avatar

Yelp
Fantastic wine selection and good prices. Not a great place to sit at the bar (no ambiance) but the tables near the wine are cute. The behind the bar layout doesn't make sense, all you see are dirty dishes. The outdoor seating looks nice too. They have a monthly club deal of 2 wines for about $35, which given their nice selection, seems like a good deal. We'll be back.
google avatar

Angelo B.

Yelp
Your service is below par and your staff is the just rude good luck with that during a pandemic better places to spend your money
google avatar

Yelp
I've been here a couple times now. Once for an afternoon beverage and another time for lunch. The Cellar Door offers pretty good wine and beer selections along with a delicious menu of food including meats, cheeses, small plates, sandwiches, salads, pizza, and dessert. Their patio is on the smaller side, but it's a nice option for enjoying a glass of wine outside on a beautiful day. Service both times I've stopped in have been great. Everyone is always friendly and attentive. My only suggestion would be for the staff to give some further explanation as to what The Cellar Door is all about -- for folks who are visiting for the first time. Their walls are lined with tons of bottles of wine for purchase, but I just wish someone would have explained to me exactly what they have to offer and where the different types of wine and price points are located. I felt a tad awkward browsing the small space without any direction while other people were sitting at the tables in front of the wall. If I was just passing by (and hadn't done my research on Yelp), I think I would have been confused as to whether this was a restaurant, wine bar, or wine shop. Of course it's all 3, which is is why the servers should be proud to explain all they have to offer! I have to say, I really enjoyed their beets and goat cheese salad. For $10 this salad includes spring greens topped with beets, goat cheese, and walnuts all drizzled with cream of balsamic. I'm a sucker for goat cheese, but this combo of flavors was really delicious! I will for sure be back again -- wine, cheese, and charcuterie are a few of my favorite things!

Yelp
Was looking through Groupon for somewhere new to go for a lite dinner and found the Cellar Door. This is the perfect place for a date night. We went on a Saturday night with no reservations, so it was a little busy, but we were able to get seating at the bar. The server was great, but we weren't ready at first and it did take him a little while to get back to us. The Groupon covered a 3 flight charcuterie board and a couple of glasses of wine. We went with the brie, white cheddar and calabrese salami, along with the house pickles, the cornichons and the green apples. We also did a white wine and a red wine, both were good, but I cannot recall the names of them. Receipt shows GL HW Proverb and GL HR Century. The white was not too dry, not too sweet. The red had a deep rich flavor that was not overly full of oaky, which I don't like. All of the food was so good. It was fresh, with great flavor and the tray came with pieces of toasted bread and crackers. The pickles were a bit spicy, but not overly so. The cornichons were a pickled (vinegary) cucumbers. The second wines we tried were the surprise red and the Malbec, Trapiche Oak Cask, which was delightfully smooth and very good. So good, in fact, that we bought a bottle. We were still hungry and opted for the cellar nachos, which were a cold nacho and we found them a bit disappointing. Hubby is not big of anything with tomatoes (pico de gallo) or avocado, so there wasn't much he could eat on them, as there wasn't a lot of cheese. I liked them, but then again I don't mind the pico or avocado. Service was good and friendly. The total bill would have been $54 without the groupon. We will definitely be back again.

Yelp
Nice place to have a glass of wine or a crafty! The have a few seats outside/ curbside. Didn't try the food yet, but the options sound tasty. Nexttime around I'm going for the goat cheese for sure. Sniff, swish, and sip. Let's. GO!
google avatar

Katie N.

Yelp
I came here because I had a Groupon. At first we were greeted at the bar, but then I felt the servers we're fighting over who got to serve what table. It seems like they had a lot of regular clients but as a new customer, I felt out of place. When they poured the wine, the one bottle was almost empty, so they combined it with another bottle. The house red was okay, and the sangria was decent. The cheese plate was good too. Due to the customer service, is why I'm only giving 3 stars.
google avatar

Maronda H.

Yelp
It was a very nice chill place to sip on some wine. I had a Groupon and decide to use it on a hot and sunny day. The parking is hard to find on a Friday because of The Downer's Grove Car Show. But I was able to find me a park for 2hrs. Cool place to hang out with some friends or even a date night. However, it was a busy Friday Evening and it took someone to finally take my order after waiting 20mins. I think if I didn't have a Groupon and it is was about to expire. I would of walked out and found someplace else to have a drink. But once I finally got someone's attention. I was a happy camper with my selection of wine and my Asian Chicken Lettuce Wrap. I have to come again on a different night to really get a better feeling on this place.
google avatar

Nicole T.

Yelp
Cellar Door is my go to wine night location. The menu features a long list of wines, and a variety of other drinks. The sangrias are also phenomenal! All the food I have ever ordered from there is indulgent and decadent. 11/10 recommend this place

Yelp
First time here and the service was great and the food was even better! I especially loved the Shepard's pie. I will definitely be back here for a mimosa as well.

Yelp
Brittany was amazing, as was HEather. Brittany had amazing wine suggestions and did wonderfully with the surprise wines!

Yelp
Really cute wine joint in Downers Grove. My friend and I went in for a drink. I ordered the Tinchi (new age wine with lemon and lime) and my friend had a red. It's great, was busy but found a spot to sit and enjoyed my friend. They have a good wine selection and you can get cheese or food. It's been about 5 years since I've been here last but it's still a great place.
google avatar

Emmit G.

Yelp
Great venue for business or pleasure. For me it is a destination for both! The staff is friendly and helpful, and make all feel welcome. Emmit George, Agent with Transworld Business Advisors of Downers Grove

Yelp
I went here with my fiancee to finish off date nite and it was the cherry on top of a perfect evening. Jill was absolutely amazing, attentive but not overbearing and the wine was amazing. The bacon wrapped dates are succulent and amazing with the goat cheese filling. 10/10 will definitely wine and dine here again!
google avatar

Aimee N.

Yelp
I'd give this place a 3.5 I consider myself to be well-versed in wine. This place didn't have an overly impressive list for wine by the glass which was slightly disappointing as I was not looking to drink a whole bottle. This was my first visit here and I didn't entirely understand if all the wines they have in bottles on the wall were to take home or to enjoy in the cafe. Next time I'll take a closer look at the bottle selection-they seemed to have a lot! With that said the dining-in prices are very reasonable for a wine bar in the Chicago suburbs. Probably the best deal you'll find to be honest. They had sangria for $6. My friend and I shared a split bottle (1/2 bottle) and it was $10. We also shared a lovely cheese tray which was only $11 for 3 cheeses, 3 accompaniments (dried cranberries, almonds, etc), and bread/crackers. The environment is very nice and our server was very friendly. I find some wine bars to be intimidating to people who aren't aficionados but this was not that way at all! For $25 my friend and I had an excellent start to our evening in downtown Downers Grove. I will absolutely check this place out again but think there are definitely wine bars out there with a better selection of wine by the glass.
