The Best Restaurants Near Your Ballot Drop Box

"This spot serves some of our favorite tortas as of late, and is very close to the library. We recommend going with their carne asada sandwich or the milanesa loaded with nearly an entire avocado and slices of queso fresco." - aimee rizzo

7 Great Tortas In Seattle

"Your order: Cemitas milanesa de pollo or Cemitas carne asada While we have love for all tortas, we have a special admiration for the cemita. As the older, wiser cousin of the torta, the cemita has a super crusty roll with sesame seeds that’s made with egg. And the rolls they use at Cemitas Poblanos in White Center (located in a strip mall off 509) somehow have the perfect ratio of crunchy outer layer to soft, chewy middle. While we have a hard time picking a favorite between the carne asada and milanesa de pollo, they’re both stuffed with thin, rectangular blocks of queso fresco, pickled jalapeños, and what seems like one whole avocado per sandwich. What gives the carne asada an edge, though, are the carrots and onions stewed in beef fat, which put to shame any vegetables from a slow cooker pot roast." - carlo mantuano

Google
We enjoyed these huge, full of flavor sandwiches very much. We’ve had tortas and aren’t fans, but Cemitas are somehow different. For one the bread is different and can hold up to the ingredients. Another reason is the sandwiches are absolutely huge. We managed to eat all of it in one sitting and fully regretted it as our bellies were so full later on. We could’ve taken them home and made them another meal. The spicy pork one was our favorite with lots of rich flavor. We also had the Milanesa which is pounded out breaded and fried pork. If you drizzle it with the green salsa they have it is absolutely perfect, but it does need that fabulous salsa. We also ordered chips and salsa, which was tostadas and the green salsa. The place was full of people and quite lively with a soccer match on. Really nice hold in the wall vibes. Felt like San Diego/Mexico.

Google
Carne Asada burrito is a great pack along version of a traditional plate dish! These guys nailed it! Not over saturated just well made ingredients. Real Asada strips like home grilled asada. Love the quesa used here too. Muchos Gracias

Google
As a Mexican born in Puebla, I can say the taste is almost the same as an original cemita Poblana, it's really good! I really felt I was in an authentic restaurant in Puebla, I'm happy my cousin found the place, we're definitely coming back to try something else.

Google
Service is always been good. But as of late (the last 4 times visited) the tortillas for the tacos are hard as cardboard almost like they’re the day’s before unused food. Makes me wonder about the rest of the foods quality.

Google
not sure how this place has so many good reviews…. that tacos were extremely dry. the rice and beans sucked. in the restaurant the photo shows cleaned & headless shrimp, but they were in fact not. they were also super warm like they had been microwaved. plus is extremely overpriced. $40 to take 2 bites of everything and throw it away. disappointed.

Google
Kind of out of the way, but as close to the authentic thing I've come across in the Seattle area. The queso Oaxaca also seems to be better then most I've tasted. Not a giant restaurant, but makes it feel like you're in someone's kitchen. Solid place for a good cemita

Google
The food portions are large and the flavors are unique. We tried a Cemita for the first time and it was delicious.

Google
I didn't like the food, but that's just my personal taste. Look at the menus and pictures; if it looks good you will probably enjoy it. The quality was fine, I just didn't personally enjoy it. Service was great, no problems there.

Yelp
This place makes one feel like youre eating at grandmas house. Staff are friendly. Food is rich in flavor. Portions are very generous. If buying a cemita you can definitely share with two people. Not an aesthetically pleasing restaurant but the food is authentic.

Yelp
Great little spot for flavorful and authentic Mexican food. This is the spot if you want real Mexican, not globs of sour cream or Monterey Jack cheese melted on everything. The menu is pictures on the wall, so if you don't know what you want or what to order you can look at the pics or ask for a rec from the staff. The mole was great and peanuty and savory with a little sweetness. The whole fried fish was great too. Super friendly service! Order a michelada! It comes with shrimp!

Yelp
So good! Unique options. Tasty tacos. And the burrito is the size of a small baby! Come give it a taste. I will be back.

Yelp
they gave the wrong order to me and then i called many times they not answer the phone. I came from Kent and they don't want to make the right order expensive food for this sht that's gross....

Yelp
I always get the Chicken Sandwich (grilled chicken breast) with no jalapenos. A cemita https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cemita here is a gigantic, round torta that is stuffed full of grilled chicken breast (caramelized at different edges/areas for interesting textures/flavors) and thickly laden with avocado slices, with some onion, white cheese, and apparently a couple spices. It's a gigantic meal, so unless you can eat a gigantic meal, I suggest that after you get home, immediately cut the sandwich in half then save half of the sandwich in the refrigerator. Don't try to eat it in the car... there is a lot of avocado so you will make a mess unless you are intimately familiar with these sandwiches and just take a bite or two before you start driving. :) The woman who answers the phone speaks excellent English, but she will probably answer the phone in Spanish. If you don't call ahead, and you're looking at the cash register next to the covered doorway into the kitchen while wondering what to do: look at the pictures of the food on the wall, then when you're ready to order, look for the little chrome bell on the counter, then ring it. Tap2Pay is accepted, so you can pay with your phone. The restaurant is located in a very small strip mall that is anchored by a gas station (look to the right of the gas station) near the freeway interchange. There is an exit from SB Hwy. 509 and an entrance to NB Hwy. 509, but no exit from NB Hwy. 509 and no entrance to SB Hwy. 509. It's a small space, and there are always people eating other dishes that are sorta mysterious to me and are apparently more expensive. The Chicken Sandwich (grilled chicken with no jalapenos) to go always makes me happy and full. :)

Yelp
At first I was slightly sad that the cost of food truly has risen... but once I received my brand new baby boy of a burrito weighing literally 2.6lbs all was forgiven. I've only gotten a third of the way through the football so I can't say yet what hidden surprises reside on the other side of this continent but I'm sure it'll be more good stuff!
google avatar

Yelp
I love Cemitas but their prices have skyrocketed. $16-18 for one sandwich looking dish. I'm sorry but is not feasible for a family of 3 to spend $70 to eat here.

Yelp
This is my literal around-the-corner spot. The folks in there are incredibly friendly and they have a ton of dishes you wouldn't find in other joints around Seattle. This is simple food -- no big globs of cheddar cheese or sour cream and no giant puddles of refried beans. The fare here is much lighter and depends on the grilled onions, jalapeños, chipotles, and avocado for flavor. Don't substitute or omit the ingredients. This like eating at a neighbor's house. It's good food made by kind people. The telenovelas on the TV make waiting for a takeout order especially fun and the clientele come from all walks of life. The prices seem pretty consistent with other places around Burien except for the street tacos which are a bit pricier than the local taco trucks or Birrieria Tijuana (my other go to). The place serving tropical drinks next door looks fun, too.

Yelp
Got the regular pork burrito. Asked them to hold the lettuce and add jalapeños. The meat was excellent. Everything else about it was less than adequate. Firstly, although the burrito was quite large in girth and wrapped properly in foil, it was fully flaccid - impossible to eat without a fork. Second, the generous portion of avocado was promising but the fruit was very tough and mealy - almost grainy. The pinto beans had a strong chemical flavor and were pretty mushy. They used massive chunks of queso blanco, but the cheese was entirely flavorless and room temperature - not melted in the slightest bit. It was just a bad burrito. The setting of the taqueria is very rough. It may have been a mistake to visit here just a couple days after spending a week in taqueria paradise (SF bay area).

Yelp
definitely a hole in the wall restaurant - customer service is great the food is good. I always order a cemita de pollo asado with chipotle. It hits every time! The tacos are also so good! I'm not a big fan of tacos but I'll eat them every time here! My parents love the 7 mares soup as well!

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place by accident. I love tacos and Mexican good in general and this place es muy autentico! Real deal Mexican food. Very low key but I'm eating here on a Sunday during a Seahawks game at noon and the place is packed! That is always a sign of good food! Huge portions, I love the #28!!! Sabrosa!
google avatar

Tomik N.

Yelp
Very good burrito, I loved it. I think I found my favorite spot, I live in the same street but never tried this place until yesterday. Only suggestion I have is please melt the cheese in your burrito and cut the asada in small pieces. I heard their chicharones tacos are the best, will give that a try next time. Thanks

Yelp
The best Mexican Puebla's food in Seattle. I have never eaten some delicious Mexican cuisine like Cemitas Poblanas. Very recommend it, specially "Camarones con Cangrejo"
google avatar

Yelp
Been going here -- off and on -- for over a decade and I love the veggie burrito, the staff and the clientele. The burritos are HUGE and are very distinctive from other restaurants. Love it.

Yelp
Only restaurant of its type that is soy free that I have found. Excellent homemade hot sauce

Yelp
I first head of Cemitas Poblanas after my friend stumbled upon it while getting gas, and saw a long line of Spanish-speaking people surrounding the hole in the wall restaurant. I have never had a cemita prior to this, but my friend showed me what she got there and I knew I had to go. The lady who took our orders was very nice and accommodating, being patient with us while we tried to figure out the Spanish picture menu. I got the #1 which was a fried cutlet cemita with the protein of your choice (I got chicken), while my friend got the carne asada tacos. The cemita was huge, it can easily be shared between 2-3 people. The bread was round and generously packed with avocado, cheese and meat, which was great for me as I love avocado, cheese and meat. The carne asada tacos came with salsa and a pepper. Both entrees were very good, my friend thought the chicken in the cemita was a little dry but I thought it was fine with the chipotle, avocado and cheese. The carne asada was also delicious, being very juicy and flavorful. I wish they had utensils on the tables, but I might be eating the food wrong. I plan to come back to explore the rest of the diverse menu!

Yelp
They rule and all the food is dank. Favorite spot in the area. I have dreams about the nachos.
google avatar

Yelp
Good Traditional Mexican Food... Small Friendly Place and Very Popular... Three and not Four Stars because although the portions are large it is a bit Overpriced in my opinion (as the cheapest item on the menu is a Burrito at over $10 should have $$ on the Yelp listing)...
google avatar

Elissa E.

Yelp
Such amazing carne asada, maybe best I've ever had. Chicken burrito was SO HUGE and had avocado and awesome white cheese inside. The chicken was perfectly charred and juicy. Will be coming back.

Gina R.

Yelp
Went to this place to get some cemitas poblanas and got charged like I ordered the entire restaurant. I live 3 hrs away from this place and I noticed in my way back that the lady charged herself a $10 tip. She was super rude to me and my family. We always come and eat here when we go to seattles childrens hospital and best believe this will be the last time. PLEASE BE AWARE OF WHAT YOU GET CHARGED!!

Stephanie P.

Yelp
After reading the good reviews, I was super excited to try this place out. I took my family here to eat and for 4 plates of food it was $70. Unfortunately, the carne asada and nopales were salty. The rice and beans were bland. Overall, the food was disappointing. I was excited to eat the cemita, but it was just mediocre. First and last visit here, not really worth $70 for poorly made/seasoned food.
google avatar

Yelp
I lived in Puebla for a few years when I was younger and loved cemitas ever since. Now I live in Seattle and when I discovered Cemitas Poblanas about a year ago and I couldn't believe it: they taste exactly as the original! They even have papalo (subject to availability), which is a very strong aromatic herb that some may not like, but for me adds the dishes' distinctive flavor. I haven't tried anything else in the menu yet because cemitas, but go try this place if you like authentic Mexican food.
google avatar

Christopher D.

Yelp
Amazing service, amazing food. It's a great hole in the wall with authentic flavors. Be careful of that red salsa!
google avatar

Nadia G.

Yelp
Hopefully I can finish this review before my food coma hits...(deep breath) It was love at first sight. The first time I spotted the cemita de carne asada sandwich it was this morning in an article by the Seattle Times on Seattle-area sandwich sensations. Then I realized Cemitas Poblanas was just a couple of miles from my job, and the countdown to lunch time began. The cemita de carne asada is HUGE!!! I got it with jalepenos on the side, but ended up putting them in the sandwich for the extra kick. The cemita de carne asada is simple and delicious! How can you go wrong with avocados, steak, Mexican cheese, and grilled onions on fresh bread! Cemitas Poblanas is the real deal...... Here comes the "my stomach is full and happy" food coma.....zzzz
google avatar

Lana B.

Yelp
I've only eaten the cemitas here - the chicken cemitas and the vegetarian cemita. Both have been pretty good with lots of fresh veggies. My favorite is the vegetarian. I've gotten the grilled chicken breast, but also the fried chicken breast, and I much prefer the grilled one. I usually get take out on my way home from work. I want to chuckle at the poster who said the "setting of the taqueria is rough." I work at the elementary school down the street from this restaurant and I would not consider the area to be rough. It's a low-income neighborhood but I feel quite safe working here, running here, and visiting friends here.

Brian M.

Yelp
I was excited to try this place, because it's very close to home. I ordered a steak burrito, but I received a gristle burrito. It was the worst I have ever had, most of it went into the trash. So bad that I can't go back.
google avatar

Kathy P.

Yelp
This was my first time here... I ordered a steak taco and got 95% cilantro and onions. The meat was very dry and bland. Super disappointing, especially since I was craving tacos at the time. I ended up just picking at it and tossing the rest.
google avatar

Sarah E.

Yelp
Ok I wanna start off by saying the food here is pretty good, everything taste fresh including the bread which is great and they are one of the few places around that has papalo but, today my husband and I decided to have lunch here, we ordered 3 cemitas with milanesa, the cemitas were good but it was pretty much a small piece of meat and a ton of avocado. Now I love avocado but half of my sandwich was just cheese and avocado. For the $45 I spent I feel like there should have been some more meat in my sandwich. I'll definitely still eat here again but next time I'm gonna ask for less avocado and more meat.
google avatar

Jedi D.

Yelp
A hell of a torta!!. Not like the usual. -The bread is really good, thick and lovely. ;) -The cheese seperates these Tortas from others, you get a slab of the queso fresco. But its not overwhelming or too strong.. I would say it is their signature. -A good slab of carne asada -nice employees- spanish menu- but you are welcome in there!!
google avatar

Cynthia C.

Yelp
nastiest mexican food i ever had in my life!!!!!! no flavorand tasted like rat meat!!!!!! horrible service too!!!! if i could give them no stars i would! i didn't even eat my more then a bite of my food! don't go here!!!!!!! trust me
google avatar

Angelie M.

Yelp
I've been coming to this place for years, and their food is always so good, specially the Milanesa Cemita! The prices are a little high but very worth it! I can say it's best place in town!! :)
google avatar

Abby C.

Yelp
My first time here. The Cemita de Carne asada is huge and very good! The service is also fast for such good food.

Yelp
Key piece of information: Cemitas Poblanas is located in the teeny strip mall adjacent to the Chevron Station at 805 S. 112th. I hope this saves you from the extended tour of Boulevard Park that I did today, not that there's anything wrong with Boulevard Park. That out of the way, Cemitas Poblanas has some CRAZY good sandwiches, not to mention plates as well. The cemitas (aka sandwiches) are enormous...they're size of my head, which I assure you is not small. These are grand sesame-flecked rounds stuffed with meat, sauteed onion rings, plenty of fresh avocado slices, and mild white cheese...jalapenos optional. Plates of seafood and tacos plus burritos also comprise the menu. The taste is divine, and even a healthy appetite might be satisfied by just a half (sandwiches are purchased as a whole for $8.25). Carne Asada is hearty and packs some chew...even the cerdo (basic ham) is transformed into something special with CP's toppings. Don't forget a Jarritos soda or a Coke from the fridge. This is not a place to visit if you want a crazy unique and intimate atmosphere...the entire dining area is carpeted, brightly lit, and furnished with folding tables and chairs. So now that I've warned you...don't complain about it. These are good folks putting out some darn good food, so like it for what it is.
google avatar

Leigh C.

Yelp
I feel horrible writing this review because the service was so friendly, but the food was terrible!!! I frequent the teriyaki place next door and decided to give this place a shot, which I now regret. I paid $20 for two cemitas, which is not worth it at all. They are large, but it's mostly bread. Not a lot of meat filling, very few caramelized onions, and large chunks of tasteless white cheese. I don't know what to say other than it just did not taste good. The sandwiches were ready in 5 minutes, but the bread was hard and the carne asada inside was cold. Seriously... save your money and skip the cemitas.
google avatar

Jeff M.

Yelp
Excellent Mexican style sandwich fresh ingredients. the portion size was incredible very fresh and a very pleasant server. A nice little divey surprise.
google avatar

Melvin L.

Yelp
Hole-in-the-wall, mom and pop shop. Looking at their picture menu, everything looked expensive ($8-12), but basically everything is double portion or double in size from what you expect. The food is very spicy in a good, authentic and flavorful way. I went for take-out and will do so again next time I'm in the area. The restaurant itself was a little grimy and with a loud tv showing mexican programming.
google avatar

John G.

Yelp
Is a great place to go and eat some people thing that 10 dollars is a lot for a sandwich but the real thing is this sandwich is worth it ! Full for avocado, onions, jalapeño and the meat that you like! I always order LaCemita de Asada and always I ask for a side of rice and bean(btw taste really good) the bread is so good I am almost positive that they make there own bread !!!! Great quality and quantity!!! What else you are looking for !? Try it you won't regret it
google avatar

Michael G.

Yelp
This little hole in the wall in Boulevard Park is my favorite sandwich joint. The Cemitas are huge if not cheap and are full of flavor. A cemita is a Mexican sandwich from the state of Puebla. It is a sesame seed roll with avocado, white cheese, onions, jalapenos if you wish, and your choice of meats. Probably the most ordered meat is the Milanese, a breaded cutlet of either pork or beef, or you could have carne asada or pork skins but I prefer ham because it allows the flavor of the other ingredients to come though. And flavor there is. The sandwich is thick and enough for two. There are other items on the menu that look good but really all I've eaten is the Cemitas. The atmosphere is non-existant with the tele on to univision and plastic tables with a jar of nescafe on them if you want coffee. But really the Cemitas make it up. ¡Fantastico!
google avatar

Bob W.

Yelp
Literally. The. Best. Carne. Asada. Plate. EVER. I could tell from the outside that this place was different than all the rest, they were completely sold out of Torta bread which is another excellent sign. It was packed to the gills with people on a Tuesday night 45 minutes before they closed. Nowadays I fucking hate yelp because of all the idiots on here, but I had to post a review after I had the taco plate here. I've lived in California, I've road trip through the south, I only go to Mexican neighborhoods to eat Mexican food, and I am disgusted with white people Mexican food. This is not that at all. Literally the best Mexican food I've had in my whole life.
google avatar

Daniel P.

Yelp
This place is as home made as Mexican food gets. This place is about real excellent home made flavor. Their specialty are a sandwich called Cemitas. They're huge and feel of great flavor. I favor the carne Asada Cemitas. They come loaded with queso fresco ( fresh Mexican cheese) and loads of avacado. I've also had the tacos and they are very plain. The meat is always full of flavor so that keeps me coming back. This place lacks aesthetics, but serves real home made flavors that only my Mexican born mom seems to be able to conjour up. Good place for simple Mexican food.
google avatar

Lilia G.

Yelp
The food here is extremely authentic to central Mexico. It is a bit pricey but well worth it if you're looking for authentic cuisine. There's just one thing I wanted to comment on after reading prior reviews. The cheese they use is authentically Mexican. Some people refer to it as flavorless but I'm assuming these people are used to processed and aged cheeses (I love those too). Mexicans mainly use freshly made cheeses and it is more of a garnish and something to counteract the spiciness of the food rather than the main attraction of the meal. That said, if you love authentic cooking this is the place to go for tortas. If you prefer Mexican chain restaurants with loads of cheddar cheese, this is not for you.
google avatar

Scott V.

Yelp
I've only had the Cemitas de Pollo Asado and the Cemitas Carne Asada. The bread is crispy and flavorful, Avocado and Queso Fresco fresh, and the protein perfectly cooked. Huge sandwich for the price. Go here today!
google avatar

Annabel M.

Yelp
Food is always delicious. Authentic Mexican food from Puebla I love it. I've ordered cemitas which are delicious they have fresh authentic bread for it which is a plus. I've had their shrimp soup which is very tasty good for cold weather. I highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Jaime Y.

Yelp
Nope. I guess I got the wrong thing here. The service was bad, and my nachos had really bad almost fake cheese.
google avatar

Noriko A.

Yelp
I come here for sautéed octopus plate, tostada de pata (spicy and crunchy beef tendon) and cactus steak plate that I can't get at other places. Yes, they have raised the price over the years as someone mentioned, however, I appreciate the fact that they don't sacrifice the quality of the food they serve. Everything is consistently well prepared and portions are huge. They also have a chicken soup with pasta in a light broth that is perfect when you are sick. Nice to have a place like this close to my work.
google avatar

Lisa S.

Yelp
The grilled chicken was moist and super good. i loved it so much that I got one to go too for lunch the next day.
google avatar

Nicole O.

Yelp
Grilled chicken cemitas is a HUGE sandwich filled with tasty chicken, tons of real mexican cheese, and avocado. So so good. Easily feeds two.

Candance M.

Yelp
Good food. Quick service. Will definitely be back. I had tacos carne asado con rojas y frijoles on the side
google avatar

Peter M.

Yelp
Not sure what a cemitas was until I saw it on the food network. Then I yelped mexican food and this place came up. They are soooooo good. Recommended it BIG TIME!!
