The 17 Best Tacos in the Oakland, Richmond, and the East Bay | Eater SF

"Four days a week, Elvira Varela props open the white iron gate next to her garage to welcome droves of diners. In her compact, tree-lined backyard, she’s created a haven of Jalisco-style specialties. Think saucy tortas ahogadas, airy tostadas raspadas, and hearty pozole. But the tacos dorados are not to be missed. Choose your filling — the carne deshebrada and rajas con queso are favorites — and they’ll bring you a plate of expertly crisped tacos topped with shredded cabbage and swimming in a classic thin, mild tomato salsa." - Lena Park

This place is so tasty! I’ve been meaning to drop in for some time, finally got around to it and now I’m kicking myself for not getting here sooner. Don’t be me. We tried a tostada raspada, tacos dorados, pozole, a sope, and a couple tamales. Everything was fantastic, but absolutely do not skip the tostada! We got it with chicken, highly recommend. The sauce they pour on it is just so delicious. Honestly we’d order everything again, there were no misses. And if they happen to have tamales, the chicken w green mole was so delicious, fluffy and expertly seasoned.

Love the food here. I’ve almost given up finding good tacos in the Bay Area, but the tacos dorados were delicious! So crunchy and fresh. The little setup in the backyard was very cute. The prices were incredibly reasonable for how well we ate. Looking forward to coming back!

Great find! I wish I lived closer! If you know cuisine from Guadalajara /Jalisco you will be so glad you found this place! The food is great. This is the first time ever that I ordered a torta ahogada in the States. Usually at other restaurants they have very soggy bread, but at Elviras they have the actual bread you are supposed to use - a sour baguette-Ish which is bolillo salado! Their spicy salsa is great! Then the Tostadas are so good. Probably my favorite of them all. The tacos are great! My favorite being the papa (potato) tacos. The pozole was also good The owners as very welcoming and attentive! The actual place is small but so worth the wait. Just make sure you arrive early because they tend to sell out. If you are used to Americanized Mexican food this will be a change for you. This authentic food/flavors from Jalisco!

A gem of a dining space in the Fruitvale area. They offer some unique dishes that you won’t find elsewhere. Nothing was mind blowing, but everything was as delicious. Love the salsas and onion assortment that they serve on the side.

Google
Wow. Amazing Mexican food in a comfy setting. Look for the sign on the sidewalk, it's in a backyard. We got almost one of everything on the menu, it was all delicious. Great salsa picante.

Google

Yelp
Tacos dorado are exceptional. Highly recommend. Parking is a bit difficult but other than that everything is great. Friendly staff and delicious food.

Yelp
Great restaurant run by the nicest people. Excellent tacos dorados, really light and crispy. Both the chicken and the rajas con papas fillings were great. The pozole was also really good, light flavorful broth, tender pozole. Their signature tostada raspada was also quite good.

Yelp
The food is good. Honestly it's missing the kick I want. I loved the tostada raspada. Everything else is good. The sopes are a bit hard, should be a little more thicker and less time in the fryer (in my opinion). Customer service is really good, so friendly and welcoming.

Yelp
From the New York Times: "Air snapping in half sounds like an imagined achievement of atmospheric physics, but it occurs when biting into this impossibly thin, crackling tostada raspada. The owner, Elvira Varela, gets the corn directly from Zapotlanejo, Jalisco in Mexico, transforming the bounty into foot-long toboggans slathered with flavorful beans and topped with a shower of cabbage and a smattering of queso fresco. The dish doubles as the best home-cooked meal of the year as well, given that Ms. Varela delivers all of this culinary sorcery directly from her home patio."
