Attended the Mirage for D.L. Hughley comedy show last night. My husband and I decided to stop at this bar for a drink and a app before attending the show. The bar was quite crowded. We made our way to an empty spot at the bar. there was only one seat available so my husband had me sit down while he stood waiting to order our drinks. While we were waiting , approximately, 3-5 min later an caucasian woman approached the bar and stood beside my husband.
The bartender, Arnold, approach the area where we were, so my husband caught his attention and asked him if he could order drinks. The bartender, Arnold, without even responding nor acknowledging my husband looked past him and asked the caucasian woman standing beside him if she was first in line. "Ma am were you in line first ". We were all shocked , even the caucasian women was shocked. She looked just as surprised as we were. Why he just assumed the white patron was there first is a mystery to me and instead of asking my husband if he was first, he chose to looked past home to the white patron. Although, My husband was the one originally speaking to him, he looked beyond him and directed the question to the lady.
The lady was shocked, she stated quickly "No", that we were first. I witnessed first hand white privileged although she chose not to excise this white privileged, what if she had? It was a very offensive and rude racist act of the of the bartender.
The white patron was shocked as well. She looked apologetically at my husband and stated shocked , " I don't know why he asked me if I was first. I don't know why he did that". My husband smiled and explained that was just what being a black man in this society goes thru on a daily basic.
