On the Grid : Central Market Hall

"Right next to Liberty Bridge, Central Market Hall has been serving hungry Hungarians since 1897 – at the time, produce was arriving through a canal connecting the Danube and the building. Instead of canals, it is structured around three main aisles today – when viewing from the main entrance, delicacies, rare veggies and tourist traps are on the right side, while the other two aisles are full of regular food market goods (for regular prices). "Great Market Hall The Great Market Hall in Budapest should be any visitors first stop in order to get acquainted to the people, goods and grub of Hungary. The market is one of those strange places that caters to both locals and tourists alike without losing its authentic appeal. Under one roof you can by meats and sausages, Royal Tokaji wine, paprika, hot Hungarian favorites, such as Goulash, an assortment of pickled vegetables and fresh produce. The upper floor has small eateries, where you can sample a variety of Hungarian favorites for very little money. By Dijedal"

The Central Market Hall in Budapest is a wonderful and impressive place to visit, especially if you enjoy exploring local culture and architecture. The building itself is beautiful, large, and full of energy. It's a great stop for sightseeing and getting a sense of the city's atmosphere. The ground floor is filled with stalls offering fruits, vegetables, meats, spices, and other traditional Hungarian goods. The upper floor is where you’ll find souvenirs, textiles, and food stands. While it’s visually interesting and worth walking through, many of the items for sale are mass-produced and often made in China. Prices are generally higher than what you’d pay elsewhere for the same products, so it's not the best place for shopping. There are also several food stalls where you can try local dishes like goulash or lángos. The food looks tasty and is likely to be good, but again, the market is very tourist-oriented, and the prices reflect that. Overall, the Central Market is definitely worth a visit for its charm and variety, but more as a cultural stop than a shopping destination. Four stars for the experience and atmosphere, minus one for the commercial and overpriced feel.

One of Europe's great market halls. Very touristy - especially the food areas - but lots of great souvenirs and local goods to sample. The market is more targeted to tourists these days than locals, but it's still a must see when visiting Budapest...

Such a cool experience, it was very busy but expected as we went on a Saturday! But still managed to move around easily and experience some good food and a light bit of shopping. Definitely recommend going earlier as it can get quite hot in there!

It is more of a tourist attraction than a market but they do sell to some locals also. My travel companions bought some pastries that didn't look all that good but they wanted as they'd heard it was the thing to eat in Budapest. To me, the architecture was the most interesting element. The shops were colorful and interesting too.

It is fun. But this day was HOT. The vendors are low key. They do not push and will explain if asked. It is a neat location with a subfloor of meat that is open on weekdays. Better prices are to the back.

A great place to experience a taste of Hungary for tourists. You’ll find the popular spice paprika along with strudel, goulash, and sausages. There are souvenirs and food places upstairs. I had both the sour cherry and apple strudel which weren’t too sweet and the right amount of pastry. Checkout the photo for the place that sells the best strudel. The downside is that prices are on the high side.

The building itself is beautiful, with its grand iron structure and colorful roof tiles. Inside, you’ll find fresh produce, meats, spices, and lots of local specialties. The upper floor offers traditional Hungarian street food and souvenirs. It’s a great place to try lángos or buy paprika to take home. Busy, lively, and full of local flavor

Absolutely amazing! Great food, plenty of shops, and kind vendors. I would recommend stopping in as a local or tourist and shopping around!
