How to Help Fight Food Insecurity in D.C. | Eater DC

"A 135-year-old Christian nonprofit operating multiple D.C. locations including an emergency shelter that offers food distribution; while in-person volunteer events are suspended, the mission accepts online donations and suggests 'volunteer in place' activities like cooking soups or stews, and ran a Thanksgiving food drive collecting items through November 22." - Tierney Plumb

Stayed here before. Some of the chaplains are cool. The food "decent" but honestly I was thinking about going back to prison. Less arbitrary rules and more freedom the Union Mission

I was homeless in Washington, D.C. between May 17, 2023 and October 4, 2023. This was the only homeless shelter I could find or I knew of in the +1 (202) area code. Several occasions they assisted me with lunch or dinner. One time I attempted to become a resident of the shelter. IMO I thought the shelter was changing management because I was trying to find shelter.

Christ people whom provide a very spiritual experience through giving shelter to Brothers yet, Sisters as a Men’s Sanctuary. Not turning anyone away from hearing the word & seeing it be applied. Operating on the spirit to whomever in need. When I found myself in cluster. Nature free spiritly laid a path & I received exactly what was needed. Great Brothers & Sisters Thank You 🦊

Everything is relative. So being here was definitely better than being out on the street. The condition is fair, staff cool, people vary from normal to mentally ill, some extreme cases. Food is better than none but not the best. Beds are comfortable, open dorms, shower curtains dirty. It's just a lack of responsibility. A lot of homeless men have lost their home training.

I mean ... If you have no Control over your life and your a drug addict and you want to be In jail with little freedom and want the same people to force God in your life than this place is for you . You MUST attend their church service 2 times a day. Or AA meeting and 1 church service and/or if your out of money and have no hope because you might rob or kill somebody .. Than this place might save you . Other than than that . I rather live on the street . I stayed here for 3 days and left . I can do bad all myself . YOU BEEN WARNED... I wish somebody told me before I went . They will also take pictures of you for their personal gain for their marketing purpose . They also take tides and offering at the end of their church service . I left in 3 days and rather sleep in the STREET. Its next to bein in jail . If you ever been locked up ... You will be reminded what it feels like... How does anybody like it here ? CHECK OUT ADAMS PLACE IF YOU NEED SHELTER! Wayyyyy better if you want to feel like a human and not a DOG and value any sort of freedom. This place was waste of time to me . Check in at 3pm and wait in a waiting room to 5pm for dinner and shower time . IM NEVER EVER going back ...NEVER ..not unless I been told I'm dying or something ... Even still I wouldn't want to waste last days here . They have the public donating to them ... Why are they taking tides and offering from people who stay here ????

Yelp
On Saturday morning, I attended a volunteer event with the DC Spartans. We were able to serve lunch to the residents of Central Union Mission. Mark provided us with a lot of background information for the organization as well as other opportunities of how we xan volunteer. All the staff were friendly and welcoming and the guests were appreciate of us volunteering our time. This was my second time volunteering here and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Yelp
Least we forget the great need of people in all our splendor? I say we shall not! We whom have what the lord has blessed us with, Can we not bless the lives of our brothers and sisters so that they too will see Gods mercy? To give to those who cannot repay but with thanks ? Jesus says that to "give to the least of us is giving to Him" To give to the one that Died for our sins is truly spectacular if you ask me !

Yelp
I donated clothing to the Mission at its old location on 14th St.--a few blocks from my home--for nearly 30 years. I've continued to do this at their new location in NOMA. The new facility is a drastic improvement in quality for their customers--I was stunned at the level of improvement.
