Your Guide to a Seattle St. Patrick’s Day | Eater

"An underground, red-lit lounge with a tiki-cum-bordello aesthetic that has served Capitol Hill since 1998, paired with its sister Bimbo’s Bitchin’ Burrito Kitchen. Known for killer nachos, hefty burritos, and seriously strong drinks, it’s the kind of sweaty, crowded spot where nights unexpectedly end—perfect for those who don’t mind losing a bit of personal space for lively St. Paddy’s Day fun." - Vox Creative

During my recent trip to Seattle, I discovered this establishment while seeking a venue for relaxation, engaging conversation, and quality beverages. I encountered one of the most exceptional bartenders I've ever met, who provided excellent conversation and demonstrated extensive knowledge of the local area. Should I return to Seattle, I anticipate revisiting and hope to find her there. Birdy, your service was outstanding.

Abhiram Ravi

Google
Nice lounge with good vibes. Can get very crowded which adds to making it a fun place. The drinks seemed quite diluted and lacked the kick expected. The place also doesn't have an AC so it can get toasty. It also sucked that Bimbos kitchen was closed so there were no food options.

Google
It was a very fun time here and JD was a WONDERFUL. He had a happy smile and makes the best drinks. The prices are great. The bar is comfortable. If I lived here I would come here every single day. I would vote for JD for president.

If you want a good dive bar in Seattle where you can drink with locals: this is the place. The shots are deep—I can trace numerous hangovers directly to the tequila. The smoking alley, the vending machine of cigarettes and matches, and the photobooth are all very charming. I recommend the upstairs bathroom over the downstairs

Google
JP was the best. I asked for sauces with my taco, and boy did he. So nice. Birdie made an excellent drink and contributed to the amazing atmosphere ❤️

Please don't let the signs in the front fool you they are for Trump. My husband walked in at around 11pm it was slow. My husband went I. First he's 6'6 tall blk man he asked if it was open and serving they said yes so he went to get me blk wm 5'3 an wearing all blk sweater as soon as we got thru the do the same guy steps in front of us and says that they are closing this is the same man that told my husband they we open 30 second prior to coming to get me out the car .I was not loud I was not biligerent I was not disturbing or disrespectful I was confused by his words but I instantly knew it was the color of my brown skin they assumed I was to dark to be in the establishment the two females white bar tenders tried to say there not like that but they couldn't explain why they were refusing to serve me an my husband now that they know he was married to a blk woman I was hurt an humiliated I would say if you are black american or african american this is not the bar for you they are racist an hurtful I went home thinking what did I do wrong no one should feel that way ever. I'm sad by the way I was treated with my husband. I will never come back, and I would not recommend any black person to go here, especially black women. They don't like you here is what an how they treat me so beware an stay far away. I'll never return people of color. This is not the place for us

Google
Was bar hopping in cap hill when I saw a queue to enter and asked someone if it's a good place to hop. I'm glad I did. Loved the vibe, had Moscow mule which was strong, though not the best one you'll have. Loved the energy around me.

Google
I recently visited your establishment and was deeply disturbed to find a statue of Saint Mary inside the bar. This placement is highly inappropriate and offensive to those who hold religious beliefs. A bar is not a suitable location for such a sacred symbol. I urge you to reconsider and remove the statue from this setting out of respect for the sanctity of religious symbols. Thank you for your understanding and prompt attention to this matter.

Yelp
I came here for Henry, he isn't just bartender--he's the vibe architect of Cha Cha Lounge. He's the best. His curated, eclectic hip hop playlists are pure alchemy--underground beats you didn't even know existed, but your body and soul instantly recognize and crave. Every track feels like it's rewiring your DNA for the magic of the night . You can talk to him about any movie, any game, and he'll drop insights like you've known each other for years. He knows Seattle in his bones and is a walking encyclopedia of the city's off-line media revolution. The karaoke host here is top-tier people really cut loose and have a blast. Now if they'd just bring back Punk Rock Movie Night, it'd be perfect."

Yelp
I came here on a Friday night with friends. I was expecting it to be busy but was actually pretty laid back. The security at the front checking IDs was a bit dismissive. The drinks weren't all that- I ordered a Paloma and it had no flavor luckily it came with lime.
google avatar

Autumn d.

Yelp
Cha cha has a great atmosphere, with a dark basement that is bustling. This place is very busy on the weekends. Bartends are fast and take your orders quickly. The drinks are what you'd expect from a dive bar. Cheap and full of alcohol.

Alyson C.

Yelp
Your bouncers arn't being professional especially on live TickTock. Not correctly doing there job as well as no pat downs or bag checks. Randomly saying this person is aloud in and not the other. Your bouncer is definitely on some form of drug. Shouldn't have bouncers who don't take there job seriously. Will definitely report.

Bree B.

Yelp
My favorite bar in Seattle . It's been open for like 15+ years now! Punk bar vibes which means you losers ordering mai tai can fuck right off
google avatar

Marlene P.

Yelp
Extremely busy to the point you can't move around but Photo Booth was so cute and the pure reason I went lol.
google avatar

Pratima M.

Yelp
A cute little lounge right in the heart of Cap Hill, around the corner from Neumos. I stopped by on Friday night with some friends and it was a really nice vibe to start the night -- they have an upstairs bar as well as a deceptively large downstairs lounge, complete with red lights and a glittery disco ball. I loved that it wasn't TOO loud and you could still have a conversation when sitting in the booth! We had to wait a little to grab a table, but there were still tons of pockets to stand as well. I got one of their Deep Eddy Ice Team slushy drinks and it was surprisingly delicious -- would highly recommend if you're looking for something to slowly sip on. The music was great and the decor was fun. I would totally come back here!
google avatar

Belldandy O.

Yelp
If you like bars/lounges that are dark and most likely wet, this is the place to be. I don't go to bars/lounges often, but it was an overall a good experience here.
google avatar

Jarid A.

Yelp
Would not recommend to any locals in Seattle. Terrible customer service and such rude staff. See photo: This bouncer was making so many gay slurs and insulting "behind the back" of customers
google avatar

Sophia C.

Yelp
I've come here a couple times before and never had a bad time but the experience I had this past Saturday evening was 100% unacceptable. I ordered an AMF (which was terribly made but that's a different issue) and once I was about halfway done with my drink, I picked up what I thought was a large piece of ice only to realize it was a large piece of BROKEN GLASS. Such a MAJOR SAFETY HAZARD & COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE. I could have been drinking little shards of glass (and honestly, probably did) and all the bartender could say was "oh that's bad." She took the drink back and offered us 2 shots as if that was going to make anything better. I should have taken a picture of my drink for reference... I could not believe it. Would not come back after my most recent experience. Not only should the situation have been handled better, the bartender brushed us off so nonchalantly for someone that put BROKEN GLASS in my drink. DO NOT come here unless you want to worry about literal safety hazards potentially occurring.
google avatar

Yelp
The food is bar food & not bad at all. Service, is decent for the establishment and ambiance is interesting with a big area for people to dance but no one dances & an outside area where most of "the fun" is happening. This place isn't half bad.
google avatar

Hannah T.

Yelp
Cha cha lounge is always a go-to me and my friends! We love the drinks and the ambiance is the best. I love the style and overall vibe there. It's a plus thag the staff is always super nice too!

Serena P.

Yelp
Rude staff, person with the red mullet Mohawk was rude and short with every little remark. We were told at the door that the "downstairs" area was closed, my whole group was very confused because we didn't know what that meant. We aren't from Seattle we were just visiting for a concert. When I tried to tell him "idk what that means I'm not from here" he just said "cool". Like? Okay you can't explain? If I knew what was downstairs maybe I would have come back again next time to check it out? Idk It was just Very awkward and overall a horrible experience.

Colten T.

Yelp
service and drinks were fine, the building is very poorly maintained. there were several pipes spewing water into the seating area

Yelp
We had such a blast at cha cha's. With a lot of bars and businesses closed down permanently due to Covid that it has become difficult to find a place just for a drink. Everywhere was full of capacity when we would try to enter. Some places didn't even call us back after we left our names down on the waitlist. It was very frustrating. A bouncer from another bar told us about cha cha's so we headed over there. It was pretty empty when we came in but soon got very busy. We lucked out! Bartender was so nice and took great care of us. We also got the nachos while having many rounds of drinks. It was a decent size very filling. We were satisfied. This place is your typical dive bar so the atmosphere here was chill and laid back. We'll definitely be coming back if we are in the area again.
google avatar

Sarah M.

Yelp
Had a good time here, got a table in the corner with the pinball machines and buck hunter. It was nice to have the area to ourselves and play rounds and rounds games, slightly tucked away from the madness. It was pretty packed and I wouldn't want to be standing in the middle of it all like many people were doing. $15 Ranier pitcher and $60 for 6 tequila shots + their tropical tequila drink with redbull.
google avatar

Isobel P.

Yelp
This was the spot for anyone who went to Seattle U! Just down the street, Cha Cha's is a familiar favorite. My friend and I went for a recent visit and it hasn't changed a bit! Tiki decorations, mood lighting, etc. She was hoping they still had their $2 beer Wednesdays (or a similar deal) but they did not. They did have a list of $10 margaritas, which we both took advantage of. We each got a pineapple margarita and then a round of beers after (a Guava Sour for me; Tecate for her!) and everything was great. Bartender was friendly and helpful. The place was nearly empty on a Wednesday night at 7:45, but be ready for it to be packed on the weekends later.

Vanessa P.

Yelp
The music was so good! We made a stop here on our DIY cocktail tour and loved looking at all the funny decor.

Yelp
This place is what the inside of my soul looks like. I absolutely love it! I bought a shirt from a vending machine!
google avatar

Ishan A.

Yelp
Best place ever. I mean seriously. She is difficult to find and only the deserving will stumble on her by chance. She is red, wears wild ornaments, some say she got crazy eyes but once you know her well, you may only smile. Even after so many meetings, I find something new to love about her everytime, so much so that I have never remembered a single night, where we drank our first before nine. Give it a try but know you have been warned; you will fall in love and fall hard. She will not be yours but you can find joy in sharing.

Gabi N.

Yelp
My friend got a vending machine item and it got stuck it's very rude and unfortunate on their birthday too. :(
google avatar

Joseph L.

Yelp
Had a decent time there with friends, up until at last call I watched the bartender scoop ice from the well using the glass she made my drink in. Not only is this unsanitary, but also a HUGE health hazard, because glass can chip and leave tiny shards in the well, which can get into someone's drink. Will only be ordering bottled/canned drinks from there. DO NOT SCOOP ICE WITH GLASS!

Avery J.

Yelp
blonde girl w/ ponytail who works there left the bathroom twice without flushing or washing hands

Keila B.

Yelp
atmosphere is very chill and i love the music but their film photobooth no longer prints on real film which is a bummer. came around april of 2023 and it was still a true analog machine.

Nicole K.

Yelp
worst bar service ever. the person with the pink hair is so mean and rude. the door guy who is African American is extremely rude. it seems like they like to be little people who come in. very much not the safe space they claim to be
google avatar

Dawn H.

Yelp
Yeah, after a night of bar/club hopping in Capital Hill, and getting full of Jizz at Unicorn, this might very well end up being your last stop for the evening. It seems to be a CH staple where regulars go to get their groove on. I havent seen such enthustaic dancing in well...never. Lol! Very infectious; I couldn't help but go join in on the action...embarrassing my husband as usual. A local B1 dimly lit bar with cool decor, cheapish drinks, cool tunes, and super friendly folks-very diverse crowd. So, stop in and "dance your ass ass off!"
google avatar

Trisha F.

Yelp
Karaoke is for bars that suck, Cha Cha. You don't need that to be awesome, lovely bar of mine. Service really blew here 10:28 pm 6/25, too. I've seen much friendlier and quick service during packed nights. My faith is shaken! **I recently discovered that karaoke is NOT being done every Monday night, just once every few weeks on Monday. I will research before I plan on going-- as for now, avoid Monday July 2.
google avatar

Willy M.

Yelp
Came here to grab a drink with a friend when another bar up the street was way too crowded. Came here late afternoon, early evening and it was a nice spot to rev up the drinking engines. Wasn't crowded at all, bartender was nice & friendly. Its downstairs from Bimbos and music was pretty good playing Metallica etc. I love the Lucha Libre/Luchadores art decor the best! Cracks me up! If you like hanging out in a basement vibe, dimly lit place with interesting, quirky decor....this is your place.

Yelp
Food/drinks: $3 FOR A PINT OF BEER. Will definitely be a memorable bar in terms of how cheap the beer is (considering it wasn't even happy hour). We ordered nachos to snack on. The cheese was weird and was hardened by the time we got them... Ambience/Theme: Masked wrestler themed on the top floor. Apparently pink/red on the bottom (didn't get a chance to go down) Service: Sucked. Waited at the bar for a hot minute to ask for a menu/drink and the bar tender wouldn't even look at me. He just continued to talk to his friends across the counter. Docking a star for making me feel shitty ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ TLDR; you get what you pay for here. Cheap beer, cheap food and cheap service. Probably won't be coming back.
google avatar

Grace Y.

Yelp
Drinks were strong and $10 not bad but they never answer their phone and charged my friend's and I card TWICE which I'm very confused about. Bring cash don't risk using your card
google avatar

Yelp
I come here with a group of friends on Tuesday for the Trivia Tuesdays. It's a fun bar with friendly staff. Tuesday = $2 Tall Boys (Tecate). Trivia is at 8pm, but you need to come a bit earlier to get a table. There's no entry fee - but there are plenty of prizes!!! Uusally maybe 10ish teams compete (?). 1st place = $50 gift card to Cha Chas, 2nd = $25 gift card to Cha Chas, 3rd = choose a category for the next week, 2nd to last = $5 gift card to Cha Chas. There are also funny little prizes for last place and the funniest team name. The format of trivia here is a bit different than most - the categories have almost nothing to do with the questions, and there's also a flash round to win a drink token based on today's news. We never miss trivia here, and it's a fun venue. Cha Cha's is always appropriately decorated for whatever season it is. Definitely a chill/casual bar to just hang out at. It's not too loud, which is also nice.

Mandy M.

Yelp
Do not take your chances going here. Was drugged and practically carried out of the bar by guys I did not know and not a single staff member did or said anything to ensure my safety. I've heard similar stories and considering the only drink I did not by for myself I got at the bar, I would venture to guess that the bartender saw what this guy did and didn't do anything to stop it. Recently went back and nothing has changed. Staff is rude and has an attitude for no reason. Only saving grace was a nice group of girls who took me in for the night and helped me to relive the night I was drugged and healed me. Will never be returning.

Yelp
Y'all security last night told my friend on her 21st birthday it was fake when it wasn't. He called us liars and told us to get the fuck out. I've heard this has happened to others, and it was rude as fuck and annoying.
google avatar

Tajnecka P.

Yelp
I went here last night for my 21st birthday and the door man kept examining my ID and said it was a fake when it's not a fake ID. I've used this ID for everything else and it was fine and he even called me and my friend a lair and told us to get the fuck out. I'm very not pleased what he did. Definitely not a place to go!
google avatar

Tiffany M.

Yelp
2 stars because the environment and all the decor was really nice. Ordered two of their slushie drinks for $8 each. One for me and my friend. I gave the bartender two cards and told him to charge the drinks separately. Charged my friend $8. Checked my account today and it has been charged $18. I don't recall $18 being on the receipt when I signed it or else I would've said something. All in all, they should pay attention and listen to customers. I left them a message earlier to resolve this issue. Haven't heard back yet. Edit: They called back. Did notice my card was overcharged and refunded my money ASAP. Thank you
google avatar

Mary N.

Yelp
I liked the look of the place. The staff was very friendly. The bar section the lighting is red. The light in the restrooms are also red, could use better lighting in the restroom other then red. unfortunatly the music was not the vibe that I would have expected from the name of the place. They played oldies and I expected hispanic/latin music. The drinks could have been better. I will definitly give them another chance.
google avatar

Patrick S.

Yelp
Is hating this place part of the hipster ethos to be too cool for a place? Is wearing a t-shirt that looks like it's from the 70's ironic because it's not the 70's anymore, or ironic because you spent $45 on it? The first time I went here, around 2001, my friend and I were cracking up at the fact that every single guy in the place (besides us) was trying desperately to look like Beck. The bartenders have an attitude! Case in point, this exchange between a patron and a bartender: Patron: "What kind of beer do you have?" Bartender: (with a scoff) "Mexican beer". (said in a tone as if to say "you didn't know that?"). I only go here when a friend insists on dragging me here. I really do hate it, and it's not because I'm supposed to. It's just a dumb place.
google avatar

Inna B.

Yelp
I tried to see what my friends love so much about the Cha Cha, but... sadly... I still don't get it. I've been there when it was slow and on a night where it was standing room only. I like how red it is and all the craziness that's in there. Beyond that.... it really must be the people.... and being drunk.... and dancing? Sadly there was not much going on there last time I went. The music was some kind of metal-ish rock and when my friend asked them to change to faster/dance-friendly music, they just switched to faster metal-ish rock. We were amused head-banging in our booth for a moment and then decided it was time to take off. Experience w/ the Bar: The bartender had cool super-long dreadlocks.... and was working REAL slowly. A couple of my friends ordered red bull & vodkas and learned that they had to tell him "no ice" if they didn't want a tall glass full of ice (and a bit more ice) with a splash of red bull & vodka. Thankfully he was working slowly enough that they got a chance to do that. I can't believe that guy was trying to do that and still charge them about $6 for each drink! I might be back again with my friends, but I'd never suggest it and I'd rather go elsewhere. Maybe seriously pre-funking elsewhere would help me like this place much more? I don't know. Maybe I'll try it next time.
google avatar

Griffin C.

Yelp
I miss Cha Cha's so much! The atmosphere is so fun and unique. Definitely the spot to take out of town guests! Hope to see them open back up again soon!

Becca P.

Yelp
Low key and cozy. Good happy hour and good service. The lighting and decor here were really cool. I'd go back!
google avatar

Julian G.

Yelp
Mind you, im far from a fan of dive bars. But i understand the appeal - non pretentious, friendly staff who remember your name, inexpensive drinks, greasy but comforting food and tucked away so hardly busy. I imagine in some alternate universe the Cha Cha is one of those place. However some time ago this place was deemed by the local Seattle Hipster crowd as some sort of holy land. The owners swiftly (and wisely) caught wind, so everything that it was striving to be, got dumped down the drain... Prices hiked up, service down the tubes, food in need of a health inspection, you get the picture.
google avatar

Katya L.

Yelp
I feel like a crochety old fogey (damn hipsters, geroof my lawn!) but I just do not enjoy the Cha Cha. Do I have to hand in my 'cool young person' card and move to Ravenna now? It's nothing against the bar in general, although it does tend to be sticky. Like, really sticky, all over. But whenever I come here, it's packed, it's loud, there's nowhere to sit (or stand, half the time) the bar is three-deep and the drinks are weak. Maybe I liked jostling the crowds at packed Capitol Hill bars when I was 21, but not anymore. The Cha Cha doesn't have anything special going for it that would entice me to return.
google avatar

Swapnil C.

Yelp
My favourite local bar. Just love the lights in here. Don't get disappointed by the look of the bar from outside. There is a level down in the bar and that's where the real character of the bar emerges. I have had quesadillas here at times and have loved it but I go here mostly on my night out for drinks. My favourite thing about this bar is the red lighting inside.
google avatar

Evanka T.

Yelp
Pro-tip: never get into a conversation with a drunk dude at the end of the night. I was told by a very rude man that my bangs weren't cool. I feel very unsupported in my hair lifestyle. If I want to hide my forehead, I damn well should be able to and not be judged for it. Fire margaritas tho. And the food I can always get behind. Also wildest smoking corner and everyone loves it. The conversations are worth the cancer you'll inevitably get later in life. Always an adventure when you get to go to this place.
google avatar

Taylor A.

Yelp
I usually like this place because it is a very unique spot. I have been going here for 7 years now. The front door person can be rude but that's fine. What was not fine and why I am giving this place a 1 star is because of one of the staff. She has dirty blonde hair and was wearing a beanie last night. I was waiting for the bathroom on the top floor. She was in line behind me. I went into the restroom and it was HORRIBLY DIRTY! That's fine, most bars are like this. She goes in after me. She later comes after me and accuses me of puking in the restroom. There was no visible sign of puke when I was in there so I looked at her confused and told her she was mistaken. She wouldn't let it go and demanded me to confess. I kept telling her it wasn't me and then she looked at me and said I was stumbling out the bathroom. Lady, I almost slipped in YOUR bathroom because there was water and piss everywhere. And then she called me drunk and cut me off. I only had one single drink that whole day. I was only at that bar for 30 min. That's fine because I was not going to give them any more of my money after all that harassment. I don't appreciate being accused of something I never did. Given that they have HORRIBLE "CUSTOMER SERVICE" I would say this place is a fail. I'm 28 and know how to handle my alcohol. Never giving them my money ever again.
google avatar

Samantha G.

Yelp
I had no idea they served Hamm's beer in a can here! It brought back memories of when my dad used to work for the Olympia Brewing Company and we would have stacks of Hamm's, PBR and Olympia beer lined up against the garage wall. Ok but anyways, Cha Cha lounge was a pretty cool place to hang out at. My friends and I were able to get our drinks quickly. Seats are limited so we just hung around the bar until a table was open. There was a good mix of people that night and I wish I could have mingled more with others that night. They also have a photobooth here but I will never attempt to use one if I'm wearing heels again. PAINFUL.

Yelp
Probably one of the most popular bars in Cap Hill. Guaranteed you'll have to wait 10 minutes outside, walk through a hundred people to get to a bar and avoid eye contact with someone you know but don't really want to talk to, and then wait another 10 minutes while the bartender finally gets through the queue of 20 people waiting ahead of you at the bar and hands you your drink. The people that come here are social (sometimes overtly--personal space plz) and will most likely chat you up if you're awkwardly not paying attention to whatever your friends are talking about and checking your phone instead. Definitely no short supply of characters here; and the booze will definitely help with that. Nonetheless, it's a fun space and a Cap Hilll classic in my opinion. I stopped by on New Year's Eve once with some friends, and everyone was having a blast, and the bar even passed around those little tiny confetti poppers! Ah, memories :) Oh btw, it's hot and humid as hell in here. Ditch the jacket.

Yelp
Asked this new (I've never seen him before) bartender if I can order food from him. He says no. Uh........wtf? While sitting at a booth, I flag down a server and friends and I order burritos. A bit later, they arrived cold. And he forgot to add sour cream/guacamole. No bueno. Whatever. I still love this place, but I'll probably never order the burrito again. Nachos! In the lower outdoor section, we met the designer of the wall: PigBom. Check it out!

Yelp
You'll find Cha Cha in the downstairs basement of Bimbo's Cantina. It's consistently hot, sweaty, and full on weekend nights. The music is grungy, the entire place is a pinkish red color, and the bar is relatively tiki themed. If you find yourself jonesing for a smoke or some air, you can head down past the bathroom and down the hallway, where you'll find a small outdoor space to hangout in. We usually only come here for quick late night shots and drinks, and we rarely ever stay for too long. If I recall, they do have decent deals on beer (specifically Tecate) on weekend nights, which works as a great chaser to any shot. Even though in some ways Cha Cha is not my style, it definitely more than gets the job done.
