Chaat Bhavan - Review - Mountain View - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"While it’s true that the Mountain View location of Chaat Bhavan would be a perfect place to take your favorite vegetarian and/or gluten-free dining companions, that’s hardly the biggest reason to go. This Indian restaurant has expertly prepared chaat, a comprehensive list of fresh breads (our favorites are the puffy deep-fried spinach poori and the thyme-chili naan), and delicious curries. It’s a casual restaurant, but the space is quite vibrant, with white tablecloths on every table and wall sculptures lit with multicolored LED lights. The menu is big, so if you can’t make up your mind, opt for one of the thalis, which includes bread, rice, dal, vegetables, dessert, and a beverage." - Gabi Moskowitz

Chaat Bhavan serves up a colorful mix of North Indian street food and classic dishes. The chole bhature is hearty and flavorful, while the pav bhaji is rich and buttery. Paneer tacos offer a fun fusion twist, and the chat basket burst with tangy, crunchy goodness. A great spot for variety and bold Indian flavors.

This is our go-to place for North Indian food. Since our family is vegetarian, we appreciate the wide variety of options available here. The kids especially love the Signature Malai Paneer, which is mild and flavorful. We also enjoy the Dum Aloo, and their bread selection—including Tandoori Roti, Naan, and Ajwain Paratha—is consistently good. Their Chinese Bhel is a tasty snack worth trying as well. We didn’t enjoy the taste of pav bhaji as much. Service is quick, and the ambience is pleasant—definitely a notch above the Fremont and Sunnyvale branches, thanks to the newer setup. Highly recommended!

Overall the food is homely. Clean and good ambiance. North Indian take on most dishes. Amazing quantity for the price. We ended up packing some food for home. Paneer was soft and fluffy. Oil and ghee is balanced, not too high. Will visit again to try out some other dishes. The only caveat is if you are used to Mumbai style street food, you may be used to a stronger flavor profile.

Google
As usual it’s very welcoming and tasty food. I liked daal makhni and kacchi keri drink What I don’t like is that they had chur chur parantha with dal makhni in specials but it’s not chur chur as I wud expect. Instead it was really thin parantha sliced into 4 parts. Would highly suggest if you can do some justice with chur chur parantha since it was $17.99 combo I don’t feel it was worth the money.

Excellent place, visited the Mountain View Location. The menu was superb, fresh and innovative ad compared to other regular Indian restaurants. The dishes were tasty and immaculate.

Google
I absolutely love this place. The food is consistently delicious and well-priced—perfect for anyone craving authentic North Indian flavors. Every dish I’ve tried has been flavorful and satisfying. The service is always top-notch. The staff is friendly, attentive, and makes you feel genuinely welcome every time. The ambiance is cozy and inviting, making it a great spot for a relaxed and enjoyable meal. Highly recommend this gem if you’re looking for great food, great service, and a comfortable atmosphere!

Google
Chaat Bhavan in Mountain View is a decent option, but it doesn’t quite live up to the standards set by its Sunnyvale counterpart. Food: The food is decent, with flavors that are satisfying but not particularly memorable. While the menu offers a variety of classic chaat and Indian dishes, the overall taste doesn’t quite match the richness and authenticity I’ve experienced at the Sunnyvale location. It’s good for a casual meal, but not a standout. Service: The service is alright, but it feels less polished compared to Sunnyvale. While the staff are generally helpful, the attentiveness and efficiency could be improved to create a more welcoming dining experience. Ambience: The ambience is simple and functional, but it doesn’t have the same vibrant, inviting feel as the Sunnyvale location. It’s a decent place to sit and enjoy a meal, but the atmosphere lacks the warmth and energy that makes the other location so enjoyable. Overall, Chaat Bhavan in Mountain View offers a reasonable option for Indian food, but it falls short when compared to the Sunnyvale branch. If you’re nearby, it’s worth a try, but I’d recommend heading to Sunnyvale if you’re looking for the best experience.

Google
A go to place for indian street food, and any north Indian vegetarian food. We love paneer Tikka, malai paneer, Bombay tava pulav, chat basket, chole bhature to name a few dish.

Yelp
Great food every single time, and great service too. Very reasonable pricing is the cherry on top

Yelp
Prabhjeet was our waiter and the food is AMAZINGGGG. I love it. I feel grounded and healthy.

Yelp
Amazing service , excellent food, and the food came in fast. We love it here! Gobi Manchurian is superb!

Yelp
Food is good and feels just like home! If you are looking for typical North Indian food you have to try the Bhel thali here! It has all the options and comes with option of chaas or tea! And the prices are super reasonable The service is also lovely with vey good and polite staff

Yelp
The manager at the Mountain View branch Sukhdeep is brilliant. She is always on the floor working whenever we've been there and overlooking operations herself. The quality of the food has been consistently good since we started going here. Highly recommend their catering, very well packed and customizable.

Yelp
Their food always hits home! The thalis are great, malai paneer is always amazing, the okra is SO good! The bhel is a big dish so enough to be shared with friends! The chai is the only thing that I think could be better. I feel like it used to be better? But maybe it's because I'm adding my own sugar not having them add it for me. The staff was kind and helpful, plus this restaurant (as the newer I think) is so much prettier than the other branches I've been to!

Yelp
First time here and we'll certainly be back! We came on a Friday evening and the restaurant was bustling. We were kindly greeted and seated at a 2-top in the attractive dining area. There were so many dishes to choose from, but we settled on three to share: pani poori, chaat samosa, and Makki Di Roti & Saag. All were flavorful and delicious. To drink I tried the chass, a refreshing buttermilk drink. Portions were generous and prices fair. We look forward to trying more dishes!

Yelp
Chaat Bhavan always hits the spot when you want an authentic street food fix -- I frequent this place and have also ordered catering from here once. They have all the classics as well monthly specials that rotate. This time, we got the dabeli, Vada pav, and dahi sev poori. The dahi sev poori was our favourite because of the balance of the sweet and salty flavors. The dahi was rich and thick, unlike the watery stuff you'll sometimes see at restaurants. Impressed! The dabeli was also good and had a coconut masala inside, packed with peanuts. I would get this again too. The Vada pav was a bit of a miss and had a kind of medicinal smell to it that I could t get behind. The potato inside was also too salty. The masala soda here is absolute fire so I would 100% recommend that! The restaurant is clean and comfortable and usually has no wait unless you come on a busy Saturday evening.

Yelp
I was very impressed by the malai paneer and the vegetable biryani. Absolutely delicious, with large amounts of veggie. I was disappointed with the lack of gluten friendly chaat options. For some reason they are using wheat flour instead of besan/chickpea flour. So sad at the lack of gluten free options and the menu being mislabeled with what is actually gluten free. However, the ambiance, service, prices, and flavors are all wonderful. I'll be back! There is a reason it's busy!

Yelp
Great food, service and general vibe! We came here for a birthday and they even brought out a little cake for us. We ordered variety of chaat- bhel puri, gol gappa, Bombay bhel, papdi chaat, Chinese bhel! We ordered main dishes chole bhature, Kulcha saag and gobi paratha, along with a paneer Kathi roll. All delicious and would highly recommend! We finished it all!

Yelp
This was an excellent Thali meal with amazing value! The variety of curries was fantastic, offering a great mix of flavors and textures. The food was prepared quickly, and the online ordering process was super easy and convenient. The takeout packaging was flawless--everything was neatly packed and stayed hot. The staff was polite and welcoming, with everything ready to go in what appeared to be a very tidy interior. Definitely a spot worth returning to!

Yelp
Made the noodles super super spicy, which is beyond edible. There are clusters of red chilli not mixed properly. I asked for mild and this is what I get. I called and they told me to come back and get it remade but unfortunately I cannot drive back, they refused a refund. If you truly want to make this right, refund order #159 for 3 orders of Hakka noodles. Didn't expect this from Chaat Bhavan.

Yelp
Always Always great food and great Service. Gary has managed to grow his people well and have them handle and manage the new Chaat Bhavan locations. Enjoyed the Santa Clara location at ElCamino Intersection with 237 End. Keep up the good work. Great Food. Super Humble and Polite People. Gary Singh himself is so humble and down to earth and his values trickle across all the restaurants and how they are run. God Bless Chaat Bhavan Always !

Yelp
Best Indian restaurant in the bay. Amazing food, clean and fast service. Good ambiance

Yelp
My third visit in-person and great good yet again. Ragda patties are always solid: freshly fried and crunchy on the outside, piping hot and soft on the inside. I also got the tomato soup which was good, but not great. A little too sweet, and the onion in the soup was unnecessary in my opinion. The soup was also a little pricey compared to the rest of their very affordable menu. Overall though, great experience as always

Yelp
Delicious food and excellent service. Will need to try more food as my daughter and I only had a bunch of out favorite appetizers.

Yelp
Takeout review: felt like the flavors didn't hit in our takeout order. We got Gobi Manchurian, which was really good, but the Chana Bhatura we got felt a little flavorless. The Hara Bhara Paratha also felt a little flavorless. I've gotten both items in person at the Sunnyvale lovation and they have tasted much better

Nikki T.

Yelp
Amazing food and very good variety on the menu. The ambience is also very nice. Must go if you're in for Indian food
google avatar

Yelp
We came here after our play at a theater nearby. The waiters are very nice though the service is a bit on the slower side. You don't see many purely vegetarian Indian spots often and so this place is great for our vegetarian friends, including the one we brought here. The food was super hot and made fresh. We also ordered like 4 entrees 2 orders of naan, another appetizer puri puri, and another order of bread. For all of that, it was just over $90. Although guy the waiter made a mistake and gave us an entree and naan order that was not ours, we gave them the entree back but they let us keep the naan without charge. The place has a good amount of booths and a nice ambiance. The service can be a little bit slow but overall still attentive. We were happy with our food here even though most of the group is not vegetarian.

Yelp
Authentic and delicious vegetarian Indian cuisine. I absolutely love that they have Dahi Batata Sev Poori, Bhel Poori, and other street food dishes that you don't always see served at some Indian restaurants. Both the Dahi Batata Sev Poori and Bhel Poori were so refreshing and nicely balanced with all the different textures combined - delicately crispy, creamy, and flavorful... using the right spices and sauces. Bhel Poori in particular comes with fresh pomegranate and cilantro which gives it such a rounded finish! The Sev Poori also kept its crunchy exterior while still holding onto its puffy form encasing spicy, sweet, savory, salty and tangy flavors with delicious yogurt, spices, potaoes, chickpeas, chutney and tamarind sauce. Luckily, Chaat Bhavana has several spots in the Bay Area! So, I now get to stop by whenever I crave those favorites snacks/appetizers. I recommend the snack combo, which comes with 2 appetizers (8 different dishes yo choose from) and either a tea, soda, or chaas drink for $14.99. 2 to 4 can share this appetizer. Good deal, and you get to try a nice selection! I also ordered the spinach paratha flatbread, which comes with a side of cooling yogurt raita, sliced raw onions, and spicy pickled amla (gooseberry). The paratha came out warm/freshly made. Beware the amla can be fairly spicy for those not familiar with Indian levels of spice - so the yogurt raita chutney paired nicely to help cool things down as a chaser to the spicy pickled amla. Drinks: Indian tea (black tea with milk and masala spices) which came with the snack combo or would be $2.99 by itself. Masala soda $3.99 (refreshing soda infused with lime, masala spices and fresh ginger leaves). Highly recommend this drink. We will definitely be back to try their other dishes.

Yelp
I remember coming here when it was a different Indian restaurant. Based on the reviews and my experience, I think Chaat Bhavan is going to be here a whole. I ordered takeout and got the dahi paapdi chaat and paneer wrap. I loved how they packed everything separately so it did not get soggy. The food was excellent. Service was good too.

Theresa A.

Yelp
Food is great and always fresh. Great atmosphere and service. Always have a great meal here!

Yelp
Great food and reasonable prices! My date and I started off with the samosas. They were pretty standard, but still tasty. The house thali was a great deal at $11.99. There was a lot of of variety with many tasty curries. I didn't care for the one that was cold and had raw onions. My favorite was the saag paneer. I also really enjoyed the paratha. My only complaint is that it took awhile to get our orders placed and also to get the check.
google avatar

Saanvi S.

Yelp
I decided to try something new off the January Specials list, and it was pretty good. However the dumplings felt more like kofta, and there was a lot of leftover curry which I ended up ordering garlic naan to eat with it. Regardless, it was very clean inside and the servers were really nice!

Chloe P.

Yelp
Everything I have tried here is soo good. I came not realizing it was vegetarian only but was impressed with how yummy all my selections have been. You should definitely check them out. I suggest the Gobi Manchurian and Chaat Baskets.
google avatar

Avivi W.

Yelp
This place was great! All the types of food we ordered tasted really really good, especially the paneer tikka masala was super creamy! The garlic naan also tasted very buttery and delicious! The service was pretty good, our food came out very fast, and the waiter was able to make recommendations! The restaurant itself is super clean, will definitely come back again!

Yelp
This was my first time at the Mountain View location, and it was a very satisfactory meal. Our party of two ordered two dishes (House Thaali and Dal Makhani), and both were wonderful. We're not vegetarian, but we enjoyed the opportunity to eat a delicious plant-based spread. We were surprised by how filling the food was, and there were leftovers we took home. I appreciate that Chaat Bhavan not only has tasty food, but it has a clean/neat interior and the service is top-notch. The staff was so kind and took good care of us, checking in to make sure we liked our food and to offer water refills. I'll be back.
google avatar

Vidya K.

Yelp
Value for money. I liked this place better than the Sunnyvale location. Less crowded. The server was trying to tell us we ordered too much. We didn't. But appreciated the input. Quantities are wholesome. Flavors are on point. Lots of space.

Yelp
Another year, another spin at the Thanksgiving turkey roulette. Will it be good? Will it be edible? Will I be pleasantly surprised? Why do I subject myself to this annually? I would describe this year's bird as "athletic" and result was rubbery & dry. I needed a second feast on my way home down 101. I saw on yelp that this place was open and off on a detour for me. The restaurant was surprisingly busy! Parties of 4 -10 people. 10 DoorDash folks rotating in and out. Whoa! Did other people need a second dinner too? Or were they smart and just ditch the dry fowl for ghee drizzled Indian dishes? The saag, bhindi, and baigen bartha were excellent. A bit sweeter than expected, like too much caramelized onion or sugar. Goes well with the parathas. All in all, I need a nap.

Tejaswini R.

Yelp
I loved the tandoori paneer tikka. The staff was very attentive and asked for feedback and if we liked the food . We also ordered naan (would have liked it a bit more crispy), malai paneer and gobi Manchurian. Overall had a great time . Enjoyed the ambience and cleanliness
google avatar

Prasiddha H.

Yelp
We finally got to try this new Chaat Bhavan location for the boys birthday and so glad we did! This location is really nice for a quick sit down delicious dinner. The service was quick and easy and we ended up ordering: * papdi Chaat - delicious and flavorful with lots of different textures * dry cauliflower Manchurian - this was flavorful and crispy and I really enjoyed this dish * hakka noodles - this was super yummy and flavorful and went really well with the gobi Manchurian * malai kofta - the curry was very creamy and the kofta was absolutely delicious. We enjoyed every bite! We also tried different bread like naan and onion kulcha and everything was delicious! Overall good experience!

Peggy R.

Yelp
My husband ordered Kadhi Chaval and had the special soup of Lemon Coriander and a side of samosa. The Kadhi Chaval is a curry made with chickpea flour and yogurt. He thought it was okay but I liked it. My soup was very good on a cold day but it did have a kick in the end. The samosas were fried very nicely and came with 2 sauces. One was spicy and one was sweet. I will go back.
google avatar

Ran K.

Yelp
This is my second time here, Service is attentive, Food was very good, lots of options and everything we had (the 4 of us shared about 7-8 dishes incl. appetizers) was between good and excellent. Its a relatively big restaurant so it not too quiet, but not loud enough to be disturbing We will be back!
google avatar

Matt L.

Yelp
Chaat Bhavan has wonderful food and excellent service! We came on a busy Friday night and were seated after only 5-10 minutes. Parking was easy in the strip mall lot. We ordered samosa chaat, chana batura, paneer tikka masala, an eggplant special, and garlic naan. Everything was tasty! The staff were also extremely kind and helpful! Highly recommend
google avatar

Niveditha S.

Yelp
I have no reason to knock off any stars. Chaat Bhavan's new location is clean and neat. Their service was impeccable and very welcoming hosts and waiters. The service was quick and efficient. We got the Chinese Bhel and Gobi Manchurian. The Gobi was excellent. We got a pav bhaji which was really good as well. The mango lassi was surprisingly low in sweet and flavorful. For main course we got garlic naan and 2 subzis. Malai paneer and baigan bharta. Both were delicious. The paneer was soft and had all the qualities of great Indian restaurant food! If you want a no bells and whistles Indian food. Chaat bhavan delivers.

Sam J.

Yelp
Great food as usual. Excellent service. We ordered dahi papdi chaat, dahi batata sev puri, thali and chilli paneer wrap. All the food was fresh and tasty. The servers were very friendly. I would recommend this place highly.
google avatar

Dele P.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite restaurants in the area. What brought me here was the promise of vegan options, and what keeps me coming back is that the food is amazing, the service is above par, and the atmosphere is inviting. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention our wonderful server Prabhjeet who treated my friends and me like royalty on our last visit. Additionally, he recommended a few dishes that were fantastic that we otherwise may not have tried. I am already looking forward to my next visit to Chaat Bhavan!

Vineet S.

Yelp
Nice vegetarian food and good service. New fresh ambiance Prices are also reasonable

Namratha P.

Yelp
Tried this new location a few weeks ago and had a great experience! The food all tasted great and up to Chaat Bhavan standards with fresh food and we got to try some November specials which were yum! The service was good as well with good attentiveness and fast service. We got the Sev Puri and Pakora for appetizers and they tasted very fresh and delicious! We tried the Baigan Bharta for the main and it had a good flavor to it as well. One of the new specials we tried was the pink pasta and it was a pleasant surprise with a yummy sauce that had an Indian touch to an Italian dish. It looks like they have a live counter with dosa and chaats we didn't try this time but will be back to try! Overall, we enjoyed coming here and will be back!

Shirish J.

Yelp
Food was great and plentiful, we ended up taking half of it. Service was nice, I would say 4 *, but the people were particularly good, so upped to 5. Ambiance:clean, orderly, elevator music a bit louder that my personal preference. All in all, 5*, we will be back.
google avatar

Meenakshi T.

Yelp
Rice tastes better with a good curry or two. We went to Chaat Bhavan twice in the last month and were pleasantly surprised with how fast and friendly the service was. Chakri was our host both times and was wonderful and patient with us. The ambience was wonderful and we really liked how they have expanded the restaurant. Now coming to the food - 1) The first time we came here we had the Bhel Thali and the snack thali - the dishes were good but I would skip the Dahi SEV Puri - the Bhelpuri was stand-out, as was the thali ( especially delicious were the saag and the Rajma 2) The second time (yesterday) we went with the Bhel Thali and the methi paratha. The thali was outstanding ( the aloo gobi, matar paneer, the dal Makhni, the Raita was delicious. There were two desserts - Sheera and Kheer - both were so good. This place is the BOMB for consistency in their thali and value for money. We will make this a frequent spot for us.

Yelp
Amazing experience, great service, fantastic food, Prabhjeet was amazing and very attentive!

Yelp
Best chaat in the area with very prompt food and a wide selection! We have been coming here for many years.
google avatar

Vaibhav A.

Yelp
Service (esp Sukhdeep) is great. Always courteous, serving with a smile. She's a real star. Good food. Authentic North Indian. We took the risk with sarson saag and makki roti. Pind di yaad aa gayi!
google avatar

Natasha S.

Yelp
This used to be Chaat Paradise. It's been remodeled and definitely a lot more upscale in terms of ambiance and menu. Parking is ample as it's part of a complex. When we entered we were greeted and seated promptly. We decided to order the thaali, gobi paratha, sprout bhel, and dahi papdi chaat. For the sprout bhel and dahi papdi chaat, we got a snack combo which includes chai and papad. Overall, the food was delicious with the hands down favorite being the thali. We loved the variety and flavors and it wasn't too spicy! We will definitely be back!
google avatar

Akiko I.

Yelp
I'm not a vegetarian nor a vegan but this place was super yummy. They had so many great choices and the server we had was great. It's a big place and many families tend to have big parties here but we got our food pretty fast. I think it tasted very authentic but I'm not 100% sure. Every dish we had was delicious.
google avatar

Mark S.

Yelp
I am not vegetarian and I don't go to vegetarian restaurants unless they have great food. This one does. I was very pleasantly surprised the food was so good. I'll be back to sample more food soon. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Diana D.

Yelp
I've ordered takeout from here a few times. Each time, the service was fast and the food was ready for pickup pretty quickly. Food portions, quality and taste are pretty good. I have ordered chaat, poori aloo, kadhi rice etc. from here at different times, and each time the quality was consistent. Prices are reasonable. We will definitely be back.

Quyen H.

Yelp
A great vegetarian place if you get the right things. Only had one bad dish here with Tandoori Malai Sizzler, described as vegetable marinated in yoghurt with Paneer. Well there were just bits of raw cabbage with all paneer, and it was very bland too. Our go to dishes are Makki di roti with excellent corn rotis, Jaipur's Masala (okra), pani puri (very refreshing mint sauce), Bhatura (warm chewy goodness), kheer and house thali if you would like to sample a bit of various things. Any bread items are great here.
