The Best Chaat Shops and Chaat Trucks in Sunnyvale and the South Bay - Eater SF

"Chaat Bhavan is a vegetarian restaurant with locations in Fremont and Dublin as well. People flock here for the vada pav and dabeli, two beloved spicy street sandwiches from the west coast of India. The first is filled with a deep-fried chickpea flour–battered potato fritter. The latter features a spicy mashed potato mixture that’s topped with masala peanuts and pomegranate arils — a spicy, sweet combo." - Hetal Vasavada

Whenever I go I feel disappointed with food and I remember back why I don't come here. Very recently I was craving indo-chinese food and ordered Manchurian and Veg Noodles and you expect the common preparation what we get back at home. But what we got was so bad I. Taste and not at all how it is usually prepped. This reminded me why I never come to chat bhavan and started writing this review right away. They have very few dishes that are good, the rest of the menu does not taste good at all.

Google
One of the best North Indian restaurants in the Bay Area. Channa Bhatura is a must try. Bhatura (deep-fried bread) is perfectly made—soft in the inside and crispy on the outside. The chats and biryani/rice are mediocre. However the curries are delicious and pair perfectly with the wide variety of breads on the menu. They also have monthly specials which are a hit or miss. I would recommend sticking to the basics - curries and bread. You cannot go wrong with any curry or bread.

I had the pleasure of dining at this restaurant recently, and I was thoroughly impressed. From the moment we walked in, the staff made us feel welcome with their warm smiles and attentive service. Our server was knowledgeable, friendly, and checked in just the right amount—not too much, not too little. The food was exceptional. Every dish we ordered was full of flavor, beautifully presented, and made with fresh, high-quality ingredients. The menu had a great variety, catering to both traditional and more adventurous tastes. I especially loved the lotus chaat and their special kofta with bread perfectly cooked and seasoned. Overall, the experience was seamless. Great ambiance, clean environment, and a team that clearly cares about both the food and the customer experience. I’ll definitely be coming back and would recommend this place to anyone looking for a memorable meal.

Decent food. We mainly came here for chaat. They have an extensive selection of food. We got the vada pav, dahi batata sev puri, the sabudana vada and the mixed veg pakoras with masala chai and masala soda. Everything was well-made but we would have liked the sabudana vadas to be bigger. They were more like small patties. The chaat isn't out of the world mind blowing but it is good enough. Their servers need to coordinate or at least look up orders before approaching tables. We were asked twice if we wanted to order something when we already had.

Radish parantha & malai kofta were great! Chole kulche didn’t impress. Overall, a decent spot for Indian food.

Google
By far one of the best vegetarian Indian restaurants. The quality, taste and aroma are unbelievable. Just the right amount of spices, makes every bite an explosion of flavors. Lakhvir Singh is wonderful, polite and very kind.

We loved it. We were there at a peak time on a Friday night. Full house and lots of people queueing at the door. The front of house moves people in quickly and efficiently! We barely had to wait. Wonderful to have a vegetarian-only menu. We ordered palak paneer (of course) and a second dish I can't recall (it's been a few months) and both were outstanding. Deep deep flavors, a nice kick and deep earthiness to the palak -- the waiter said it was Punjab style (apologies for my barely cursory knowledge). Quite heavy on the ghee, I'd say--they could stand to pull back on the oiliness (noted in another review and by my kid regarding the take-home portion). Dishes came immediately, as they obviously prepare huge amounts ready for the crowds. Yet the food feels fresh vs buffet-sad. Again, the spicing is great. Super busy and bustling night and yet we felt so comfortable as opposed to overwhelmed (vegetarians rule ;). The vibe in the huge dining room was just right, happily buzzing with full tables excited to eat delicious food. Our server was a lovely young man...sorry I can't remember his name; seemed to be a college student, clearly eager and hardworking. A bit of a language gap between us but that's all good. Everyone we interacted with was on point in terms of demeanor, which makes a huge difference in one's dining experience; no rudeness or rushing, rather responsiveness and eagerness. We'll make a point of going back when we're next in the South Bay!

Google
We have tried their dahi papdi chat, paneer chili and Vadapao. Dahi papdi chat was decent. Paneer chili was disappointment, there were way too many veggies in that dish compared to paneer. I am posting two images, first one after they served and second one after I finished eating paneer. You will see what I am trying to say. Vadapao was okay but not spicy. They have friendly and helpful staff. I forgot my credit card there and they kept it safely till next day.

Yelp
This was one of the most hilarious experiences of eating Jhal Muri! Knowing what jhaal feels like, knowing what jhaal muri feels and tastes like - this was a joke! It was set into a heart shaped cookie baking kinda small dish - the entire amount of muri used would have been two fist fulls. It was served soggy and lacked authenticity. Pomegranate seeds!! Really, never seen that in India! Can't call it fusion, can't call it selling it for American palate. This place is ruled out (for me and my peeps) as a "give it another try." The serving sizes are that of anorexia - beyond small! Unhealthy. The jhaal muri serving in a heart shape was good for a toddler serving. Pricey considering taste, quality-quantity!

Yelp
I was craving Chole Bhatura and found this place close by on Uber Eats. I compared the price for the same dish at a couple of other places and this place seemed reasonable. The place is in a small strip mall in Sunnyvale and has ample parking, when I went to pick up the food, it was later in the afternoon and it was not too crowded. This place is vegetarian and has an extensive menu - chaat and regular dishes. You can ask for spicy or not spicy and I picked spicy and boy was it spicy! I got a good size container of chaat and 2 bhaturas. I asked for some mint and tamarind chutney and they gave me 2 small containers without any question. I was prepared to pay but didn't need to. There is only inside seating and the place was not full. The tables are well spaced out and service was prompt. My food was ready when I got there and it was piping hot. The bhatura itself was soft and chewy and the chole was very tasty but watch out if you ask for spicy, it may be too spicy for some people to handle. It was too spicy for me but I still enjoyed the food. Looking forward to exploring their menu more!

Yelp
I have been here more times than I care to admit. Catered almost 3-4 times as well. Food used to be excellent, this was the gold standard to compare against other restaurants. But over the years the quality has fallen down. I catered for an office event as well and it ended up being disastrous. Our most recent dining experience was literally eye opening to make us realize this place wasn't what it used to be. I have a hunch that their best/star chef keeps moving to their newest location leaving behind the other branches with recipes which the cooks can barely replicate. Anyway, this time we got Chana batura, chole kulcha, Chana samosa and, just for kicks, Hakka noodles. The dishes were bland across the board and the Hakka noodles were floating in oil.

Yelp
Stopped by Chaat Bhavan for dinner and it was popping Saturday night around 8:30 when my friend and I dropped by. We snagged one of the last tables. It's a vegetarian restaurant with a large selection of chaat and snacks as well as curries. Please note that a large number of items on their menu are starred as Jain, which means no onions or garlic, so keep that in mind when you order. My friend and I shared one of our favorites - chana bhatura ($12.99) - as well as one paneer bhurji roll with plain paratha ($13.99). We liked the bhatura, but the chana / chickpea curry tasted like something was missing. We thought it might've been because it was made the Jain way with no onion and garlic. Neither of us liked the paneer bhurji roll. It was super bland, for one, and incredibly oily. Would recommend skipping this.

Yelp
Excellent food and ambience. Throughly enjoyed as an outsider to the Bay Area. Indian food here is closest to what you can get back home in India I think

Yelp
Mr. Mahesh gave us a great service. Food was great too. We would love come back to this place

Yelp
Lead here by a restaurant.com coupon giving us the wrong chain location. Regardless, the service is first rate, the food absolutely delicious, and served fresh from the kitchen. All home made delicacies. Very well seasoned, and spice adjustment is needed if you desire. Everything is vegetarian, but carnivors won't miss meat at all, as we definitely didn't. Items can also be made to fit a vegan diet. The atmosphere is appropriate for "fancy" or casual alike. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening.

Yelp
Terrible experience! I had some random person use my loyalty account and redeem $14 on my account and I haven't been to this place in 2+ years !!! I wasted 45 minutes of my life trying to get this fixed and the manager was unapologetic and basically said stuff like this happens - there is no way of checking and my point was -- don't you check on the name of the person you are redeeming the points for -- they put the loyalty points back in my account like they were doing me a favor. Very disappointed with this place

Yelp
I'm not an expert on Indian food, but I know what I like and I enjoyed my lunch quite a bit. First, I believe it's a full veggie restaurant. My friend and I had three items: Chaana Sag, which is garbanzo beans, spinach, and herbs. Very tasty with just the mildest of mild spices. Quite tasty! Second was Paneer Tikka Masala. Truly delicious. Creamy and rich. Cottage cheese squares, onions, and more delicious spices. Not spicy hot at all. We matched these with two types of naan. Regular and garlic. I personally thought the garlic was the best I've had. Crunchy and soft at the same time. Loaded with delicious garlic. Perfect eating with those dishes. You order on the app but unfortunately I have to report the service is very, very slow. For these basic items, probably took 20-25 minutes to receive. And we had to ask for the bill. The lunch section was very small but not cramped. And there is plenty of parking. I did see some outdoor seating which may/may not have been theirs, and it looked like there might be an extension to the restaurant, perhaps for dinner or big parties, but I'm not quite sure. I'm pretty sure I'll come back if I have the time, due to the long wait times.

Yelp
Our family loves this place! Almost can't go wrong with what you order and they always have some great special menu items each month. Paneer Masala and naan, dahi papdi chaat, puri bhajji, dahi batata sev puri, and pani puri are some of our repeat dishes. Don't go here for service. Don't expect a quiet meal. Don't go here for the ambiance. Just go to gulp down some great Indian fast food and enjoy the food coma.

Yelp
One of the cleanest and nicest and tastiest indian restaurants i've been to. We tried some snacks pani puri chai and chana bhatura my husband loves the bombay vada pav can you believe everything total was only $36????? all the food was so fresh hot and tasty Our server was so kind and kept checking on us My husband and I had such a lovely time we will be coming back!

Yelp
We ordered the following for lunch: Chana Bhavara; veg masala and veg Hakka noodles. I am not vegetarian so I had to eat a lot to fill up. I like chickpeas a lot. The bread was very good. Tasty sauces. Service was adequate and restaurant clean. Not too busy for lunchtime on a weekday.

Baaqar A.

Yelp
My DoorDash order was mistakenly placed as a pickup instead of delivery. I called the store and informed them that I would place another delivery order and asked them to send both orders together. Unfortunately, the store only sent the delivery order blaming mistake made during shift change. As a result, I had to drive to the store myself, wasting about 45 minutes round trip. When I arrived, I requested that the bread be replaced since it had become cold, but the staff refused, even after I offered to pay for the replacement. I still made them place my order, no receipt was provided. While waiting, I overheard another customer call about a DoorDash issue. The workers didn't assist her, and after she hung up, they began cursing her in Punjabi.

Yelp
Great food and friendly staff. Our favorites: Sev Pur - light and refreshing, above average, 5/5 Samosa - average, 3.5/5 Chana Masala - above average and saucy so pairs well with rice and bread 5/5 Haka Noodles - unique and kid friendly 4/5 Aloo gobi - a little different Everytime we go but it is always good and kid friendly, 4/5

Yelp
Overall great food, loved coming with my friends. Service was excellent and orders were prompt. -1 star for lack of parking and also asking to give a Google review. Food was tasty and environment was friendly.

Parvathy M.

Yelp
We ordered chapati which was supposed to be ready by 4:30. My husband and I took turns waiting for an hour. It was still not ready at 5:30. I understand they are busy but then please don't take so many orders. We had to leave without the chapati. Very disappointed with their management. Will definitely never order catering from them again.

Yelp
Came on a Tuesday night so wasn't too crowded, got a table and food fairly fast compared to other days which was great. Food was good too!

Yelp
It's not overly fancy, but Chaat Bhavan is probably one of my favorite reliable Indian restaurants in the Bay area. It's good and really reliable Indian food considering the expansive menu. We ordered a whole variety of dishes but my favorite is the chaat food - it wasn't too watery and was flavorful. They have great mango lassi also! Lots of options and are friendly to all spice levels and dietary restrictions :)

Yelp
I've never had Indian food before!! What crazy I know, and I had been recommended this place and I thought why not! And I am so glad that I did I feel as if my palate has extended to new places, I understand why pani poori is so popular because wow what an explosion of flavors and textures. I as well enjoyed the plate because I feel as if I got to enjoy a little bit of everything without a commitment to something large which is nice for my first time. I would definitely come here again to try something new. As for the restaurant very very clean and nicely kept, it honestly gives kinda fancy. Def recommend

Katrriya K.

Yelp
Tried metho malai kofta, dum aloo and paneer tikka masala. Too spicy, too much cream, not enough flavor other than red chili. Roti made of maida, white, badly cooked and lumpy.

Yelp
We went out for a fun and delicious family dinner and Deepak hosted us with great care. He was attentive, welcoming, and the food was so tasty. We also had small children with us, including our 1 year old toddler, and he and his staff were friendly and interactive with her, and made us feel at home (we weren't stressed being out to lunch with kids!). His warm heart and kind hospitality made our day. We appreciate him and would highly recommend the quality of service and food at Chaat Bhavan. Thank you!! Tara and Vik Lal

Yelp
One of our goto places every other weekend. One of the best and consistent food Indian food in peninsula. Especially like their burger combo and chaat. Friendly staff.

Yelp
Food service and ambience were great. Value for $ They also celebrated my 1 yr old son's birthday and entertained him during our visit. Highly recommend

Yelp
Oh Chaat Bhavan, a tried and true staple in my rotation of food spots. It's not the best but also not the worst and definitely better than a lot of other places. This spot is reliable for your basics - roti, dal, Chana, paneer, chaat etc. It is all veg so that's an edge over other places. Service is quick and friendly. Always clean and lively.
google avatar

Deepthi T.

Yelp
The service and space was very nice and clean. The menu was so massive, but the food wasn't very fresh and was a little greasy. I would stick to chaat/apps and avoid the entrees. The paneer tikka was very watery. Overall, it's okay and there are so many Indian spots in the South Bay which creates a very competitive environment
google avatar

Divya C.

Yelp
I highly recommend the Sunnyvale location (the OG one)! Even though they are always busy on the weekend and there's not a whole lot of parking, it's worth circling around and adding your name to the waitlist because the food is that good. Even on the busiest day, the most I've ever had to wait is ~30 minutes, so definitely don't let that deter you! Our go-to's are the gobi manchurian and chole bhatura. The gobi manchurian is always super crisp and flavorful, and the serving size of the chole bhatura is enormous - you get 2 bhaturas with a ton of curry. The service is also super fast, and the food never takes too long to come out. Definitely give Chaat Bhavan a try when you're in the area!
google avatar

Aditi P.

Yelp
This was my first time here. We called for Chai, Sev batata Dahi puri, Chinese bhel, Papdi chat, Pani puri, Dabeli, Ragda Pattice, Sabudana vada, Masala chaas, Moong dal halwa and Falooda. Everything was very good. 10/10 to moong daal halwa and Papdi chat. Staff were very courteous. Ambiance was good. Will definitely visit this place again.
google avatar

Siddhartha G.

Yelp
Really impressed with the caring service and freshly made food with its own unique touches here at Chaat bhavan. My favorite was the saag and makka rotis, hard to find across the bay, it was flavorful, rich and irresistible. I also liked their assortment of chaat dishes and a simple yet delicious thick aloo paratha. The chole were yum and the bhature puffy with great texture.
google avatar

Heejoo R.

Yelp
Amazing chaat place. It is my favorite indian restaurant in the bay area. I am obsessed with their pani puri. It is very refreshing. My mouth is watering even seeing the picture haha Their naans are very chewy and savory. The rice is also a good pair with the curries. I have tried bunch of their curries over multiple visits. My favorite is Maki di Roti & Saag. I will always get some paneer dish and Saag. Every dish has little spiciness in them. Service is amazing and i would recommend to go between 6-7pm since it is less busy and you can park at the restaurant.
google avatar

Yelp
We got lunch catered for our grandson's first birthday last weekend. We had great food from Char Bhavan. The service was great and they supplied more than sufficient quantity of food. Chat Bhawan delivery was on time and decent. Everybody present loved the food. I would wholehearted recommend their methi-aloo and Tasdaal, both dishes were quite authentic in taste

Yelp
My 14 y.o. asked his friend group about where they go locally with their families for the best Indian food. That's what led us to Chaat Bhavan. This Sunnyvale location is about 20 minutes from our house so it isn't right around the corner but we'll travel for good food. I personally loved the Pani Poori, the street food with potato, onion, chickpeas and chutney in crispy shells with sauce. I also loved the Vada Pav, which was like a little slider with a spicy potato patty and garlic and green chutney. My wife always loves and orders Saag Paneer and this variant was one of the better ones we've tried. The Mango Lassi was excellent, the Samosas and the Biryani were both good but unremarkable and we preferred the Butter Naan over both the wheat and flour Roti options. My son's friends said to get the Malai Kofta and the Chana Bhatura also but we already had lots of food so we ran out of runway. Fantastic place with a lot of options very different from what we've ever had before. Loved it!
google avatar

Kelly B.

Yelp
We enjoyed a takeaway order from Chaat Bhavan. Ordering was easy, the food was ready when we went to pickup. We ordered a house Talia, samosas, butternut squash soup and bahtula cholle. Lots of food and all of it really tasty. The breads were freshly made and delicious. Loved the cholle! Reminded me of Sunday brunch at Viks in Berkeley, in a good way! We'll be back! If you love rice, better order more, rice was a little skimpy.

Yelp
Had a chance to try Chaat Bhavan with the family and boy last week and enjoyed it! I have been here a few times before and tried the food many times, but didn't realize I never wrote a review! For someone who enjoys vegetarian Indian food, this is a spot for you. The prices here are good, and the food is tasty. The service is fast and there's options to take to go as well as eat in house. Last week we decided to eat at the restaurant and enjoyed it. We ordered: * papdi Chaat - delicious and crunchy, I would eat this again * gobi Manchurian - this was crunchy and crispy but also saucy, I enjoyed every bite of this thoroughly! * hakka noodles - the boy wanted this and now I'm happy he did but these were flavorful and yummy - would totally have this again! * malai kofta - I always enjoy a good malai kofta and this was definitely on point. The sauce was creamy and delicious and went well with the garlic naan we ordered * saag - this was yummy as well as felt creamy which was nice Overall the food was yummy and we enjoyed it thoroughly!

Yelp
Dined in at the Sunnyvale location on a Saturday night. We ordered the veg Manchurian, dabeli, and samosa chat. Everything was ok and we felt lacked a bit of flavor. Pro: the dishes came out hot and fresh. Con: not much flavor. Maybe we ordered the wrong dishes but we saw other tables ordering the same too The bathrooms were on the dirty side, users beware. We'd probably come and try other restaurants in the area before returning to this chain.
google avatar

Eden H.

Yelp
Bring back the specialty monthly sizzling soya chaap dish We love Chaat Bhavan and we would highly recommend. Beware of paprika during rush hour, it can be quite busy. The workers are always friendly, and we also do takeout a lot. The ambiance is good, and the bathroom is also clean.
google avatar

Harish S.

Yelp
The dabeli didn't have pomegranate and it was some sweet syrup to make it all sweet. The falooda drink wasn't like the Indian falooda with both ice cream and drink. It felt like a strawberry shake with whipped cream on top but the server did tell there was a scoop of vanilla ice cream inside. Maybe it was already melted. The servers were sweet and helped us explain the dishes.

Yelp
Always 5 stars for this place for the food freshness and taste. Be ready for some long wait times over the weekends. We went for lunch at 1:15 on a Saturday and had to wait almost 45 minutes to get a table for 6. They kept giving tables to groups of 2 and 4s before us. Its always very busy there, but the service is fairly fast. This is our go to place for good vegetarian food. The new July drink mohabbat ka sharbat is rose flavored milk drink with watermelon cubes. Its a good refreshing one to try. All chaat items are very good. My family loves going her on a non-busy day and enjoy the curd based chaats there.Chaat Basket

Yelp
Chaat bhavan sunnyvale has long been a favorite restaurant of mine. Last month I took my family there for my daughter's birthday dinner. The food is always a hit with kids and elderly parents alike. We ordered malai paneer, mix veg, naan and chapati. My kid got her favorite pani puri. Everything was to the point as always but it was made surprisingly special by our server Yuvraj Singh. He was a jolly presence around the floor, playing with kids and interacting them while the parents got a moment to eat peacefully. He surprised my kid with a lava cake and ice cream birthday surprise at the end of the dinner. She was shy but equally happy to have such a special moment on her birthday. I've been a long time patron at this restaurant but sincere thanks to Yuvraj for making this one time extra memorable.

Yelp
After a long day of hard work I decided to go to chaat bhavan. I totally fell in love with the ambiance and the service. They have very good and kind employees and the manager. The food is also very tasty. I recommend trying paperi chaat to everyone. Hoping to visit is again and again. :)

Yelp
This place is a favorite for chaat lunches! Today the food was fantastic, service was great/fast. The tea seemed a little different than usual - we guessed they added more fennel? Our go to dishes are: Dahi batata sev puri The crispy puri wafers with the veggies fillings and sauces are sooooo good!! I've been to other places where I need to build it myself and I definitely don't put enough sauce/filling. This one has yogurt which I love! Malai Paneer This curry is a store special and must try. So so so good I can eat it straight up with a spoon. Good with rice, roti, or naan too though As for veggie dishes, we switch it up between Aloo gobi matter (cauliflower, potatoes, and peas), bindi (okra), or the new trial of Chana saag (chickpea with Indian creamed spinach). They're all delicious even if they can be a little spicy. My verdict of first try of the saag? Two thumbs up. I'm yet to try something I didn't like!!

Yelp
Excellent food as always, full of quality and taste. Mafildo provide highl class welcome and service to each guest. We went with our family and he attended us and treated us well and our order came in time. Very good ambiance of the restaurant and special attention is give to service and food quality! Thanks Sal M.

Yelp
Amazing food! Deepak took care of us really well! We will absolutely come back to try more tasty dishes.
google avatar

Reema A.

Yelp
We love visiting this location for the great chai and food, friendly staff who are really quick to attend to you. Special mention to Mafildo who is quick in remembering what we like every time we drop in! Everyone is courteous and attentive to the detail. I love the ambience and the cozy seating that is such an improvement from other Indian restaurants. The cleanliness in the place including the bathrooms is a plus point for me. Despite the limited space the place gets full really quick, yet the service and the attention from the staff never lacks. I love how they add monthly specials and changing it up to the flavors of the month. Though I prefer nonveg food, this place has become my go to, even for taking friends and able to show them a decent fine dining restaurant. Well done and keep it up!

Yelp
We've been going to this place past 8 years. The food has never disappointed us. The interior is really great The staff is amazing. They're friendly, suggestive and if they suspect we're following particular diet they'd let us know about how each dish we ordered is made. Yuvi(yuvraj) has been extremely kind and playful with my kids. He would keep encouraging kids to finish their food during his table rounds and reward them. He didn't let us tip him after giving us amazing service. I can keep on going about Chat bhavan sunnyvale food and survive. Highlyyyyy recommend

Yelp
Always enjoy coming here. Although we typically have to wait a while to be seated I always enjoy the fresh food. Love how they accommodate their menu for vegetarian, Sikhs, and gluten sensitive people. Parking is a bit limited and it's more of a casual dinner experience. Nothing fancy.

Yelp
Great place for Indian vegetarians! Sad they took dal khichdi off the menu and i wish they bring it back.
