Yelp
Chabaa is located on Main Street in "downtown" Manayunk and connected to Yanako. I haven't been to Yanako yet but I'm sure I'll check it out soon. Chabaa is a Thai bistro known for its Thai curry and Pad Thai dishes. We arrived around 7 on Friday night and were surprised that it was fairly empty. We were quickly seated and immediately were bummed that we didn't bring any booze. It's a BYOB, like many places in Philadelphia. For restaurant week, they had 3 options for all three courses (appetizer, entrée, and dessert) that seemed to blend both Chabaa and Yanako menus.
What we ordered:
Crispy Spring Rolls served with a Thai Chili sauce. They were okay, pretty standard.
Kanpachi Carpaccio: raw fish (Carpaccio) with pickled jalapeno, shaved onion, and yuzu ponzu (citrus) sauce. It was definitely the best appetizer that we got. It was plated beautifully and had just the right level of heat.
Grilled Tiger Shrimp Satay: two shrimp with fresh cucumber salad and a Thai curry peanut sauce. I thought the peanut sauce was tasty, but the shrimp itself was a bit dry.
Sushi platter: Delicious! An assortment of 10 pieces of sashimi and a California roll. The fish featured were tuna, salmon, yellowtail, shrimp, and surf clam. We were definitely not fans of the surf clam, so chewy. Ick. Each sashimi piece had a large dollop of wasabi holding the fish to the rice. My boyfriend loved the extra heat, but for me, it was a little over the top. I would prefer to add my own to the soy sauce.
Chirashi: Fish cuts served atop a large serving of rice with the egg omelet, pickled radish, and kanpyo. The portion was huge for a restaurant dinner entrée. Everything was delicious. Both entrees were delicious and would definitely order them again. Much better than the chirashi bowls I've gotten from the grocery store.
Green Tea Crème Brulee: A very large portion of crème Brulee. It had a delicious caramelized crust atop of green tea crème Brule. I'm not a huge fan of green tea or matcha, but if you like it, to begin with, you'd really enjoy the dessert.
Thai Coconut Custard: 4 large mini bowls of coconut custard. It was creamy, smooth and just the right level of coconut. Yum! I'm still thinking about it.
Overall the food was good. I'm sure I'll head back to Chabaa in the near future. I thought that we were waiting quite a long time in between dishes and were pretty surprised that it took that long. Several of the dishes we ordered was raw and felt they should have been better-prepared being it was Restaurant Week AND a Friday night. The entrée rounds definitely made up for the lackluster for appetizers and I'm still thinking about that coconut custard.
