12 Great Spots for Tortas Ahogadas in Los Angeles | Eater LA

"Built on the solid foundation of housemade birote salado, using a recipe developed by founder Santiago “Chago” Laguna and Chago’s first panadero (baker) Don Ángel Solis, this tortas ahogadas specialist originally opened in Guadalajara in 1985. Chago is the only vendor in town that does it all in house from the bread to the meat. The Montebello location opened in 2006 with a ‘50s-style soda fountain design just like in Guadalajara, with black and white checkerboard floor, shiny red vinyl booths, and memorabilia providing a novel setting for stiff rolls drowned in tomato sauce and salsa de chile de árbol. Fillings include classic carnitas, and for a couple of quarters more, the tasty pork tongue. The Laguna family still oversees production of birotes salados, now made by panaderos Francisco Javier Calvillo and Omar Calvillo, a dedicated father and son team making bread rolls that sets this torta ahogada stand apart." - Bill Esparza

Tortas Ahogadas serves the best in town! Their food is authentic Jalisco cuisine—full of bold flavors and tradition. I highly recommend this place!

Google
It's a great spot for anyone craving authentic Mexican flavors. Their signature dish, the torta ahogada, is delicious, featuring perfectly seasoned pork and a rich, spicy sauce that packs a punch. The cozy atmosphere and friendly service make it a welcoming place to enjoy a meal. I recommend trying their horchata to complement the food! Overall, a great choice for anyone looking to indulge in traditional tortas ahogadas from Jalisco's Mexican cuisine.

Google
This is my fave spot, so naturally, it was my Mother's Day pick. The food's incredible, you won't find anything better. Service was awesome, food came out fast. But the best part? The owner comes out, chats with everyone, and makes sure you're all set.

Google
The food was great to stay. We had just laid my daughter to rest and she loved to come here so we did great service.

The one thing I really enjoy is Mexican food but from Guadalajara,Jalisco,Mexico where my dad came from that great amazing city in Mexican. Their cooking is unique is a melting pot for many years. The popular dish in Guadalajara is the Tortas Ahogadas the popular sandwich have grown and speard throught the United States. I love Tacos Dorados Sencillo it's potato tacos fried but can choice of meats in the tacos like carne, buche, pollo, lengua, mixto, cueritos . They serve torta, tacos, tostada the menu selections is small but the food incredible and full of flavors in each bite. Chago Ahogadas know how to a truly Torta Ahogadas and other items that bring the city of Guadalajara alive.

Google
I’m sorry! I don’t know what all the hype is. We stopped at this place to have a torta and I’m sorry to say it wasn’t what I was expecting. Bread was tough like rubber so hard to bite. They give you a spoon buy no knife. Meat it’s not even shredded and no beans on my bread. Lack of flavor and. Salt! My sauce was cold and flavorless. I had better tortas. Sorry for saying this but food lacks flavor. *also waitress with the long lashes and black hair hates to be there *

Google
Best Tortas Ahogadas , Guadalajara style Mexico authentic we drove down from Sb to MONTEBELLO. 98 miles to get there. And were happily surprised. Also taco dorados great ...Also took some Tortas ahogadas home...will be going often. Can't beat the price either. Check it out!

Google
Decided to give it a try after reading the reviews. Staff is very friendly and attentive. Definitely very spicy sauce. I ordered the one with salsa and Chile on the side. The meat and salsa was too salty for me. Potato tacos were better.

Yelp
My trip to Chago has been overdue for at least 7 years. I finally drove by and decided to pick a torta ahogada for lunch and I was NOT dissapointe. The taste of this torta was out of this world. What I loved most about this place is the 1950's diner vibe. We had to wait a few minutes outside but they found us a table fairly quickly, and we got our food relatively quick too. They serve u in a dish that prevents the soup of spilling yet its not quite a soup bowl. Pretty unique if you ask me. 10/10.

Yelp
This has been one of my favorite places to eat at since I was a little kid. The service is always amazing and what other place will the owner come and ask if you need anything else; have nothing to complain about in this department. The food also speaks for itself. Always amazing and delicious and I have yet to find any other place that matches the taste! The restaurant gives off a 50s burger shack vibe and is decorated with pictures of the many famous people the owner has met- love looking at them all while eating. There's plenty of parking but it will get full so come at a good time!! I will always come back to Chagos and recommend others to try it as well.

Yelp
I'm not sure what the hype is on the tortas. Maybe it's all about the vibe, as it is chill, but flavors are definitely lacking... So here we go with my breakdown... I can see why the place might be popular. The decor and the vibe are chill. The patio looks like it would be fun to hang out in (tho it wasn't open during our visit). The interior dining area has booth seating with a juke box and gumball machine, and there are lots of pictures with celebrities that have visited the place. We ordered the carnitas and chicken tortas and potato and bean crispy tacos. The bread was definitely hard and chewy even after soaking. The tortilla and the stuffing used for the tacos were definitely different; the tortilla was thick, and I'm not really sure what the stuffing mix was as it tasted more like masa and not potatoes. The sauce was odd tasting. It tasted too much like cloves and a bit sweet (weird and not to my liking), but the spicy sauce was good and spicy. The carnitas meat was too dry and lacking flavor, but the chicken was really good. Our server was attentive and friendly. They have their own parking lot, which is not too big, and when the place closes at 6, they close the gates to the parking too. Overall, I wouldn't eat here again as the flavors were not to my liking (nor the people i was with).... way too many cloves in that sauce and bread is too hard!

Yelp
Love this place their tortas ahogadas are the best I've tried. I've tried a lot of different tortas ahogadas and none of them have beat this one. The service is great too they're quick and make sure you have anything you need. It's a little tight but I don't mind it at all it's also a little loud but not a problem at all.

Yelp
Always an making delicious spot. Wait times are okay even on weekends. Service is AMAZING - our food was out in minutes Great music and indoor and outdoor seating. A MUST GO!

Yelp
Food was great! Not your ordinary restaurant. Wouldn't go here if you are expecting high quality g food & high quality service. I felt like I was in Mexico lol expect those vibes, like if you're going to a restaurant in TJ. Definitely recommend if you are into this food. Everything was good.

Yelp

Yelp
Best Tortas in town! I had a torta mixta and two frijol tacos! The torta was delicious and flavorful. The tacos packed a lot of flavor too! I'll definitely come back for more! Good food, good service and reasonable prices! I highly recommend this establishment!
google avatar

Amanda R.

Yelp
HIGHLY recommend getting the chile on the side. If you aren't aware, tortas ahogadas are meant to be extremely spicy, so if you're not use to super spicy food you can still enjoy this meal with the chile on the side to tailor to your spice level. The torta was great, the tacos were okay. The staff was very friendly and inside has only a few booths. When we went the outside seating was closed, but it's super spacious on their patio.

Yelp
I love Chagos! They're always so packed! But line goes decently fast. I love the tacos ahogadas. I add extra lemon and salt and I'm a happy fatty. I love the crunchy taco in a citrusy, picked onion, and tomato sauce. I don't get added meat, just plain bean or potato (or both!) and I'm happy. My boyfriend really likes it and he's from Jalisco. He says it's still not quite like home, but he enjoys it. He liked getting the torta with lengua.
google avatar

Tony R.

Yelp
They were amazing!! They have the smaller size too as in half tortas! The sauce is good and so are the taco dorados! :) service was also great
google avatar

Jose M.

Yelp

Yelp
Love this place! Typical hole in the wall with an amazing TORTA AHOGADA! Ahogados tacos de papá so good and our waitress was super sweet!
google avatar

Alondra M.

Yelp
The food is delicious. I had the torta ahogada mixta and was not disappointed. The decor is very interesting, they have plenty of pictures of famous people all around. The chicken and friends were better than we expected.

Yelp
Not happy with your tortas, it have me a stomach virus infection. Will never como Here again

Yelp
Tortas aren't all that great...I guess they are famous for their bread, based on all the info and posters on the walls...buuuuut it's not all that great.in reality it's very hard and difficult to chew. You would think the torta being wet (and I mean WET AND SOAKED) that it would make the bread softer and easier to break apart or even bite, but naaaaaaa.imagine a dog with a chew toy.thats how everybody looks trying to eat the torta straight with hands.the chicken and sauce are really good.yea I'd come back and try it once more.but for the hype that made me come try it,not all that.service was good.girl came and took out order quickly and kept coming back to check on us.maybe I'll come back.
google avatar

Yelp
Had a wonderful day at SoFi watching a great Rams vs Cowboys game. Too many options on drive home, and Chago Ahogadas caught our eye. The decor seems very 50s dineresque. The staff was very busy and it was close to closing so our experience was a bit underwhelming. More like I didn't know how to order as this was our first visit. Quickly we ordered and got our food. It was good. Had some interesting taste. The taco with papa had a great texture and taste. The winners were Buche tacos with Papa good stuff.

Yelp
Well this place had always been amazing. The food, ambiance, service. Everything was top notch. My wife and I drove out from Palm Springs just to have a torta ahogada de carnitas and 2 tacos, one lengua and one mixta. Tacos were fantastic. Very flavorful and decent amount of meat. The Torta on the other left us very disappointed. The amount of Carnitas was generous. The sauce was very tasty. Sadly though, my wife's torta and mine was seriously hard. Nothing like the time we had visted in the past. We left the bread soaking in the sauce for over 15 minutes. Constantly spooning the sauce over, under and through the Torta. But that thing wouldn't soften. We told the waitress our issue. Unfortunately, she did not fix the problem. My wife literally picked up the Torta and started tapping it with a spoon in front of the waitress. You could literally 'hear' it. My wife mentioned to her we had come from a long distance just to visit the restaurant knowing of its immense following of many people. Both celebrities and non alike. My wife told her if someone in the industry were to come and try a torta ahogada for the first time, they'd leave vowing never to return. Literally leaving a 'bad taste in their mouth.' We were very disappointed. Having recently seen the restaurant featured in a segment on Spanish TV drew my attention to it again, wanting to have the favors torta ahogada. Now it's almost as if it has become infamous.

Yelp
Overall food was good as i have come here before. it was on my way to run some errands was craving some torta ahogada and didn't want to go to my usual sport in East LA. i went only with my son and had a torta 3 tacos an horchata and a michelada. i quickly paid cause my son was been anxious and to my surprise they over charged me close to $40 an additional torta and two other items that didn't have a description just random numbers. just double check before leaving. lesson learned.

Yelp
Torn about Tortas * I have had Tortas on multiple occasions at taco trucks, but I've never had a Torta at an actual restaurant. I stumbled across Chago Ahogadas and saw that they were known for their Tortas, so I wanted to give it a try. * I got the Torta Mixta $9.25. This was the Torta with all the meat inside. When I was presented with the dish, I was a little surprised because it wasn't what I was used to. I wasn't aware that there are different types of Tortas. This was "Tortas Ahogadas". The bread was super super super hard, I guess the bread is supposed to be harder with this type of Torta but it was literally the hardest bread I have ever had in my entire life. I tried submerging it in the liquid a little bit to soften it, but it was still very hard to eat. In terms of taste, it was okay, but I think I would've preferred something else. * I wanted to try the Chocoflan $3.50 because the person at the register told me it was similar to a creme brûlée. It was pretty good. It comes out cold and soft in texture. It's kind of like cold creme brûlée on top of chocolate cake. * The service was slow because of how many people were ordering and eating at the restaurant. There is a lot of indoor and outdoor seating. I heard that they have good tacos here. I'll try and come back to see if I like their tacos more!

Juan C.

Yelp
At first it was a funny taste but now you'll catch me there every time I pass by Washington. Best ahogadas in LA

Roberto Carlos L.

Yelp
Hi y'all! We got a chance to visit Chago Ahogadas in the city of Montebello. The Tortas Ahogadas are a carnival of delicious flavors with the Jalisco Mexican seal. * The first international Tortas Ahogadas! * One of the ingredients that distinguishes the "Chago" Tortas Ahogadas from any other is "the salty birote" that is extraordinarily made every day thanks to its exclusive brick ovens. Chago Tortas Ahogadas has become a "little piece of Guadalajara in Los Angeles". * Now is your turn to go try this deliciousness!

Yelp
I visited a few weeks ago and haven't had the chance to leave a review. Overall, the experience was great. The food was good and the service was quick. We came for the Tortas and personally I would have gotten the sauce separate because I don't like soggy bread but the purpose of the dish is for the torta to be soaked in the sauce it comes with. Both the torta and sauce were delicious but for next time I would have definitely gotten the sauce on the side.
google avatar

Carlos T.

Yelp
Food is great, but the service has been lacking a lot lately. Servers are rude and lack to check on their tables. I once waited over 30 min for my drinks & napkins, had to get them from an empty table next to me.
google avatar

Kristina M.

Yelp
Hearty torta ahogada with crusty, hard bread, shredded meat of choice, and an addicting sauce to drown the torta in. There are varying level of spiciness with the sauce and the spicy sauce isn't overpowering but a good amount of addicting spiciness. What I truly enjoyed were the potato tacos topped with shredded cabbage, pickled red onions, a squirt of lime, and some of their addicting sauce to douse it all with more flavor. Truly recommend!

Yelp
Muy buenas tortas ricas y picosas y Los taquitos dorados ni se diga se Los recomiendo

Yelp
So usually never have any problems here, but today picked up an order of 4 tortas. Towards the end of the torta and this popped out of the torta. Don't really know where to go from here with this, but just a heads up to the owners or whoever. This could have been worse if it was actually chewed down on, but luckily it was caught before hand. Really enjoy eating here, this might just change everything for me...
google avatar

Chris M.

Yelp
So we literally just got back from Guadalajara Mexico and the place that we wanted to try the torta ahgohada from literally took it off their menu... So obviously I was super diaspointed and needed to see if there was a place here in Los Angeles that could fill that craving.... ....I found it and man was it worth the stop :) this place moves tortas ahgohadas like Mc Donald's does burgers LOL The make thier own bread so of course this is a must stop for those looking for authentic GDL style Tortas Ahgogada!! The Staff Super Friendly Staff The Food Delicious The Seed from order to recipt of food Fadter than most

Victoria A.

Yelp
There were only 2 people serving food my food was cold,it was really hot out,the person serving us was really rude and while eating we heard people screaming that they will do a complaint there was 6 of us and we saw a open table for us but gave the 6 person table to 2 people
google avatar

Marielen B.

Yelp
Torta and tacos were really good..... I definitely will come back here they see even better that the ones in guadalajara
google avatar

Amber E.

Yelp
We were seated quickly and the service was efficient. They were playing 80's-90's music which definitely added to the ambiance. The restaurant is filled with photos of various famous people whom have visited the restaurant (chain) over the years. The food was served quickly! The torta is stopped with a tomato salsa with lots of flavor with added red onions. The bread (bolio) was a sourdough with a good enough crunch even though it was drenched in sauce. The taco dorado was crispy and light, and not greasy at all! The added cabbage and onion, definitely add some freshness. Overall, the food was 10/10. I will definitely be coming back!

Yelp
Lo Mejor en Tortas Ahogadas! Y los tacos dorados con carne... deliciosos. El servicio y atención súper bien .

Yelp
Came in on a rainy day and it was a cool diner style place. good service the food did come out pretty quick. I got the carnitas torta ahogada and a taco dorado de frioles. I recommend the torta ahogada it is a bit more on the harder side for the bread. If you are not a fan of spicy I wouldn't not recommend the medium. Overall a nice and cool spot.

Samantha A.

Yelp
food was excellent and customer service was great! I got the tacos de papa con carne and it was so delicious! definitely going back there and definitely recommend!

Destiny A.

Yelp
HORRIBLE SERVICE. I called at 2:30 for an order and they said ready in 30 minutes. I arrived at 3:15pm and they said they were still working on it. Fast forward 30 minutes when I had already inquired 3 times about my order, they claim someone "stole" it. Just a bunch of excuses these workers gave. Many people were getting their orders quickly but not us. Only good thing is the food but service is poor
google avatar

Everly F.

Yelp
I was recommended to this place by a family member and let me just say my expectations must of been too high because this place did not meet them. As soon as I stepped into the place, there was a smell inside. My boyfriend ordered the michelada which was good (one star for that). I ordered an horchata which was good too (one star for that). Then we both ordered a torta ahogada de carnitas with a taco de papas each. The taco dorado de papas was good but nothing special. The torta was not good to us. We're Mexicans so we're used to eating tortas ahogadas but this one tasted A LOT LIKE CLOVES! I could not finish it and it left a nasty taste in my mouth. I couldn't taste anything but cloves. I thought it was just me but my boyfriend did not like it either. We gave the torta a 4/10.
google avatar

Antonio S.

Yelp
Muy buenas torts super recomendadas el birote esta riquisimo , casi Como si estubieras en GDL Lo unico en mi muy personal opinion poquito menos de comino o tomillo y quedaria al Punto, y muy buen servicio

Ana K A.

Yelp
We came in and order 3 tortas ahogadas ,6 tacos with carne for our little one fries and chicken nuggets, not chicken tenders as the menu says . The server I don't what to say she got so upset cause I asked her if she can please go back and warm up the carnitas in the microwave that I wasn't gonna feed my kids cold carnitas , she got so upset she said No puedo , I can bring you a little warm up in a bowl ($12) which she charged me for even tho I told her no I didn't want it cause they were still cold . I told her please hold the meat it's literally cold to the touch . Long wait for the food . The salsa de tomate had a bunch of cloves which take the whole taste of the entire torta. Not my place tried it once but that's it paid over $90 just for that . And cold food fuck no I want my money and times worth and they get upset if you ask for cheap napkins so you can clean your hands after eating the torta ahogada .. hire a better person with more friendly customer service. And the restroom are horrible watch when you go in you don't know what you're stepping on . Over priced really wish the place had the taste . Doesn't matter who steps in your place how famous they can be we can all take a picture in them . But don't fool us with the taste . And prices and amount of meat please no Sean ratas

Jose Z.

Yelp
The flavor is usually pretty good but today my torta was burned on the bottom side. Fíjense bien y ya no estén quemando las tortas ‍ Also, our waitress Lety kept us waiting and was not very friendly in the beginning . She needs to put a smile on her face and talk a little slower so we can understand her. I felt like I was being rushed to place my order.

Zulma C.

Yelp
A burned crispy taco with tongue is $4.50 Each. I spent 9 dollars plus tax for 2 tacos A pound or carnitas is $10. I can make my own tacos. Also very greasy Never again

Marco R.

Yelp
La Salsa De Tomate en las tortas tiene mucho sabor a clavo y le quite el sabor a la salsa de tomate muchisimo
google avatar

Kim E.

Yelp
These tortas ahogadas are FIRE! I got medium but I recommend you get them without hot sauce . You can add it yourself better . But they were really good just a bit spicy . The tacos dorados I also recommend .
google avatar

Lesley M.

Yelp
This place gave me food poisoning! Had to go to the hospital of how bad I was feeling after eating this! I ordered a torta de carnitas.
google avatar

Claudia L.

Yelp
I just got here from Rialto (2hrs away) and they are closed ‍(every Friday of Pascua) their info is not updated online and a pregnant lady has to take her cravings back home The food is excellent and takes my 5* but this time they failed me really hard
google avatar

Yelp
Una porquería el birote parece que estás mordiendo plástico, peor que un birote de supermercado, bajo mucho de calidad todo en Chago!
