My first time trying Puerto Rican food and if this is typical, I'm all about it. New and interesting flavors with some of the best service in Austin. Very welcoming and helpful with making good choices from their menu. El Jibarito Sampler was really cool. Everything on the plate was new to me and all were excellent. Queso Frito...same business. It's basically fried cheese and you can't go wrong there. Chagos Pernil Asado was a great entree! There's parking on the left side of the restaurant if the front is full..

The best puertorican food we have found in Texas! So glad we found a place that reminds us of home! Brought my family on Thursday and had to come back with more family on Saturday. Food was very authentic and flavorful just like it should be, love the sorrullitos, tostones, churrasco. Had the piña coladas and sangría on both occasions and for dessert the cheese flan and tembleque. Highly recommend Chagos if you are in the mood for authentic puertorican food or just great food!

This has consistently been our favorite date night place for years, and we often take visitors and new comers to Austin here. The setting is homely and we've often interacted with the owners here. They're fun people, and it reflects in the vibe of the restaurant and more importantly, the food. Since I'm a vegetarian, my favorite for years is the Paella Vegetariana, and now they have many more vegetarian and vegan options (like trifongo) to the menu. Just ask. You cannot leave until you've had their desserts- the flan tembleque and tres leche cake are highly recommended! Do dine in if you can, and you'll be happy to have found this hidden gem in Austin, with upbeat music!

The food was good but different for me. I am not a fan of tomatoes so I found it a little too much for me but my son loved his Paella. Since my meet content is limited to chicken, I couldn't try it since they had beef in it. The food is definitely different but I do see many regular customers so I am pretty sure it is good for many but just not fussy old me. The service was also good.

The service was timely and pleasant. I love how attentive our waiter was. Had good communication and recommendations. Food was hot and full of flavor! I haven't eaten shrimp mofongo since a trip to PR in 2016. The juices from the garlic sauce were on point 👌🏾👌🏾 order everything lol #teamplatano

My first time coming to this spot! Man oh man...the best Puerto Rican food in Austin! I made sure to tell Chago himself how good the food was! I had Chagos Pernil Asado, Monfongo with Garlic Oil & Chicken, and Piña Colada....soo good!! Staff is welcoming and friendly! Definitely coming back because I have a crush on Lil Chago 😁😍 and the food is amazing!

We had one of the most AMAZING MEALS! It was absolutely delicious. The steak was juicy,the shrimp was cooked perfect and the Red beans and rice were to die for ! When we opened everything we were a little intimidated because there was an array of sauces and we were not confident what went with what. However, we found ALL the flavors worked so well together. Highly recommend this place it’s amazing! We will definitely be back.

Hole in the wall vibe, super friendly family run business, really DELICIOUS food. It is a bit pricier than I would expect considering considering ambiance but the food is really quite worth it. We got the yucca with garlic sauce, my husband got a skirt steak Mofongo, and I got the pulled pork. My normal complaint about pulled pork is that is it dry; you will not find that problem here. The pork is juicy and flavorful and so is the rice, especially mixed with the jalapeño sauce they gave us. Everything we ate was very delicious. We came on a Wednesday and it was not busy at all which we prefer... I would give it 4.5 stars but Google does not allow it. Considering what a good experience we had and that it is a family run local business I will give it the full 5 stars.

This restaurant is no longer open. It was supposed to move but never has reopened. Sad it was sooooo good.

It's really hard to find authentic puertorrican food but I thankfully came across Chago's and it was like being right back home. The food is so flavorful and delicious and the owners are incredibly welcoming. If you're looking for authentic Caribbean food you have to visit Chago's!

Everyone was so friendly here and the food was good! Everything came out hot despite the Mother's Day crowd. This was my first time having Puerto Rican Food and it did not disappoint. The appetizers were our favorite. The passion fruit juice was so refreshing and the queso frito is a must! I enjoyed the mofongo. The shrimp was prepared perfectly and went well with the tomato based soup. If you're looking to try PR Food, I would say this is a good spot to try. Lots of other PRs in the house and several people I know also vouch for its near authenticity.

Arrived here on a Wednesday evening with a friend, they have a small parking lot in the front and I believe additional parking spots in the back of the restaurant. We were greeted so kindly by the friendliest staff. Our waiter helped us tremendously with what to order, which was appreciated since it was our first time dining there and the menu is pretty extensive. We ended up enjoying all the dishes we ordered, especially the Puerto Rican Paella - this is a MUST DO! The flavors were amazing and the meats were deliciously tender. Was also introduced to mofongos during this visit, which was a nice treat.

First time visit last Sunday and this place is amazing! Great surprise thanks to friends who recommended we give it a try. Very authentic food, super friendly staff and reasonably priced. We ordered alcapurrias (to share), I went for the mofongo with carne frita paired with a glass of coquito - seasonal eggnog (Puerto Rican style) served during the Christmas season. Hubby enjoyed his plate of carne frita with white rice and beans. Everything ordered was spot on - brought back childhood memories of my abuelita's cooking. Sadly we didn't have room for dessert - next time. I can't wait to bring my relatives here - definitely recommend!

We stopped in here for lunch today because we were in the area. I'm originally from Florida and have not had Puerto Rican food since I left 1.5 years ago. This food hit the spot. We ordered the pernil and the Puerto Rican paella. They both come with a house salad that had the best cilantro dressing. The pernil pork was nice and juicy but the Puerto Rican paella was the best thing we ate. It was loaded with meat and had tons of flavor. My favorite thing about the menu is on the bottom right hand side it tells you about food allergies. My husband has multiple food allergies and while he's normally good about navigating a menu and staying away from Allergic foods it was nice to read instead of asking lots of questions. We will definitely be back to eat our way around the menu Covid- we dined in (to go was also available), tables were well spaced, staff had masks, plenty of hand sanitizer around the restaurant and paper 1 time use menus.

Guys this place is so fire!!!! Don't ever leave Austin without trying this place!!!! I got the Mofongo with Carne Frita and holy shit it was THE BOMB!!!!! That garlic wine sauce is phenomenal!!! Amazing food here!!!!!

It has been about three years since we ate here. This was one of our favorite restaurants in Austin and it still is. Same great food and can't speak highly enough of the family operating Chago's. It is like we are part of their family whoever we are there. Come support them and you will be impressed. Absolutely delicious.

Coming from NY, since I've been in Texas, this has been my only place to get Pernil asado. If you need a great home cooked meal, Chagos is the place to be! Everything on the menu is to die for. They even have a passion fruit home made Juice, as well as the piña colada (which you can request with no alcohol !) also homemade!! Sheesh ! Even the home made dressing for the salad is amazing. They take their time and cater to you, for dine in and take out !!! Even though I live 25 min away, I make the drive for my go-to place !!!

This is the best Puerto Rican food in Austin! I'm Puerto Rican and was looking for some comfort food and Im so glad we found this place. Everything is very Authentic and fresh and the staff is so friendly! The tostones were perfectly cooked (and huge!) and the sauce it came with was delicious! I got the mofongo with the garlic sauce and fried pork and it was perfection, reminded me of what I would eat in PR! I can't recommend it enough! I also got an extra side of arroz con gandules (Pigeon Pea Rice) and its the best Ive found at any Caribbean restaurant. My boyfriend got the pork chop and it was so good he wanted another! Also we got 2 pina coladas to go and they packed them up really well and even gave us 2 slices of pineapple and 2 umbrellas! We were too full for dessert but we are coming back to get the tembleque. Everyone who works there is so friendly And there are so many regulars who come which is really sweet. We definitely will be coming back!

Very much closed and shuttered. Looks like it's been empty and abandoned for a while. Not so much a strike against the business as it is for Yelp: very Disappointed that Yelp lists it as open for business.

So we were watching someone on YouTube eating Cuban sandwiches and decided we had to get one. My friend recommended this place and I placed an order over the phone. The lady who answered was super nice and the food was ready when I arrived. The staff continued to be awesome when I got there and when I ate that Sandwich I was truly blown away. It was the best Cuban sandwich I've had in over 10 years, that roast pork was fire . It took me back to my childhood in Miami, 10/10 would recommend.

Delicious and authentic Latin American food. My husband is Venezuelan and he attested to the authenticity! We both had the fricasé de pollo and an order of yuca frita with mojo de ajo.

This place has legit the best food in the entire town. So tender and flavorful, you can tell that these guys know what they're doing. I missed jibaritos from Chicago so I googled if there were any in Austin... and this place EXCEEDED my expectations!!! You just have to go there and try their food, I guarantee you'll love it. Exceptional service too, if you don't know anything about the cuisine the waiters will explain everything to you and everything truly sounds so delicious. I will definitely be coming back to try everything they have on the menu! If I could give this place 10 stars I would!!!

Our 1st visit today, boy we were impressed. Food just like we have in PR. We had bolitas de yuca, amarillos y queso frito con salsa de guayaba. Delicioso!!! I had sancocho, full of flavor, tender beef & plenty of root vegetables. Just like my Mami's. Pique gave it extra touch. Cola champagne on point. Tembleque to close, yum!!! Great service & music. A little piece of island in Texas, will def be back.

Chago Caribbean Cuisine is a gem that is second to none in food and customer service. This husband and wife team are simply amazing. I first visited the restaurant a couple weeks ago with a plan to ease myself into the menu. The waiter was so well versed in the menu items and took the time to breakdown not only what was in the meal but how it was prepared. I ordered the Puerto Rican Paella and the pulled pork and beef pastelillos. The paella had a balance of meat, veggies and rice and was cooked to perfection. The food was extremely flavorful and for a Puerto Rican food novice, I felt I made a good initial choice. I returned this past week to grab a few of the pastelillos. My son had commented that the food was "amaze" and that he wanted some more. It was pouring down rain, but I was determined to get my fix. I walked in as soon as they opened and was met with such hospitality. I placed a simple order 2 beef and 1 pulled pork. I tend to favor the beef more than the pork. Unfortunately the fryer was turned off so I had to wait an additional 15 minutes, which was no problem since they made it a point to offer me something as I waited. I felt like I was sitting at my nana's house waiting for her best dish getting full on snacks. I had once again taken it to go cause I was in-between meetings. I navigated the rain and was in my car turning around in the parking lot when I heard knocking on my trunk. The wife ran out to tell me that they had messed up the order and gave me 2 pork and 1 beef. She informed me that they were fixing it and to stay in the car, she would bring it back out. Okay...one they noticed the error, two it is raining, three she runs out and gets soaked to tell me they are going to fix the order they didn't get right. WOW talk about customer satisfaction!! I waited patiently and she returns to the car and hands me a container. Much to my surprise they had made the entire order again! Talk about customer service. I have noticed a decline in customer service at restaurants and I was more than surprised by this experience. If you are looking for a great Puerto Rican restaurant this unassuming spot in North Austin on Lamar is so worth your time and effort. Prices are reasonable, availability of parking isn't great even with a small lot in the rear so expect to get creative, but it is worth every effort. I will be back and will be back OFTEN!

When I first passed by here I thought it looked kind of run down from the outside, but my friend and i decided to give it a try for dinner after seeing the positive reviews. There were no issues getting a table around 8 on a Wednesday evening. The service was quick and friendly. My eyes were instantly drawn to the mofongo, which I decided to order, but there were some very creative items on the menu. In particular the sandwich with plantains instead of bread is definitely on my mind for a return visit. As for the mofongo, I had the braised chicken with chalo sauce. The chicken was super juicy and was very well seasoned. The sauce blended together perfectly with the seasoning on the chicken. The mofongo itself was okay, a little too on the dry side for me, but it still tasted very good after getting it covered in the sauce. Overall I think it's worth giving a try if you're feeling Puerto Rican food and I would recommend giving some of their unusual menu items a try.

Chago's gets 2 thumbs all the way up! We decided to go there for lunch as part of our Anniversary celebration. They welcomed us with warm smiles and cool drinks. Chago's is a a place that makes you feel like family. The food is good, made to order, fresh, authentic, and did I say, GOOD. We had the Monfogo that took us all the way back to Puerto Rico where we first fell in love with Monfongo. If you haven't been to Chago's get in your car and drive to Austin, Santiago and the family will take good care of you.

Consistently delicious. Every time I visit Austin, Chagos is a must. A little taste of Puerto Rico here in the states, which is is a hard find.

Love the food here! Very nice family owned and ran restaurant! A bit small, so noise level was very loud. The only reason I only gave them 4 stars was because their hours are not consistent via the sign and on line. All and all always a great place to go with the family!

This is our second time coming and it was fantastic!! We live out of town and stumbled upon it the last time we visited and it was a priority to come back! Paella, tostones, pastelillos, mofungo-authentic Puerto Rican style. DELICIOUS!

Legit as hell. I'd only sampled small portions of PR food and made it my mission to get more acquainted. Chango's did not let me down. In a city drowning in tacos and queso, it was a treat to get something different and not as heavy. That shit is . Expand your horizons and get this in your belly. I bought $40 worth of food and not even kind of mad.

My children and I just had some of the best Puerto Rican food I have had in sometime, at least since our trip to Puerto Rico in 2016 The waitress was super kind and friendly And the restaurant is extremely clean any environment is pleasant I highly recommend!

Super delicioso! Primera ves que mi esposo y Yo encontramos un restaurant Puertoriqueño con sabor de verdad. Hemos ido a varios como en San Antonio, Dallas, Houston etc pero la verdad ninguno se asemeja al sabor esquisito que tiene Chago's ,nos quedamos sorprendidos y con el trato de la señora aun mas. Nos trato de maravilla y la verdad me hiso llorar por que mi esposo le dijo que Yo estaba de Cumpleaños y ella regreso rapido con un riquisimo cake cantandome Cumpleaños, para mi fue un momento tan especial jamas lo olvidare. Lo recomiendo % no se arepentiran. BTW Yo pedi sancocho y mi esposo pollo en fricase, para chuparce los dedos, mucho con demasado, super rico ,no puedo esperar a volver pronto. Bendiciones siempre a la señora y Chago's Caribbean restaurant.

We came for the mofongo, but the pulled pork jibarito stole the show! It had a good thick plaintain, sturdy for the sandwich, and the pork was so juicy and tender. Big ups to the uncle cooking in the back. The appetizers were nicely cooked, and wasnt too greasy at all. The small portion appetizer were perfect starters, leaving room for the main dishes and equally enticing anticipation. The mofongo's pork was also tender, but the mofongo itself I wish had a crispier shell. (Just like in puerto rico) The food was good and satisfying, the service was good. I wished to see more puertorican presentation in the meal. Maybe serving the mofongo in the traditional mortar and pestle the mashed it in. The tres leches did not disappoint! All in all the food tastes pretty good, don't expect flare, but expect good tasting food.

Found this place on Yelp looking for some authentic Puerto Rican food...and wow, this place hit the spot! The service was amazing, they were so hospitable from the moment we entered the restaurant, and the food was incredible! We got the Camarones Salteados (our favorite dish) and the Chagos Pernil Asado. Would ask for a side of the tomato creole sauce to pour over some of the pulled pork, and can't wait to come back and try the Paella next time!!!! We love it here and will definitely be coming back!

Had the braised chicken mofongo, which was pretty good. The chicken was very tender and the mofongo wasn't dry which is difficult to achieve. The tostones were great too. The garlic sauce on the side was a bit too tangy and not as garlicky as one would like. The yuca side dish was my least favorite but only because it was quite bland. The queso frites was very good too. The sweet sauce it came with gave it the perfect balance. The tres leches cake was drier than the typical would be. The layers and walnut covered icing was unnecessary but a creative touch. Not too sweet either.

Chagos is really some of the best food in Austin. It is always delicious and the staff is friendly. The Fricase de Pollo is my go to. The slow-cooked chicken is hard to pass up no matter what I plan when I walk in. We always take a meal to go because we can't make up our minds. This is undoubtedly the most underrated restaurant in the area.

We were on a Latin kick this weekend and decided to try this little hole in the wall for dinner! Absolutely will come back again! The waiter Manny was super nice. We started off with some appetizers: Pastelillos which we got half ground beef and the other half pork & cheese. The dipping sauce paired with it was like a barbecue base and was fantastic. We also got the Bolitas de Yucca which was small fried round balls made do Yucca. For our entree, my daughter loves fried dish and had the chillo frito paired with rice. She ate everything to the bone! I had the Puerto Rican paella. It was very flavorful. The dressing that came with the salad was a vinaigrette base. Again, delicious! My significant other ordered the pulled pork with rice and salad. The pork was very moist and filling. We will come back again!

Wonderful food and exceptional service. This was my first time at a Caribbean restaurant, and I was thankful they had a sampler appetizer option. We were able to try many different items and each one was delicious, the maduros (fried sweet plantains) were my favorite! The paella was fantastic and I highly recommend trying some of their great drinks. Like passion fruit juice or the picture-perfect piña colada. I will absolutely be returning soon, and next time I will have to save room for dessert. I can't wait to try the flan!

Whew....I don't even know where to begin. One of the things I miss about NYC is eating good Puerto Rican food. This restaurant made me feel at home for real! The food tasted like the food I ate in one of my close friend's kitchen. First, I think someone's abuela flew in from Puerto Rico just to make my food. I had the Pechuga De Pollo. The garlic cilantro cream sauce for the mofongo was sooooo delicious. The chicken was great. My mother had the Pernil Asado. I tasted it, and it was very delicious too. We both had an order of plantains, which were just right. If you're in the Austin area and want to eat real good food, I highly recommend Chago's. It's truly authentic Puerto Rican food!

Had dinner here with my family last Saturday that was SO good I'm still thinking about it (I had the Puerto Rican Paella). Chago's does amazing Puerto Rican food, have the most helpful attentive staff and a comfortable atmosphere! If you love Latin food this is the place to go! P.S. many of their staff are bilingual - I can't begin to explain how wonderful of an experience this made for my Abuela from Venezuela who got to be spoken to in Spanish the whole evening. We will be back very soon!

Best Puerto Rican food in Austin. Empanadas are wonderful plus the sauce. The mofungo is legit and beans and rice are the best.

As someone that comes from a Dominican family, Caribbean food is not common in Austin so this place is a gem. The owners are good people and it's a family run business so you feel the warmth. Service is be a little slow but the food is worth it. I always get without fail their mofongo yum

If you are looking for real Puerto Rican food in Austin, Chago's is the place. A very modest family run business, but food is excellent. It seems like you are eating at your grandmother's house. The mofongos are excellent. The fricase de pollo is superb. Is a business worth patronizing to recognize the merits of the family runing it.

I am immensely thankful to try Puerto Rican/ Caribbean food for the first time at Chagos, but I left a bit disappointed. I ordered the braised chicken mofongo. The braised chicken consists of pieces of chicken in a sauce and the mofongo is smashed plantains. I enjoyed how tasty the mofongo is, an inspiration to substitute mashed potatoes! The braised chicken reminded me a lot of chicken curry, but the really thin sauce and stiff chicken would not hold up at a South Indian functional gathering. The mofongo reminded me of something called cuppa which is made with yuca. From my personal experience, cuppa sticks together when cut through, like pommes aligot and is spiced. If you are looking for more, then I recommend asking for these things at a South Indian place. I also got the Tembleque, which is a coconut jello pudding, about six dollars for 1/4 cup. I really loved the cocoa powder dusting on the top. If you plan on going to a South Indian place, try out some coconut rice pudding. I'll be putting a cocoa powder dusting on all my coconut rice puddings from now on.

Very authentic tasty Caribbean food. I ordered the veggie paella and it was amazing! If you are vegetarian though, there aren't too many options other than the paella and some of the sides (yuca!). The yuca was hella good annnnd their sangria is bomb! My partner on the other hand order a fish dish that was $$$ for the small portion of the dish. We will not be ordering that again. We will probably stick with the paella dishes because those were excellent. Also I had to yell in the restaurant to my partner sitting right next to me because it's very noisy for some reason. I want to go back but the only thing that I'd order from the main menu would be the veggie paella since other stuff is a bit pricey and this one of the only vegetarian options. I want to try more of their drinks next time though !

A friend of Puerto Rican descent highly recommended this place. He told us the best thing on the menu to him was the pulled pork and mofongo with the garlic wine sauce. We followed his suggestion and we loved every last bite! We also split a couple pastelillos, one pulled pork with monterrey cheese and another with ground beef and cheese, they were very tasty and almost as good as the mofongo. Great service from Marely....we will be back!

I've been coming to Chago's for years now and I'm not quite sure why it's taken me this long to write a review because the food and service is ALWAYS phenomenal. If I were to recommend any one thing on the menu, it'd have to be one of the Mofongos. My personal favorite is the mesitas fritas de pollo mofongo paired with their garlic wine sauce, which brings it all together perfectly. Regardless though, their menu has quite a few options and you're sure to find something you'll fall in love with. Also their portions are great for the price. It's enough food to fill you up and possibly have some leftovers to take home with you. This place is truly a hidden gem in Austin and everyone living in or visiting Austin needs to give them a try. Be warned though, you might start craving their food randomly and become a regular like myself lol.

Non-Rabbits: This will be the most useless Yelp Review ever. Rabbits: Your ship has come in! * * * This is a review of the salad offerings at Chago's Caribbean Cuisine. Who the hell orders salad at a Puerto Rican Restaurant? A Yelp Reviewer who put on sixty-eight hundred pounds on New Year's Eve, that's who. But just letting you know, salad is an actual option at Chago's. Their salad is large and has a really good home made mustard dressing courtesy of the cook. The tomatoes are pre-gassed tomatoes and there are a lot of them. But they won't kill you and the greens and dressing are just fine. So you can stay healthy while you watch everyone else having fun, eating incredible Puerto Rican food.

I love the pernil asado and the mofongo con camarones; owners are great and they even gave me a free soda with my order; usually order to-go but they have dining-in as well.

When we moved to Austin 7 years ago the 1st thing we looked for was a Puerto Rican restaurant. We love Puerto Rico and my father in law was born and raised there. If you love authentic Puerto Rican cuisine this place won't disappoint!!! Everything we have ever had has been incredible! This if a small, family owned business that has been around for the last 10 years and they treat you like family everytime you walk through the door. If I could give them 100 stars I would!
