It can’t be understated, the food (and coffee) here are phenomenal. It’s like I was transported back to my childhood with my mother’s cooking. Nothing is dry, everything is delicious, and service is amazing. The owners and staff are very attentive, quick, and open to chatting. Can’t beat the service nor quality of food , especially for the affordable price. This is a must visit spot!!! Highly recommend the vanilla cold brew…I had two.

Google
Ecuadorian that lived for a short time in San Francisco ☝🏻 I got to meet Chalo, who is an amazing person, he makes the place really cozy and welcoming for any Latino. Used to go with someone special I cherished memories with. Him, being born and raised in California, loved the place and the vibe. He totally felt right at home as well, no doubt. Great food, I’m missing the dulce de leche latte. Can’t wait to go visit again.

Google
I have to say, I fell in love with empanadas, especially the spicy chicken and beef. They're amazing and delicious! I would rate them a 1000000/10. Also, the best churros I've tried so far in San Francisco. Highly recommend!!

Andrea Chan

Google
We tried the empanadas and churros and loved them all! The owner (Gonzalo) was super friendly and we really enjoyed chatting with him. If you're looking for authentic Argentine empanadas, this is the place!

Google
My brother and I just visited Chalos today—and can't wait to return again! Their breakfast burrito was delicious, but what really stole the show were their empanadas. My brother had the chalos empanada with ham, cheese, and bell peppers, and I had the champignones (mushroom) empanada. Both were SO tasty and flavorful! The owner was friendly as well! I highly recommend this place.

Google
Love Chalos! I’m Argentinian and these are among the best empanadas I’ve ever had. The carne empanadas in particular are amazing but you can’t go wrong. This family owned business knows their stuff. Nice vibes and great location. Feels like a slice of Buenos Aires!

Google
I’ve been wanting to try Chalos all year and finally got around to it, and I’m so glad I did. The empanadas are so flavorful. I got the top-rated sweet beef empanada, and my friend tried the chicken empanada. We got the fried versions, and I really recommend. The texture from the extra crunch elevates these empanadas to the next level. The staff are kind and able to recommend what to order if it’s your first time. Overall amazing experience!

Google
I wish I found this place sooner. I got the Breakfast Burrito with sausage and bacon. I also got the #1 Carne (baked), and #13 Mushroom and Cheese (Fried) Empanadas. All were excellent. Friendly and professional service. I'm coming back to try the rest of the empanadas, and I think the churros are calling my name too.

Yelp
If you're on the hunt for a true hidden gem in the Sunset, Chalos is the spot. The empanadas are hands down the highlight here--authentic, flavorful, and made with a lot of love. The experience started off on such a warm note. We were greeted by two people (later found out they're the owners) as soon as we walked in. They were super welcoming and friendly, and the guy took the time to educate us about the empanadas and the culture they come from. It's always cool to see people so passionate about what they do--it made us appreciate the food even more. And now we can pass that knowledge on to whomever. We basically followed what they used to do in his home country, where you get a variety of empanadas and you just pick at each and share amongst your tribe holding with a napkin. We tried a variety of empanadas, and honestly, you can't go wrong with any of them. But let me tell you--the Carne Dulce? Addicting AF. It's the perfect mix of savory and sweet that keeps you coming back for more. We started with one, and by the time we finished, we knew we needed more for the road. Yes, we ordered extras to-go, and no, we don't regret it. Now, about the empanada crispiness--man, these things are on another level. The outer crust has that perfect balance of golden, flaky crispness that holds together just right with every bite. It's not too thick, but it's sturdy enough to keep the filling in without falling apart. The moment you bite into it, the crunch hits, and you get that satisfying contrast to the tender, flavorful filling. It's a textural masterpiece. The vibe here is super chill too. They've got a nice indoor seating area and a cozy outdoor space with window seating where you can soak up that vitamin D while you snack. Perfect for a sunny SF day. 5/5 stars--Chalos is a must-visit if you're in the Sunset and for empanadas.

Yelp
Yummy breakfast burritos and empanadas!! All breakfast burritos should have tater tots like this one, it was soo good! I think this place is known for their empanadas, so I had to get a few empanadas to go. Although I didn't eat the empanadas fresh, they were just perfect after air frying it for a few mins the next day. The carne empanada was my fav one! Very friendly staff and lots of seating inside with lots of natural lighting. There's also a restroom all the way in the back too. Definitely recommend stopping by for some empanadas or breakfast burritos!

Yelp
We came here because we heard about their churros so we decided to give it a try. The ambiance of the place is modern. The person who took our order was nice enough to explain what was in the empanadas. We ordered the Cappuccino, Churros, and Carne Empanada. The Cappuccino, I was told wasn't made well and didn't taste good. The Churros were good, it came out hot with a dusting of powdered sugar. The Carne Empanada was tasty with our option of being fried which made the skin more crunchy and I think it is better than the baked option. They had a sign about preferring a no electronics environment which gave a feeling of hesitation to go in. I may come back to get take out.

Yelp
We've been to Chalos before and it continues to be just as amazing. The empanadas are soo good. The crust is buttery and the filling so delicious. What I love is that there are so many options for the empanadas. You can pick and choose the flavors and that you want. But honestly, you can't go wrong with whatever you choose. Each of the empanadas are stamped with letters to indicate what the filling is inside too.
google avatar

Yelp
Yum! These are the best empanadas my husband and I have had so far! We tried the corn, chicken, spicy beef, mushroom, and ham & cheese. They were all very tasty. We tried the fried and baked version of the spicy beef and prefer the fried version. The customer service was great and staff was really friendly and helped us decide on which type of empanadas to get. Our favorite is the spicy beef, but they were all yummy! The ambiance is nice and cozy. We also tried the churros and they were pretty good as well. We will definitely be back for their empanadas!

Yelp
I've been to Chalos before for empanadas and churros that's yummy full of flavor! I saw the breakfast burritos on social media and people raved about it so I had to try for myself. I was the the kiosk ordering with a line building behind me! I panicked and just quickly picked the sausage egg tator tots one. The tator tots were perfectly crispy! But honestly this burrito really needed sauce. I don't remember if there was option to add sauce or not. But it really needed sour cream and hot sauce, just some kind of sauce. I think with sauce it would have been an ok burrito to a great one!

Yelp
I saw the pictures (and reviews) talking about the breakfast burrito, and I was sold. Swung in around 9:30 on a Sunday and it wasn't crazy busy. Nice spacious spot with lots of seating and a solid menu. We got the #1 Carne empanada and a breakfast burrito with breakfast sausage, along with a hot mocha with oat milk. The burrito is one of the better ones I've had! The tater tots inside are perfectly fried and crisp, the eggs are not overcooked, and I loved the slight char on the tortilla. Half was just enough food for me to share with my boyfriend. The mocha was actually not too sweet, which was a pleasant surprise. There is one small bathroom. Nothing crazy, but it was clean and stocked.

Yelp
Although the menu is a bit expensive, the food quality is pretty solid. I can't rationalize $5+ / empanada so I usually go for a breakfast burrito. You can get it with sausage or bacon and they are HUGE. My favorite part is that they come with crunchy tater tots inside. They serve a pretty good sightglass cold brew I like and the staff is always super friendly. Order online for quick pick up and take it down the street to the enjoy at the beach!

Yelp
We were at a Night Market in SF, and stumbled upon their pop-up stall. They were so nice and friendly. We tried some samples of their empanadas and were hooked. Baked Empanadas - Mushroom (2) - Sweet Beef (1) Both were deliciously full of flavor. I liked the Mushroom but my wife liked the beef flavor more.

Yelp
i'm on the hunt to find the best breakfast burrito in SF. i know chalos specializes in argentine-style empanadas (i'll have to come back to try those), but don't sleep on their breakfast burrito! it comes with eggs, cheese, salsa, and tater tots for $11.50. adding bacon or sausage is +$2. the tortilla looked flame grilled, which is a plus in my book! this is a sizable burrito that will keep you full because they pack it with tots (whether that's good or bad is up to you lol). it was a bit dry for my liking with all the tots, but the tapatio came in handy. you also get the option of mild or hot salsa -- we both asked for hot, but there was no heat to be found. so we used the tapatio for the extra kick and to make it less dry. their dulce de leche latte was also yummy, but on the pricey side for the size. overall a solid breakfast burrito option if you're in the area!

Yelp
This spot is a hidden gem in the parkside neighborhood. Although it is tucked away, their empanadas are very authentic and they have an amazing breakfast burrito. Having studied abroad in Argentina, I am always looking for authentic empanadas in my city and this place hits the spot. Their breakfast burrito (I'm unsure why I haven't seen it on doordash) has the crunchy tatertots in there and is a decent size. I prefer the breakfast burritos with the tatertots as it adds a crunchy texture when eating. It is one of the best I've had in the city and I've tried a ton so far. Definitely a fun foodie try in the city!

Yelp
Came here for a quick breakfast the empanadas were delicious. I tried the fried version and the baked version. Coffee was great.

Yelp
Came here for breakfast burritos but ended up getting one to share when we saw the vast empanadas selection. We ordered everything to go and enjoyed it by the water since this place isn't too far up from Ocean Beach. We went with the sausage breakfast burrito, it was loaded up with crunchy tots and lots of sausage. And, it was HUGE! So happy we decided to share one. The sausage was a very herbaceous, which my boyfriend loved, but I thought seemed out of place with the other flavors of the burrito. I think if it had more salsa inside and not just the pico, I would've liked it a little more. Nonetheless, it was still a great burrito, I'd just go with the bacon next time. For empanadas we went with a Carne dulce (sweet beef), jamón & queso, and champinones (mushroom). We were given the option of fried or baked and went with baked. My boyfriend really enjoyed all of the empanadas, and I loved the jamón a queso and champinones, with the champinones being my winner. It was so full of flavor, I wish I had gotten my own of that one. Service was friendly and food fresh, would give this place another visit!

Yelp
This hit so hard after my run on the Great Highway! My boyfriend and I ordered the breakfast burritos and it had everything that I love - eggs, cheese, sausage, tater tots (super crispy!), and pico. I also ordered a coffee and my boyfriend got a mocha, both of which tasted great. The service was also very great and the workers were friendly. Will definitely be back to try their empanadas!
google avatar

Yelp
This is IT! The best breakfast burrito I have had in the Bay. Maybe THE best breakfast burrito in the Bay. And not to mention the incredible empanadas. I've gotten both the baked and fried and love both. The owner is so sweet and it is such a great spot. Bonus: Martenillis in the glass bottle!!! Next time I'll take pictures of the food ... it's just too good the phone can't eat first.
google avatar

Yelp
Came for the breakfast burrito, and it did not disappoint! Loved how crisp the inside and outside of it was. Evenly packed with each ingredient for each bite. Restaurant also has a lot of room to dine in, and lounge while you drink your coffee. But definitely don't sleep on their breakfast burrito! They only serve it until 2 pm!
google avatar

Kearra B.

Yelp
The best breakfast burritos in the Bay? I would say so! Chalos has the most incredible breakfast burritos I've ever tasted. They're perfectly crispy, and hands down the best I've had. I tried the bacon burrito, and it was absolutely amazing. I can't wait to try the sausage one next! The churros are delicious and pair wonderfully with their yummy coffee. The ambiance is cozy with a good amount of seating and the staff are friendly. I loved my experience at Chalos and can't wait to come back.

Yelp
Seriously the cutest and coziest neighborhood spot in the Sunset! The interior is bright and welcoming and the staff is incredibly friendly. We tried a couple of their empanadas, churros, and breakfast burrito. They have both baked and fried empanadas and I really liked both! I've never had fried empanadas before and it wasn't too heavy, perfectly crispy on the outside, but comforting on the inside. Some of my favorites were the spicy chicken, mushroom, and ham and cheese empanadas. The breakfast burrito is also perfect, for $10 you get a huge burrito that's stuffed with fluffy eggs, crispy tots, cheese, and pico de gallo.
google avatar

Yelp
I would call this a semi-hidden gem. I am only ever in this neighborhood for something food- related and this day was no exception. It was rainy rainy day in SF and we had a car, so we headed out. The place was pretty empty for lunchtime, and they keep the door open for venting so wear a sweater. We ordered 3 empanadas to split the 1st meat one (basic), the 3rd meat one (spicy) and the sleeper hit the mushroom and cheese, which was our favorite. You have a choice of baked or fried -- what dummy would order baked? All three of ours were fried, and all three tasted great, but we both voted the mushroom and cheese to be the clear winner, very cheesy and umami. We also got churros that were served hot outta the fryer and added dulce de leche. The owner was super nice. Would definitely come back.

Yelp
Having my friend reschedule on me, had my spirits down. Going out anyway and coming here was the best idea I ever had. The ambiance was relaxing, as the service was great! The man in the front was kind enough to point out that one order of churros comes with 3, when I was about to order more. And was nice enough to bring my coffee over to the table I was sitting at since it wasn't that busy. It was my first time having churros with dipping sauce and it nailed my sweet tooth. It wasn't too sweet to the point of being sick of it. The sugar stuck on pretty well too! Eating it while drinking coffee was a perfect pair! I also ordered a carne empanada and I wished I had ordered more, but I became too shy to ask. Since I ordered twice because I forgot to order a drink. It was packed with filling and you can either get it baked or fried. I had it baked and it didn't take long to have my order ready at all. Overall, this place is damn good!

Yelp
Great ambiance, friendly people and clean environment. Most authentic empanadas I've had since Spain. The owner made an excellent recommendation!
google avatar

Yelp
Love their breakfast burrito and deep fried beef empanadas. I will be going back when they come back from vacation :)
google avatar

Helen L.

Yelp
Four years since covid when i bought a gift card to boost businesses. Congrats for surviving and thriving. You are part of a neighborhood business. A cool place to hang out. Promoting o wifi so people can actually talk and enjoy each other's company. They must have 12 or more kinds of empanadas to chose from. I picked beef, sweet beef (2nd best), spinach (1st choice) , and mushroom. They were a bit salty since im super sensitive to salt. They were tasty and super filled. I had their breakfast burrito with eggs, crunchy tater tots, and sausage. Hugh and yummy. It's a winner. Love tater tots. I ignored the saltiness. It was so big, i ate in two seatings. Fresh is always better. The best thing is the mild pico de gallo inside.
google avatar

Jeanie L.

Yelp
Cute neighborhood spot with sweet owners. Definitely try their mushroom empanada! Come support this small business on Taraval Street!
google avatar

Kelly S.

Yelp
4.5 stars So yummy! The churros was not at all what I was expecting it was harder and less sweet. Pretty good though! Did feel like the extra cinnamon is needed. The empanadas were so yummy baked! Soft, crunchy, and filled!! Staff were also so friendly and the ambiance is super cute. There's also "no phone" policy for people sitting by the window sill in which I think is so smart! Definitely coming back soon for more empanadas!
google avatar

Kaveh H.

Yelp
Hands down my favorite empanada spot in the city. Often times I feel like empanada shops can err on the side of being too greasy but this place somehow manages to incorporate good ingredients and flavor without imparting any greasiness and leaving you feel gross and heavy. All the empanadas were excellent, although the spicy beef was probably my favorite. Kids loved the churros and the coffee drinks were spot on as well. Owned by super nice people too, in case that sort of thing is important to you. Definitely plan on coming back next time I'm anywhere close to the neighborhood and will likely try the burrito to see their take on it.
google avatar

Yelp
Wow I was not expecting this to be so dang tasty! I stumbled across Chalos as I was super early for my interview.i figured maybe get a coffee and possibly an empanada. Oh boy was I taken back. The staff here is super friendly and recommended that I get the latte. Then I sprung for the spicy empanada. The vibe here is nice lots of seating but not over crowded. I sat at the big table so I could go over my notes. But instead I started to write this review. The latte came out nice and hot with amazing taste. Then a few minutes later the empanada arrived. Very crispy but a soft crisp the filling was delicious very flavorful.Well if I get the job in the area I will be a regular!

Yelp
The coffee here was good--definitely the highlight of my visit. However, the breakfast burrito was just okay. It wasn't bad, but it didn't really stand out or have the flavor I was hoping for. The service was friendly and good, and the ambiance was clean. I might stop by again for the coffee but would probably try something else on the menu next time.
google avatar

J. M.

Yelp
Love chalos. Love their dulce de leche latte and they have a great selection of empanadas + churros which are off the hook. The owner is great and always welcoming. Highly recommend if you need a snack.
google avatar

Artemis I.

Yelp
Randomly wandered into this cute little coffee shop only to find out it's so much more! Owner is super friendly and from the first time we went, he's remembered us! Coffee is great, I love the bomba. But we came back for the empanadas! They are moist, flavorful and my whole family loves them!
google avatar

Caitlyn M.

Yelp
Chalos is a great neighborhood spot for casual eats and coffee! They have a good amount of seating inside and 2 benches outside. The empanadas and churros are excellent and freshly fried/baked. Freshly made churros are the best! I also tried the dulce de leche coffee and I loved it. I'm normally not a big coffee drinker either.

Chloe G.

Yelp
The baked mushroom empanada was okay very cheesy but for $6.50.... The prices are way too high for the size of the empanada. The churros were good and crunchy. The (mild) breakfast burrito with bacon was kind of bland and mostly tater tot.
google avatar

Nick C.

Yelp
Between the great coffee that competes with the likes of any "boutique" coffee shop in the city and breakfast/snack menu that offers such a unique product, Chalos has become one of my go to spots in the outer sunset. While waiting for dim sum across the street, my hunger/hangover was in dire need of something fried/cheesy/meat filled. I opted for the fried empanada with meat and another with cheese and I was not disappointed in the least bit. Both were made to order and came out piping hot and well seasoned. Best of all, the cappuccino I ordered was a perfect accompaniment. The drink had plenty of coffee flavor that wasn't washed out by the dairy or flavoring of choice. The best part is the price is not the same level of ridiculousness we've all come to expect from the city (see my review on tartine if you want an idea). I don't remember Chalos being a longstanding establishment but I sure hope they become one here.
google avatar

Orawan S.

Yelp
First time trying this place and really impressive. The shop located in the Sunset neighborhood and inside the shop was bright and clean with the plenty of seat inside. Staff were friendly and helpful with the order options. I tried baked empanadas (there have fried and baked) and they were delicious. Crispy outside and flavorful inside. The number 6 (corn) was my wife favorite now!! and I love their ham and cheese as well. Also try Iced latte and got high quality of coffee beans from Sight Glass Coffee and that was amazing. Churros are a must!! Crispy and delicious. Reasonable price and definitely be back. Highly recommended!!

Yelp
Chalos Cafe in the Outer Sunset is a true hidden gem that I'm delighted to recommend, making it the perfect spot for a quick, satisfying meal. The empanadas, bursting with flavor, are a definite highlight. Whether you opt for the beef or spicy beef, each bite is a delight, perfectly seasoned and fried to perfection. And the churros with a side of dulce de leche? Absolutely divine a must-try combination that's sure to satisfy any sweet tooth. But the delights don't stop there. The breakfast burrito, a new addition to the menu, is a true winner. Packed with eggs, cheese, pico de gallo, tater tots, and a generous serving of avocado, it's a flavorful and hearty way to start the day. The charred tortilla adds a unique twist that elevates the dish to perfection. In my opinion, it's a solid 10/10. Overall, Chalos Cafe offers not only delicious food but also a cozy atmosphere and welcoming service that make every visit a pleasure. It's a place I'll definitely be returning to - and recommending to friends and family alike.

Yelp
We love a good empanada, so we've been wanting try Chalos for a while. After a hike at Lands End, we finally made our way over here. We decided to get three to share as a snack and went with Baked Spicy Beef, Fried Beef, and Fried Spicy Chicken. We both thought these tasted fresh and that the filling was good. Our favorite was definitely the Baked Spicy Beef! Surprisingly, we actually liked the baked dough more than fried but both were good. The space itself is very spacious and clean.

S M.

Yelp
The breakfast burrito is incredibly greasy and nasty//Worst burrito ever//Paid $15 for burrito with tater tots, cheese, pico de gallo, and added avocado for $2 that I could not seem to find inside but a pinch of a drop//After showing staff burrito with no avocado, he advised, "we've never had an issue before," while looking at burrito and clearly not seeing it//Then staff asks cook if she put avo inside, which she replied, "yes"//1st and last visit for me//Customer service is everything to me alongside of great eats//This is neither//Same burrito I paid $15 for and my sis paid $10//SMH, both no es bueno//

Niles S.

Yelp
Very tasty. Everything is a hit. The Chalos latte, and empanada were fantastic. The churros are a little different than what you may be used to. They are nonetheless delicious. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Yelp
I recently tried Chalos' Empanadas and I'm absolutely blown away! These empanadas are a true taste of culinary artistry. Each bite bursts with flavor, and the variety of fillings is mind-blowing. From the classic beef to the Chalos special (artichoke, cheese, bell peppers and ham), there's something for everyone. The crust is perfectly flaky, and you can tell that every empanada is made with care and passion. The staff is warm and welcoming, making the whole experience even better. Chalos has become my go-to spot for a delicious, satisfying meal. Don't miss out on this gem!
google avatar

Joe H.

Yelp
Conveniently across from my vet. Love this spot for a couple empanadas and a draft beer. I try a different two each time a come. The #13 Champignones Empanada is my favorite.
google avatar

Mykah Denise L.

Yelp
I loved the empanadas :) Our order came out fresh with the perfect crust and flakiness. I really enjoyed the ham and cheese filling because of that "cheese pull" that came with each bite! I will definitely be coming back since there's a lot more items on the menu that I have yet to try!
google avatar

Travis H.

Yelp
You might come here for the empanadas but their breakfast burrito is hands down the best in San Francisco. I don't typically write reviews on Yelp but it was so good I felt the need to share!
google avatar

Vanessa O.

Yelp
Best empanadas of my life. "Everyday Empanadas" is their slogan--and yes, I would most certainly happily them eat everyday. Though it's not everyday that you find a great spot like this. 6/$35 via Doordash. Favorite was the Sweet Beef. Not sweet like bbq sauce or something...just sweet and savory and tasty all in one, I was very pleased with my choice. Mushroom was good, though packed with much more cheese than mushrooms. Spicy chicken and beef are good and primarily filled with a lot of meat, though that sweet beef was my favorite by far. The hubby ate the spinach and cheese before I could taste. Each empanada is labeled with a key on the top of the box, though for some reason it was really difficult for me to make out what the letters were on most of them. Churros with dulce de leche dipping sauce (3/~$7) were delicious after reheating after my delivery. Not as light as other churros may be, but slightly crispy on the outside with a soft interior, so it more than satisfied my carb craving. I was initially considering donuts, but boy am I happy I saw Chalos on Doordash and gave it a try instead.

Larrisa N.

Yelp
Very good empanadas! We have tried almost every flavor and our standouts are the onion and cheese empanada, mushroom, and sweet beef. Their breakfast burrito is a great portion size and tasty.
google avatar

Angela D.

Yelp
Neighborhood churros and empanadas! It's a great little spot and I've tried almost all the savory flavors. Good for a coffee and snack or to bring empanadas to a party! I love supporting this local business!
google avatar

Kathy L.

Yelp
Amazing little cafe--a chance drop in. This was my first time visit and I was curious about their empanadas. It's a large space, with both bench tables and small tables; comfy chairs--very inviting and welcoming. The ambiance is great! It can be a great place to meet up and hang out or just a place to chill, read a book with coffee and empanadas. This is a screen free zone--laptops, ipads, etc. are discouraged. I ordered 3 empanadas to try--the carne dulce (sweet beef), carne picante (spicy beef) & champignones (mushrooms). I thought all 3 tasted delicious. You have the option of having these fried or baked, but frying takes longer so I got the baked ones. The crust was not doughy. Each one is about the size of a hand and maybe 3 bites worth. I'll definitely have to go back to try more flavors.

Yelp
Came here yesterday to try the empanadas and came back today to have the breakfast burrito, churrros, and coffee ... and get more empanadas to take home! Love the food, service, and ambiance here.
