Some Big South LA Names Helped Reopen a Sofi-Adjacent Inglewood Bar - Eater LA

"In early August, Champ City Bar & Lounge shut down. The Inglewood bar’s status was shrouded in mystery until it reopened on August 9 with a handful of prominent restaurant owners from South LA’s restaurant community. That group includes Bleu Kitchen and Taco Mell, who signed on to breathe some new life into the neighborhood bar that opened in February 2020. Champ City’s new owner roster now includes original owner and Bravo TV’s Married To Medicine cast member Lia Dias, as well as Taco Mell’s Jermelle Henderson, and Bleu Kitchen’s Calvin Johnson. Johnson and Henderson are part of the self-described Foodminati restaurant group and represent two-thirds ownership at Westchester’s popular Court Cafe. The three put their heads together with a contractor and applied paint, new light fixtures, and TVs, and added fresh cocktails while amping up the menu. Notably, the whole conversion took place in one week. “The bar wasn’t as busy as it used to be, but we saw the potential,” says Johnson. “It needed a facelift and a new program. It looks totally different.” Bars have been some of the hardest hit businesses since the pandemic hit, especially the few in Los Angeles that are Black-owned. Factor in that Champ City opened less than a month before March 2020, and bars faced harsh restrictions on operations during peak COVID-19 months; both added to its challenges. The new partnership will likely provide a boost in this section of Inglewood, along with Champ City’s one-and-a-half mile proximity to SoFi Stadium. Johnson developed a food menu that can be turned out from a small kitchen, offering truffle parmesan wings, oxtail mac and cheese chili bites, chicken taquitos, pastrami on a toasted Italian roll with Monterey jack, shrimp ceviche, and a gumbo gouda dip inspired by Bleu Kitchen’s fast-selling food truck item: pot pies. Roosterfish’s Julian Garroway Jr. and longtime LA bartender Robert Bahena put together cocktails, such as the Inglewood tea, a hefty cocktail with vodka, tequila, grapefruit juice, lime, and grenadine. Plus, the Sunni sidecar is a boozy tribute to Johnson’s wife, Sunni. The team also added a new hookah provider and valet parking, and adjusted Champ City’s dress code to skew upscale. Johnson says there’s more on the way. “We’re still not done,” he says. “It’s in the building stage for new people to support.” The partners will adjust hours to accommodate those attending concerts, NFL games, or most events at SoFi and YouTube Theater. Check Instagram for hours, but count on Tuesday through Saturday from 5 p.m. to midnight, and Friday and Saturday from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m." - Mona Holmes

Google
Dingy dive bar with no atmosphere . Went there for a pre game drink with friends and we were not overly excited about returning . The people working there were friendly but not enough to go back unfortunately.

Google
Champ City is a great place to listen to some good music and / or watch a game. It's also spacious. And the hostess was awesome.

Google
Kay was a great bartender but I expected a bigger crowd for a football game night but that was pleasant got great service and conversation. Drinks were reasonable aswell.

Nassim hmeidan

Google
Fantastic vibe and right next to SOFI Stadium/the Forum. The owners are the best people you’ll ever meet and they go above and beyond to make sure their guests are taken care of.

Google
Ladies order your drinks because if your man orders it will taste like medicine 🤢 Didn't get a chance to try the food because they ran out.

Tyisha Brooks

Google
It’s literally no soap or napkins in the restroom. No ones here at all and dj’n off a phone

Google
I liked it. Wasn't over crowded. The bartenders were cool. The music was decent. Only thing I didn't like was the parking was across the street. So if you're a woman maybe don't walk alone or carry something with you.

Yelp
Awesome spot! before or after if you are attending a live game. Do not let the outside fool you!! Inside is very clean and plenty of space to hang with your squad looks like the interior was completely redone, which is a nice feeling Smiley took good care of us Always with a smile on her face Pretty cool spot if you're visiting out of town, this will definitely be our spot before the game or even if we're watching one of them. There are live huge TV's everywhere with awesome surround sound (sound is important) Great selection of spirits Food is good as well There is hookah bongs too Some Parking in the back, in the alley We'll see you soon Smiley!! Go Clippers!!

Marlene A.

Yelp
Sick ass bar, good vibes, and the bartender SMILEY is more than awesome! The bar itself is clean yet offers an old school ambience! Without a doubt I'll be making a return to this spot. If you're in LA, stop by.

Yelp
People people people. If you are not coming to Champ City Bar after work to wind down you need to start . Ask for Christina she is amazing . Her smile is infectious. She is pleasant and so helpful and if she makes you a drink YOU WONT BE DISAPPOINTED. I can't keep telling you but come to Champ City it's amazing . Tacos FIRE. . Just come and enjoy . It's a mature , adult after work crowd with an elite turn up vibe .

Shaina T.

Yelp
Smiley the bartender was beyond sweet and made some good ass drinks!!!!! Definitely comin back.

Yelp
I was there over the weekend to watch the fight. Friendly bartenders, good drink selection and both the turkey tacos and lemon pepper wings were a hit. Will definitely go back to Champ City to watch a game or grab a drink. Overall, it was a good time and is a great space to watch a game.

Wendy C.

Yelp
Just had some much needed happy hour wings! Their Lemon Pepper wings are the best I've tried. Good seasoning cooked to perfection! With some Michelob's perfect combo. Nice big screen TV's and super chill vibes.

Yelp
Came here for brunch. Apparently it is now owned or partly owned by another owner. Rapper and LA Figure Joe Moses. As he says, he does it for the ratchets! They only served one dish here on this particular day and it was Chicken and Waffles or chicken and fries. The waffle was soft and tasty. The chicken was decent. Not too salty but flavorful nonetheless. They have bottle service here, a large patio for smoking, and hookah service. DJ was decent but like someone said they kept switching up and played some crazy mixes. I think for the most part did ok. I sat at a table so i didn't get to experience the bar service but I know that there were 2 bartenders in and out of there, and they did their best to get everyone served . Pricing is pandemic pricing so expect to pay for what you get. The area is not the best. Someone asked where I parked and i said the front. Apparently it was not safe so they parked at the Supermarket. Definitely use and proceed with caution coming here. Location is in Lennox not necessarily Inglewood.

Yelp
No parking especially on days when there is a game at SoFi, so I didn't have an opportunity to try the food which I heard was good.

Jasmine M.

Yelp
They are Open for Sunday morning football. Right next to sofi stadium. they have all the games on

Yelp
This bar has gone to shits. During the pandemic, this lounge was so LIVELY for it to have been a time when we weren't supposed to be outside- and when I say I lively I mean bodies on bodies! But now? Complete zombie land. They have had more Re-Re-REEE openings than the Pynk and it never works or helps get a better turn out. Personally, I go for the chef because he makes these amazing quesadillas but with all these cause constant changes, they've cut his menu- unfortunately. Also, it doesn't matter what day you go, it's going to be dead- trust me.

Yelp
Just had to write a review of the amazing time I had the other night after the game! Literally a hidden gem! I'm an LA native but I've never been to champs because of the bad rep they had... however after seeing they have new ownership and also a new hookah tender I decided to give it a try. My girls and I left soft stadium disappointed over the Rams lose (insert sad face) but of course drinks, good food, and hookah made it all better. The staff was very attentive- the Dj had us lit! we had egg rolls and they were fire! Our hookah was probably the best I've had in La(.) no cap- over all it was a great night and we'll definitely be back. I had to write this review because there were so many negative comments and it's nothing like the experience we had.

Yelp
Great place. Very welcoming. Having seen them open in awhile, I hope the business is doing okay...?

K F.

Yelp
I am not a fan of writing bad reviews on businesses. Things happen & I am never one to play the victim, but I felt it necessary to bring awareness regarding the behavior of those working at this establishment in handling an incident -- NOT just for other women considering coming here but for the staff to potentially review/reflect on their actions so these things can be handled differently in the future. My car obtained a flat tire on the freeway & I had to pull over until I could find a parking spot on a residential street that happened to be a block or so away from this bar/lounge. I had to wait for Triple A to arrive. My friend decided to get out of the car. Had I initially known that she wasn't just getting out of the car to get some air and was actually walking down the street I would have NEVER let her walk alone at night. When I call her, she tells me she stumbled upon your bar and was just having a drink in the meantime & I should come meet her. We had about 45 minutes top to kill so I say what whatever and walk over. The bouncer was nice & was just making small talk while he checked my ID & I told him about the flat tire etc. He even offered to help change my tire for me. Really kind guy but I unfortunately did not have a spare. The majority of the time I was even at your bar was spent walking outside to answer the phone & talk to triple A & a family member. My main concern at that point was just getting home. Fast forward I'm sitting at the bar with my friend & we're just talking & trying to kill time. I didn't even consume half of my drink. We start dancing a little, take some photos at the cute photo booth, etc. The DJ's music was pretty awful. I go up to the DJ and kindly ask him if I can request a song. He says yes. The place is not packed yet he never plays any song and at this point I'm pretty bored out of my mind. I figured why not ask for a different song before we leave. This was 20 min or so from me asking the first time. So I go up & ask him for a different song. Again, it's a dead Wednesday night. That's when sh*t hits the fan and gets WEIRD. I see my friend walk up to the dance floor area and some guy I'm assuming worked there says something to her. I don't know if she said something to the guy who worked there. I don't know if the DJ was annoyed because I requested a song/spoke to him at all. Then everything happened SO FAST. A girl who I NOW believe worked there (but didn't know at the time because she NEVER actually said she was part of your establishment) comes up to me and starts grabbing my arm like "You gotta go you gotta go". I have NO IDEA who this person is & I have no clue why she's talking to me like this. REGARDLESS of me thinking a random girl just started grabbing me, I STILL step down away from the DJ with her & try to ensure her that there won't be any problems & we're cool. Had I known that she was with the business I would have just left right there and wouldn't have had any conversation trying to talk her down while she was on a 10. Suddenly, a male employee grabs me HARD and THROWS ME TO THE FLOOR. He then picks me back up and proceeds to drag me out. I wasn't yelling at anyone, fighting anyone, causing endangerment/harm to any other patron in your establishment including staff. Yet, you decided to let a male member of your staff man-handle a 5'6", 125 pound young woman as if I just caused massive chaos. There is a way to remove someone from an establishment. This was completely unnecessary. When I'm outside I'm confused why I was thrown on the floor by your employee & dragged out like a dog. I ask an employee who had already followed us out, "do you think what just happened was okay?" He says nothing. "I'm a woman. Why did you find it okay to let a woman be thrown on the floor and dragged by a grown man!?". He pauses. Then he says "Well when we tell you to leave that's what happens." I'm thinking, who told me to leave? Looking back I realize it was potentially the woman who I didn't even know worked there. Regardless, that's NO excuse for man-handling a girl. We're now back by my car waiting for Triple A. The initial bouncer & a car full of guys drove until they found us and offered to wait in the neighborhood until Triple A came to make sure we were okay. I said "thank you so so much but we'll be okay". I really appreciated the offer though as I think they saw how messed up it all was. I'm not someone who starts problems. Sadly, other people are and we all know these types of people. The ones given the same situation that would try to report you to the Better Business Bureau, file a lawsuit, or post this all over social media. Save yourself the headache and protect your customers. Things like this NEED to be handled differently especially involving interactions between your male staff and female patrons.

Yelp
First time I came here I loved it. Second time I ordered two margaritas and the bartender charged me 5000 dollars on my credit card. I spoke to the owner and everything and she promised she'd clear it up then went ghost. AMEX kept calling and they wouldn't return the call which is wack because you couldn't spend 5k there on a wild night. THEN my brother went back there last night AND GOT SHOT. His friend WAS MURDERED IN FRONT. They made no statement and are promoting "Wing Wednesday". Stay safe y'all.
google avatar

Candi R.

Yelp
Came here for the 1st time on Thursday and it was wack! so the DJ was on a roller coaster, he would play good music then slow jams... you couldn't catch a vibe at all.. If everyone is Vibin on rap why would u play Sza? I'm juss sayin.. Then when we ordered a drink the bartender ignored us ( cause we Hispanic) and took another persons order. Lastly, went back for a second round and yet another bartender took the order and tipped herself... really? We usually go to GS where it's consistent this place is wack! Be patient till places open up again...

Ashli B.

Yelp
My go to spot to watch the games and to get their Lemon Pepper BBQ wings! Order a Tequila Smash when you're here!

Yelp
Great food and great bartenders. Drinks not expensive and the pour is great ...staff is very friendly and music always on point

Erika S.

Yelp
Went here to grab a drink with friends on a Sunday. The food and atmosphere was lit but the customer service could definitely use some TLC. It appears for Shelly customer service is not in her ministry. Rude from the beginning, waited at the bar for drinks instead of making contact she decided to stare rudely and not offer any assistance to make the bartenders life any easier. We stayed almost till closing (last call for drinks) there was still a lot of people still there when she decided to close shop and clean table tops etc. Without saying excuse me or any common courtesy gesture to ask me to move she decided to sweep trash in my direction and aggressively clean around our group.

Yelp
Amazing food, great customer service, delicious drinks, and vibrant ambiance!!! Went on a Sunday to watch the football games and tailgate before Rams game and had a great time!!!

Yelp
Perfect spot to grab lunch at The Kitchen and a great drink. Bartenders are very kind, make great drinks and food tastes great. I recommend the fried shrimp plate with the greens and cornbread. The new must go to lunch spot in Inglewood!

Yelp
I started coming here in the beginning of the year when they first opened before COVID-19. I wanted to give it a try with the recent reopening since COVID-19 . My, My, My how it has changed... and not in a good way. Before the place was so funny, good drinks, good food, great music and good service all around a fun local bar. Now the service sucks especially since the best bar tender Nelly is no longer working there. It took forever to get drinks and tacos. The server would never come to check in it like she would just forget about us plus other tables. We had to keep looking for her. Not the same DJ definitely had a bunch of pre-recorded young music. DJ was young and played no good music minus a couple of songs that had to be requested. Dj's usually pay attention to the crowd but this was not the case because there was no dancing and barely any head nodding. Also, I'm not sure what happen to the food they use to serve. But there is no longer a menu...weird. People want to eat while they drink...duh. All in all they need to rethink this new version of Champ City because this was not an enjoyable experience as it once was.

Yelp
First time at this spot. Had a great time good energy , good DJ beautiful bartenders making great & strong dranks ... Then 15 min B4 closing a fight broke out (which happens @ bars) , then another fight! So I, & a few others ran to the patio in the back for safety.... where I Met Amanda ( who said she was the manager) & that we need to go out the front door where the fight was happening & not contained ! I proceeded to tell Amanda I don't feel safe & will like to stay on the patio until the fight was contained & handled . She then tells me this would be the last time my Scarey ass will be allowed in this club! So as I'm pleading my case why I don't want to go n the line of fire of this fight security surrounds her and she then start taunting me throwing her middle finger up! Obviously Amanda is feeling real protected by her team of sercurity circle so she continues to taunt me & throw the middle finger up! My experience was so amazing up until this point! I'm a peaceful person & love a good time & vibe . I know that alcohol mixed with bad energy is a mix for disaster , So I was shocked to be treated as such by an employee of this bar let alone someone who claimed to be a manager & should be comforting & soothing customers when startled by Fight(s) ! My bad Amanda if i'm not use to walking thru bar fights! If that makes me a scarey bitch then so be it! & this definitely is not the spot for me! & Amanda you should rethink how u treat people when circled by the clubs sercurity! Because I'm covered , Blessed & believe in KARMA!

Reinisha M.

Yelp
This place is broke with nothing to offer but happy hour the food is trash. I was unsatisfied about my food I let them know I didn't want anything because the nachos and tacos was dry and they told me I couldn't exchange or get a refund because they are struggling. They didn't have utensils because of their struggle . They only have cheap liquor and the hookah is harsh. If this is the best hang out after work or the weekends I rather be in the house and not wasting money on a place that does not give customer satisfaction. Total disappointment. Great Dj if your loaded.

William H.

Yelp
Champ City is always a vibe with something for everyone, which is hard to get local. Hookah, Bar, Good food and nice music. A different vibe and theme every day.. All they missing is bingo Robert

LaJuan M.

Yelp
Whew, I don't even know where to start. Well first off this place use to crack back in 2021 when BTIP was there doing the hookah. And NOW this place has definitely gone to shits! I came here for Taco Tuesday 10/04/22 and I must say it was the WORST experience ever! First, it was a ghost town in there when we arrived at 10pm. they were all out of steak for the tacos, they only had shrimp and chicken. When they brought our tacos out it only had chicken and sour cream on it, they ran out of cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, you know all the ingredients they advertise on INSTAGRAM! They're a whole CATFISH on IG. They didn't even have salsa or HOT sauce to atleast spice up the tacos a little. But wait, it gets worse, they didn't even cook the tortilla shells. The were raw and cold, straight from the bag. Anyway. I order 2 chicken and 2 shrimp In which they NEVER brought out my shrimp tacos, why? Because they were all out of shrimp so I had to get a refund. How are you all out of stuff after only being open for 1 hour and there were barely any customers in there? OH and let's not forget the broke down security guard they had standing outside, it look like he made a shirt that said SECURITY on it but he was nothing more than a struggle guard in front of the place asking to see people ID's but never really look at it to verify the age. He Also didn't pat anyone down before entering the establishment to make sure no one was bringing in any weapons. Yea that's a big No NO. I didn't feel safe I'm there knowing that. But then again it was only like 10 of us in there. Anyway, This place has went down and if I were Bleu Kitchen and Taco Mel, y'all need to take y'all name off this place because it is not a good look.
google avatar

Shanea W.

Yelp
This bar has an unforgettable vibe and upbeat ambiance. The food is tasty and cheap, shots and drinks are very good and the music selection is up to date and enjoyable. This place has tons of space and if you're early, you can definitely get a table for 4+ people. The staff are friendly and always greet you with a smile as well. Parking is easily accessible just 200 ft away from the front door on the same side of the street. I'd recommend this place to anyone looking to have a good time with a few friends on the weekend!
google avatar

Britt Britt E.

Yelp
Stay away from this ghetto entrapment!! Stood outside for an hour to be ignored by bartenders for 30 minutes whose focus is solely on the men. The girl at the front tried to be slick and not give me the right change. The bartenders socialize way too much. It was dirty and nasty. Alcohol and food all over the floor. Hot no AC inside. No tissue or seat covers in the bathroom. Just gross. I will never step foot back into this place. No good vibes no good music. TRASHHHHHH!!!
google avatar

Ty M.

Yelp
Literally standing in front of the best bartender in Inglewood Jeana... would absolutely go to her any day of the week. She shows so much love. Feel like home. Thanks you Jeana

Courtney T.

Yelp
Amazing place with unbeatable prices and the vibe is amazing! I would highly recommend

Tomorrow D.

Yelp
Terrible customer service especially at the bar. Female bar tender was very rude. Instead of having some sort of customer service skills she did not. Too busy out on the dance floor having drinks and chasing men around. Would not be going back to this establishment. They didn't even have no chicken, which is what they are mainly known for
google avatar

Trejon A.

Yelp
Jeana was a dope bartender. My drink was fire and the service was great. Will definitely be back.

Crystal B.

Yelp
Great people work there nice vibe l, their hookah can a lot better. Also, they last few times I went there people have been shot and killed so I'm cool ! They need up and up the security in the parking lot as well in the venue. However, before the shit show it was a nice spot if you didn't have any where to go and wanted to get out.
google avatar

Lee M.

Yelp
Came here last week and stumbled upon this gem! They had Taco Tuesday with All Flavor No Grease (I love his food btw). They had a special for the night $5 margaritas so it was pretty nice crowd. Glad to see something like this in Inglewood with all the changes going on. And the DJ they had was playing all of my favorite jams! Will be back each week!

Brittany B.

Yelp
Most popping bar in the inglewood area. Good music, good food. If you're looking for a cool chill spot in town I suggest you come here

Amber C.

Yelp
At first I wasn't going to leave a review but after meeting the bartender gabby I had to! She was amazing! Friendly and made the best drinks! I really enjoyed my night here! Bartenders are nice and welcoming drinks are fire! Vibes are great! I will be back!

christopher c.

Yelp
I have enjoyed the environment of Champ City, but it's truly the customer service you receive that makes it an enjoyable establishment to frequent, in particular the most friendliest attentive and amazing smiling bartender with the crazy cool blue hair miss Gabby!!! Super dope at getting your order right and always remembering your order as well, top notch customer service experience!!!!

LeJour LA B.

Yelp
Great vibes! Clean, no drama, good music, and everyone is so friendly! Definitely returning.

Tay G.

Yelp
My girl Jeana hooked my margarita up! I ordered a mango margarita and it tasted so good. She also didn't take a long time to acknowledge me and get my order ready :) Go Jeana

Latangela M.

Yelp
Jeana was a bomb bartender! The drinks are very good as well as that food!! The music was on point. Definitely a vibe

Yelp
The best bar I know in Inglewood and environs

Yelp
Just discovered this bar via IG. I was helped at the bar by Gaby, she was so sweet and professional and she makes the best drinks. I will return and if you decide to try this bar definitely look for her she will likely have blue hair.

Yelp
friends discovered this new spot right before covid!!! it's cool as hell, has karaoke and close to home!!! the bartender nellie is excellent!!! can't wait for them to open back up.

Yelp
to begin with , I was excited to come here And watch the fight and have drinks. when I arrive here there was cops all over the over street , I didn't realize it was because of the bar . Someone was jump and beat up leaving the bar minding his own business , now He fighting for his life , so then I stand in line and they said it was closed . but still letting people in who came after me , so that's bias , so I hit up the champbar ig page , and this what I get , I ask why they say it's closed but they letting people in , they told me to hold on , I'm waiting patiently , and someone who workin by the front door with gold hair who letting people in after told me to leave and go home , for my own safety go home , it's too dangerous to stand and wait outside instead of letting me in from standing out , so I walk to the car so I won't risk my life and hit the champbar ig page up and explain what happen , they told to hold on and them callEd me a hater , because I said I'm leaving a review . I drove 45 minutes to come to this bar , before I did that I made sure I knew the price to get and what time it closed, I was present at 8:30 pm lasty, if you don't wanna risk your life dont not come to this bar , unless you don't care about your life and you like living dangerous
