Where to Eat and Drink in Champagne, France | Eater

"A historic family producer in Mareuil‑sur‑Aÿ operating since 1910 and best known for the Clos des Goisses, a 13.5‑acre south‑facing, steep walled vineyard regarded as exceptional terroir; special, by‑request visits (around $290) let guests tour the walled vineyard on foot and then board a vintage bullet boat to sail the Marne for tastings of Clos des Goisses, Royale Réserve Brut and a seasonal picnic prepared by a nearby luxury hotel." - Lindsey Tramuta

Great Tour with Theo! We had a lovely strol through the vineyard winery and cellar with a tasting in the end. It was a really nice intimate environment. I would recommend to go there.

Tours are not cheap but highly recommended if a deep dive into Champagne/champagne is what people want. Theo, our guide, really knew his stuff. He first took us to the famous Clos des Goisses to explain the house’s viticultural philosophy. Then he gave a tour of the winemaking and -storing facilities; I was most impressed by how squeaky clean everything was. Act 3 was a very insightful tasting of part of the Philiponnat champagne lineup. If you are not impressed at the end, maybe champagne is not your thing.

The best champagne house tour we’ve ever experienced (of quite a few!). Just our group of 4, very well organised. Our host (head of hospitality) spoke English perfectly, answered any of our questions in detail and presented all the history of the brand in an interesting way. The cellars are fascinating, still being used and worked. We tasted 4 different styles - amazing, even the NV’s. Easy to book in advance on line (not a walk-in sort of place)

This was the best tour I had during my 1 week tasting trip, and we went to 9 other houses of repute. As it was harvest, Theo showed us a lot of normally unavailable facilities used for Clos de Goisses production. He was knowledgeable and kind enough to allow us a tasting of L.Vs and new Clos de Goisses releases. I was already a drinker of Philipponnat and this has only made me a greater advocate for the house!

If you want to see Champagne-making from start to finish, head here! The tour starts with a walk to (and through) the vines, with information on how everything from the slope of the vineyards to the location affects the wine. After seeing the presses, then you’re taken to the caves to see where the wine ages. It ends with a tasting of Philipponnat champagne, ending the tour on a high note!

Very warm welcome and a very informative ture. For me, this is a one of the best Châmpagne, but still a little bit luck of investment in to marketing. But I definitely recommend to visit this house, to every one. #PHILIPPONNAT, Mareuil-sur-Ay The warmest at Châmpagne, 45° steep slope, 5.5 hectares P.N. planted, mainly South orientated (from the East to the West), very thin earth top (only few cm) with a chalk, limestone and flint ground. From PHILIPPONNAT website: Respect Philipponnat’s 17 hectares of vines, situated at the heart of the Champagne wine-growing area in Ay, Mareuil-sur-Ay and Avenay, are classified Premier and Grand Cru. Philipponnat works to preserve these precious and fragile, centuries-old terroirs, by using natural methods to work the soil, hoeing by hand and ploughing with horses. The House has found the best possible way to renew its traditions while perpetuating the best they have to offer. Emphasis is put on conservation and meeting challenges to unceasingly improve the quality of the wines. Friday, 7th of April.

Awesome visit...no booking, was welcomed in by Theo who set us up with a great tasting and took the time talk all things champagne and why the house was distinct to others. Well worth stopping by.

Fantastic tour and tasting in July with a very knowledgeable guide. He did a great job getting into the details with our small group that already had a basis of understanding on the winemaking process. Loved the champagnes and hope to revisit in the future. The only downside is that some of the champagnes we enjoyed were already sold out but we will visit at a different time of year next time.
