Where to Drink in Boston While Watching March Madness | Eater Boston

"Champions kind of looks like what someone in 1950 probably thought 2018 would look like. The weirdly futuristic interior aside, there are about a billion televisions inside. Grab some beers and some calamari, and tell everyone how much you know about half-court defense." - Terrence Doyle

Google
We drove specifically for the reputation on how great the steak tips were. I got half beef and lamb tips with fries and it comes with a salad (dressing was great). It did not disappoint, lives up to the hype about the tips. The place is small, but it had a lively atmosphere. Everyone just doing there thing and eating. We sat at the bar. It was a Sunday and it was packed. We had to wait until two seats opened up, but not a big deal. I would definitely go again.

Google
My customers tell me regularly they have the best steak tips around so I decided to finally try them. Absolutely NOT disappointed! The marinade is incredible and the tips are tender and juicy! Staff is friendly, service very nice! I will be coming back most definitely. 😍

Google
If I could give it a 4.5 I would. The steak tips were great and had a nice glaze on them. The cuts were lean, tender, and juicy. These are the best steak tips we've ever had. The drive getting there was a bit precarious due to bumpy roads and detours, yet worth the trip. What it lacks in ambience it makes up for in food quality.

Google
A staple of the North Shore. Steak tips here are as good as everyone says, and the rest of the menu is great too. Maybe the best pub food I've ever had. Lots of beer and drink options, plus a easy-going vibe that makes for a fun hang out. Will recommend.

Google
First time at Champions today for a late lunch. Service was outstanding. Several servers asking us if we placed our order, wanted another drink, how was it, can I get you anything else. Just perfect and super friendly. Had to order the steak tips. They were amazing. Tender and marinated to perfection. Plenty of left overs with a ton of food. Very unassuming from the outside but a busy restaurant and bar inside even at 2 pm on a Saturday. All around great menu, great prices for the portions and just perfect service. Nothing not too like here except it could be so busy the wait may turn you away.

Google
Best steak tips on the North Shore! Service is good, no complaints but nothing crazy either and likewise with the atmosphere. People come here for 1 thing and 1 thing only. The steak tips are gluten free which is also great. Pricing is more than fair given the generous portions of food. Highly recommend stopping by!

Google
Food was good as per usual.. our server, who i didn’t get the name of because of how absent she was, did not check on us once. We had to stop her to get refills because she hadn’t bothered to check on us during our meal once and our drinks had been empty for quite a while. The only time she came up to us that wasn’t for taking our order was when our plates were finished and she asked if we wanted the check and some boxes. My family and I were really looking forward to this dinner because it is my father’s birthday. Yet unfortunately, we were all completely disappointed. I’m ALL for supporting waitresses because as someone who works in a restaurant i get how tough it can be at times. But it doesn’t excuse how we were brushed off our entire meal. The restaurant was not hectic or super busy, which in that case I would understand, but paying no mind to customers and then giving them attitude for trying to have a good night out and decent service is not the way to go…

Google
When I tell you that the beef tip sandwiches are phenomenal there are no other words to express it or explain it!!! Be absolute most tender most juicy most flavorful beef I've ever had on any type of sandwich in my life hands down!!!!! It is made to order you choose how you want your state done your steak tips done rare medium well however you like it the season to perfection! The beer batter shrimp excellent and you get a boatload of them! The fountain sodas had just the right amount of kick to them they in no way shape or form were flat The french fries were amazing! It's more of like a dive restaurant and less of a chain type restaurant like a Applebee's or Fridays so if you're ever in Boston and you have the opportunity to go to champs definitely go and have one of their bees tip sandwiches!.

Yelp
My wife and I went there the other day we got the pops. They were very good. Also, we got the sausage plate. It was excellent and so are the french fries they're like steak fries. They're so big. The drinks were reasonable. The waitress was right there if we needed her, but didn't really bother us throughout our meal Get there early cause there will be a wait but things move fast once you're inside give it a try I think you'll like it.

Yelp
Was looking forward to going here with all the reviews. Me and a co worker went here on a Sat Nite. The waiter was awesome, i asked him if i orderd the Steak Tips Medium would they be pink inside ? He said yes. I said i will take them with frie & salad. Well i got 6 huge tips & the first 3 were spot on the last 3 were over cooked. The fries meh should of got the rings. I been to New Bridge & had a better meal. I mite give Campions another shot not sure cause its an hr drive

Yelp
Took 3 guests here today and we were all very disappointed to see a sign on the door that they're closed because they're on vacation, but it a business that's established enough where they should be able to field staff to be open. I think the owners or managers aren't doing there jobs by closing when they ought to be able to field a small staff to stay open, not that hard.

Yelp
Longtime bucket list, first time visit for their much-talked-about steak tips, and first visit was very impressive. Steak tips: Humongous portion, choice of side, and salad included, making it a great value even at $27 and change. Nice char, strong grill flavor, cooked to medium rare as asked, very tender, juicy, and just enough sauce to complement and not overwhelm. Flavorful mix of what seemed like Italian, teriyaki and barbecue to produce a whole greater than (and different from) the sum of its parts. Only downside: a few of the bites had gristle, but just a few. Overall: outstanding. Lived up to the hype. Onion rings: Clam shack version, very thin, very crisp batter. None of that puffy stuff. So right up my alley. Buffalo wings: Tried in an appetizer combo where you can pick any two from the menu. Just enough crispness, but exceptional juiciness and tenderness. Very piquant sauce that brought sourness along with heat. Pork shanks: On the bone, guessing cooked some other way first and then deep fried, served with a small dollop of barbecue sauce on top and a small pool below. Surfaces didn't look promising, but juiciness underneath came through. Moist and tasty throughout, with crispness on top. Not just dependent upon sauce. Service: It's basically a bar, but very very pleasantly surprised by the superb service from my main server Jackie and two others who also tag teamed efficiently. Friendly, enthusiastic ambassadors who exuded what hospitality is all about. All this and parking too. Great steak tips and so much more.

Yelp
The steak tips are to die for... a hidden gem... probably because the outside looks like you may not want to be inside, but trust me it's worth it.

Yelp
I was in the Peabody/Salem area and checked out Champions after hearing some rave reviews about the Steak tips. They did not disappoint! Juicy, with a sweet slightly tangy marinade- the slight char of the grill added depth, so good! I got the steak frites which needed salt but paired well with an extra side of buffalo and blue cheese dressing. I wasn't sure if the cherry peppers came with so made sure to ask for them. The portion of tips was generous and the entree included the salad and fries and overall was a good deal as it turned into at least 2 meals. This popular spot was packed on a rainy Saturday- there was a bit of a line but since I was traveling alone I slid right into an open spot at the bar. Paired with some cold beer and friendly convos with regulars I had a great time! Great food, good service and atmosphere... next time might try the onion rings or rice pilaf as a side and the burger looked amazing . I'll stop by again if ever in the area, check it out!

Yelp
We went around 5pm on a Friday night. Prime time and busy! Don't be fooled by the exterior. You might be a little scared off, but once inside it's lively. They'll take care of you. You'll be alright. We heard about their steak tips and had to try it out. It came with a side salad and choice of fries, onion rings, or rice pilaf. We (two adults, toddler) put in two orders ($27 each) of steak tips (one with rice pilaf and the other with onion rings) and we had plenty leftover. Onion rings were crispy, lightly battered. Toddler picked off our plates. You can probably share one plate among two adults, but you'll be wanting to take some leftover home! The BEST steak tips I have had...like I was dumbfounded for a hot second after the first bite. So delicious. Very tender, tasty marinade, and cooked to perfection. It was a bit of a wait to get seated, but definitely worth it. Line moved though. They have sit down booths, high top tables, and seating at the bar. Once seated, service was excellent - food came out fast and fresh! Multiple people checking in on us despite it being packed. They got a system down, like a well oiled machine. We ate quick - a long line was forming to the outside and we wanted others to enjoy the food and warmth from the cold. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
Steak Tips, Wings, Salads We love Champions. It's a local pub with simple food, but the steak tips and turkey tips are excellent. The steak fries are worth every calorie, too. Champions is on our and most people's top 10 list of north shore steak tip institutions. The rice and salad are very simple too, but well worth it. Despite other reviews we have always had good service, but this is a dive pub, so set your expectations accordingly. Tip: Get a burger, the char broiler in the back of the bar is pretty special. Champions is not our favorite steak tip joint, but it is one of the better spots with the bar atmosphere and nice family ran atmosphere. Thanks

Yelp
Champions serves the best steak tips I've ever had! I love bringing friends and family from out of town to try them. The rest of the food is unimpressive. I have tried a couple other menu items and now I just stick to the steak tips. And skip the side salad. Tip: the portion of the steak tip dinner is generous! Two people can share it, or one person will have leftovers to bring home. Champions is definitely very, very local. Everyone knows one another. A Peabody local introduced me to Champions and told me all about the interesting history of the steak tip recipe. He also told me about how one of the current owners started as a server. It's so impressive and heartwarming! What a great legacy this place has. For the most part, service is good! Unfortunately, one server has really bad vibes. I don't want to get into it except that it's consistent. It's because of him that I feel unwelcome and worry that he might be rude to people I bring to Champions.

Yelp
Been hearing about the tips, and well, they are less than two miles from home so we decided to try them yesterday. It's kind of dark and divey, sports bar look. Bar is simple, with about ten stools. A couple of tables, and they even have 8 top tables for groups. I think this would be an excellent place to watch the Patriots! Food: Hubs, of course, got the steak tips, med rare. We saw the chef cooking everything, and he was masterful at juggling it all. The tips were dark, juicy, tender, so frickin tender! As well as cooked perfectly. The fries were frozen, but who cares when you get that much meat? Oh, and hubs said the juices were also perfect for the fries. I opted for a basket of fried shrimp; pretty good! Nice batter! And a Greek salad. The feta cheese was the only thing that made it Greek; otherwise, it was a green salad. The dressing was good. Prices were really fair for what we got, portion size, and tastiness!

Yelp
What can I say but best steak tips ever. Friendly service and fun place to visit and see the locals. Did I mention the Great tips?

Yelp
I came here with my mom for lunch today. We arrived before noon and were able to get seats right away. The bartender greated us and took our drink order pretty quickly, but it took quite a while for him to come back to take our food order. I got the steak tips and my mom got the turkey tips. Each meal came with a basic side salad and side (choice of rice, onion rings or fries). A waitress dropped off our meals- the meat portions were huge, two people could have easily shared one meal. The steak was juicy and cooked to a perfect medium, but the sauce they put on it was super sweet and really off putting. The turkey was cooked without sauce, but was on the dry side. Once the food was delivered, we never saw our waitress again. We had to flag her down for drink refills and after she dropped off the check, she never returned so we had to flag down someone else to pay. I see other comments referencing the customer service, and I definitely observed that regulars and friends received better service. If you come to this small local bar, you will definitely need to bring your patience.

Jay J.

Yelp
Couldn't imagine a worse person to order from. You'll see him for yourself. Walks around miserably and has NO customer service running in his blood. Who hired this guy? I called tonight for his name and they said they weren't permitted to get it. We waited an hour and a half for a to go order and when I asked what was happening they bagged our food up in one minute. I complained that I watched our food get cold and all this jerk did was ask me if I paid yet and took my credit card off the table and ran it! if I see him in my line of work, I'd do better. I'm so put off this place now.
google avatar

Corey S.

Yelp
I gotta say these steak tips were some of the most tender I have ever eaten. They easily gave over a lb of steak tips. Marinade was amazing and just great overall value.
google avatar

J B.

Yelp
Food is amazing! Best steak tips around. My kids say that they have the best burgers too! A true hidden gem

Marion L.

Yelp

Yelp
What could you sad bad about champions? Not much . The tips are amazing . So is the sirloin .

Yelp
First time there local place great food always busy they are known fir there steak tips. Good portions and prices. Small seating area but it's worth the trip to this location. Rustic restaurant but a home local restaurant feeling. Champions Steak

Dorothy S.

Yelp
Overrated place. Anybody can get steak tips with teriyaki sauce on them. 27 dollars is way over priced. New Bridge is better.
google avatar

Gaby F.

Yelp
This place would be a 5 because of those delicious steak tips but good luck trying to get them. Their establishment is too small and always packed and when you try to call to get carry out, they never answer the phone. I know they make a lot of money, why not move elsewhere or make the place bigger so you have a bigger grill to handle the demand. Some place I would be having once a month, I only have one to two times a year because it's impossible to get food there
google avatar

John T.

Yelp
Busy night tonight, got 2 seats at the bar. We both got the tips w rice, hers well mine med rare. Both came out cooked perfect & very tender. Was just enough to fill us, but we both finished. No leftovers is a good thing. Staff is very efficient! I was impressed with how they all were working hard doing there own thing. Getting g everyone in & out.
google avatar

Miguel s.

Yelp
Tried placing a to go order via phone, I was placed on hold for 10 minutes before being hung up on. Tried calling back and the phone went directly to voicemail several times. They must be doing very well if they can turn away to go business. They have no online ordering option either.

Yelp
This place exceeded my expectations! Went here this past weekend for an early Father's Day lunch for my dad. He had heard from coworkers that this place had the best steak tips, so we had to check them out. We parked in the lot and the place was packed! You can tell it's a local joint. Every seat was taken. It's a casual bar where you can enjoy some beers and play keno. Love it! We didn't wait long and then were seated at a booth. We ordered Buffalo wings as an app and got the steak tip plate each as a meal. It came with a salad and a side. The salad was simple yet satisfying with iceberg lettuce and a creamy Italian dressing, and for my side, I went with the onion rings. I took my first bite of the steak tips, and they literally blew my mind! Absolutely delicious 10/10. Slight char on the outside with a beautiful marinade, and the inside was tender! No words! Steak tips can be such a hit or miss, but this place truly nailed it. Will definitely be back!! Great find!

Thomas F.

Yelp
It's a small place so sometimes you have to wait outside. But, it is well worth it, especially, if you want steak or steak tips. We ordered two steak tips, a sirloin steak, and turkey tips. All were delicious, and cooked perfectly. The service was excellent. Would definitely go back, especially for the steak.

K S.

Yelp
So, I apparently wrote a review about this place 10 years ago, I cant believe its been that long! Anyways, we went last night and everything was delicious! Steak tips are fantastic, and the sausage was great! Love the steak fries and very friendly staff. This place was extremely busy and the staff was spot on! Can;t wait to go again! Portions are very large and the prices are great!
google avatar

Rose M.

Yelp
How dare you be this good! If you haven't been here your an absolute square! (Me before I got there) So delicious! Melts in your mouth! Service is excellent! Such a good vibe! Don't even mess around and get the steak tips! I dare you too!!! What a great hometown place! A staple of Boston! I'll be back asap! Don't change a thing!

Keith P.

Yelp
Best tips, period. I've actually never tried anything else. Ordered 5lbs for a Revolution Soccer tailgate......honestly taste and tenderness was the same as if I ordered them there. Thanks
google avatar

Christina W.

Yelp
Always great and friendly service good drinks and best steak tips! Comfy local bar scene.
google avatar

Ryan M.

Yelp
The steak tips are legendary. Lemon pepper chicken is also very good. Service is great. You simply can't go wrong at Champions.
google avatar

Rob C.

Yelp
Short wait, very crowded. Got a wobbly table with a wobbly chair in the corner. Staff was nice. Seating for larger parties are limited. Order the steak tips with fries, no mash or baked options. The atmosphere is friendly. Food came within 15 minutes. Steak tips were absolutely delicious. Big, flavorful, cooked right, and melt in your mouth. The fries were hot crispy and hot. They need a bigger place, because the line never stopped.
google avatar

John D.

Yelp
This place is getting by on steak tips alone. There is no other redeeming qualities about the business. The service stinks and the sides are like they don't care at all. It is great if you want to get drunk and eat strictly steak but if you want a side with your meat I wouldn't recommend it here. They have gone down hill I am sad that they always treat us like assholes for ordering food from them. The steak is 4.5 stars but service atmosphere and other menu items specifically sides are all after thoughts and no care given in their preparation. They served me soggy fries that they defrosted in the deep fryer for me. If you can order steak by itself maybe you can make your own sides at home.
google avatar

Yelp
From New Orleans, came to this place 3 years ago not knowing about steak tips! New nothing, the owner said "your kidding, you've never had steak tips"? "Nope" he said "Come on in your in for a treat"! Wow wow wow!! Never imagined anything like this and we are from a place with wonderful food, but OMG, this was absolutely delicious!!!!! Phenomenal!! The taste is indescribable and talk about melt in your mouth!!! He then brought us a taste of everything on the menu! Nicest people in the world! Fast forward 3 years, we are back! Went Thursday the 15th of September 2022 and it was just like we remembered, we looked at each other and were like "WOW, this is incredible!!! It is now the 18th of September and we are going back today to watch the Saints game! The portions are huge, one order can feed a couple. The onion rings are awesome as well. The staff is super friendly and took the time to tell us places to visit while here! Awesome place, incredible food, amazing people! It's a local place; not a tourist trap!!! We are drooling thinking about them now! Will eat some more shortly!! Way to Geaux Champion Pub! Your tips are absolutely phenomenal

Yelp
I've only been here twice and each time has been a nightmare. Servers have the worst attitude, Doesn't even attempt to smile. The first time I came here the steak tips were cold and raw. Not " Medium Rare " or " Rare " , But Raw. I didn't think about coming back but was talked into it. Today I got a burger and asked for Medium Rare, It comes out Raw. Every time I said " excuse me " I was ignored. So I ordered a cocktail. I ended up being charged twice because the server thought I had 2 drinks. She then gives me $8 back as a sorry. Well you still owe me the other dollar for that drink. Will not be back. When I mentioned it to a neighboring restaurant they said they aren't shocked at all. If you come here ask for everything medium or higher.
google avatar

Beth C.

Yelp
Not enough staff since covid, & they seem overworked and unhappy Food is always great
google avatar

Micky T.

Yelp
It's a ma and pop type of joint, bf and I had the beacon cheeseburger and pop. I heard their steak tips are amazing here. Will have to go back another time and try it out. It's a chill vibe type of setting. They have booths and high tops.
google avatar

Katie M.

Yelp
The steak tip dinner or sub are both huge and delicious. Tried the fried mac and cheese for the first time and was surprised by how large that serving was as well. The tips are each the size of what a fancy place tries to play off as a steak.

Maggie D.

Yelp
A year ago this would have easily been 5 stars. Went today for a late lunch. Waited 30 minutes for fried pickles and buffalo fingers and then another 40 for our meals. I had to ask for my salad to go which never came. The steak tip sub was soggy and the sausages were so burnt they were inedible. We were always fine paying extra for the steak tips but the increased cost has now come with decreased service. I hope the new owners quickly figure out what has always worked for Champions in the past.
google avatar

Johnathan M.

Yelp
As one other review I read stated, this place really does survive off of steak tips and steak tips alone. Walked in with the wife the other night and waited at the entrance to be sat, waitress' and waiters see you, they just ignore you, and other times when we have been helped you always feel like a bother. The old owner actually had to come over and greet us and see how we were doing. Sad what's happened to this place, increased prices for decreased quality.
google avatar

Rich S.

Yelp
Place was empty, waited 2 hours for food and ended up walking out. Cook said he was the owner and was totally unprofessional. Very sad, maybe their closing, who knows.
google avatar

Jackie R.

Yelp
Finally!! Steak tips did not disappoint, fabulous! Grilled hot sausage, adequately spicy grilled to perfection! So happy to have finally made it after hearing so many positive things! Looking forward to returning!

Maria M.

Yelp
Hands down Best Steak Tips!! I now live in Groveland and still make it a point to get Take out at Champs!! Thanks Nikki and Toe for always providing the Best!!
google avatar

Clarissa L.

Yelp
Like all the other reviews here say, the steak tips are delicious! Moist, tender and sweet, these are a must have at champions! It comes with rice, fries or onion rings, so come hungry! We also ordered a lamb tip salad which was just as good. The lamb was smokey and didn't have a gamey taste to it. Recommended for those who want a healthy and less sweet dish.
google avatar

Barbara M.

Yelp
My husband and I were there last week. He ordered a steak and I got the turkey tips. Although his steak was "okay", my turkey tips were very dry. I ate a few onion rings and tried to eat a few bites of the turkey, but the tips were unpalatable. I told the server that I couldn't eat them and she said, "Oh, alright" and took them away. My husband proceeded to eat his dinner but there was no sign of our server. Granted, it was extremely busy, but, still! About 20 minutes later she came by, dropped our check on the table and said "Thank you". My husband had finished his meal and I left hungry. In their defense, they didn't charge us for the tips but I was never offered another meal or an apology. We won't be back.
google avatar

John O.

Yelp
I had a really good time (I think). I will have to come back to see what this place was like. I do remember being satisfied with the bacon cheeseburger. I'm not sure if I would recomend it. I should have written the review that night considering the state I was in.
google avatar

Mark L.

Yelp
Steak tips are excellent and plentiful. The rest of the menu is lacking. $23 for a steak and cheese sub ?? Fish definitely tasted frozen. Beer selection was minimal and the young man that took our order didn't have a clue. Forgot our drinks and when I finally found him , he brought over the wrong beer for me and a glass of foam for the wife. So if you love steak tips , that's the place to go. For anything else , don't bother.
google avatar

Derek Y.

Yelp
Do you like steak tips? Do you even know what steak tips are? Do cows have tips? None of that matters. All that matters is that you can pay the $18 for the very juicy, delicious steak tips (plus tip and tax). I have no idea what cut of meat they are but I ordered mine medium rare with fries. The tips are beautifully dark and and chewy. They cooked it well done the first time around and, while we did get it sent back and replaced with a perfectly medium rare dish, even the well done batch retained the same flavor and juiciness. It seems like the flavor bursts at the seams no matter how they're prepared. The fries that came with the steak tips were completely lackluster and were not good at all, but whatever. We also ordered an appetizer of wings ($7.95) which were suuuuper crunchy. Another reviewer said that they tasted frozen but I don't care because they were delish. And there's a pretty generous amount (I think like 9 or 10?) per basket so you're actually getting your money's worth. I will say that one (and the biggest) detraction is service. Everyone is quite friendly and polite, but there were only, like, three servers for the entire place. It's not a huge space but you still wait a while to be seated and served and for other things like water refills, etc. Additionally, they charged an extra $1 or $2 for the salads that come with the entrees but didn't tell us until we asked after seeing it on our bill. The explanation had something to do with having to use iceberg lettuce in lieu of romaine due to the ecoli outbreak, but that (1) didn't make much sense to me and (2) doesn't seem like it should be the customer's problem. My biggest gripe about that is the principle, though -- they should have let us know before they served it for sure.

Hakeem W.

Yelp
The best steak tips in Massachusetts. I drive 45 minutes to come here and it's worth it every time.

Peter K.

Yelp
Steak tips are made of beef but are the GOAT. Wait time can be a little long, but it's worth it. Food is fresh and staff are friendly and attentive.

Debbie D.

Yelp
You can't be in a hurry they have one speed extra slow!!!! This used to be a favorite place of ours. Not anymore the wait staff acted like they were unhappy and didn't want to work. Really gone down hill. Find another place there are plenty out there.
