This New England Road Trip Itinerary Is Just an Excuse to Snack | Bon Appétit

"Don’t just pass through this tiny village. Call ahead and order a tray piled with lobsters, steamers, and Portuguese sausage. Then take it out to the deck for prime views of the state’s largest fishing fleet hauling in the day’s catch or, you know, eat it in the car." - ByAmanda Shapiro

Great vibe. Super friendly staff and the best lobster I've had on the coast so far. Cooked to perfection. Bartender whipped us up some special cocktails to match and we were all set. Was really foggy which gave the view a super eerie look. But was still perfect watching the boats come in!

Jody Nelson

Google
Fantastic food BUT, what a turn off exiting the restaurant after such a great meal only to encounter 2 bar patrons smoking right at the top of the stairs, absolutely disguisting and I'm surprised Champlins allows this. Smoking should be banned from the property, patrons that don't smoke should not be forced to inhale that gross second hand smoke at the only entrance /exit to the restaurant. Probably won't be back just because of that!

Google
Great experience here. We found this place by accident when exploring. Just happened to be the time the sun was setting so we were able to enjoy some fishing boats going out and the sunset. Food was excellent. We had salmon, calamari, chowder, claims, tuna and linguine with claims. One of the best meals we've had. Looking forward to visiting again next year! Fried Claims were my favorite!

Google
Great fresh seafood. This is the real deal. Wide range of menu items. You're bound to find something on it you like.

Todd Lizotte

Google
Solid steamers ... clean and delicious. Red chowder was very good.

Google
We ordered 2 lobster dinners, 1 fried clam stops dinner, and 1 shrimp taco. Ordering was entertaining and quick. It had been raining, so outside tables were wet. They gladly wiped off a table for us. The view overlooks the harbor near the Block Island Ferry landing. Our food came relatively quickly and was delicious. The lobsters were medium-sized and perfectly cooked. The coleslaw and fries/onion rings were delicious! We did have to “rent” crackers. The clam stops and fish strips with fries were also delicious! We definitely enjoyed our meal and afterwards walked down to the beach.

Google
We were very hungry when we got off the ferry. We wanted to eat here. The decoration inside was beautiful. we sat on the terrace. The sunset looks beautiful from here. Our food arrived very late. Other than that, the service and flavors were good. I would like to go again next time.

Molly Gluck

Google
Excellent seafood right on the water. The line to order can get very long but woah it is so worth it and their dining room is stunning over looking the harbor with the fishing and ferry boats and the sunset if you come at the right time of day. We got the clam bake, fried shrimp, and scallop roll and everything was amazing. The lobster was a standout with the clambake!

Yelp
Came here for dinner after our day trip to Block Island. This place gets very busy and in waves, probably depending on the ferry schedules. There's three different areas to order three different things. The main window you order the main food items. Drinks you order at the bar. And there's also an Oyster Bar for just that. You order and pay upfront and then given a buzzer that will let you know when your order is ready to be picked at the kitchen window. You can borrow a nut cracker for the lobster for a $3 deposit, but they're probably the most useless nutcracker I've used. Another advice is don't sit outside as the seagulls will come flying in and try to steal your food. What's good here? We mainly split a 1 1/4 Lobster ($33 at the time), which came with coleslaw and a choice of red potatoes or french fries. We also got the Seafood Combo Platter ($43), which was loaded up with fried squid, baked scallops, fried shrimp, fried clams, a filet of battered flounder, and fries. This is a lot and can definitely feed 4 people. But, the best part was the raw oyster bar. I ended up getting two dozen oysters by the time it was all said and done. My personal favorite that they had was the Hope Island Oysters. Oysters are about $1.80 each, which is a very food deal, especially since there's a guy shucking all of them in front of you. Also need to give a shoutout to Dom at the Raw Oyster Bar station. One of the most friendliest guys I've met on this Rhode Island trip and even hooked me up with an extra oyster.

Yelp
Pleasant staff. Consistently good food. 2nd floor dining room has nice views. A great location for dining on breezy days. Finding parking can be tricky - across the street is often your bet bet.

Yelp
Getting fresh lobsters for dinner. Looking forward cooking them some farm fresh veggies. The staff helped us pick out our lobsters, great service. I understand the restaurant above the fish market is a lovely place to dine and watch the ferry's come and go.

Yelp
The perfect fried seafood spot off the beaten path, Much quieter and less crowded than Newport. We all loved meals and enjoyed a Naragassent local brew. Maybe it's the sounds of seagulls, the warm sun shining on you, and the cool sea breeze to cool you down from the harbor that makes this the perfect lunch spot. After lunch we went downstairs for homemade ice cream and took a walk on the pier to see the beach. I could have stayed all day, but our adventure to Newport

Yelp
Opening weekend! We had the fried flounder dinner! So good! Can't go wrong with either the fries or the red potatoes!

Yelp
We visited for dinner with some friends who are local to the community. It's a busy place, lines out the door at dinner time.it very casual and the line very friendly. Lots of chatting as you move up to the counter. Its waterfront location means the parking is limited but the ebb and flow allows for spaces to arise. Be patient. It's worth it. The seating is casual with a view of the boats bringing in the catch of the day. If you have a large party, delegate a couple to do the order and pick up and the rest can grab a table, picnic style. We had a variety of items, a lobster roll, some scallops, some cod. A lot of the items are fried, classic Cape Cod style. For many, it is great, for others, like me better off with lobster roll. Very reasonable prices and family friendly too.

Yelp
I live for a summer trip to Champlins! The fish and chips is my go to meal - it's a great serving size and although I do love a beer battered fish and chips, they have a lighter breading to theirs and it's ideal for a summer day. The service is quick. The location is ideal - you get to watch the boats coming in and out, and wave to the ferry passengers. I feel like I am living my beach vacation dreams with the dining room set up, self seating, bench seats, tons of windows... even when it's not a real beach vacation. I think that for RI's you are either a George's or a Champlin's person and I am Champlins through and through. If you manage to have room after dinner, you can grab an ice cream from the shop under them and then stroll the rocks or walk over to the beach. Yesterday I did not have room for it :( but that was ok my food was plentyyyyyy LOVE THEM!

Yelp
Been here a few times now. Ordered different items each time. Everything has been excellent. The fried scallop roll is jam packed with perfectly cooked, tender scallops, the onion rings and cold lobster roll delectable, the Portuguese stuffed clams are crispy on the outside and creamy in the inside. Lobster bisque makes you say yum with each spoonful. Plenty of pieces of lobster in the cup. I look forward to a late lunch here anytime we are in the area. Best time to go is between lunch and dinner. Gorgeous views and fun watching the fishing boats come in at that time. Order at the counter, service is efficient and you are given a beeper ti let you know when your food is ready. Hot food is perfectly hot and cold food is cold and fresh.

Yelp
Food: must get the lobster Mac and cheese if they have it available on their daily specials. I am dreaming of this dish! Stole the show for me. Fried clams and fish & chips were also tasty. Service: quick, easy, cheap drinks. Nothing better. Ambiance: gorgeous outdoor seating on the port. Indoor seating has a phenomenal view of the port and ocean as well, so truthfully can't go wrong.

Robert G.

Yelp
For the price, the food was not good. My salad was premade and the piece. of salmon was brown and dry and very thin. Very expensive for the small portion and self service. Did not see any handicap accessibility. Had to climbed many stairs to get to restaurant.
google avatar

Yelp
Very good seafood in a great beach location. Clams and scallops are excellent and the variety and prices are reasonable. Only one problem that needs to be called out. They are listed to open at 11:30 which one isn't a great time and two, they always open later then the listed time. They take their sweet time when a line of hungry people are up on the deck at the door and on average, open 10-20 minutes later quite often. Sometimes even longer than that. Way to show urgency to your paying customers. Can't open in time, then change the time. 11:30 should mean 11:30! Need to work on people skills.
google avatar

Yelp
It's great to be right there on the water getting fresh seafood. Prices are great for the portion size. Raw bar shucker took the time to grab fresh hot sauce when he noticed the bottle was looking gross and gave us a great plate of fresh clams. Other food came out hot and fresh. Scallop roll was busting out of the bun with a large portion of scallops at a fair MP and they were tender, not over fried, same with the flounder in the fish and chips. All three of the chowders and the lobster bisque were great, especially on a cold rainy day.
google avatar

Angel B.

Yelp
Lunch line to order on this rainy Saturday but it moves fast and the food is good. Nothing fancy. Lobster bisque is outstanding.
google avatar

Michael E.

Yelp
We came here on a Tuesday night July 2nd. We waited an hour.... The line is uncomfortable going up stairs. We ordered a lobster dinner, fried shrimp, onion rings, Cole slaw, corn. The food was decent, but the lobster was tough to open without a cracker. My wife used her teeth. I had a couple beers, the bartender Jessica is a sweet person, very friendly. It's an old school clam shack experience, classic decor, that is worth it, but the food isn't crave able.

Yelp
Let me start by saying I have been going to Champlin's for the last 25 years. This visit was the first of the season for me and just wasn't up to par compared to past visits. I was with a busy of mine and we came down for a fishing trip (canceled due to rough seas) but still came to RI for a camping trip and a visit to Champlin's. I usually don't eat a lot of fried cod but Champlin's has always been my guilty pleasure. We split everything we ordered which was. Seafood platter (onion rings no longer included) and an oyster platter upgraded for $3 to include onion rings. Let me start by saying the food was warm to cold when I picked it up at the counter. How does that happen when each meal is supposed to be prepared to order at a seafood joint? Big let down as warm to cold fried seafood does not compare to hot from the fryer. The oysters were big and plump but just lukewarm which really was a let down compared to how they would have Ben if they were hot. The onion rings were not coated in the same batter as the seafood as before and I suspect they were a frozen product. Some were urned some okay just not the same as they have been. Definitely not worth the up charge. On to the seafood platter. The scallops were so small you could call them bay scallops versus sea scallops much more clam strips than whole bellies and again everything was warm to cold. The fish was flounder but it soo thin it was fried to dryness. The saving grace was the shrimp which were plump and flavorful but not local of course. The fries were your standard food service frozen fries. Would I go back? Probably not as I dropped $75 plus left a $10 tip for counter service, as I like to help the local workers. I think I should have gone to Iggy's which has been consistently great but I really want Champlin's to be the champlin's I remember. Their seafood market on the ground floor is a true seafood market, and has always been excellent. Try the snail salad or smoked bluefish!

Yelp
Our favorite casual seafood restaurant in Narragansett is Champlins which is located in Galilee in the ocean inlet where many professional rushing boats/companies reside. Talk about sea to table! We like the casual ambience. You order and then pickup. A raw beer and drinks are available. We usually eat in but we ordered takeout for twelve last night. You can not call In orders but it was not a problem. We sent two SILs with our order. Bon mistakes! Twelve very happy diners aged from two to 75! Food choices included: Three orders of a favorite: Seafood Combo -- lightly fried whole clam strips, shrimp, flounder, and sea scallops. Absolutely delicious! About a dozen scallops which is generous. The sweet potato or regular fries came with meal. The coleslaw was fresh, tangy and tasty. A grilled swordfish dinner which was excellent. The small red potatoes are a treat. Fish and Chips which were excellent. Lobster Rolls Whole Belly Clam strip Rolls that are the best in New England. Beef burgers and chicken fingers for the kiddos. Fries too. Gallon of NE Clam Chowder. AND two dozen Clam Cakes -- outstanding. You can eat on one of many picnic tables inside or outside in a large deck with views of the Galilee inlet. We will go back during this vacation visit.

Yelp
One of the best places I've ever been. The restaurant is amazing all very local stuff very fresh. And the market is amazing the staff down there is amazing love them
google avatar

Robert S.

Yelp
Went there for dinner and the line was out to the bottom of the stairs. It moved quickly....you basically order at the counter and find a table. They will then call your number and you pick up your food. The food is OK. I had the lobster roll...nothing outstanding...basic. The white clam chowder was also so...so... The chicken tenders were ok.... Basically an average seafood place...it's a potential option when other nearby seafood places are closed or they have an hour plus wait.... Parking is tough in the area, so be ready to walk or pay.

Yelp
Great mid week trip out to Narragansett while visiting Rhode island and what a treat going to Champlins. It was wet and rainy but they have plenty of indoor seating for just this occasion. The menu has tons for everyone so don't worry if you're not a big seafood fan like myself. You walk up and order and seat yourself, the restaurant and dining area was very clean even with all the wet rain. The staff was friendly and ordering was easy. It's such a small world turns out one the employees knows the same people I do from Montauk NY. It was such a pleasant trip down memory lane. The food was ready in a timely manner and no complaints from anyone, all the food was cooked well tastes good and disappeared. If you're in the area stopping at Champlins is a must.
google avatar

Lindsay B.

Yelp
Food is so good. Casual ambience. Non-pretentious or stuffy. Beautiful views of the water. Good prices. Will be back.

Freddy G.

Yelp
The food is NOT fresh, the salmon tasted like card board, fish taco is not cooked! worst I ever tasted! The tarter sauce is watered down. The place sucks!

Kevin B.

Yelp
We stopped for chowder and clam cakes for myself and fried clams for my wife. Instead I decided on charbroiled swordfish. For an appetizer we had an order of stuffies. The stuffies were pretty good. The swordfish was overcooked and dry. My wife loves whole belly clams and was happy with the order. Overall we enjoy sitting at the bar overlooking the water and the boats coming in and out of the channel. The bartenders here are always nice and engaging with the customers. I usually get the chowder and clam cakes which are very good here. So next time we come it will be chowder and clam cakes for me.

Mara C.

Yelp
The chowder was really good, especially with some super crispy fries. The restaurant was clean with a great view. The food came quick
google avatar

Yelp
Point Judith Harbor view! Ferry to Block Island. Freshest seafood right off boat laid back not pretentious! Beach right next door. Two levels indoor outdoor. Seafood market to bring some fresh seafood home. Service is good. Moves pretty quick. Bar inside. Watch the ferry and fishing boats come in & out of harbor.
google avatar

Ashlee M.

Yelp
The bartender was really fabulous and made a strawberry daiquiri and a Miami vice like a pro! She also made my son a pineapple juice with extra cheeries! Yum! He loved it and it was a super sweet gesture! I thought our food was a little mediocre. My son and I split the fish and chips and it was a bit too fishy for our liking. He can usually finish an entire order by himself but instead he opted for my boyfriends bake stuffed shrimp- which was much better! I've been here before and I'm sure I'll be back again. Ps. The strawberry daiquiri was delicious!
google avatar

Chris L.

Yelp
Great lobster rolls and fish and chips, seafood is very fresh and it's very clean and organized.we came here 3 times this summer. It's a busy spot near block island ferry . Can be a little bit of a challenge to park but not too bad. The view is beautiful, and staff is friendly. Look forward to coming back next summer
google avatar

Arman E.

Yelp
Quantesential NE sea food joint. I love all their cooked dishes (eg. Fish and chips, from ed clam, oysters, seafood platter, cheese coconut shrimp, clam chowder, ...). and raw bar. My most favorite is the lobster with a favorite drink (they have a full bar with a great bar tender). Make sure they are open before you go since they are closed all winter long, and have limited hours outside the high season, i.e. May- Oct.
google avatar

Rathanack Y.

Yelp
Line moves pretty fast. Food is goods right next to the beach is best part, you get to over look the water while you eat.

Ken L.

Yelp
The food is decent, but the attitudes absolutely are atrocious. You have an old witch taking orders behind the counter and they are about the only restaurant. I know that doesn't do free refills on soft drinks. You can go right across the street to George's and have a much better atmosphere And food.
google avatar

Scott L.

Yelp
Food was extra greasy. The inside smelled like fish. The prices were high. My son got a cheeseburger and it was so over cooked the patty could've been used as a hockey puck. They were out of grilled chicken and grilled shrimp. $90+ for a family of five. Understandable if this were a more upscale place but that's not what this place was. On a good note, the bartender lady was very nice and very efficient. The drink prices were not bad either. Everyone sitting around the bar appeared to be having a great time.

Cecelia N.

Yelp
There was a hairball in my lobster roll. We took it to the employees who did not apologize once and we asked for a new one. The person who brought it out to us just threw it on our table and said here you go. We are not the type to complain and did not ask for our money back or give them a hard time - so it was disappointing when they could not even apologize or offer anything considering I was literally eating something with a hairball in it. Lobster bisque was great, stuffed clams were way too greasy and just not good.
google avatar

Kathy B.

Yelp
Very good seafood at reasonable prices (especially if ordering lobster, given what we're used to paying for it on the west coast). Unpretentious setting right at the docks. Line was minimal when we arrived, but went down the stairs by the time we left, however it moved quickly. You'll have to crack your own lobster and pay a deposit for the nut cracker needed to do so which is humorous. Friendly bar staff and patrons in the bar area, many of whom brought their dogs with them which added to the laid back vibe. One large yellow lab named Tuna is a regular and decided to plop himself at our feet which made for a memorable and welcome addition to our dining experience.

Shawna S.

Yelp
Champlain's has been a staple in the area! The food is good, the staff are friendly. The ambience is awesome! You can eat inside or outside, the views either way are great.
google avatar

Oli M.

Yelp
Sitting on the deck drinking a cold one with the Atlantic breeze coming in off the water eating some excellent fried seafood really makes quite a perfect afternoon. The bar has excellent beer on tap and the bartenders are friendly and engaging. The beach directly south of Champlin's is relaxing with a good wave for playing in. It was so good on Friday we went back on Saturday!
google avatar

Galen B.

Yelp
Great grilled swordfish and sweet potato fries; coupled with the views by the water and the boats constantly coming in and out of the landing is very relaxing dining spot.
google avatar

Alexandra C.

Yelp
The food was honestly okay. I honestly don't know what is the hype about this place. Maybe pre Covid the food was better but the stuffed shrimp was weirddd. I actually don't even know what it was stuffed with. My bf had the fried seafood platter and there was some weird things in there just breaded and fried. The lobster salad had sooo little lobster in it and wasn't as buttery and juicy as you'd expect it to be. The bartender was pretty cool and just very energetic which I loved. Idk if I were to give Champlin a second chance.
google avatar

Kathleen R.

Yelp
For years Champlin's was our family's favorite place at the beach for clam cakes, chowder and lobster rolls. This evening we went for the first time in about a year and it seems to have changed. The lobster roll was completely different - way too much mayonnaise and no more large chunks of lobster. The cole slaw was not good, it used to be shredded and just enough mayo. This one is chopped and tasted sweet like miracle whip or something. Clamcake recipe seemed different too...the batter didn't taste as good, and no clams in any of them. Prices way too high for what we got. Sadly we will have to find a new spot. Service was friendly though!

Judith A.

Yelp
Take one of the best views in Rhode Island, add a very basic interior with uncomfortable bench seating and add sub quality food. This describes Champlin's restaurant. There was no crowd on this cloudy Tuesday at noon. The red and white chowder were both extremely salty and the fresh flounder sandwich looked good but the fish tasted old. Clam cakes were hot and tasty. I was very disappointed in this landmark restaurant. Next time I would take in the view downstairs and eat elsewhere.

Emily L.

Yelp
Best virgin piña colada I've ever had! Very nice staff!! Definitely an amazing place for drinks and seafood. We always get the twin lobsters with red potatoes!!
google avatar

Alex W.

Yelp
From the book of "it's good, just not good for you." Fried everythang and urrytang, but man. I consider the portions quite generous for the price, and it's not overkill on the breading, it's all fried pretty lightly so you don't feel like you need a nap at the end. As a man that's had many a stuffie in my day (look at me to confirm) the Portugese stuffies are excellent, don't screw up by not ordering them.

David H.

Yelp
Great location on water. Outdoor tables overlooking water were great on this warm breezy sept day. Busy but after Labor Day , no big linear 3:30 pm Portions are good size Food however was marginal . Clam bodies plentiful, were average to small. Baked Scallops were dry and not that fast. Nice fries and red potatoes Ice cream down stairs was tasty and plentiful single scoop Pick up.. no waitress service Reasonable prices
google avatar

Ann B.

Yelp
August 25, 2018 - some locals told us to try this restaurant, they were even nice enough to show us the way and chat with us. When we arrived we saw a nice homemade ice cream place at the bottom of the restaurant. As we went up the stair to the restaurant you could see the water and parking area. My cousin and I ordered $2 per Oysters (they tasted so good)!! I didn't get a chance to take pictures of all the food we ordered but everyone liked it. We ordered Lobster rolls, and Lobster Bisque. My order had a lot of meat so much I shared with my cousin and also put some in my Lobster Bisque. We had the same order. But my order seemed to have much more meat. It was all very good and filling. As boats passed by ppl waved at us and we waved back. It is a very nice place to go an

Yelp
George's tends to get the majority of the attention off the docks of the Block island Feeeeerry...but, I like this spot too! Let me tell you a few reasons why. For starters, they have a fresh fish market under the restaurant. Nothing like eating fresh seafood and being able to buy some raw to take home. I also appreciate the fact that they serve extremely fresh options. The baked stuffed cod legit tasted like it had been caught moments prior to cooking. Tender, flaky, delicious! The clam cakes have big ol honking RI freshies packed into every bite. Nomnomzzz Lastly, I enjoy the lively atmosphere the staff produce. The raw bar was technically closed when I last went, but in Tommy Boy fashion, the staff made it happen with the colossal shrimps! The only downer is the lobster bisque is more of a broth that lacks the big chunks you'd expect in a better than average seafood joint. In a land of supreme seafood, they're def worth a try! Bon Appetite!

Daniel D.

Yelp
Restaurant review, unimpressed is putting it mildly. I ordered a cod fish sandwich with fries $17.99 that didn't include the tip. What I received is a lettuce sandwich with a hint of fish. What I received was the thinnest 3 filet pieces approximately 1/4" thick and that is including bread crumb coating. It was served on a 6" toasted sub roll on a bed of lettuce accompanied with tartar sauce and French fries. The good: Food temperate was very hot. Restaurant was very clean. Staff very friendly. The bad: Most prices are omitted from wall menu and have MP for market price Fish portion is 3 ounces or less Food is served on disposable paper plates This is counter service, you order at counter and pick it up from counter. McDonalds and Burger King fish sandwiches are better portion and quality. I would say tourist trap. I will never go back.
google avatar

Mike F.

Yelp
Definitely fresh seafood right from the ocean!!! Great portions and the staff are very friendly. The Fried Scallops and Fried clams were delicious. The White clam chowder had lots of potatoes and the clam cakes were a little light on the clams. However totally worth the money!

Barbara G.

Yelp
Had time to kill before catching our ferry to Block Island so we visited Champlin's for the first time and were very pleased. I had the fried shrimp platter with red potatoes. Huge pile of shrimp! My husband had the flounder platter and received two large fillets with red potatoes that were delicious. Casual dining where you order your food/drinks, are given a pager device to alert you when you're meal is ready for pickup. They also have a full bar. We'll definitely stop here again when in Pt. Judith.
google avatar

Arshi K.

Yelp
Triple lobsters for $49.99! Price can't be beat ... glorious ocean views, a misty breeze and large open spaces. Definitely worth stopping for lunch if you are in Galilee! Lots of fresh seafood options to choose from: Fish tacos, shrimp tacos, lobster rolls, fried flounder are just a few and large sides. The onion rings and fries were on point. Eat on or pack your lunch and take it to the beach! Either way you can't go wrong!
google avatar

Thien B.

Yelp
Great seafood spot in Narragansett area. Self serve but there seafood is fresh and the prices are reasonable. Lots of options and there is a view of the port and ocean that you have while dining in.

John G.

Yelp
Service.... There is no service..... grumpy lady at cash register looking for tip for handing you a bag of food..... food was greasy overall... clams were absolutely tiny .....tiniest piece of fish available,....overall the seafood platter was terrible.... At $39:00.... Way overpriced.... They should be ashamed for serving such low quality food.
