On the Grid : Champs Diner

"Are you a chrome-loving vegetarian who’s missing a retrofitted diner in your life? Champs is perfect. The food totally fulfills the classic diner food craving and leaves your conscience in tact by serving up a menu that is meat-free. If you're not into faux philly cheese steak, try one of their amazing vegan cakes! Also admire the wall to wall black, white, and chrome, as well as the finely tattooed staff." - Radish Lab

I had a great meal at Champs Gourmet Deli on 30 Broad St, NY. I ordered the meal of the day, which included beans, rice, pork sausages with onions, and boiled vegetables. The sausage was the highlight—probably the best I've ever had. The chicken soup was also flavorful, and it’s hard to find a meal like this for under $20 in the financial district. While the atmosphere could have been slightly better, everything else was spot on. I’ll definitely be back whenever I’m in the area.

Brilliant place! Highly recommend for anyone staying around the World Trade Center/FIDI area! We came here for our breakfast on the first morning of our trip to NYC and fell in love with the place, the food and the staff! We had breakfast here everyday of our 5 day trip and once for lunch. Food spot on every time and amazing service. Not your usual tourist spot as it’s in the middle of the financial district and it’s normal customers are workers but don’t let it put you off! Go grab some breakfast!

Google
Great lunch spot. Ordered a simple sandwich and it was way better than any similar option in the area. Friendly service too. Highly recommend!

We had a great grab and go breakfast here, before a walking tour. My everything bagel with lox was perfect. We were there on St. Patrick's Day, so we also got a corned beef sandwich, which was also delicious.

Google
Don’t like to leave bad reviews but it finally is time, everytime I go there the price seems to change and go up…. I order the same thing everytime. I used to go there a lot I stopped because I can’t eat there in the morning the employees take there lunch breaks and use all the tables. They may get more business if they gave there employees a break room instead of using where the paying customers sit so that the paying customer can sit. I would be open to going back if there was little more consistency and room. Overall food is ok

All my coworkers eat here so I ordered a breakfast sandwich yesterday for the first time and it was good with an orange juice. I ordered the same thing again today but opened the orange juice carton this time because they forgot to give me a straw and I had realized it had mold on both sides. I went back to return it & asked for freshly squeezed juice instead because I’m 8 months pregnant & wasn’t going to grab another carton of juice and it possibly have mold & have to keep walking back& forth from my job to the establishment. & they tried to charge me again. So because of that I will not be going back & letting my coworkers know not to eat from there anymore. The owner should train the employees on better customer service because it was truly an inconvenience for me & if the juice I drank yesterday also had mold that put my unborn child in harms way. I did throw up later on in the day yesterday & now think it’s related to the juice having mold.

The staff is amazing. Very cute and nice girls. They attend you quickly and give you a free bag of chips when you order. Prices are around 10 for a sandwich. I ordered one called the Manhattan and they gave it to me in around 8 minutes. They had told me that the grill was off. Which I don’t know why since it was 2:30 in the afternoon. And that they could warm it up in the microwave. And that it would taste good. Well that was a big Nono. I took a chance and ordered it still paying full price. The first few bites where good but once I got to the center it was cold and mushy. I ate it because it was my only lunch but I did not enjoy it at all after the first 3 bites. So I was not happy with my purchase.

Google
BEST BLT BAGEL EVER And the staff are also amazing

Yelp
We ate two plates of two eggs of a platter. It combines with bacons and potatoes. I had a pepper turkey blast sandwich. The coffee is blended with milk, which is good.

Yelp
I've only run in a couple of times for coffee and a cheese danish, but both were excellent. Staff is friendly and super efficient. Lines can get long, but the coffee is worth the wait and it's very inexpensive for this area of Manhattan. There is a small eat-in area that is clean and well-kept. I will be returning in the future to try more of their menu.

Yelp
A perfectly passable deli. They make decently sized sandwiches as well as soups and sides. There isn't much room inside to sit and eat so it's mostly a to-go lunch spot. The staff is friendly albeit a bit on the curt side and the entire place feels like it's stuck back in time with old signs and an interior that despite its age is still clean and serviceable.
google avatar

Yelp
Staff is super nice like you family to them, food? Well I've only had the turkey with everything on a hero but each time it better than before! I'm headed there now I'm starving lol :)

Yelp
Ordered hot food catering for an event since they're our neighborhood local deli (support small businesses!). Though their online portal was a bit outdated, I had no problem calling them in the morning and placing the order. They include delivery, setup, sternos and a generous amount of food. For $19/pp, we got to choose from 3 entrees, 2 sides and came with all utensils, serving utensils and bread rolls, salad, salad dressing, extra Parmesan cheese and marinara sauce. For 20 guests, we got lemon Rosemary chicken (really dry, would not reorder), chicken Parmesan and eggplant Parmesan with sides of roasted potatoes and Mac and cheese. Order came ~15 mins late but still set up in time for the event and was supposed to come with additional sides of rice and vegetables but tbh we didn't have enough table space for it -- but it is listed on their catering menu. Total was $438.72 after tip and tax, overall decent deal since it included a good spread, variety of food, delivery, set up and clean up. Would love to see more gluten free options if I had to add anything and would've loved to have been able to try the entrees beforehand.

Yelp
Small deli around the corner from the New York Stock Exchange. We had different plans for lunch, but this place smelled so good that we decided to stop. We had some grilled cheeses, a pastrami with Swiss, smoothies, and an Oriental chicken salad. Everyone was happy with their meal and the servings were pretty large. Everyone behind the counter was super nice. There's a small amount of seating - one table with eight seats and nine or ten counter seats. They seemed to be doing a lot of catering/takeout orders as well.

Yelp
No star if I can. We ordered the pasta fagioli soup yesterday and we almost swallowed a piece of wire that looks like it came from the metal scrub that they use to clean the pots. When we emailed them regarding the wire on the soup. They just said "I am sorry about that. I will definitely comp you on your soups the next time. Thanks for letting us know." It just sounded like it happens frequently. This is our last order with them. To all be wary drinking your soup.

Yelp
Came here for their Wednesday special. It was a sizable serving. The food was good and the turkey was fresh. The staff was very friendly and I take it that a bunch of folks are regular. Grab a seat and people watch bc it's right around the corner from that dumb bull statue.

Yelp
Loved this place! It was super busy but everyone was really friendly anyway. We had no idea what to get and I ended up trying a Turkey and mozzarella sandwich with gravy. It was soooo good omg. Next time I'm in NY I'm definitely coming back to get that sandwich again and I'd like to try more things !

Yelp
Ehh... disappointed! I can't find any other way to describe this place. I went in with extremely good thoughts about this place, only to be let down. My office is about a block, so many people in my office get food from here. A few weeks back, we had a large meeting and everyone, except me had lunch here. The sandwiches looked huge and was told they tasted as good as they looked. So, last week I was tired of having my daily soup from Pret A Manger; I ventured here for lunch. I was unsure about what to get and spent several minutes browsing the menu. One thing that caught my eye was basically everything has an upcharge if you opt for a sandwich, that's probably customary for the area, but I figured it wasn't worth it. My second thought was a Philly Cheesesteak, but I decided against it, and went with a Tuna Melt on pita bread. Maybe I was spoiled from a previous place I used to frequent, but shouldn't it be cut up into three or four pieces? This one wasn't, the pita bread was soft as a rice cracker and broke apart. So basically I ate the pita separately from the tuna. What a waste! The fries were also bland and sorta burnt. Lastly, it cost about $13, which I found to be excessive. Final thoughts: this place has a bit of everything from salads, smoothies, burgers, etc... I'll give them a plus for that, but the product wasn't so great and thought they were overpriced. However, I'll return and give one of their sandwiches a shot in the future.

Yelp
Fast service, consistent pricing, decent coffee. No place to sit down but for a quick bite it does the job

Yelp
Fastest delivery, always gets the order right. Has the best cobb salad. Hero are always good and fresh, and follows the special menu add ins!

Harry W.

Yelp
One of the best bacon egg and cheese bagels around the area (I prefer it to Leo's). Bagel is toasted crispy on outside and chewy inside. Almost always busy in the morning, but they are efficient and get your order out timely and accurately. Staff is also very nice

Yelp
After about 9 months of consistently using them for personal and catering delivery, plus personal pick-up, I gotta bump these hard-working folk up to a solid 4 stars. Gourmet they ain't. But: - the food, be it breakfast or lunch/dinner fare, is tasty, - every time I've called or visited I've encountered nothing but pleasant, if not full out amazingly hospitable, employees truly dedicated to service and ensuring that each customer gets equal attention and exactly what they want, - they always accommodate reasonable special requests, and - they're my heroes for substituting tater tots for home fries. This is the kind of small business we need more of throughout NYC, with the kind of workers who bring a smile to your face every time, making you feel welcomed, and leaving you with the feeling that they appreciate you giving them business when there are so many options out there. They seem to do a thriving business, with tons of regulars faithfully remaining devoted to them. And there is a big reason why. Be a champ for Champs!

Kevin M.

Yelp
They specifically asked if you want your hero hot or cold and when you say hot it comes cold anyway. So annoying. Who wants a cold chicken cutlet, mozzarella and gravy?! Not even the gravy was hot.
google avatar

Jim P.

Yelp
Just ok. Got a day old almond croissant for $3 plus tax, which really makes it $4. Really crowded in the morning and it appears that people are standing around waiting for a lot of orders. Just confusing and not relaxing. Maybe it will get better after things normalize but for now, it seems like it's still hard for me to find a decent croissant at a reasonable price near Wall St.
google avatar

Joanne K.

Yelp
The lunch prices are decent and it always seems busy over there. I went to pick up my Tuscany Salad and waited 5 minutes. There are *so* many options and I'm not sure if everything is good, but my salad for less than $10 was huge and filling. It's good for lunch!
google avatar

Ming L.

Yelp
I come here for breakfast and lunch! Variety of options and fresh food. The menu options are the same as the Champs on Broadway, and the results are basically the same. I notice the managers rotate between both locations, so that makes me feel like there is a consistency of management and quality between the two locations. I like the Manhattan special and the buffalo chicken and blue cheese wrap. Prepared well every time! I also get my Egg and Swiss on toasted croissant every day; delicious.

Eva L.

Yelp
I work on Wall Street so I have ordered food here for years and always delicious and then I tried the TexMex salad and OMG so delicious and I'm not a SALAD person at all!!!

Tamya C.

Yelp
Got a bagel with cream cheese and the was maybe one spoonful of cream cheese. Every 3 bites i got a taste of cream cheese. And then i gave this place another chance and got 6 slices of watermelon and 10 grapes and a cup of ice for 11.90. I couldve bought 3 watermelons and two bags of ice for that price. Gourmet prices for mediocre food.
google avatar

Jonathan I.

Yelp
3 stars for the friendly service. 0 stars for the cooks. Asked for a hot roast beef hero cooked well done and I received a semi cooked roast beef hero and the cheese wasn't even melted. I don't think I'll be returning again if it can't even be cooked to my liking. Totally dissatisfied for the $14 I wasted.

Yelp
I give them 5 stars for their homemade black & white cookie! They are AMAZING! (Of course they could be bigger!) My office orders from here occasionally and the rest of their breakfast foods: taster tots, sausage egg and cheese, omelettes are solid. They aren't amazing, but always a solid option!
google avatar

Lissette C.

Yelp
I haven't tried a breakfast sandwich or omelette that I have not enjoyed. They are fairly quick when making your order. I usually order on seamless for pickup since they are located around the corner from my office and they always call me before the estimated pickup time, which is a huge plus for everyone in my office that has to deal with a hungry woman in the morning. The staff are very pleasant and accommodating with any changes you would like to make to their standard menu options, another major plus! Overall they serve quality food at a quality price in the financial district.

Yelp
Hit or miss, mostly miss. I went in today to beat the lunch rush. Store was empty but the ladies behind the counter ignored my presence then asked the next person for his order. Discrimination by people who share a similar heritage as mine is always an odd thing for me. Then they continued to ignore me so I walked out. The food hasn't been as great lately as it has been in the past so I guess not going there anymore isn't such a loss. The food is usually good so I won't totally disregard it but I'm sick of the selective service. I'll go to Stir Cafe from now on. They treat customers better there. Price is a little more expensive but they're great with everyone & not certain ethnicities that walk through the door.
google avatar

Sydne P.

Yelp
I come here during work when I'm craving a bacon egg and cheese. It can get pretty crowded but they do a good job of moving it along. I can see how people would feel the service could be eh, but as long as you use your voice to say that you're next, you're more than fine. Prices are normal and it definitely hits the spot!
google avatar

B D.

Yelp
Was looking for a good breakfast bagel sandwich, but this is not it; the bagel is dry. I also didn't enjoy the coffee, which was too strong and they don't give sleeves for the cups, so you're burning your hand on the way to your office.
google avatar

Masayo K.

Yelp
Obviously I checked in more than 100 times. Now I am hooked on Cinnamon bun. I am not big fan of bagel here, but other baked goods are good! (and price is great). After few days of coming here, the cashier ladies had already known how I like my coffee. That is customer service. Lunch menu, they have great salad bar. Great prices in FiDi area.

Curtis R.

Yelp
Good service, good food, nice eating area! Nothing more you can ask for!!! They also have a bathroom!! Free chips! Food came out fast! They also speak Spanish and have a well explained menu. Vegetarian options are available:)

Lee M.

Yelp
Champs Gourmet Deli you are truly incredible, I had a lovely experience here yesterday. Not only was I impressed with the ambience and the atmosphere, but the food and service were great as well! OMG, their Roast Beef was absolutely yummy, such a terrific dish with incredible flavors. Staff ensured that everything was ok. My family and I plan to be regulars here.

Vidya C.

Yelp
Popped in because hubby was starving, after a long day of touristy activities. He had the Cuban deli sandwich and loved it!
google avatar

Marie M.

Yelp
Your basics here are really prepared with no fuss- you can get a decent chicken soup and sandwich but if you're ordering, it won't be cheesy and gooey like in the pictures. The 7 grain bread is the saving grace for any sandwich and the salads are fresh and well portioned. The grill closes at like 3, so do keep that in mind if you wanted something made.
google avatar

Frank H.

Yelp
Place is as charming as a coroner's office and might've been the worst cup of coffee I've ever had in my entire life.
google avatar

Jaclyn F.

Yelp
Stopped in here while walking around Wall Street. We were not disappointed with our Reuben. Absolutely delicious! Great warm and messy sandwich that was full of flavor. I'd definitely recommend it!!
google avatar

Yelp
Worst. Pancakes. Ever. If you're a pancake lover, do NOT get the pancakes .... they're TERRIBLE!! They're super small and they taste and have the same texture of those pancakes that you can just pop in a toaster. Didn't taste fresh at all .... even the syrup they give you tastes terrible. (And have the nerve to charge you .50 for each additional syrup.) ... I hate paying for a TERRIBLE meal. SMH!

Patrick S.

Yelp
I ordered a bacon egg and cheese with spinach on a egg bagel this morning. I received a phone call 5 minutes later that they had no egg bagels. I switched to a everything bagel and waited for my delivery. Upon arrival i bit into my bagel to which there was a massively long hair half sticking out of my mouth... safe to say i won't be eating the rest of this bagel.

Yelp
Very reasonably priced food (a huge plus for this part of town), large portions, great tasting and great customer service. Plus if you're a regular, the employees actually smile and say a pleasantry to you. Imagine that. Hell, sometimes they even remember names. I came here for all of two days in a row and the clerk remembered me. Seems like a small thing, but that kind of customer service at a deli is rare in NYC. Literally no complaints. Another go-to spot for FiDi people.
google avatar

Matthew A.

Yelp
Very disappointing. Everything I've ever ordered from here is either dry, bland or both. Everything they offer is overpriced like just about every other place in fidi.
google avatar

Kat C.

Yelp
In one word: solid There's always a lunch rush in this neighborhood, however this deli is consistent with its offerings of real meat, veggies, and bread. It's not a fancy fast food chain nor for the faint of heart. It's a solid NYC institution that serves the deli classics - sandwiches, salads, etc wrapped in unbranded aluminum and parchment paper. Good price for the portions. The staff are friendly and I really appreciate that they wrap items carefully in the paper bag to reduce spillage. Most people opt for take out though they generally have open seating.
google avatar

Lydia Y.

Yelp
I was in this downtown area early in the morning this week because off a meeting. I placed an order for the French toast, which was pretty average. Shoved into a tin disposable pan, it wasn't even really hot when it arrived. I ate it, but I won't be ordering french toast in a place like this again. I guess you get what you pay for.

M.C. D.

Yelp
Champs is like my cafeteria. IMO, their lentil soup is the best in the city. Really good clam chowder. Good sandwiches, great breakfast. And great staff - always busy, but very personable
google avatar

Kristy R.

Yelp
I think I finally found a decent deli in the financial district. I had been looking for a solid place to get a sandwich and finally found one. Granted this was a Seamless order and therefore was delivered, I cannot review the deli itself but I can review their food. The sandwich I ordered was pretty standard for a deli but it seems like no other place, except Champs, in this area of Manhattan could get it right. Their cold cuts were fresh and their honey mustard tasted homemade. Their prices are also fair and for less than $10, you get a nice-sized sandwich and a drink.

Vinicius Z.

Yelp
Be prepared to wait 15min for a single very simple sandwich. They will put all online and delivery orders in front. You'll leave smelling like their grill. The place is not clean.

Syd M.

Yelp
Ordered a burger that came completely raw. Asked for a refund or a new burger, but was told I had to show them the burger to get the refund or new order. The restaurant claimed the burger could not be raw because "they have made burgers for years". If it was not raw I would have eaten it. Terrible customer service and experience.
google avatar

Anto G.

Yelp
After a wrong order mixup the deli called to see what happened and why I was disappointed with my order. Great customer service with a personal touch. I will definitely be giving them another try!!

Danny I.

Yelp
Love this place ! Smoothies and breakfast burritos are killer. Owners are awesome also. Nice to have a spot with some quality.
google avatar

S M.

Yelp
The food in this place is OK the problem came from what they charged me. They put themselves a $3 tip for a regular sandwich (tip i did NOT leave). What the hell, they just hope people don't pay attention to their bills. Hell no never visitng this place again.

Ally O.

Yelp
I ordered a chicken cesar wrap that came out $9.80 and it was inedible. Not only was there nothing but chicken in it (other than 3 pieces of lettuce and a drizzle of dressing), but the CHICKEN WAS RAW. I took 2 bites and had to throw it away. I don't understand how people don't get sick eating there. Even despite the RAW MEAT in my wrap, why would anyone pay almost 10 bucks for a wrap that is essentially just meat?
google avatar

Vincent S.

Yelp
Champs is great. Worked downtown in 90's and it was the go to spot! Just started a new job in the area and I can't believe there still here! Still great sandwiches. The counter ladies are fast and polite.
google avatar

Joey L.

Yelp
I'm at Champs 3x's a week. Great food! The staff is the nicest in Manhattan! Very reasonably priced !My favorite thing for breakfast is the Lean Body Omelette and for lunch is the Oriental Salad!!
