Portland’s Must-Try Sake Lists for Pairing and Sipping | Eater Portland

"This dozen-seat, cozy sake bar serves 30 options by the glass or in build-your-own flights, with the list divided into broad flavor categories with little description. The owner is the magic here, and he has curated a list with unique sakes in mind; feel free to get chatty with him about his choices and each glass’s characteristics. The daily happy hour from 4 to 6 p.m. discounts the four-pour sake flight to $14 — the bar only offers a couple snacks, so make plans to eat well before and after your visit." - Pechluck Laskey

What a great find! This is my new neighborhood bar. Small and super cute with local artists displayed on the walls. Signature cocktails were in inventive and fresh. I tried the porch swing which was a slightly spicy, aromatic version of an old fashioned. Top quality brandied cherry garnish made it superb. The cherry on top of my whole experience was the friendly bartender "Crimson". What an amazing find for this bar! I can't wait to come back.

So happy to have this bar under new ownership, the new owners are truly making something special in the neighborhood. An absolute must visit for locals and tourists alike! It is under new ownership and the new owners are some of the most wonderful people I’ve had the pleasure of meeting! They are incredibly accommodating and serve up some amazing cocktails and food here, and if you have a drink in mind they’ll be able to serve you up a drink on request and I promise you will not be disappointed! I live in the neighborhood and this spot has quickly become a top favorite for me and my partner. Great spot for a date, to meet friends, or curl up and read your book with a nice drink and charcuterie board.

Wonderful spot! My wife and I came for taco week. The tacos were amazing. We also had the roast beef sandwich and it was soooo good, I’d come back just for that! I love horseradish. The owners were very nice and welcoming

a minute ago New Under new management, and now called the Mini Bar. This place was a perfect replacement. Everyone is very friendly and personal. You can feel the warm energy as soon as you walk into the space. The feeling under the lights making the atmosphere feel like photo development room. I truly enjoyed it. Also the homemade romesco is so delicious, let it be first thing you order! My favorite thing is the homemade Jell-O shots, they are so fun and in a real orange 🍊

Delicious drinks! Great happy hour prices! And wonderful service. Cute euro vibes on the inside and a nice outdoor seating area too!! Highly recommended 😍

Google
A jewel box European vibe on the inside, street patio outside for extra seating. The drinks were exquisite, the roast beef sliders on the owner’s bread a revelation. Swoon all over this newly owned space. AND the dogs cruising by already know new owner has treats for them. Came right in for a snack. So Parisienne.

Under new ownership, and they are very nice people. Super friendly and very accommodating. I don't live in Portland, but if I did, this would be my bar. I will definitely hang out here next time I'm in town.

Yelp
Chandelier Bar just underwent a redesign and reopened a few weeks ago. After a few years of cycling by the space, a date and I decided to spend time here and we were SO thrilled with the experience. The owners and team are fantastic. The small space is warm, well lit, and vibey. The music is at a perfect volume, ultimately making me feel like I'm spending time in a Montréal bar. The drinks are curated, and the menu is small, so one can be confident when going off-menu. We had espresso martini, old-fashioned, negroni, and special off-menu peach cocktails. After spending a few hours here, one should definitely return and spread the word about this amazing space. There is also an abundant outdoor patio, with both sidewalk seating and covered wooden patio seating, perfect for the summer weather that is imminent. The team behind Chandelier has a few other bars opening soon, so, expect to see more from this awesome group in and around Portland.

Yelp
I enjoyed a very refreshing peach margarita on a hot summer day. Chandelier is a cute and classy cocktail bar with great ambiance for a first date, or a self-date reading in their covered outdoor seating area. Owners are friendly and make a great drink. Check this place out before the rest of Portland finds out about it!

Yelp
Charming little spot, tucked away in a neighborhood but easily accessible from Burnside. Owners are kind and attentive. Highly recommend the house made focaccia and roast beef sandies.

Yelp
Perfection - ambience, service, personality - and then the cocktails and bites to match. Major swoon for this hew gem.

Yelp
Chandelier is an absolutely adorable spot specializing in classic cocktails and remixes of old favorites. The location is secluded and slightly hidden on a charming tree-lined street. While the indoor space is intimate, there's lots of covered outdoor seating. The service is great, and the bartender was very friendly and accommodating. I accidentally ordered a drink that was too spicy for me but the bartender was happy to fix up another drink for me. The drinks were well prepared and generous. Chandelier seems like a great spot for a date night or drinks with a small group but would also be a nice spot for reading or working on quieter week nights. I will definitely be back!

Yelp
Absolutely delightful! This place popped up on my radar 2 months ago but date nights are so few and far between when you have 3 kids. I was thrilled when I remembered this place as the night was drawing too a close (8:15...remember...kids...) I LOVE THE ATMOSPHERE...I LOVE THE HOST...I LOVE THE SAKE! I am kicking myself for not getting our host's name because he is such a friendly, personable fellow, I would like to think we are old friends...likewise, I wish I had written down the names of the sake I had for I am very unlikely to find them again. I imagine I will just have to return here another time! I'm familiar with sake and her Korean cousin Soju...but the selection here dips into the realm of obscure and unique. It's a little intimidating, but the host's welcome instantly calms you and assures you that everything is going to be alright...especially if you do what we did and just turn the reins over to him. With only a few questions and preferences, he will set you up with a custom flight and dazzle you with an awesome, fantastic, spectacular geek out of sake knowledge, lore, and passion! If only more people were as passionate about their craft and their hobbies and just life in general, this world would be such an amazing place...but few are...so instead come here, relax in absolute ambiance, enjoy a cheerful soul, and sip on lovely little cup of everything that is right in this world. I have found a new happy place right here in the glow of Chandelier...

Yelp
Chandelier is flat out fantastic. This tiny little sake bar is loaded with style, hospitality, and knowledge. My visit was wonderful and I can't wait to return. On an unassuming back corner in Buckman (SE 14th and Ankeny), Chandelier is easy to miss. But once you've found it, you'll be charmed almost immediately. The space is dominated by a large curved bar, and the design of the interior is on point. Huge red velvet curtains, black and white tiled floors, and some of the best wallpaper a bar could have. Behind the bar is the dapper, impeccably dressed owner. It's like drinking in Twin Peaks' Black Lodge. Love it. The music is perfect. Oh, and go to the bathroom. It's the most zen place to pee you'll ever experience. It's also probably my new favorite date spot in all of Portland. But of course the main attraction is the sake. I know very little about this spirit, and I can see how that would be intimidating for people. Thankfully, Chandelier does flights that are curated on the spot. The owner (who I think is the only employee) has a ton of knowledge and will talk to you in depth about what it is you're drinking and what makes it unique. Also how it fits into Japanese sake culture. It was fascinating. I was able to narrow down what types of sake I most appreciated and then move on to the categorized menu and find others that I was likely to enjoy. Don't come with a group. Don't come to get rowdy. But do come. Chandelier is the best.

Yelp
This place is small and intimate. The bartender had an impressive sake knowledge which is appropriate since this is a sake bar. Tasteful music was playing from a record player that the bartender tended to. I would recommend this place for date nights, a place to relax after work, or just a nice little hangout with friends.

Yelp
My favorite bar in Portland. The atmosphere of this spot is whimsical and eerie. It's apparent that the owner put a ton of thought into the little details from the golden pipes to the velvet curtains. The drinks are delicious. Try the sparkling sake!

Yelp
Spent New Years Eve here as this gem was located at the Dorian bldg. which is where we stayed for the week. what a pleasant surprise. we were out of towners and could immediatly tell this is a quaint familiar face bar, but we felt welcomed right away even though we were visiting from Sacramento. Matthew knew everyone who walked in a greeting all if them, at the same time making us feel like a small part of his top notch establishment... the sake and beer selection was amazing and he had some great new years eve specials.. we found ourselves telling our friends and neighbors about this place as soon as we got back in town... thanks for the great time Chandelier!

Yelp
I'm a 'regular' due to it being in my neighbourhood. I've been going since it opened and the quirky, Black Lodge decor combined with art deco lamps, gold ceilings, and a small bar make this the smallest bar in Portland that I love to go to. I had been watching it open, with its Asian statue greeting you outside and a chandelier above the entrance. The red curtains were closed, up until the night it opened. I rushed there as soon as possible to find a healthy selection of sake (the specialty) and a small selection of beer. They have since added some wines. The best part about this place is its intimacy. Matthew is a fantastic host, and he's always willing to connect people. It gets a little crazy on the weekends, sometimes with a DJ in the corner. The place has 12 seats in total, and that soaks up four of them. In the summer, outdoor seating augments the place. Most of the rest of the week, it is Matthew, a couple of other patrons, and a record player, where he plays jazz, funk, disco, and a lot of 70s stuff (this is the only down side for me, personally, as I don't really care for that kind of music--nevertheless, worth it for the charm and atmosphere of the place and respect for his craft). A great neighbourhood bar and a great sake-nerd bar. And a great Twin Peaks nerd bar too.

Yelp
Went in for the first time yesterday not knowing what to expect. I am not well versed in Sake but the bartender, Megan, was extremely knowledgeable and gave me great recommendations that I ended up loving. I was also very impressed by their sparkling wine selection and ended up buying a bottle to go! Everyone was super friendly and I got a handful of great recs for other bars, restaurants, films, and music. It was dope, I'll definitely be back. P.S. the bathroom is a trip.

Yelp
I love coming here after work and getting sake. This is a sake bar. My favorite is the Rising Dragon, I like to come with friends and get a set. Super mellow jazz music, low light, very cool vibe. The sake will knock you over.

Yelp
My new favorite place. A tiny hole in the wall with gold spray painted plumbing pipes on the ceiling and three chandeliers to balance out the funkyness of it all, and, a half moon bar to make the space even smaller. The night we stopped in a DJ had set up his turntables right inside the front door causing you to enter the space very carefully. The space is so small that the DJ had to keep his vinyl out on the sidewalk and was constantly going in and out to retrieve records. The DJ was really good and I especially liked the eye contact with him so that you could show him your approval of his grooves. The bartender was very professional and recommended some excellent sake. Presentation was impressive. Their beer and wine selection wasn't bad either.

Yelp
Fantastic sake tasting room. Not much for food, but more than makes up for it in the selection of the rotating sake, the intimate setting (reminds me of bars in Japan!), and the knowledgeable staff. In fact, Justine the bartender was a great guide for our small group of sake novices and aficionados by suggesting sakes based on our individual tastes. Will be back again!

Yelp
This place is a must if you enjoy sake. The owner is an absolute gem! I loved how small and intimate it was. It's a place to go for a date night or even just by yourself. I love sake and I'm so happy this place exists! I'll definitely be going back.

Yelp
Super cool spot for saké in Portland. I went from a craft beer freak to moderate sake enthusiast. I say moderate because sadly there are not many options in the states (compared to Japan). There are a few U.S. markets where options are really good but unfortunately I don't live in one. And ordering online right now is financially restrictive since those who ship have a firm grip on the market and it's pricing. Rant aside, Chandelier is super cozy and fun with a great owner/tender. What makes it especially "special" is the flight options available so you can taste the different saké in stock. Don't miss out if in Portland and love saké!
google avatar

Michelle B.

Yelp
I'm torn in writing this because it is a real gem - with a real small venue. But truth be told, the service and friendliness of the bartender (sake-tender?) was fantastic, attentive, and extremely knowledgeable regarding all things saké. I tried the sampler, and though most of the details were way over my head, I wasn't felt looked down upon or felt that there was excess pretension as I often find in the Portland food/drink scene. Setting had a unique feel (Twin Peaks inspired), bathroom was duly weird, and I enjoyed my tasting experience!

Yelp
Charming little sake bar that only seats about 10 people. The owner was an ambitious & upbeat young man with an absolute passion for high quality sake. He loves educating his patrons on the intricacies & nuances of unusual sakes. The place is cozy & and is such a hidden gem. Oh, and check out the dark & zen-inducing bathroom!

Yelp
Matt is the shit and literally the only reason you need to go here. I've never known a bartender that paid as much attention to each customer has he does. Visit this place. It's good for your health. Buy a round of sake bombs for the entire bar. Laugh with a stranger. Drink good sake. EAT THE SHRIMP CHIPS THEY WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE.

Yelp
Awesome bar. Small and intimate. Great sake. The bathroom may murder you. Matthew knows his stuff.

Yelp
Chandelier is definitely a must see in Portland! Sake is amazing, while still reasonably priced. Amazing service! Bartender is the cutest, so nice and helpful!!! Best bar service I've had in Portland by far!

Randolph F.

Yelp
Great spot. Wonderful selection of Sake. The owner is awesome. But what's with DJ Sanju?
