The Best Mexican Restaurants in California’s Central Valley | Eater

"A second‑generation restaurateur left a tech job to open a taquería in 2011 and has since expanded to multiple locations, earning a reputation for al pastor tacos and a cantina near the capitol popular with young Mexican‑Americans." - Gustavo Arellano

Google
During an off-peak hour, I visited this place and found three workers inside with no customers. The layout of the space was peculiar, with a strangely spread-out design and an odd corner resembling an indoor doggy day care. Despite these oddities, the carne asada tacos pleasantly surprised me with their delicious flavor. However, the nachos were unfortunately stale, though the salsa offered a nice kick. Regrettably, the birra taco was quite unappetizing. Furthermore, the service was subpar, leading me to reconsider returning to this establishment in the future.

Google
What an absolute ripoff! $14 for this burrito that isn’t much big than a burrito supreme from taco bell. If I wasn’t half way home I would return it for a refund. The staff was not very friendly either. I won’t be going back to this place again. Damn shame, it use to be really good.

Mike H.

Google
Been coming here since it opened and get the happy hour nachos to go. I was informed they don’t do them to go, even though I have got them to go for months. The cashier called to mgr to confirm, and yep, no go. I’ll never go back there again. If you don’t want to do them to go, then it should be stated on the flyer they have on the window. It’s false advertising at its best.

Google
They have a huge dining room. Ordered a three taco combo with Asada, Carnitas, and Cochinita. The bag of chips were large and they gave a side of salsa from behind the counter. The taco's were seriously over stuffed. My first bite of the the asada taco spilled meat everywhere, but it's not too often you get too much meat. The carnitas was my favorite of the three, juicy and just a little greasy with fresh flavors. The cochinita had way to much pickled onion but after I scraped off about half it was great. It looks like they recently added a new "Munchies Bar" for baked goods, Fruit Salad, and fresh Agua Fresca. The person working the Munchie area brought me over a sample of their fruit salad. The fruit salad looked great but I'm not a fan of Tajin so it was not for me.

Google
I am given it one star because I can't give it zero. I had previously gone to one location once and honestly I didn't know what the fuss was about Chando's Tacos, but they were eatibel not good or great. Now let's come back to this location We ordered the Taco special which gives you 3 tacos chips and pico de gallo. The first taco was al pastor, it was horrible the worst pastor taco I've had in my life the meat was hard, super greasy I am 100% sure the scraped the bottom of the container were the meat was, we couldn't eat them, second taco was birria tacos, dear God the driest birria you would ever see, we couldn't eat them either, and our 3rd tacos were cochinita, those were decent and we were able eat them. I know I should had immediately gone back and show the manager the kind of pastor and birria we received and we weren't able to eat, but I was beyond upset because I was starving and that's what we got? I know I would have been rude and would have made a scene being so mad, I threw the food away and will NEVER EVER GO TO ANY CHANDO'S TACOS AGAIN!!!

Sabrina G.

Google
I went in to eat inside, about an hour and a half or more before closing time. Specifically ordered the food dine in and when the food was ready we were handed a to go bag… the young woman that served us most definitely had an attitude. The vibes felt off after that interaction, so we took the hint and left. The food was okay, but we didn’t get what we paid for. (Added options that were not received) This location was a let down as other Chando’s locations have been nothing shy of excellent.

Tasha L.

Google
DON'T EAT HERE unless you want to die from heart disease and high blood pressure. We ordered asada fries, nachos, 2 tacos, side of beans and side of guacamole. EVERYTHING was so loaded with salt it was not edible. Even the guacamole was loaded with salt. We ordered delivery thru UberEats and their only "solution" was to let the store know becuase their policy is not to give any credits or refunds for inedible food. So we were out $70 and had no food. I will never order from Chandos again and I will never use UberEats again.

Ray B.

Google
Large dining room. Plenty of seating. We had their anniversary taco special which were good and well priced. Friendly staff & free parking.

Allyson W.

Yelp
Delicious tacos and michelaeda. Great service. Nice vibe and a variety of drink options.

Yelp
I really like chandos. Their food is really good. It can be expensive for what it is. It is American Mexican food. The part that disappoints me is I have to pay $0.75 for shredded lettuce which is almost free the cost is so low. That doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

A N.

Yelp
Delicious grilled chicken tacos!!! Tender, smokey, fall-apart delicious!!! However, they are closed for now, according to The Bee. (Went 7/23 and the sign said CLOSED)

Yelp
I had originally went to their prior location off of Auburn thinking I had plenty of time to relax and enjoy my dinner. The new restaurant owner redirected me to the relocated Chando's on sunrise. It's in the same parking lot as Trader Joe's. I made it just in time It was almost closing time so some of the choices were already sold out. The lady was very friendly and helpful. She offered me salsa and chips. Even though they were closing she let me stay and eat my tacos without rushing. Delicious tacos! I went on taco Tuesday. Chicken, fish and pork. Yummy. I'll be back.

Yelp
Great tacos ! Good fast service and convenient location, my go to for tacos , I definitely want

Yelp
I've walked by this location so many times and today I finally stopped in for lunch. I ordered the 3 taco meal, which comes with chips and your choice of guac, nacho cheese or pico de gallo. I ordered the asada, pollo, and carnitas tacos each topped with fresh cilantro, delicious diced onions, guacamole, and house made salsa wrapped in two fresh stone-ground street tortillas. I received great, fast and friendly service. At the time I went, it was fairly empty so they brought my food right to my table. Great place with plenty of space for larger parties. They have a large menu and plenty of options for everyone. I will be back!

Yelp
Always clean, friendly service and the food is tasty! I have been here three times and have had this experience each time. Thumbs up from me!

Amanda S.

Yelp
This location is closed. Arrived today, sign said closed but the inside looked like tuner were legit closed for business. Everything is moved around and looks like they are DOA.

Olga P.

Yelp
I ordered the 1 lb family chicken meal through DoorDash. First time ordering from this restaurant. On DoorDash, the description of the meal says it includes, among other things, "rice, beans...lime". Order arrived without the three listed items. I don't care about limes, but was certainly counting on rice and beans. Called the restaurant, but they hung up on me at least six times. Finally someone answered and, when I explained the situation, she kept telling me that the meal does not include beans and rice. When I asked why the description says it does, she stated she does not know, but the description is wrong. As that is not my fault, I asked how this can be remedied. I was essentially told there was nothing they could do. When I asked to contact the manager the employee asked me to hold while she "called" the manager. I was on hold for 35 minutes (until the restaurant closed) and then was hung up on. Absolutely unacceptable. Will not order from here again of course, but it is just so disappointing to see such poor customer service.

Yelp
Just had an amazing experience at Chando's. The staff were so friendly and the food was amazing. My Nor-Cal burrito was a 10 out of 10 amazing !!! I would gate keep this location but I want them to always be there lol

Yelp
Okay I literally dont know why people give this place anything less than the full 5 stars it deserves. Ive only been here in person one time and no complaints. Friendly customer service and its under construction but whatever. I most order out. I love love this food. Coming from the bay area sacramento in general has shit food. So this place yea a little pricey but whatever its worth it. Its always flavorful and I am always full after a burrito. I dont know why anyone would say their not full. Anyway every bite of my shrimp burrito is literally bursting with flavor. Yea theres different chefs and slight variances but its still good. I cant wait to see what its going to look like after construction.

Yelp
Came in last night to try Chandos for the first time. It was about 8pm on a Wednesday night, at the Fair Oaks location. The cashier was friendly and answered our questions and made suggestions about the menu items. We ordered the quesabirria tacos and Nachos. The tacos was a combo with small bag of chips (no salsa) and a drink and the nachos were asada and pretty small for the price. For just the combo and the nachos, it was $32 before tip! We were still hungry after eating this, for that price, doesn't seem right. They do not have chips and salsa for people like most Mexican restaurants have, so that was a bummer. You have to pay for a small bag of chips and get one very small container of salsa or cheese sauce or guac. I am giving 2 stars because the cashier was nice. The food was all edible, however it was pretty underwhelming for different reasons. The Birria just has a strange flavor but I did like that the outside was crunchy. The consume (sp?) had that strange flavor as well but was hot and the taco held up with dipping it. The nachos were small and the beef was over cooked or maybe old and dehydrated and some pieces were black. Again, it was edible just very underwhelming. One thing that happened with who I think was the manager or possibly owner, when he walked by us, I smiled at him and he glared at me as if he was not happy we were still there, no acknowledgment or return smile just a glare. It was odd. By this time it was almost closing time so maybe he had a long day. I feel that in this business a warm smile goes a long way to make people feel welcome and want to come back. We will not be back. We had high hopes but we get much better Mexican food at better prices with staff that are ALL friendly and happy we are there. I forgot to take pictures sadly.

Yelp
I honestly thought this location was better than Pleasant Grove/Roseville. There was no one really present, it was 7 on a Sunday night.... I was craving fish tacos. The food hit the spot. Service was fantastic, food came out quick, since no one else was in the place besides another couple... They were cleaning and properly disposing of gloves, per the observation of another individual... I'm sure they've changed things since then. I love the music that they had playing. This location was more upbeat than Roseville. I like that the parking lot was also bigger than Roseville, so it wasn't as cramped when pulling in. I can't wait to try the CH location next!!!

Yelp
Really nice people. Delish food!! Will be catering a party for us. People love it! Clean store. Friendly atmosphere.

Yelp
I never knew about this place, until I recently saw an episode of "chopped" on the Food Network where the owner, Chando, , was competing. It was Cinco de Mayo, so I figured this would be a good place to try. Everybody was very friendly, and when I mentioned the show, they were like, "oh, yeah..." And we chatted about it for a few moments.... The food was right on! I had the Ensenada taco, which is breaded tilapia. The fish was delicious and had a nice portion. The veggies and sauce were very good. I also had the Mulita, which is kind of like a cross between a taco, and a quesadilla. Your meat, your filling, surrounded by melted cheese, and a tortilla. This wasn't just melted cheese, it was melted into a crust. I love crusty cheese. It was so good. The chicken was tender and the fillings were great. The biggest surprise for me was the Mexican street corn. Usually when I get the Elote, it comes in a cup. To my surprise, it was a huge corn cob on a stick. Being that it's street food, it actually makes sense. I just didn't think about it. The corn was tender, the cheese was salty and tangy, and the lime provided a nice pop of acid just to bring everything together. Food drink and tip, the price was very reasonable I want to come back. Thank you!

Yelp
Tacos were delicious! Great special for their Anniversary! 3 tacos and a fountain drink for $6.00!

Jessica B.

Yelp
I ordered a Birria tacos combo for plate to go. When I got home I discovered that the tacos were full of chunks of beef fat with very little roast beef in them. Additionally, there were hairs wound around the chunks of fat in my tacos. I ended up throwing the entire plate away and calling the restaurant to ask about it. But the second I mentioned it, they placed me on hold and thus I am still on hold as I type this review 5 minutes later.

Yelp
It is nice that Chando's Tacos opened the Fair Oaks location this year. I once loved the original Chando's on Arden but orders took too long and the ambiance was no bueno. Anyhow, the locals don't have "adventurous taste buds", thus this Chando's doesn't order a lot of lengua, cabeza or buche. They were out of all except cabeza. Tragic. Lengua is my fav. Cabeza was very good. They receive meat orders on Monday so hit them up early in the week for your "exotic meat" cravings. Hit up Chando's on Tuesday. $11.99 gets 3 tacos, chips & pico de gallo, and soda. Or Wednesday for burrito with soda $10.99. Basically a soda for free. Other days have specials but they didn't appeal to me so I'm not sure what they were! Chips & salsa is something most taquerias should give you, but modern day inflation and high minimum wage, people be cutting corners. Better for the waistline anyway. I love the bountiful and spacious seating. Restroom, on the dining side in the back was spacious and clean, too. Staff was helpful, friendly and they got along well. The trash was full and I kindly let them know. A couple minutes later, it was emptied. Good things going on here.

Yelp
Was shopping nearby and thought we'd stop in and bring some tacos home. Service was good and the cashier indicated there was a special on street tacos. We ordered Carnitas and Carne Asada tacos to share. I admit the fillings were pretty good, but they were literally dripping in grease. We ate half our tacos and threw the other half away. I don't think that we will give this one another chance.
google avatar

Susan S.

Yelp
There is NO atmosphere or ambiance in this place at all! There is potential, since the dining area is large. Even having a worker patrol the dining area to clean tables and tidy up would go a long way to making this place more pleasant for dine in. Food was ok. I had the burrito bowl which was a good blend of grilled chicken, nicely cooked and seasoned, the right amount of beans and rice (not too much, ihmo), and fresh lettuce, tomato with a nice creamy queso sauce. Food was served in a plastic carry-out bowl with the top included, I guess in case you have to run. Price was about what you pay anywhere for a lunch.
google avatar

Aneida R.

Yelp
Update - Since posting my original review the manager of all Chando's locations messaged me directly to get additional information on the situation. Most business simply post back and ask you to call them to further discuss. However, Chando's initiated the contact and expressed concern over the situation. They took it seriously and I am confident they will further investigate the matter. I can tell they take pride in the product and service that they offer. I will definitely visit this location again because one bad apple shouldn't ruin it for all of the other employees who do their job well!

Mr. Happy ..

Yelp
This place never fails. So haven't been to this establishment in awhile. So I come in and order their Quesabirria, 3 of them, gentleman behind the counter said, "would you like the combo?" I said sure it's what I always order. He calls my name and I approach, he hands me my "combo" I said where's the drink? He said the combo is the birria And consume, I said there's no drink with the combo? He said no... okay here's a picture of the menu when you order a "combo" noticed how this says pick a drink... it's required. At this point I feel like it's a loss, maybe this place is bad luck for me and I said no cilantro and you guessed it, they loaded it up ‍ I got a few messages about this post. Let me help clarify, if you click on the picture you'll see a price, it's says $16.69. Now I'm gonna post my card receipt and as you can see they charge the same way for a combo, some of you folks need to READ.

Guilherme C.

Yelp
Amazing I love all the food here you gotta try it. Honestly it has great sauces and just great food in general.
google avatar

Darren C.

Yelp
Is this chicken the best I've ever had? .... Um. YES. Man they smoke this chicken or grill it or something to do it because WOW. The chicken Quesadilla is INCREDIBLE! I have had in three times now. Brought it home to my family too. Always great. We all Love it. Yes to Chando's everytime.

Jacqueline F.

Yelp
Fresh, and made to order. Low cost options if you don't want a combo meal Friendly, clean and great chips!
google avatar

Jackie L.

Yelp
This is the best Chando's location. Don't hurt me! The food is great. They always give recommendations on what meats are the best that day. Some items are better than others so more than one visit is warranted. This location has fast service. Order at the counter and they either call you to the counter to pick up the food or bring the food out to you if it is slower. Much needed Mexican food in the Carmichael/fair oaks area.
google avatar

Yelp
This place...... I don't know if it's the location or just the brand itseif. I really wanted to like this place. It has an extensive menu however, for the price the quality was just not there. The birria tacos were very salty as was the consommé. I wasn't the biggest fan however, I do appreciate the portions because for the price you do get a lot, it just doesn't have the greatest execution. The fries had this very old oil taste, and I wasn't a fan of the seasoning blend they use that needs to go imo. The salsas were quite good.. The churro was dismal. It was really tough and very thick just wasn't very good. The service was pleasant and kind though. Overall, if I did have to go back to chandos, it would probably be a different location just to see if I'm missing something. Also, the inside is a little bit strange very industrial. It's almost like you're eating inside of a warehouse.
google avatar

Diana K.

Yelp
I used to love coming here, but i'm sorry???? They gave me 3 pieces of chicken AT MOST in my quesadilla? Instead, they put a shit load of onions, where I can light something on fire if i wanted to after eating one slice. Nice, but no thanks
google avatar

Valerie K.

Yelp
It took me a while to finally try this place, but the food is amazing and service is great. Huge portions and authentic taste. Get your birria tacos here!
google avatar

Mel J.

Yelp
We went here on Saturday around 1:30pm. The dining area is spacious with lots of table and it seemed to be shared with Mexican sweets stand. We ordered California burrito & nachos with fried fish. The food was ready in about 15 mins. - nachos with fried fish: the tortilla chips were crispy but they tasted like store bought. The fish pieces were perfectly cooked but the breading was too salty for me. I wish they gave more fish pieces. They did put lots of cheese & green chile as well as avocado. Overall: just ok - california burrito: just ok. Nothing special. It lacked of french fries inside. There are lots of better tacos & burritos place around. Won't be coming back
google avatar

Jeff S.

Yelp
I ate here Saturday June 1st at about 11 AM after shopping at Trader Joe's. I was super hungry so I ordered a carne asada buriito with no lettuce. It came out pretty quick and once diving in the burrito was a disaster. Everything was cold the beans, meat like it was good from the day before that was never warmed up. They put about a half a raw onion in there also. Hands down the worst burrito I have ever had in my life stay away they have gone so far downhill it's sad. Glad I never ended up with food poisoning.
google avatar

Tracy W.

Yelp
Nothing beats visiting Chandro's on Taco Tuesday. Got a grilled fish street taco and two Birria street tacos and I was in taco heaven. The new location is spacious and the food is good.
google avatar

Lysa D.

Yelp
We arrived just after noon on a Saturday and the HUGE location was almost completely empty inside. It's located at the corner of a small shopping center which has Trader Joe's there. We ordered 2 mulitas (asada, carnitas) and the 3 taco combo (asada, cochinita, carnitas). The combo comes with pico and a drink. The drinks are self served and they have an interactive soda machine and a few other drinks like melon, Jamaica and horchata. It took longer than expected to get our food but the meat was delish. My fav was the cochinita. Would def be back as their food is always tasty. We've ordered from another location several times for parties at our house and it always works out perfectly. Hope they get more business soon tho!
google avatar

B. Nutz H.

Yelp
I was craving tacos and a drink. They have beer and malted drinks, but no margaritas- phooey! I did order the three taco combo. You get to pick your meat and the dip for the chips that come with it. If you add alcohol you have to get the drink with the combo and then add the booze... weird. I ordered the: birria (sinc consume), carne asada, and carnitas for the dip I got queso The food was hot, it looked good, but it was still only 'ok' It fed my taco craving but did not fully satiate my desires. If you are in a pinch for tacos this place is great, the customer service is good and it is clean- I just have had better tacos is all

D. R.

Yelp
The tacos are average and overpriced here. Five dollars for one taco? Come on. And there's never anyone in here. I don't know how they stay in business. I think I'll take my business to an authentic Mexican restaurant who will give me more value for a taco.
google avatar

Harrison L.

Yelp
New opening. Undersized kitchen. Understaffed or newly trained staff. Waited 20 minutes from time of order to getting it. Give some slack for new openings. Unfortunately, there didn't appear to have any management to address the operation glitches (I.e. sound system "skipped", loud, and w off-track (enough to have customers complain), minimal interaction with new customers to introduce them to Chandos menu selection (what's barria tacos?, what should a new customer order for best variety? Etc. Nada). Will return after a few more weeks.

Yelp
hmmmm. happy that Chando's has branched out to more locations. patronized their original location for many years. But something is missing at this location. Ordered their carne asada burrito. had a really nice fresh veggies- even the lettuce crunched! But only contained a few pieces of beef - might have been good thing though....since the beef had the toughest chew. Where was this beef from? not sure, but it wasssss sooo tough - needed a chainsaw or some serious metal teeth to chew through those few pieces of beef. Perhaps Chando's needs to seek another supplier for their beef. And what happened to the salsa bar? slim pickings and it looked pretty "rough. Was it because they were closing soon? We arrived there a little after 7pm on a friday night. I think i will continue patronizing their original location instead. Two stars for the fresh lettuce and minus 3 stars for the tough carne asada, just a few pieces of beef in my burrito, and for the rather "sparse" looking salsa bar. Chando's, you guys can do better.
google avatar

Nancy L.

Yelp
i loved chandos and am so happy they opened a spot in fair oaks! i first tried their food truck and was really impressed, and this location is no different. the tacos and quesadillas are tasty and their salsas are great. this is definitely not an authentic spot, but it still hits the spot if you're craving a quick bite. their prices are competitive for the area. definitely not as cheap as your side street taco stands, but also not over priced. i personally recommend going on tuesdays for their $2 taco tuesday deals! the street tacos (carne asada, pulled pork, and birria) are all $2 on tuesdays and really tasty.
google avatar

James S.

Yelp
I recently used Chandos online ordering to cater my company anniversary party in Fair Oaks. It was very easy to complete the order and their food was incredible! The Chandos team provided all the extra sides along with the taco boats. We ordered the pre-made tacos....chicken, asada, carnitas and veggie tacos. All were fantastic. I highly recommend Chandos for any size event!

Sandra P.

Yelp
Terrible food and service. The carne asada tacos were the worst. The meat was so hard, it was clearly reheated. It was dry and hard. I will not be coming back!
google avatar

Brandon M.

Yelp
I would love to give this place 5 stars after hearing raving reviews.. It's just not five stars it's okay..,but I was expecting something better..

Stacy B.

Yelp
The girl taking my order was nice but the food was awful. I ordered the Birria nachos to go. Whenever I have ordered nachos to go they are in a large square container so that you can get to the chips under the toppings. Mine were in a container that looked like it was meant for a burrito so could not get to any of the chips.Too much of the cheese sauce so my chips were soggy. Had to use a fork to eat it. The cheese sauce was not good, the meat was bland and too many onions.
google avatar

Elizabeth H.

Yelp
Keto friendly quesotaco was the bomb! I ordered the lettuce wrap taco as well but I preferred the cheese taco!
google avatar

Rick K.

Yelp
Service was very good. Fries were very good. Mulitas and tacos were a bit dry (compared to other locations and the truck). A bit pricey for dry food, but those fries were really good. The restaurant was quiet and nice to dine in...not busy at all on a Saturday evening at 6pm. Would give them 3.5 stars if I could. Will come back again.

D M.

Yelp
Don't waste your money. Food is not consistent. I've been here 3 times now and the food tastes different every time. One time I got a really great tasting consommé, then never again. It tastes and looks like salsa. WTF?!! Why? It was great one day then they decided to put salsa in it. I can't even. My burrito and mulitas was ok, but not great. Don't waste your money here.
google avatar

Robin B.

Yelp
Was very disappointed with our recent visit to the new Chando's location on Sunrise Blvd. We waited for a couple of minutes for one of the girls to stop chatting with an associate and come over to take out order and she was fairly rude in response to our questions about the menu. The dining area was dark and there were no cups our for the salsa station. There was just one person cooking, so we assume that was the reason that it took so long to get our tacos. We will not be in any hurry to go back to this location.
google avatar

Glen D.

Yelp
A surprisingly large taco shop. There's a large selection of drinks, and that's always a plus in my book. The tacos are pretty good, and so were the nachos we ordered. I felt like their salsa bar was pretty minimal. I felt like the service was a little slow. The bathrooms were clean. all in all, not bad.

Yelp
Have been a big fan of Chandos since relocating from San Jose a few years ago. Came here today because the website said they opened at 10 as did the sign in their window. Got there at 9:50 and waited in the car and walked in at 10 and one of the ladies there said sorry they don't open until 11. Looks like management or staff has some issues. Please update hours to reflect the actual time your location is open on yelp and your website. I am on the fence if I will ever drive out of the way to get Chandos again.

Yelp
So having read some negative reviews, I must say, I wonder if they have a new chef, or were there a few gliches in their early open days? What we had was FABULOUS. STREET TACOS as good as any I have eaten from local food trucks or from vendors in Mexico. Wonderfully spiced to suit the meats, all meats cooked to bite tender, cilantro & onions diced small, and tortillas heated enough to bend and cradle the contents without falling apart. Each taco came with a lime slice, a small quarter of radish and a squirt of mild salsa meat approiate. I got some of the hotter salsa from the bar. Delish!! My pop had his favs (pollo & carnitas), my hubby had a burrito of carne asada and I had tacos de lengua & tripas. Every bite was exactly as if I had spent the time cooking at home. Our only complaint was my hubby wanted shrimp in his burrito but that is not offered, even for a higher fee. Strange. Maybe management should reconsider yhis (hint hint). I don't recall seeing fish offered either, but think I saw beans for vegans (assume they are cooked appropriately, I may need correcting on this). Sadly their dessert section Xolo was out of house doing business elsewhere. From the equipment & items in jars & containers it looked like they have tasty offerings. We will definitely be repeating our custom. I didn't get photos due to being hangry. Sorry. My bad.
