Chang'An

"Diners flock here to indulge in the waterfront views and the sometimes-fiery culinary specialties from Shaanxi, but the signature theatricality is what gilds the lily. Peking duck is given a prima donna treatment: it must be ordered beforehand on the phone, later to appear tableside with a fanfare of flambéed rum. After the choice morsels of crisp golden skin and tender meat have been artfully carved and served, you’ll even get an encore, where the last bits of the duck are transformed into a soup or a rustic peppery stir-fry. Those unwilling to make an advance commitment will find no shortage of other diversions, from pricy seafood delicacies to hearty dishes of roast lamb, not to mention satisfyingly chewy hand-pulled biang biang noodles." - Michelin Inspector

Food 1 star Service 2 star Atmosphere 3 star Overall 2 star This restaurant is approaching their 12th year anniversary and I believe it’s not know for a reason. We came here to celebrate my birthday and upon my entry to the restaurant I was greeted in Mandarin. I guess it speaks for its target clientele. We ordered lobster, leeche prawns and smoked fish and asked for low sodium for all dishes. They are able to adjust the sodium level however all the dishes are below expectation. The smoked fish does not have any smoked flavor other than the show they put on at the table. The fish is coated with a sauce that’s primarily sweet without too much of other flavour profile. The leeche prawns arrived after we almost finished the smoked fish. And unfortunately the prawns are not as hot as I expected them to be. Not sure how long it’s sitting at the kitchen prior to serving. Upon our first bite of the prawn the lobster arrived which was very bad timing - seafood needs to be enjoyed while they are hot and given the prawns were not quite hot to begin with, now the lobster had arrived. Most other restaurants would offer an option to add noodles or sticky rice at the bottom of the dish to absorb the sauce and flavor from the lobster. They did not offer this option. The deep fried vermicelli under the lobster serves no purpose other than adding grease to the dish. We offered our feedback about the bad timing of the prawn and lobster dish and the server was kind enough to offer us a free dessert. The matcha and raspberry mousse cake. For mousse cake I expect the texture to be smooth and creamy. Not the case. They use too much gelatine that the mousse tastes more like hard jello. I’m not sure how this restaurant is recommended by Michelin guide as the food is totally below standard and expectations - not to mention their steep pricing. I do not recommend this restaurant and have intention to revisit unless their quality of food improves significantly in the future.

Title: Outrageous Price Gouging – Loyal Customers Deserve Better I’m beyond disappointed with Chang’an in Tustin. I’ve been a loyal customer for a while and used to love their food — but what happened recently is simply unacceptable. The same Teng Jiao Fish dish I used to order for around $40 has suddenly skyrocketed to $78, with no change in portion, quality, or ingredients. That’s nearly double the price — for the exact same dish. This kind of price gouging is nothing but disrespectful to returning customers. It shows a lack of integrity and makes it very clear that they care more about profits than customer loyalty. I won’t be returning, and I’ll make sure to let others know about this ridiculous pricing. There are plenty of other restaurants in the area with better food and fair prices. Chang’an has lost my trust.

I recently visited Chang’An for the first time and was impressed by the overall experience. The highlight of the meal was definitely their famous Peking Duck—crispy skin, tender meat, and beautifully presented. The restaurant’s ambiance is elegant. Service was attentive. Will go back again for sure!!!!

Changan wins at his location. If you make a reservation before dawn, wow, you will have a 270 degree millions of views there of Vancouver. Roast duck is popular with a great presentation and multiple choices on the good. The waiter is very kind and patient to lead me to the parking lot meanwhile he alerted me on the coldness. Thanks for giving me a great experience.

For me, Chang’an is hands down one of the best places for Peking duck—not just in Vancouver, but even compared to other countries, rivaling some of the best in China and Hong Kong. The duck is perfectly crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and a true culinary masterpiece. I also loved the Lion’s Mane mushroom with chicken soup. It has a soothing, herbal-like quality (though not quite herbal) that’s incredibly relaxing and comforting specially this winter season. The honey spare ribs was another one that stood out—crispy on the outside, with meat so tender it practically falls off the bone, and perfectly paired with powdered Chinese spices on the side, which elevated the flavors even more. The Crystal prawns stir-fried with spinach noodles was one of the star of the show in the noodle category—light, flavorful, and something I’d highly recommend. Another great one from te noodle category was the beef with hand-pulled noodle soup, with a rich, flavorful beef broth that’s both hearty and satisfying. Drinks, service, and value are all top-notch. Parking is free; just grab a coupon at the entrance and leave it on your windshield. With all this, I can confidently say I’ll be back again—especially for the duck, prawn noodles, ribs, soup, and other things I haven’t tried!

The view is very nice here, especially on a sunny day by the water. Parking is also very easy, although it may be confusing getting here if it’s your first time. Food is excellent. Lots of people talk about the duck already so I’m going to expand on other dishes. I recommend the hand made spinach noodles. It’s a nice small portion and very flavourful. My husband enjoys the wagyu fried rice and boneless beef ribs. The beef is very tender! I also love their passionfruit pudding dessert ^^ Service was excellent

Food was great! Service was not great for a fine dining restaurant. The worst interaction with the server was when I paid for the bill. It was my boyfriend’s birthday and I did not want my boyfriend to know how much I was paying so I tried to do it all quickly. I tipped $40 total on a $530 bill, I originally wanted to tip $20 but changed my mind last second. I notice a change in the waiters face as soon as he sees the tip and he asks if there was anything wrong and I told him the food was great. He then says well you didn’t even tip 10% and points to the $40 tip. I am confused and ask him if I’m required to tip a certain percentage, to which he says no and I respond “I don’t understand what the problem is.” My boyfriend and I leave after that. I tip based on service. I just didn’t think it was good, so if you go be prepared for the servers to request larger tips if you are tipping less than 15%. That last interaction soured the experience for me and I’m very disappointed as the food was phenomenal. When we were ordering the food I was trying to ask the server about the Peking duck I had ordered the day before and his response was “we are sold out” in a rude tone and I had to repeat to him and explain that I had ordered it yesterday and I just want to confirm they know that and it will be served. It was not a big deal at the time so I didn’t think too much of that interaction. My boyfriend and I throughout the night would have to wait a long time before anyone would come help us. When the Peking duck was being served the chef had finished cutting the duck skin and he stood there continuously looking around as no one was nearby to help serve the duck. Once we finished eating they did pack most of our food for us except for the dumpling soup that comes with the Peking duck. I’m not sure why they decided to toss that out as I did not even take one bite of it since I was already so full from previous dishes.

Comfortable sitting area. Good service. Food is Okay level. Duck is not too juicy. A little bit try. 肉夹馍is pretty good. Xiaolongbao is lamb filling. That’s quite different.

Yelp
Nice place with linen, free parking and view. Roast duck has to be ordered ahead of time. Service acceptable. 4th time coming here first time paying as a host. Would probably return to explore the many dishes. Beef tongue was very tender the highlight.

Yelp
Expensive and nicely decorated place to eat sliced duck skins and see it on fire. Overall okay, but won't come back again.

Yelp
Chang'An is such an upscale Chinese restaurant experience. They're well known for the Peking duck, which seems a little odd since their name would suggest they specialize in Xian food. However, they seem to serve cuisine from all over China and it was all quite delicious. We made reservations ahead of time and also had to reserve the duck. They called to confirm at 3PM the night of the reservation in order to begin their preparations. When we arrived at 5PM, the place was completely empty, so definitely go early if you want the most attentive service. They also have a covered parking lot reserved specifically for the restaurant. They give a paper slip to place on the car dash when you check in. As others have mentioned, this place is definitely expensive. It's debatable whether the food is worth the price, but the location, view, service, and ambiance certainly matched the price point. The tea, although very expensive, was probably the best tea experience I've ever had at a Chinese restaurant because they keep the pot warm and are super attentive if refilling cups and the pot overall. Definitely had a great experience here but it certainly was not cheap.

Yelp
Elevated Chinese cuisine coming from an expat who's family are loyal customers to Western Lake and their history of service for the Chinese Canadian community. Chang An help me understand how Chinese fine dining stands out from the regular seafood restaurant fare as the specialty dish is Peking Duck. However aside from Quan Ju De and the now shuttered Beijing Peking Duck, there isn't many options for truly authentic Beijing Peking Duck and a to celebrate the last day of the Lunar New Year and a birthday I asked my family to go to the Chang An, a reservation and preorder later, we made the decision to there to celebtate We arrived at the restaurant and was greeted with a nighttime riverine views and an interior inspired by Xia dynasty decorations and the chef's at work for tonight's dinner. The menu itself is upscale and reinvented flavors of popular dishes in Beijing cuisine, ranging from beef tenderloin, cold noodles and beef tongue. A lot of these dishes you would see a regular restaurant but the flavor stands out. One note is the tea is also kept warm using a candle type heater as well as heat resistant glass teapots so the tea stays hot without steeping too deeply and becoming strong and bitter brew. As for the main course, the Peking Duck here is a refired dish, after spending time cooking for the reserved guests. It is brought out again to be carved with rum serving as the catalyst for the reheating. Carved to large slices and given a choice of the traditional scallions and hoisin or a French inspired Pear and strawberry jam. The dish redefines the traditional style of of Peking duck and the following course instead of just the bits of duck used as filling for lettuce wraps, was instead deep-fried as a snack of sorts. I had a wonderful experience and one of a kind experience at Chang An and want to bring some experience diners one day to discover why Vancouver Michelin restaurants serve Peking duck

Yelp
A beautiful setting and the duck was impeccable! Definitely a must have at Chang'An. We had the crispy duck skin to start and the meat were skillfully presented to be paired with the traditional wrap. The bones were fried with cumin. I love how succulent and fresh the scallops were. A dish I can have all the time. Cooked perfectly! Another very memorable dish was the abalone with pork belly and quail eggs. The abalone was perfection. Every bite was simply heavenly. Lobster with urchin sauce added even more sweetness to the lobster, a welcome surprise at our table. The prawns with mixed vegetables were really nice and clean. The prawns were juicy and were so good.

Yelp
Once in a while guess it's okay to splurge a little and Chang An can be your destination of choice . No their prices aren't exorbitant per se , but $108 for a roasted duck isn't exactly pocket change either . However if you're willing to spend that much for your poultry fix then I'm telling you won't regret it . With its unbelievably crispy skin and succulent meat this is one of the best roast duck I've tasted . Ever . Service is impeccable too , almost hotel restaurant-level . Oh and a side note : I like them waaay more than its gimmicky predecessor - Stonegrill . Still remember them ?

Yelp
They serve quality food in a prime location located at the first floor underneath a yacht club. The place has a view to the Granville island and harbor. But simple dishes are pricey with a small portion. Not fit for ppl like us living in LA area where food serves in large portions. Ambiance is modern and fancy. Service is superb.

Yelp
You know, I REALLY REALLY wanted to like this place. I now live very close to it (less than a block away), and quite frankly, don't know of too many Chinese restaurants with a patio, let alone a heated one. While there are some excellent aspects to this place, it only gets 2 stars because based on two dinners (one dine-in, the other take out), the price does not justify anything more than two stars. I also want it said that I do not believe Chinese food should be "cheap" - China has an amazing culinary history that most North Americans are oblivious to, and do not know the breadth of flavours, quality and techniques that is available to explore outside of the the typical "Western Chinese" dishes that people are accustomed to. Ok, first the good parts: Service 5 stars: excellent, courteous, knowledgeable and friendly staff. Absolutely NO complaints. Our waiter gave us a great recommendation for an EXCELLENT bottle of wine that went great with the food, and in fact did NOT try to up sell us, which is always appreciated. He also recommended the best dish, which was to pay the extra charge for getting our second course of the Peking Duck done as the cumin deep fried dish. Patio gets 5 stars: honestly, a gorgeous patio, heated, beautiful view, especially at sunset. Very romantic!! The sautéed Chinese celery with dried shredded tofu was 4 stars: during our dine-in dinner, this vegetable dish was quite good. And at $20 for this small dish, it amounted to a bargain. Peking Duck second course (only) - deep fried cumin duck carcass was 5 stars. Honestly, it was stupid good. Highly recommend. Now, for the less than great aspects of it: The Peking Duck was 1 star - ok, if you're gonna charge $98 for just the FIRST COURSE, then maybe: the meat shouldn't be bone dry; the meat should have flavour; the cucumber and green onions should NOT be completely DRY and old (like as if it's been stored open in the fridge for days) and maybe you could put some effort into the sauce. We have been fortunate to have travelled to China for work in our past, and have had numerous Peking Duck experiences in Beijing over 10+ years of regular travel. The only good part was that they did not cheat us out of the Duck we paid for - we definitely got the WHOLE Duck, and the fatty skin was ok - not great, but ok. The pea tip in garlic dish for the dine in dinner was merely adequate. For $28, I think it could have been better. Now for the abysmal take out: we wanted to believe that maybe our first experience was an aberration so we ordered take out. Now remember that we live less than a block away, so long transit time is not an issue.... Twice cooked rack of lamb ($58) was zero stars. Against my misgivings, my husband insisted on ordering this. WOW. Basically, take a nice rack of lamb. BOIL THE CRAP out of it until it is dry and has no flavour left. Then put it in really goopy batter, and deep fry it in too low a temperature oil so that the goopy batter soaks up ALL that oil. That's the dish. The best part was the cumin salt dip that came with it as that was actually really tasty and I used that the next day on my eggs. I didn't take any photos. Healthy vegetable mixed ($22) - well, ok it was sort of edible so I guess it gets 2 stars. Pan fried pork and chive dumplings: this actually was ok, but probably got made first and sat while the rest of the order was prepared, which affected it. But for $23, it should have been amazing. So yeah. We're not going back unless we hear that they have a change in management or kitchen staff. But gotta say, we both fantasize about that deep fried cumin duck dish - it was seriously delicious. But for the incredible prices they charge, it needs to get much, much better.

Yelp
The first time I came here was too long ago. Decided to come back here to check it out again because craving for some more authentic Peking duck and since another place, iDen & Quanje Du, now requires a $3000 deposit to become a VIP member before able to order menu items individually, totally ridiculous in this day and age; this may work in China but not in Vancouver, I'll do a review on that place when have time cause ate there a few times. Anyways, made a reservation for this place a day before, tried for a window spot but was told they were all already reserved for. Arrived and parking was easy as it had its own parking spaces, greeted by the hostess and led us to our table. Here were the food we ordered; 1. Wontons in duck soup. Individual bowls. Might as well give me a bowl of warm water, the soup was very bland and tasteless. Didn't WON in this one. Failed miserably! 2. Stir fried lychee prawns with cashews. Nice little flavour to it, prawns were of nice size with a nice light crunch. 3. Stew Ox tail. Didn't fell off the bones, needed to be braised a little longer. 4. Stir fried house made noodles with prawns. Surprisingly quite a flavourful dish. 5. Cold crispy jellyfish. Pretty basic, had way better versions of this style. 6. Honey grapefruit spareribs. A little twisted taste then the normal sweet and sour, pretty good. 7. Marinated beef tongue. Tasted okay, not my thing. 8. Twice cooked rack of lamb. Very tasty , juicy and tender. Very nicely done: 9. Chang'An roasted duck. Nice to see a fresh roasted duck done the Beijing way and have it carved at table side. It's a little bit drier and not as flavourful as the ones at iDen & Quanje. 10. Complimentary house bread with house sauce. Pretty good actually, first plate is free, charge afterwards. Overall, this is one of the few actual fine dining Chinese restaurants in BC. It gives the diners an elegance and classy ambience feel with its classy furnishing layout and services. The staffs were quite friendly, attentive and informative on the food we ordered. Besides the soups, everything were okay. It's a nice place to take your date or special guests to if you want to try actual Peking duck and not BBQ duck like most Chinese restaurants served, and don't mind the steeper prices. I would say in terms of food quality, service, price and ambience; 3 stars.

Yelp
The food was decent, the atmosphere is nice here. Staff are friendly and the service is good but we felt pretty disappointed in the quality and taste of the food considering the price point. The Peking Duck was good, and price point is quite standard for Peking Duck. I'm not entirely sure if I'd come back again, but not because it wasn't a good experience but it didn't leave enough of a memorable experience to feel like we need to try this again. I love the idea of high end Chinese dining, and the price point isn't a turn off but the a few things just missed the mark. While service was friendly and good, it wasn't outstanding. The dumplings were good but a little dry. The Peking Duck was definitely their best dish, though obviously it is their signature dish. The table side service for this was cool. The second course of the duck was a little on the saltier side, but not bad. The other dishes we had were the fried green bean and eggplant and the oyster mushrooms. Both were great but overall nothing too special. The passion fruit pudding dessert was very delicious though! I'd recommend trying this place at least once on your own, as it was a decent dining experience, and worth trying even for the Peking Duck.

Yelp
We were recommended this place by my moms friend in Seattle! It is famous for their Beijing duck which is why we wanted to come. My mom also explained that the name "Chang an" comes from the name of the city in China where both she and this cuisine are from. She really appreciated the appetizer of the traditional Chinese bread with chili oil and said that the pairing was something she grew up on. The restaurant was super clean and the service was really professional and polite. The location is superb too being on the Vancouver water front with a nice skyline view. Although delicious and I enjoyed everything I tried, be warned that the price is really quite steep. We ordered obviously the Beijing duck with some stir fried dishes to go on the side. I really enjoyed both the stir fried string bean dish and the stir fried pork and tofu! The Beijing duck was pretty par for the course with a delightful untraditional addition of strawberry sauce and pears to go along with the duck. This pairing actually worked surprisingly well! The wonton soup that came after was comforting but maybe lacked some richness. I also thought the peppercorn ice cream was quite unique because of the deep numbing aftertaste you feel after eating it. Overall this restaurant was good and I enjoyed it but did not blow my mind for the price tag and it but I maybe did not enjoy knowing I paid 350 for it.

Yelp
Food is super delicate and delicious. My favorite is the lychee prawn and Peking duck.

Yelp
I had a tough time reviewing my experience here; some aspects were great and some not so great. We came for New Year's Eve dinner and knew that we were in for an expensive dinner, but we have had expensive dinners before and if the food is good and everything else is as well, then it was worth it. The first negative mark was that with the exception of one server, everybody spoke Mandarin to us. I do not speak Mandarin. My wife can speak both Cantonese and Mandarin but she also speaks English. We ordered a set dinner which looked pricey at $278 for two, but we figured if we ordered a la carte the price would be close to it anyways. Don't get me wrong, the Peking duck was good. It was prepared table side and I give full marks for overall presentation. But the meat was a bit dry. The skin was tasty and the wrapper was thin and delicious. The other dishes were good but all overpriced. With that being said, they were better value than their competitor Quan Ju De.

Yelp
Good food, great location. This restaurant is right beside the Yaletown Riverwalk and offers great outdoor seating options. We id not plan our visit here, so we were unable to get their Peking Duck which is a must try as per most reviewers and we will be sure to be back to get it soon. We were told you need to call in advance and reserve it to be able to eat in - so please do that. We were also told you can park for free in the parking available outside if you are dining in here - we did not take the car, so couldn't verify but you should try it before you pay for the parking. We order the roast chicken - very good and the presentation was beautiful, came in a cage. We also got the Qisan noodles -though the server warned it is spicy, it was not spicy at all, so go for it! To drink, we got a mocktail and Mango Margarita. To be honest, I found the Margarita very light, almost no kick but it tasted good - just not enough alcohol! Servers were well informed and made good recommendations and gave fair warnings on what gets served quickly and what will take time - very helpful when you are dining out with a one year old. Our server also got us hot water to warm baby milk - so kudos for that! Service was fast for a busy Saturday evening - good place to be, especially if you can sit on the patio by the river.

Yelp
Pekin duck! I'm so happy that there's a fabulous restaurant downtown that does a very nice Peking duck! (Obviously order in advance). This was a stellar experience.. and I know everyone says Richmond does better duck. I believe you'd be splitting hairs at that point. Great service. Amazing food. Fantastic ambiance. And fair price. Will go back.

Yelp
I approved that this restaurant gives you the original tastes of Shaanxi cuisine. As a person born and raised in Shaanxi and has lived in Canada for many years, I'm impressed and assure you this is the best restaurant I've ever had for Shaanxi. Hiding in Canada, way better than Toronto's any restaurant. So I asked the manager and was told their chefs are from the local restaurants I used to have all the time back in Shaanxi, brings me back to my old time in hometown. The view and the vibe are also good for either business, dating or family gathering. Worth the money.

Yelp
We enjoyed a beautiful Mother's Day brunch at this seaside restaurant in downtown Vancouver. We had the special Peking Duck and it was delicious. Every time we eat here, we are happy. Happy with the food, the service and the view.

Yelp
If you're looking for Perking duck I guess this is the place to go. I honestly don't see the hullabaloo when it comes to Peking duck. But this one does standout because I haven't seen the process of carving the duck table side. The presentation was pretty and elegant; everything about this place was all about presentation and service, it hits all the top marks. The food and service was superb. Only thing is the price point, I mean if you want good food expensive isn't always the best choice but don't take my word for it, Try it out! P. S. MAKE SURE YOU CALL AHEAD AND RESERVE A DUCK BEFORE 1500p and bring the big wallet.

Yelp
Other than the duck and everything else was just so so. wouldn't really give it another try. even for the duck they will ask if you want the second dish to be a soup or a deep fried duck for $15 more. do not go for the deep fried duck, total rip off, just ended up being a dish of extremely salty bones.

Yelp
Great ambience and location that charges a premium for Chinese-style food from the city of Xian - a premium as in $28 for a pot of tea! They do offer free wifi if that helps. It's in a hard to direct location on the seawall below the Granville Bridge but they do offer a free parking pass for diners. We were walking the seawall and decided to grab lunch Monday 11:45am in early March. We were the only customers as the kitchen & dining staff was still setting up. We read some favourable reviews about the Beijing duck which they don't serve at lunch and a fat noodle dish. They served us a complimentary and faintly-spicy, chilli garlic with bean dish to be spread on 2 small, triangular wedges of pita. Excellent! We ordered the $18 stir fried green bean with eggplant which was a 4 out of 5. Delicious and worth getting again. Also, got the small $15 Bowl or minced pork belly noodles which was a 3.5 out of 5. The noodles were tasty, but we both felt the sauce was bland needing more salt or flavour. The pork belly was also slightly over-cooked and had the density of canned tuna. By 12:30pm there were 3 full tables of Mandarin speakers and one table with Cantonese Speakers. Still hungry we ordered the $8 House Made Scallion pancake which we found slightly dry and 3 out of 5. Wasn't as good as most Taiwanese restaurants or even the frozen ones I fry at home from T&T with generous amounts of oil. Would definitely come back again for a special occasion for the view and ambience which is beautiful, as well as to try some of the other dishes with a larger group. A lone gentleman to the table behind is ordered an individual $20 Matsutake Mushroom & Fish Mok Soup in the largest dish/platter I've ever seen. It smelled delicious! Our lunch for 2 drinking just flat water was under $55 before tip. Like many restaurants in Vancouver you're getting small portions for what you're paying but the food quality was good, ambiance and views excellent and I can't remember ever having tried Xian-style food. We read some complaints about the lack of service but the 2 female servers were really attentive with us despite not being strong English speakers. Our water was always filled and they were within reach when we needed the menu for more food. Definitely worth a visit with great company!

Yelp
This place is pricey... so for all the dough you may spend on the food you get ... An interesting menu full of selections to please everyone, a view overlooking the water from the same building as the False Creek Yacht Club, choice of indoor or outdoor seating and above all, delicious Chinese fare served by knowledgeable & friendly staff. A great all round meal & dining experience.

Yelp
I was able to secure a last minute reservation for four on a weekday for 5:30pm, which was the beginning of their dinner service. No peking ducks left, but was not a huge deal for us. A huge bonus about this spot is the free parking - just remember to ask the staff for a tag to put on your windshield when you check-in at the front. This spot is at a prime waterfront location and naturally there is a hefty price tag on the menu. Frankly, I think this is a spot for good atmosphere and service, rather than good food. The staff were attentive as they were very on top of it when it came to table service. The ambience was calm and you could have conversations with your table without feeling like you had to compete with the noise around you, which is definitely not always the case at Chinese restaurants. This spot serves northern Chinese cuisine, but I think they have taken a more refined twist to it. The dishes are all quite delicate looking, with nice dishware and clean presentation. Honestly, I did not find any of the dishes that particularly memorable. Some of the food was a little bland to my surprise. On the dishes I tried: -bread with a bean paste spread was a complimentary starter, nothing special but definitely a nice touch -green onion and peppercorn chicken was a little too dry -deep fried yellowtail was fried well, could eat the fish whole, down to the head -braised chilli and spring onion black cod in fish broth was quite a let down and not worth the price tag of $78. They were out of black cod, so they substituted with snapper. The fish was debone/sliced thinly and soaked in a clear broth of jalapeño peppers and spring onion. This felt like more of a soup than actual entree. Flavours were alright, but portion size and substance just was not to par. -pork belly sliders aka rou jia mo was probably my favourite. The meat filling was juicy and flavourful and the pita was crispy and chewy at the same time. Tasted just like the ones I had in Xi'An. The jalapeño chilli on the side was a nice touch to give the mo some kick -bian bian noodles were quite good, the portion size just a little small. We shared everything between the 4 of us and everyone pretty much only got a single strand of noodle, so I would not recommend this dish to share. -stir fried green beans with eggplant was not a bad dish. I liked the crispy fried eggplant and the northern Chinese flavours were definitely there Overall, the food was not consistent. There were some good parts, but also lots of room for improvement if they want to pride themselves in being an upscale dining experience. With the service and atmosphere setting quite a high bar to start, the food was a bit underwhelming afterwards. Not sure if the peking duck would have changed the experience, so perhaps that might be something to try next time.

Yelp
We came recommended by Chinese friends and in the mood for a Pecking Duck No duck but everything else was the best Chinese food i've had. From king crab of Alaska to boneless chicken simply amazing. Can't wait to come back for the duck.

Yelp
Everything was delicious. Great view, good service, delicious food. The roasted/fried chicken was out of this world. They fat noodles was sticky and spicy. The big tofu curd was tasty. Even the sauce for the free bread was delicious. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Whatever -- people are complaining about price, but did you even eat the food? Did you look out the window? Did you notice the interiors? People need to calm down. Pulling up to the restaurant, walking in, getting seated, ordering, and being served--even before I ate he first bite I sensed this was going to be a 5-star. And it was! Didn't get to try the duck (they dont have it at lunch...boo), but I had the shrimp (tasty), short rib (cool presentation, not amazing flavour wise), crab and tofu soup (good but not good enough to order again), foil fish (good but too much garlic, as in i was still tasting that fish even the morning after), and the sesame sauce fenpi (like that thick homemade noodle, which was the highlight item of the meal---so frickin delicious I finished the entire plate myself, and it was a huge portion!). Had the green tea, which was also nice. Amazing view near the window, and plush interiors which you don't see at many Chinese restaurants in Vancouver. Overall, I will definitely be back. Not sure what the total was (I wasn't paying), but I would assume around $100 per person. Good! Can't believe I didn't know about this place earlier, as I love Peking duck, and Chinese food in general. Will definitely be back.

Yelp
service: 0/10 our group ended up waiting 40 minutes past our reservation time without an explanation or apology. We pre-ordered the duck and ordered extra wrappers, but they never came. The extra wrappers finally arrived after 3 inquiries to the staff, but by this time we had eaten the extra duck meat plain food: 8/10 Some dishes were creative, and I enjoyed the DIY concept. Chang'An has a unique combination of flavours so there is something here for everyone. atmosphere: 8/10 Their decor is a bit old and chunky, but the stunning island views make up for it. The parking process as other yelpers have mentioned is a bit convoluted. Pro tip: pull up to the entrance to grab a parking pass before parking and reserve your roasted duck in advance. Overall, I wish I could give Chang'An another star, but the service just wasn't on par with the prices charged here.

Yelp
Our search for the best Peking duck has been took us all over the world, from small stores in Chinatown, meat vendors in supermarkets to all fancy Peking duck restaurants in the US (NY, NJ, PA, Washington DC,GA, CA) and (Dragon restaurant, Song Kitchen and Palais de Chine Hotel) in Taiwan. When I worked on my Vancouver trip plan, Chang An Vancouver just got awarded the Best Peking Duck from Diner's Choice Awards 2018 so we made our reservation two months in advance. Their Peking duck is served two ways and duck is carved table-side. First you got is crispy skin and dip the skin into brown sugar. The skin clearly should be fat-free and crispy but lack in taste/flavor. Then, a pancake like crepe is served with thin slice duck meat, sauce, scallions and cucumber, and ,again, there is no flavor at all on the duck meat. I started to question how they got the award of the best Peking duck. The 2nd way is duck soup but the funny thing about 2nd course is no matter how many people order this duck per tale, they serve a cup of soup based on how many people not per duck. Our next dish is Pan Fired Green Onion Lamb Buns which has a very strong gamey flavor and even I eat roasted lamb rack all the time, I still can't accept such bad and unpleasant flavor. We did tell the manager and they also agreed their chief did say he made a mistake. That's it! Instead of taking it out of our bill, they offered free peppercorn ice cream which we also don't like. The other two dishes, Deep Fried Egg Tofu Egg with Abalone Sauce and Cucumber & Cold Noodle s in chili sesame are all live up to their price and will I come back? The answer is NO.

Yelp
My advise to the locals this diner is not really your weekly 'watering hole'. This place is all about 'show and tell' it means a good restaurant to impress your out of town visitors because of its so beautiful surroundings. The best dish in its menu line up is the peking duck. Although pricier than any of its competitor, you also opt to pay for the table show. Most of the dish are average at best and again, more for the table presentation than its actual flavour. The services are good and attentive but this is all expected. Take your chance if you are on a romantic date or a special celebration this is the right place to be in. Otherwise stay with the local greasy spoons and they present the same taste and flavors at half the price

Yelp
Don't know why this place doesn't have better ratings - my hubby and I, and my very hard-to-impress mother-in-law were blown away by both the food and service here. Peking Duck here is to die for. The chef carves it for you tableside. The first course is the incredibly fatty crisp duck skin, with brown sugar to dip in. Seemed weird to me at first, but I tried it, and WOW. The fried duck skin easily sits in the top 5 things I've ever eaten in my life. The second course is the traditional serving of duck with moo shu pancake wraps. They give you 2 sets of condiments to dress up the wraps: the traditional hoisin? sauce, scallion and sliced cucumbers, and then a non-traditional strawberry? (Don't remember exactly now) sauce and sliced pear. Both were excellent. Third course, we chose to get soup and not pay an up-charge for whatever else was the other option. I don't remember what else we ate when we were here last, because I'm writing this review several weeks later, literally as we're driving up from Seattle to eat here again for dinner tonight! It's that good! **BTW the peking duck has to be reserved in advance! Limited number served each night.

Yelp
Setting is lovely. Menu is extensive and interesting. Food was delicious - beautifully presented and tasted great. However I found the noise level way too loud and that destroyed the experience. The other negative was the prices. As an example there were rice dishes on the menu in the $60 range.I'm sure they were special but I didn't sample one. The other thing I found totally unacceptable was the rapidity of the service. We ordered 6 dishes and they pretty much arrived all at once. We could have been finished with our meal in less than half an hour. Not what I'd expect from a fine dining establishment.Vancouver has a great selection of high end restaurants and this one simply was not worth the price.

Yelp
The Peking duck is very good, but everything else was lackluster. Even though we were one of only a few tables occupied on a Thursday night, service was rushed. All the food arrived lukewarm/room temperature, and very shortly after we ordered, giving the impression they may have been pre-made. The truffle crystal shrimp noodles were bland. The sauce drizzled over the crispy beef tongue was a bit too sweet. I won't be back.

Yelp
The environment of Chang'An is good, and easy to park. Friendly for families with kids. All food taste good, but expensive. Almost every table has river view, so it's adaptable for family party.

Yelp
Had a lunch with my wife and a friend today. Definitely recommand it!! We had the roasted duck and couple of other dishes, none of them fails us. Having duck roll with strawberry jam is an interesting idea. We also share a pepper ice cream after meal. It tasted way better than our expectation. Sure we will comd back for another time soon.

Yelp
This becomes one of my favorite Chinese restaurants. Nice setting with good environments. You can also sit outside and enjoy your dinner with sunsets. Waiters are well trained that come up with great recommendations and always serve with smile. Foods are fresh and tasty. I love their wagyu and all different kinds of noodles. Definitely will go there again. Love this place!

Yelp
Modern northwest Chinese cuisine. Located on the beautiful Granville Island. Peking duck has to be ordered 24 hours ahead. My husband likes the sweet shrimp and lychee dish. Last time I was here was with my mother and husband, service is great and we all had a wonderful time.

Yelp
On my first night in Vancouver I walked into here after biking around the waterfront . I had seen the beautiful view and wanted to treat myself . I walked in and the hostess without smiling or welcoming me said "are you here for takeout " when I said no I wanted to sit by the water she said hold on let me talk to my manager . It was so awkward and she came back and I asked if I could have a table by the water and she said "there's a minimum order value for those tables " when I said okay no worries what is it " she looked at me and said "I don't know " so I left . It was very devaluating . Not sure why she was so rude but it was disgusting behaviour That made me feel very small . It wasn't a particularly nice looking restaurant on the inside or outside so I was a little confused when I was turned away. This type of behaviour is disgusting and unacceptable .

Yelp
If you come to Chang'an, it's most likely for the Beijing Roast Duck, so call ahead and reserve it in advance. I too came for the duck and the variety of street food/ snack it's suppose to offer. If I wanted high end seafood and fish, there are plenty of other restaurant options. Duck was good but I really feel they don't give you the whole duck. Even though they slice it in front of you, I think they only end up giving your half the duck. Then they offer you duck soup or fried duck carcass. We chose soup and it ended up being 1 small bowl per person. Really? That's all the soup our carcass produced? It's more like sharing with other ppl... Customer service is terrible. There is only one lady that was good. When I asked our waiter to recommend snacks, he recommends the highest pricing dish on the menu. Meh, that's not uncommon but his attitude makes me wonder who is serving who. Food comes terribly slow and it dragged out so long that when we paid for the bill a long lost dish suddenly arrived. Lol. imagine the WTF Anyways. The place has great ocean View and good duck think this as a high end, ocean viewing street food place... see how awkward that sounds? Yeah and pricing is way over priced. I'd probably not come back anytime soon

Yelp
I came dispite of weak rating on Yelp. But recommended by a friend. I would say Yelp is not accurate. I supposed with low number of reviews Yelp review can be very biased. Yes it is on the more expensive side but the duck is divine. Service is good if not great. The place is clean. Giving low rating because you felt it was expensive is not valid. I trust Google review more now.

Yelp
The $300 bill for my two friends and I was well worth it for this authentic, taste voyage. LIKES: from the moment you walk in you are greeted by several staff who are eager to make your experience pleasant. The restaurant sits right at the waters edge so we had a fantastic view of boats coming and going. The decor was intricate and tasteful. Our server was friendly yet professional. I've always heard good things about Peking duck. I'm glad my first experience was here. Though the edges of the meat are very greasy it had a nice crisp to it like a potato chip. They brought us some light fluffy things similar to tortillas to garnish the duck meat along with hoisin sauce and finely sliced scallions. Our other option was sliced pear with a tangy strawberry sauce. My favorite was the hoisin sauce. We ordered the appetizer sampler and I found the beef tongue to be nice and tender. We ordered a crab pasta. It was different but tasty. My absolute favorite thing was the caramelized shrimp with candied cashews and deep fried scallops. The scallops almost tasted like toasted marshmallow! It was amazing! I also really enjoyed the deep fried & stuffed eggplant. DISLIKES: we ordered way too much food! Next time I will pace myself so I can actually finish everything :)

Yelp
Made reservation for first sitting but they contacted the wrong number to reconfirm so we were told that our reservation for Peking duck was cancelled. Well, we came all the way from Montreal, but were not welcomed the way we would welcome guests in our great city. So we recommend that you extend the same courtesy to this locale and AVOID IT TOO.

Yelp
This place is pretty overrated for me. The room was extremely dark. It would be good if they were trying to create a romantic atmosphere. However that's not the case for this restaurant. All tables I saw were groups that casual groups that chatted loudly. The dishes were mediocre for their high prices. I would probably not visit there

Yelp
Meh. Duck was indeed crispy skinned and juicy fleshed. However, the seasoning was lacking; where was the five spice? The pancakes served alongside were freshly made but unevenly round (some more oval than circular). The duck soup was pretty sad; flavorless and devoid of any duck meat, just some soggy noodles and tofu. We also ordered the crab tofu (which ended up being a crabless soup) and crispy beef tongue (which was over breaded deep fried flavorless meat). The onion pancake we ordered was properly layered and studded with scallions though just a bit too greasy. Finally, the drinks were overpriced and of low quality. The Pu erh was way too dark too early on in the meal. The cocktails were too sweet. Service was reasonably good however. Basically, if you go there for anything but duck pancakes, you probably won't enjoy yourself.

Yelp
Not worth the price. The roasted duck is not genuine style. Ordered fried crispy beef tongue, disaster... I would give 0 star if I could for food. One star is for the environment, one star is for the service.

Yelp
One of my favorite places to visit when I come to Vancouver! Beijing duck was good.

Yelp
We ordered the famous duck and bunch of other dishes. The taste was not bad, but everything was not worth the price. We live nearby and realize the view and location don't come free. Nonetheless, we won't go back again.

Yelp
Vey expensive and not good. Unless you are Asian this place is not for you. The food is mediocre and quite odd. We ordered prawns and they came out served with potato and yam crinkle cut fries on top- no joke. I have travelled to Hong Kong- Philippines - Singapore and Thailand and I know and can appreciate good Asian food. Don't waste your time here there are so many other incredible Asian places to go- where your wallet and tummy can be happy at the same time.

Yelp
Actually this place is a little bit disappointed. The Peking duck was just Ok in terms of flavor, too small portion compared to its price.

Yelp
We decided to check this place out. We got there as soon as they opened. Ppl were waiting to be seated. An older man asked us how big our party is and I said two and pointed at a stroller. He looked and THEN asks if we had a reservation. Well, we didnt so we left. We ate at another restaurant right across it. What really ticked me off is we can see that this place was empty, even after we finished our meals. Cant help but think we were snubbed.
