The 15 Best Restaurants In Durango, Colorado

"You’ll find Durango’s best Thai restaurant just north of downtown in a small, stand-alone building marked by a beautiful mural. Chang Thai started out as a food truck, and their massive popularity led to a brick-and-mortar spot where they also do a ton of takeout. If you like your noodles spicy, their pad kee mao hits the spot with a balance of heat and smoke. The chef takes their spice levels seriously, so order accordingly. The dining room is pretty casual, and you’ll get a good view of the kitchen working hard to crank out the long list of orders." - kristin smith

Google
Decent spot but nothing that really stood out. The flavors were a bit muted for Thai food. Staff were nice, the place was small and humble. It wasn’t a bad experience, just not one I’d go out of my way for.

Google
Food tasted really good. I ordered Tofu basil fried rice and pad thai with tofu. Portion size could have been better but you can have extra for couple of bucks extra. The sauce tray helps tp enhance the flavor of the food. Price was a little high compared to other thai restaurants but it was worth it.

Google
We had one of the best tom yum soup, thai fried rice and thai tea here. All three of those felt quite authentic and delicious! This is such a place of relief after long hike in the junction creek.

The food is absolutely delicious and full of authentic Thai flavors! It’s easy to find, and the quality is consistently great. Highly recommend for anyone craving real Thai taste!

Google
Found this little hole in the wall by googling where to eat today. When we pulled up I was a little hesitant... but the service was quick and very friendly. The Thai Tea was delicious. And the food... 5/5! 💯 recommend giving this place a try!

Google
Best pad kee mao I've had in town. Nice wide noodles and good strong basil flavor. Service was fast and professional. Tiny building in a weird spot but absolutely worth it, I will be back.

Last night I called in an order and the first time I called they hung up on me. I called back and put in my order, I was told 20 minutes until it was ready. I arrived 20 minutes later and it took me 10 minutes before anyone acknowledged I was there. I was told it wasn’t ready yet, 20 minutes later I asked again and was told it wasn’t ready and that they needed 20 more minutes. There wasn’t really any apology or acknowledgement of how this was a normal. An hour after I put in my phone order I walked away with my food. I got home only to discover that they had given me noodles instead of rice and that all of our food was way too spicy to enjoy (we ordered medium.) I have a very high spice tolerance and usually can handle spicy food… but this just didn’t even taste good it was so overwhelming of all other flavors. Husband doesn’t have a high spice tolerance but can usually handle a medium, poor guy was red faced and sweating through his whole meal that he hardly enjoyed. Honestly felt like a huge waste of both our time and money… and I felt disrespected most of the time I was in the restaurant. Someone sat down after I had been there for 35 minutes and they had their food within 10 minutes… the whole thing was just negative from beginning to end. Maybe it was just a fluke night… idk. I’m going to call about a refund and will update this review accordingly.

Loveeee the food... such generous amount!! Drunken noodle is sooo good, highly recommended.

Yelp
Panang is good and authentic (spice level 3)! Excellent friendly service. Plan on returning

Yelp
Hard pass. I ordered two items to go. The dressing in the papaya salad was off. It needs more fish sauce, lime and seasonings. It was not tasteful. On top of it, the shrimp (two whole ones) had a very strange taste to them. I ate 1/3 of the salad. Couldn't get past the strange dressing. The spring rolls are decent but the peanut sauce was overly sweet. I ate 4 of the 8 pieces. I went to sleep hungry. Don't recommend and will not return

Yelp
Yeah..... this place is it!!!! Called literally 8 min before they closed and they took my take out order - 10/10 for service. It was ready in 10 min, picked it up and brought it home after a night on the town. The food absolutely SLAPPED like... im impressed. Asked for Thai spicy on my drunken noodles, I'm fanning my mouth as we speak, but that's what I wanted, I LOVE heat and it's nice to actually get heat. The pad Thai, also amaze. Dishes had an insane amount of flavor and complexity. Stoked. Thank you so much!!!!

Yelp
Felt Like Thai while visiting the area. Place is small and a little divey. Service and food were authentic and great. By number of take out bags we watched being picked up I would say locals love this place too. Our meal were well prepared and delivered to us fast. Spice levels were right on. I had the 4 and it was hit. Can't imagine the level 5. Great food! Recommend highly.

Yelp
Great service, fast and friendly, green curry was awesome, and they have the little hot Thai red chilis that spice it up!! Wifey enjoyed her Thai fried rice, we will be back

Stephanie D.

Yelp
Decent Thai food, the best in Durango but not the best over all. Some dishes are overly sweet which is weird to me. Also the Chang Thai iced tea ja DISGUSTING. Dear god, it's literally sugar water with purple coloring. My bf said it tastes like a virgin purple fucker from the roadhouse Ps I chuckle at the comments calling it authentic . I backpacked the entirety of Thailand for over a month. This food is not authentic or nearly as good as other Thai places.

Yelp
Let me start by saying I'm writing this review in place of my husband who got off a 12 hour shift last night as an out-of-state wildland firefighter and needed a place to grab a bite to eat. He was tired and hungry and looking for a good meal. Unfortunately, he didn't find it here. He was greeted with a curt hello from a woman who was out front but quickly retreated to the kitchen where she just ignored him. As did the server who was in the dining area. Did not even acknowledge his presence. According to my husband they were not busy. It was later in the evening and his guess was they weren't interested in serving any more customers. What a sad excuse of a business if your employees can't honor the hours that you're open and provide courteous service to their patrons. He doesn't have time to write these reviews but I thought it was worth writing. You get one shot at making a great impression and this place failed at the most basic level. Shameful.

Yelp
The open sign wasn't turned on , opened the door and they were open! It's a cute mom and pa shop. Nothing fancy , however the duck soup was delicious and the drunken noodles! Will be back

Yelp
Stopped by after enjoying the Hot Springs, this little Thai spot was absolutely perfect for a cold winter night. We stopped by about an hour before they closed and it wasn't super busy. The menu had a ton of different offerings and everything we ordered was absolutely fantastic. All of the different dishes were so good I would totally come again. The flavor and each was different but really tasty. Service was fast and friendly.

Yelp
the food was bussin. i had a large wonton and it was really good. i will never hate thai food and this place is an example why.

Dennie C.

Yelp
Food is always amazing, and always accommodating for my children's needs of not so much spice

Tara B.

Yelp
First (and only positive): Food is absolutely great with large portions! The service is so odd today: one guy waiting tables, bussing tables, and handing out waters (no other beverages being served). A woman joined him, and that's when the wheels began to really fall off. My husband and I were served before the rest of our party, and the people who arrived 30-45 minutes after us were served before my children! Great food for sure, but they really need to fix the dining in experience. Do yourself a favor and go elsewhere for awhile.
google avatar

Sylvia T.

Yelp
Pricing on menu odd, every meal must have addons for additional price to become a full entree. Paid $22.00+ dollars for ginger fried rice with beef. Beef looked & tasted like is was pre frozen thin sliced unknown meat then steamed with NO seasoning. The vegies were only fancy sliced carrot, lots of long thin celery, 4 large square pieces of napa cabbage, 3 slices common button mushroom. NOT WORTH THE MONEY!

Yelp
This Thai restaurant has really good reviews so we decided to try it on our trip to Durango. It was about 2:00 pm and we were the only customers in the place. We both ordered the Gingery Chicken lunch meal. The service was good and the food came out fast. Unfortunately it was not hot and very salty. We had to find someone to ask for it to be heated up. The meal was real and it was good but not "real good." The building is quite beat up with cardboard and tape in one of the windows facing the street. It also had a hint of men's bathroom scent.

Pamela A.

Yelp
Great tasting food. Small place but nice for small sit down and take out both. Portions are huge. 2 people can easily share dinner entree. Be careful with spice level. Their medium is equal to hot of other places. Full of flavor and great service !
google avatar

Joshua P.

Yelp
Great food in a nice hole in the wall spot. Restaurant and restroom were clean and well lit. Spice levels were also "just right" based on my preference and order.
google avatar

Mindy M.

Yelp
We have been eating here for many years and have alway loved the food... but in the last sox months something has changed. The curry still has a great flavor but it's watery/thin and they took the eggplant out of the green curry (bummed because I loved it!) and replaced it with lots of celery. I can't speak to the other dishes but will say that overall the food is authentic and the beat Thai in Durango... just wish they would make the curry so it's not so soupy/watery!!!
google avatar

Austin L.

Yelp
Very authentic, clean & good menu. There's a lot of vegan options if needed, as well as GF. We got medium spice & it had a lot kick (& we like it spicy!).
google avatar

Stephen G.

Yelp
Food is high quality and portions are large. Spice was perfect for me who likes mild to medium, and for my wife who likes Thai spicy.

Eric K.

Yelp
Fantastic and authentic Thai curries and the Pad Thai was amazing. Very large portions. The Thai Ice tea was delicious! We loved it - although the exterior is unassuming, the food makes it so worthwhile.

Sara L.

Yelp
Great food, large portions, excellent service. Everyone was friendly and clearly working hard to serve a full restaurant.

Yelp
After a long drive to Durango, we stopped in here for dinner. The place is small and a bit dingy but we stayed because everyone was quiet hungry. We waited awhile to be acknowledged by host/server - basically anyone that works there. From our understanding, there was only 1 server and no host to seat people. Long story short, the experience was undesirable but the food was surprisingly good. We ordered pad Thai, drunken noodle, basil fried rice, Tom yum soup, and spring rolls. Make sure you request mild spice level if you cannot handle heat - medium spicy was too spicy for me even though I can typically handle heat!
google avatar

Aubrey Z.

Yelp
The food here was AMAZING. I usually am a Panang Curry girl but went for some Pad Thai and WOW! Haven't had Pad Thai I can remark with good conscious in a while. They're a little understaffed, but we hardly noticed. The Thai tea is also phenomenal. It was my friends first time having it and she ordered TWO because she loved it so much! Such a neat hole in the wall, we highly recommend. Plus, there's board games and the TV playing some funny videos on it. Overall, the vibes were great and the food even better!

Taylor M.

Yelp
Was in town for a wedding. Stopped by at 8pm on Sunday for take out. Everything was delicious. Best Thai food I have had in a long time (and I live in Los Angeles). My dad loved the pad Thai. Everything was really fresh and flavorful. Thank you!

D D.

Yelp
Food was ok. But lacking value. Ordered a large bowl of soup that had delicious broth with some veggies in it but just a few pieces of protein. $19. Duck rice was ok, but not filling and cost $19. We spent over $70, and were hungry an hour later.

Yelp
This place has the BEST most Incredible Thai food in Durango The ambiance is clean and relaxed. The service is Fantastically friendly and our Delicious food arrived shortly after we ordered. This is now our favorite Thai restaurant in town. Thank You so much to everyone at Chang Thai- We'll be seeing you often
google avatar

Shera J.

Yelp
Love this food! Used to be pretty difficult to place an order or to get food on time, but new owners make it super easy to order, and even offer delivery!

ROBYN C.

Yelp
Ate here with junior as we continue our series of trying to eat at all restaurants in Durango. Ordered the veggie spring rolls, the green curry with chicken and the Pad See Ew. The spring rolls were fresh and delicious and served with a warm peanut sauce topped with actual crushed peanuts! We ordered the Pad See Ew medium spice. I'd say it wasn't spicy at all but was flavorful and I loved the bits of fried egg throughout. The green curry was definitely the star. I give this dish an A +. There was plenty for the 2 of us & perfectly seasoned. I would absolutely go back for this dish. I also loved the little condiment rack they give you with different seasonings to add to your dishes. The service was spot on. The only things that kept it from getting 5 stars is there really was no spice to anything. Flavor, yes but no spice. Also to note, they warn you when you walk in that they do a heavy business in take out and that if you don't have a reservation you may wait a long time for your food.

A Y.

Yelp
Service and people were very friendly. Average wait for to go order. Was driving through Durango and wanted Thai food and figured 4.4 on yelp should be a good choice.... We ordered pad Thai and Thai fried rice- classics but both were only mediocre.
google avatar

Matt B.

Yelp
I previously raved about this place and gave it 5 stars. It was one of my favorite restaurants in Durango. I believe that it has changed hands and the menu is different. Got the duck red curry and it had no bamboo shoots(on the menu)(love them) and they must have changed the curry paste and the recipe . I do not like it anymore. Spent a lot of money here over the years. My curry did not taste well and it was missing bamboo shoots that were supposed to be there. Such a shame..Hope they adjust..

Matthew B.

Yelp
The food was amazing. Family loved it. When we come back to Durango, this will be a must stop.
google avatar

Cara M.

Yelp
Best Thai in town. I feel lucky when I catch them open. The green curry feels like a hug!

Scout M.

Yelp
We used to really love the food from Chang Thai, and ordered it almost weekly. The restaurant has changed hands. The menu has changed, and also the recipes for the "standard" dishes have changed. We've tried it a couple of times now but probably won't go back. The food is mediocre at best and definitely not what it was before.
google avatar

Suzanne M.

Yelp
I was so impressed with their crabmeat fried rice, yummy! Lots of crab and a large order to boot. The owner is so sweet(and her husband), and she cooks all of her orders fresh. Sometimes there's a bit of a wait, but SO worth it. I like to order to go.
google avatar

Ronaelle P.

Yelp
Best Thai in Southern Colorado! They recently moved to a new location, which from the outside doesn't look like much, but the inside is neat, cozy and comfortable with a small bar. I enjoyed a hurricane cocktail while waiting to pickup my carry out order. My order was done early, but keep in mind you have to order carry out during certain time slots so their kitchen isn't overwhelmed. Order early, to get your preferred time to eat. The green curry is amazingly delicious as are their noodle dishes. I highly recommend this restaurant for world-class Thai. You won't be disappointed and will be going back for more!!
google avatar

Barton D.

Yelp
Love this place! Food is exceptional and authentic. Front of the house and back of the house are such awesome people. Crab fried rice is off the charts (I don't even care for rice), garlic chicken stir-fry is SO good, fish cakes, their specials (Avocado Curry, Hung Lay, etc) are so, so good. We try to eat here once a week and have never been disappointed with a single dish - actually, a better way to say it is we've loved every dish! If you want to do dine-in or takeout for dinner you need to order in advance online. It's very simple. If the craving for great Thai hits you early, no reason not to order a day early as they get so busy so quick. We usually add eggplant to one of the dishes we get because it's straight up delicious. Enjoy!
google avatar

Kylee C.

Yelp
Very good restaurant!! My friends and I came during our lunch break, and we found that this was one of the best restaurants we've been too. They were unable to split the check at the end, but overall was an amazing dining experience. I would definitely come back when I had more time to sit and enjoy the food

Alex T.

Yelp
Everything here is so so so good. The wonderful folks who run this are very friendly and service is fast and attentive!! The Wonton Soup has cured all of my colds this winter, lots of love to you Chang Thai

Yelp
This was the best Thai food I've ever eaten. Truly amazing. Continue reading for my experience... I stood at the door waiting to be seated for about 8 minutes, and no one saw me. The bartender (manager?) was casually talking to a customer that he knew who came to pick up a Togo order. He didn't notice me either. I went to the food window area to let them know I didn't think anyone had seen me. I was very kind about it, no biggie...I'm short. Maybe they couldn't see me because of that...I ordered my food and a water once I was seated. The waitress was kind and doing the job of 4 people like a rock-star, but she was totally swamped. 10 minutes went by, no water...I had skied all day and was thirsty. So, I went over to the self-serve drink station, got a cup and ice water. It looked like a normal self-serve station. The bartender (manager?) that had been there when I was waiting at the door was no where to be seen. So, I figured this was what I needed to do to get water. Later, when I got up to get a refill the bartender (manager?) was racing by me and then I was told I shouldn't have gotten my own water. I told him I ordered a water but waited about 10 minutes but never got a water. He continued to chastise me for getting water and said it was "a health hazard" for me to get my own water (from the self-serve station which has to-go cups, straws, lids, etc. like any other restaurant). There was no sign that said not to get your own. I couldn't believe that I was in trouble for getting water when I had no help from anyone else. I am a small business owner myself, so I understand how important good reviews are. However, chastising a customer for getting water when none was delivered, and then not even offering to get a real glass and pitcher like everyone else had, is not good customer service. Best Thai food I've ever had, but I left feeling belittled and shamed. I am sure there is a TON going on behind the scenes that is incredibly stressful (I overheard the bartender (manager?) casually talking to a customer and mentioning how workers were calling in sick). I am sure the bartender (manger) was extremely stressed. As I was about to leave, the bartender (manager?) did ask me if I was local and what brought me to Durango. He was kind and said safe travels. So, I'm sure I'm the moment he was super stressed. I totally get it...I just left feeling belittled and negative about my experience. But the food was the best!

Wai A.

Yelp
I picked up and decided to give this place a try. I was pleasantly surprised and happy with how flavorful the food was. I went with green curry and pork with jasmine rice with a medium heat. Im from NM and like hatch chile foods so Im good with the heat. It was perfect heat and it wasnt over powering. I also got an order of the spring rolls and that was super delish too! Im glad I took a chance to try it out and will definitely come back in the future. I would say 4.5/5. 0.5 off mainly because the curry broth could of been a little better. It seemed a little watery. Also food was ready for pick up in less than 15min after placing an order!

Al M.

Yelp
Service: Friendly but slow. Slow. Couldn't be slower if they tried. Ambiance: Like a dive bar. Still waiting on the apps and it's been well over 30 minutes. THEY CARE MORE ABOUT THE TAKEOUT ORDERS THAN THE SEATED CUSTOMERS, WITHOUT A DOUBT THOSE ARE PRIORITY. Not once has anyone asked if we needed another drink or a refill. THEY SHOULD BE A BYOB JOINT. People cancelling order left and right. What's going on here? Wow, and know they say they can't give us an ETA for an order from an hour ago. We outtie. Food: We never got any.

Jeff W.

Yelp
Terrible business!! Had a reservation for 7:30 for 7 people. Arrived at 7:20. Checked in and was told just a few minutes but the kitchen was backed up and it could be up to an hour for our food after ordering and that was fine. Waitress came to the lobby at 7:42 and said sorry we won't be able to serve you tonight. Maye you have good Thai food or maybe not but, this local will never be back or refer anyone. Your take out orders should NEVER o ertake your in house business. Take out.... food only. No drinks, no chance to up sell, no tips (way to keep staff. Bad business. Learn business before you start and piss off good customers!!!
google avatar

Cole D.

Yelp
Best Thai food I've ever had. If they don't answer the phone for your questions just send a text.
google avatar

Van W.

Yelp
Terrible customer service. Mediocre, basic Thai. I'd rather eat Taco Bell. The manager/ owner also seems like he's got a stick up his you know what.

Dezbah T.

Yelp
I got the Pho and it was mid af. Was not expecting cubed meat. I also didn't receive any toppings for my Pho like cilantro, lime, or basil leaves. The broth was not hitting. Honestly not worth the price.

Jeff C.

Yelp
New ownership?, expected food quality like the Chang Thai of old, not the case last night!
google avatar

Suzanne C.

Yelp
For a food truck, I must admit that I was a bit skeptical, and proven wrong. The noodles are delicious and cooked perfectly. Everything we had was delicious. Be prepared, however, they are a little bit spicier than probably what you're used to. Definitely a place where we would return.
google avatar

Rushini R.

Yelp
Every year, we try a new Thai place at wherever we are visiting on our annual family winter trip. This time in Durango we tried Chang Thai. Now we've had A LOT of different Thai food places and I consider myself to be a bit picky, but when I say this place was really really good from the food to the service. Our waitress was super friendly and the basil fried rice was incredible. Also get the green curry it was sooo good!! Come here if you live in Durango or you're passing through!
google avatar

Corinne S.

Yelp
No complaints here! Takeout order was ready promptly and the employees were friendly at pickup. I got the chicken pad Thai and the chicken potstickers as well as a Thai bubble tea. Everything was delicious and fresh. Definitely the go-to spot for Thai in Durango!
