The Best Chicken Wings In San Francisco, Ranked - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Chang’s Kitchen Restaurant is a worthy backup when you get quoted an incomprehensible wait at San Tung across the street. They also have dry-fried wings in a sauce thick enough to lay a brick wall—along with a photo in the window proclaiming them “San Francisco’s BEST” wings (at the very least, they’re a strong competitor to San Tung). Slightly spicy and a bit on the sweet side, these are all-around excellent." - lani conway, julia chen 1, patrick wong

Go to Chang’s Kitchen Restaurant for the dry-fried wings - Review - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Chang’s Kitchen Restaurant is right across the street from San Tung and their legendary wings. But in the window of this Sunset Chinese restaurant is a sign proudly proclaiming that their dry-fried wings are “San Francisco’s BEST.” While we have yet to find any that topple San Tung’s spot on the throne, they’re undoubtedly excellent, and you should absolutely order them. Also pay attention to the other Chinese dishes, like salt and pepper pork, housemade scallion pancakes, and mounds of green beans with pork. If you’re quoted an incomprehensible wait time at San Tung, this is your best backup plan. And even if you're not, it’s always easy to get a table, no matter the size of your group, and you’ll leave satisfied. Food Rundown Dry-Fried Chicken Wings You’re coming here, you’re getting the wings (and in case you forget, just look at the many photos of them plastered on the walls). They’re slightly spicy and a bit on the sweet side, but all around delicious. PlayMute video credit: Julia Chen Green Onion Pancakes Starting things off with these housemade pancakes is the move. They’re not overly greasy and maintain an audible crunch around the edges. photo credit: Julia Chen Shanghai Styled Rice Cake Served simply with cabbage, pork, and the occasional carrot, this is a great dish to round things out. PlayMute video credit: Julia Chen Shanghai Steamed Dumplings These are fine, but missing any identifiable burst of soup. We’d skip these and focus on the bigger entrees. photo credit: Julia Chen" - Julia Chen

I was so ecstatic and elated to try this fantastic restaurant after hearing about their grand re-opening!! I love how spacious and welcoming the atmosphere feel and how robust and plentiful the menu options are. We ordered a delicious array of dishes from soup to fried rice to veggie and protein entrees! The food came out so quickly, and I was absolutely touched by the personable service and how exuberant Jenny is. I loved how savory and filling everything was without feeling excessive or bloated by the end of the meal. Portions are super generous and perfect for a delightful time with loved ones! I am already extremely eager to be back and to try more menu items and to introduce more people to this spectacular restaurant :)) Thank you so much Jenny for treating us with the most glowing hospitality and culinary experience! I'll be back soon ❤️

Google
Loved eating at Chang’s Kitchen! They just renovated and everything inside looks really nice and clean. I enjoyed the wings, salty fish chow fan, and curry noodles. Highly recommend! This is a family owned restaurant and you can see how hard working all the staff are. Service is excellent and I would come here to eat again with my friends :)

Google
Chang’s Kitchen is a hidden gem in San Francisco! Delicious food at an insane value — I highly recommend bringing some friends and splitting the family style combos, which comes out to about $20 per person for an ENORMOUS amount of food. We got the Cantonese Dinner which had classic fried rice and sweet and sour pork, along with honey walnut shrimp (sooooo good), spring rolls, soup, and more! The fried chicken wings were perfectly crispy too. And the workers are very kind ☺️ Will definitely be back!

Google
I found this place on Yelp 6 years ago. It’s my go to when I’m in San Francisco. They give big portions, a bit pricey $45 for 3 black “tupperware” plates but it’s good to feed 4+. I love the spicy beef chow mein, I think I used to get the Mongolian beef that one was super spicy, but I liked it. Pictures are the shrimp fried rice, spicy beef chow mein.

Google
Nice to see Chang's reopen after the fire a year+ ago. Food is solid and the prices reasonable. Food came out quickly and very hot. Service is friendly and prompt. Very clean restaurant as well. Definitely recommend for a casual Chinese meal. Chicken wings and the spinach were very good.

Google
Glad to have this neighborhood staple reopened. Solid Cantonese food at no frills affordable prices. Dry Fried wings - Crunchy exterior, flavorful with balanced levels of sweet, spicy, and savory. Beef Stew Claypot - Tasty. The Beef stew was on the chewy side. But the flavor profile was on point. Salt & Pepper Spareribs - Nice pieces that are not overly fatty cuts. Would definitely get this again.

Google
Chang’s Kitchen is delicious, cheaper, and FASTER than Sam Tung. As a Chinese person, I thought that their food was super authentic and reminds me of home and comfort— especially my top favorite Cantonese dishes. They nailed my favorite dish of the tomato beef pan-fried noodles. Portions are huge, prices are super comparable (almost all under $15 which you can’t find these days for a huge dish). Dishes come out hot, fresh, and FAST.

Google
We opened a whole spread from the menu and we were far from disappointed. The orange chicken we voted the best orange chicken we have ever had. Each dish though from the salmon, halibut, Chinese broccoli, fried rice, their fried chicken, honey chicken etc was incredibly flavored. Staff was attentive, welcoming and attentive, definitely will be going back. (Even though tofu dish was great) ah yum

Yelp
Came here on a Thursday night to eat dinner with my friends. It was a lovely homey ambiance where we could just chat away along with good food. Big portions for the dishes and my favorite was the salty fish fried rice The salty fish really shines through! The tea also compliments it really well. Service was fast and attentive. I loved how there were reoccurring customers who were familiar with the owners. It was lovely to see.

Yelp
Was craving Cantonese food, Chang's had good reviews so ordered takeout to give it a try. Overall, it's a 2-3 and would not order again. Dry fried chicken - we prefer San Tung's. Chang's is not as crispy (their signature) and more meaty. Salty fish fried rice - this was the best of the order. Factually, they have big chunks of chicken and salty fish if you like that. Sautéed string beans - we didn't like all the extras (white onion, carrot, jalapeño). The classic is better (green beans with minced pork and preserved vegetables). Seafood pan fried noodles - super salty sauce. At least one shrimp was old (the ones that fall apart) and one fish was old (funky taste). Noodles themselves are OK.

Yelp
Chang's Kitchen just recently opened again after 18 months of closure and I'm happy they did because the food did not disappoint. I went in to inquire about menus for large a group order and the older gentleman inside was very kind and helpful. My group was able to place a big order over the phone for pick-up. Everything was labeled neatly and packaged well with no mistakes. I ordered the Dry Fried Chicken Wings on the lunch menu and they were so good. They had a really delicious sweet and spicy sauce on them. They might even be better than some others around the neighborhood. Highly recommend checking them out for a lunch or dinner- great service and reasonable pricing.

Yelp
TLDR - food is superb, no wait (?!), great service and price. My friends and I are visiting from LA and were craving Asian food during our trip. There was a huge line for the other place across the street where we originally wanted to go to but they were super rude when we called for a question. Luckily we saw Chang's kitchen across the street with no line - did a quick vet on Yelp and decided to give it a try. The food is pretty darn great, I'm really surprised there weren't more people. The roasted duck was flavorful and tender, the dry fried wings were 10/10, & just overall a great experience and probably my favorite meal during this trip. Price was not bad at all and most importantly the service is friendly/polite (which should be bare minimum imo). Highly recommend and will look forward to coming back here during our future trips! :)

Yelp
So glad to see Chang's Kitchen reopen following their 1.5 year closure due to fire damage. The owner is very friendly and made a point to check on guests to ensure everything was ok and water cups were full. The food is all very good. Hot and sour soup was brought before we placed our order - good on a cold day. Had to order the dry fried chicken wings again - still yummy. This time we also ordered the salt and pepper fish (arrived hot and crispy - another good one) and green beans (hubs noted these were probably his fave green beans).

Yelp
We came to Chang's after hearing it reopened and saw the line for San Tung was too long. We tried the dry fried chicken wings as well as the veggie chow mein. I thought it was decent Chinese food! I think it was reasonably priced and the service was nice as well. If you're wanting something quick and reasonably priced, def check out Chang's kitchen!

Yelp
This place changed owners and is having a grand re opening. American styled Chinese food. Very good prices! Not bad not amazing. Flavors are the same across each oyster or soy sauce dish. Chicken chow mein was solid tasty 8-9/10. Wonton noodle soup was interesting. Maybe 5 wontons with pork inside no significant taste at all. Noodles probably a bit overcooked but the broth was great! There were also a generous amount of pork strips cooked into the broth very interesting not bad. Lots of veggies- carrots nappa cabbage not bad. Overall maybe 6.6/10 for the wonton soup. Service was great.

Yelp
My friends and I decided to try this place for dinner and we were not disappointed. The food here was so good. We ordered the roasted duck, dry fried chicken wings, beef chow fun, eggplant with garlic sauce, and string beans. Everything was so flavorful but still balanced. I really enjoyed the roasted duck the most. It is so worth it price wise as well. The staff here were so friendly and helpful. They had a grand reopening and the restaurant was very clean. I would love to come back here again when I'm back in the city

Yelp
Was parked in front and noticed Chang's Kitchen isn't boarded up anymore. I was wondering if they went out of business, I asked the owner and they said there was a fire upstairs that prompted a closure over a year. The restaurant reopened on 4/1/2025 and the owner thanked me for continuing to support them. I ordered the Dry Fried Chicken Wings, which is similar to San Tung's across the street. The texture was very crispy and it was not too sweet. I ordered takeout and my order was quickly ready, but then again they weren't busy on a weekday. Overall good place for wings.

Yelp
Chang's have re-opened after the fire. Its as I remembered: my steamed minced pork, 4 season beans; everything. Tasty dishes in a comfortable friendly neighborhood place run by hard working folks.

Yelp
Very good wings. San tung tier even. I will be back. I also liked the green beans and chow fun.

Yelp
This place is awesome. Sometimes I want some dry fried wings for lunch, but don't want an entire shareable portion. They have a great lunch special deal. This is peak San Francisco dry fried wings. Can't get them like this anywhere else. The server was very kind and the place was very nicely renovated while still feeling homey. I will be back!

Yelp
We visited today, Friday June 6, 2025. We ordered the Fish in Chili Oil Crispy Hong Kong Noodles Chicken Wings (includes more, but we ended up eating some prior to photo) Everything was very good. I will note that the fish was not as spicy as it looks. Good balance of fish, soft tofu, and bean sprout. Note I recommend eating with white rice to balance the flavors. For the crispy noodles, includes beef, fish, and shrimp. Very good also. I really enjoyed the chicken wings, tangy with sweetness. The order, I think has about 10 wings. Food arrived quickly. I really like this place, and will update. See photos Great service.

Kacie C.

Yelp
The food and service were amazing. I got their spicy dry fried chicken wings, wontons in spicy sauce, chicken fried rice, Mongolian three combo and sautéed green beans. Everything was delicious. I was nervous I would feel heavy after eating it all, but I felt amazing afterwards. I was happily surprised that I found this gem. The restaurant was clean and the waitresses were kind and helpful. 10/10

Yelp
A friend said they've recently reopened and that they were a long time regular for years. I've never been here before the reopening, so I decided to give it a try. The place is clean and bright which I appreciate a ton. Aside from the yummy eats, Jenny, the owner is super nice and accommodating. The Salt-and-pepper halibut tastes great. Unlike other Chinese restaurants that use swai fish for this dish, Chang's kitchen used real halibut. Vegi's and tofu dishes are cooked perfectly. I especially liked the steamed pork patty. I was told that the reason why the taste and texture was so good was because the don't use regular port, but high quality pork for black-haired swine. It's a great place for lunch and dinner if you're in the mood for authentic Cantonese cuisine. The sweet 'n spicy dried-fried chicken wings are the best!

kassidy m.

Yelp
Honestly so good. Chicken chow mein, wonton soup, and general tso chicken was amazing. Most people look over this place because San-tung is across the street but San-tung is overhyped in my opinion. Definitely recommend checking this place out.

Yelp
They are back!!! Open again and may even be better than before if that's possible! If you are in the inner sunset area of San Francisco do yourself a favor and eat here. Inexpensive compared to SF and the even the area, top quality food and service. Wings are as good as the guys across the street. 5 stars every time
google avatar

David Y.

Yelp
People sleeping on this restaurant. This place brings back old school SF vibes. When restaurants like these were common. Good food, reasonable prices and large portions, being served by nice ladies that remind you of your aunties. And it's clean! All the food we ordered tasted great. We had the combination tofu clay pot. Ingredients tasted fresh and bountiful. Deep fried sole was amazing in taste, size and value for $20. They should highlight fried sole dish instead of the chicken wings they try to compete with Sang Từng across the street. Also the "Asian Fusion" is confusing. It's a Chinese restaurant with few creative specialties. Wishing they were more busy as I think they are so deserving of it!
google avatar

KC S.

Yelp
Food: solid Chinese food, very flavorful, lots of sauce. they have all the basics plus some more. The sautéed fish fillet with basil was my favorite. Service: super nice owners, really attentive and fast. Ambiance: clean, basic pleasant decor. Price: Very reasonable for SF - $65 before tip for brown rice, fish, green beans, eggplant and beef & broccoli. Portions were generous and our party of 3 were full and had plenty of leftovers. Oh and the free hot & sour soups were a nice touch!

Jeff W.

Yelp
Personally, the wings were not my cup of tea, but changs is good for most everything else. We had Mongolian beef, salt & pepper pork chops, beef chow fen, basil lamb, & eggplant and all of it was great. Chang's has the best Chinese vegetables in the neighborhood, especially spicy string beans. Can't wait to eat there again.
google avatar

Yelp
They're back and better than ever! So glad they reopened. Service was very nice and fast, and the food was great. If you're looking for a delicious bite with pretty large portions (shout out to the lunch special), this place is great. My wife and I got the Kung Pao Chicken, Mongolian Three Combo and the dry fried chicken wings (very crunchy), all were bangers. Highly recommend, especially if you're in a long wait at the other Chinese restaurant across the street...

Mango B.

Yelp
Dry fried chicken got thick and CRISPY skin, yet still juicy inside. the sauce on it is really nice. The sautéed string beans are really good, can taste enough of the actual green beans without the sauce being overpowering. The Honey Walnut Shrimp is very good. The restaurant is spacious, good lighting and clean. The staff are so kind. I will definitely be eating here again!

Sandi V.

Yelp
Best dry-fried chicken wings and green beans in the city. BETTER THAN SAN TUNG'S!!! Everything is good here including the service and the New York cheesecake for dessert. Nice, newly remodeled building, clean inside with lots of light. You can't go wrong here.

Yelp
Had a very lovely meal here last night! The owner and staff were incredibly warm and friendly, checking in on us thought the night. And the food was great, the dry friend chicken was definitely the highlight along with the Singaporean style noodles. Will definitely be back.

Phoebe S.

Yelp
I LOVE Chang's! I missed it so much when they were closed. The fried rice, spicy mongolian beef chow mein and dry wings are superb. The service is insanely friendly. I always advocate for people to go here instead of San Tung.
google avatar

Yelp
First time trying this place out. Got the fried rice w salty fish, broccoli w chicken, salt and pepper shrimp, ma po tofu, beef w fried tofu, and lemon grass chicken green beans. Everything was excellent and only about $100!! Will definitely make this part of our rotation.
google avatar

Yelp
Chang's is back! Classic Chinese restaurant in America with all your favorites on the menu, and then some. Salt & pepper tofu and S&P chicken are great choices. I also often get honey walnut prawns and veggie fried rice. They have a decent selection of dimsum too. Love coming here, been enjoying their food and vibe for years, it's definitely great comfort food and the servers have always been so nice.

Yelp
I ate at Chang's Kitchen for the first time in September and instantly became a fan. Solid Chinese food, with shorter wait times and better value compared to that more-famous Chinese restaurant right across the street. FOOD // + Dry-Fried Chicken Wings: a lot of reviews have compared Chang's dry-fried chicken wings to San Tung's (the more famous one, but not necessarily worth that long wait); my verdict is that Chang's dry-fried chicken wings are better than San Tung's. The wings are sizeable and delightfully sweet-salty-spicy (but not too spicy, which is perfect for my weak spice tolerance). + Yang Zhou Fried Rice (Yeung Chow Fried Rice): fragrant and delicious. We cleaned every grain of rice off the plate + Sauteed String Beans: the veggies we needed! + Salt and Pepper Halibut: crispy outside, flaky moist fish inside + Singapore Style Rice Noodle: this was the only dish I'd pass on next time, mostly because the char siu pork was pretty tough to chew. Flavor was just okay. + Ginger Honey Tea: great if you're looking for a hot drink to warm up your whole soul. But to be frank, it tasted exactly like the ginger honey crystals I got at the Chinese supermarket; I would just make my own at home next time. SERVICE & AMBIANCE // Service was fast and friendly. Our waitress kindly put up with me attempting to order in Chinese, haha. There are both smaller tables and a few larger lazy Susan tables for larger parties. I saw quite a few people ordering take-out while we were dining in. Overall really good value and tasty food. NOTE: Chang's is currently closed for the rest of 2023 due to an unfortunate nearby fire that damaged Chang's as well. I'll be sure to come back to support their reopening next year!
google avatar

Mona Y.

Yelp
So happy to see that Chang's kitchen has reopened. Their dry fried chicken wings are absolutely the best- a little bit of spicy, sweet, crunchy. Love them. IMHO, better than San Tungs.
google avatar

Johnny F T.

Yelp
I came in for take out. The staff was very friendly. The food came out quick and in a good quantity. I would recommend this place to anyone. It just re-opened and they are better than ever.

joanne r.

Yelp
I just wanted to let everyone know that Chang's Kitchen is back open after being closed for over a year! The food is still absolutely delicious, with generous portions, just like before. I was happy to see the same friendly staff as well. I think you'll all be just as excited as I was--definitely worth a visit!
google avatar

Kevin C.

Yelp
So glad they are back after an 18 month closure due to the fire in the apartment above the restaurant. Are there 2 weeks ago. Same great taste from back in 2023.
google avatar

Wubai Q.

Yelp
My favorite restaurant is finally reopened. Can't wait to take my family and friends there. The food is great and the service is wonderful.
google avatar

Stephanie N.

Yelp
I tried this place for the first time today since I didn't have much time for lunch and San tung was really busy. My first impression was that the staff was so sweet and welcoming. This place definitely gives me Cantonese vibes with everyone speaking the language and having the photos of food posted on the walls (maybe that's why I felt the food tasted very homey). Eating here made me feel like I was eating my grandpa's cooking again. Serving to price ratio is also really good, especially during lunch. I'll definitely be back!
google avatar

Gel C.

Yelp
Chang's Kitchen is back! Food portions are great and the friendliest service. Plenty of tables for big parties. Cant wait to take the fam here again!

Sherman L.

Yelp
Chang's Kitchen is one of my favorite Chinese restaurants in the Sunset, so glad they finally reopened. The restaurant is always clean and comfortable to be in, and their menu offers an extensive selection of non-meat dishes. Prices are reasonable with generous portions. And the food and service is always top notch.

Marc B.

Yelp
Don't wait in line at San Tung across the street. Changs Kitchen just reopened after having to close after a fire next door to them. These folks cook great food at great prices. Their dry fried chicken wings are at least as good as San Tung. Give Changs try. Lunch specials under $13 C'mon you can't beat it. I hope Changs can make it in this tuff financial environment

Eric Z.

Yelp
One of the best looking chicken wings in the whole of SF and test better than other places within the area
google avatar

Joseph A.

Yelp
I like Chang. They put out solid dishes, at reasonable prices, quickly. Not a lot of parking but if you're picking up a fast double park is viable. My order had been the Szechuan Dinner for 2, it was very good and you can denote the spice level. it came with Sweet Sour Soup, Spicy Wontons, and 3 Entrees - Chicken Rice, Mongolian Beef & Kung Pao Chicken. For 2 persons it's a great option if you like the components of the family meals. I have been here before, and will return again.
google avatar

Roger J.

Yelp
Came to Chang's Kitchen by a friends recommendation and loved the place. The restaurant is clean and the staff were very kind and friendly. I ended up ordering the dry fried chicken wings and loved them. I will be sure to return!

Steve Y.

Yelp
Fantastic dry chicken wings! They were closed last year due to a building fire, but they're opened again with the same high quality menu.

Alex L.

Yelp
The food at Chang's Kitchen was amazing. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming.

Isa P.

Yelp
THE BEST FOOD! They have the most delicious chicken wings, friend rice, and chow mien I have ever had. I've been going here for 17 years and I can say they never disappoint. So Yummy and fresh!! :)

Elaine L.

Yelp
Happy to have them back after their closure! I ordered my "usuals" - westlake beef soup, salt & pepper tofu, the diced chicken wings, and the combo fried rice. Delivery was quick and the food was still piping hot! Welcome back!!

Terence W.

Yelp
So glad they're back! I really missed them while they were away. I've always thought that a lot of their food is on par with San Tung across the street, even if it is in a different style. The service is always super friendly, and the environment is relaxed and newly renovated!
google avatar

Ray J.

Yelp
I spent a few days in San Francisco and decided to try a new (to me) Chinese restaurant. Chang's was convenient, and featured a variety of meatless 'chicken' dishes, which are a particular favorite of mine. The vegetable chow mein was excellent, although the vegetables weren't trimmed well so I had to do it at the table; and the meatless General Tso's 'chicken' was dry and overcooked, although the sauce was very good I hope the cooks will make sure they aren't overcooking the meatless proteins, which require far less cooking than animal protein. Service was wonderful, on the plus side; and the restaurant is obviously a neighborhood favorite, so I'll give it another try the next time I'm in town

Asma S.

Yelp
I was really disappointed with the dry fried chicken. It was clearly stale--dry and tough. Worse, it had a funky smell that made it hard to even take a bite. Definitely not fresh and not something I'd recommend.
google avatar

Juanita L.

Yelp
I love to come here when I'm craving Chinese food and hot tea after a night of drinking haha. Everything isn't a hit but I still enjoy trying different dishes every visit. Portions are also generous! The folks who work here are also welcoming and friendly too. Overall, I'd say order dishes they have to cook...not something like dumplings that are frozen and only require steaming or boiling. [Orange Chicken: 2/5] I wanted to like this but the chicken was pretty dry and stringy (think beef jerky). Maybe I ordered it on an off day? The batter did remain crispy though. I also wanted it extra spicy but seems like things just aren't spicy here. The sauce wasn't too bad though and you can see the orange peels too...just a bit too much food coloring. [Honey Walnut Shrimp: 5/5] My partner loves this dish. I'm not a fan but I did take a bite just to see how it was. The batter was light and crispy, and the candied walnuts were good. [House Special Chow Mein: 5/5] A favorite because c'mon, noodles! The dish is flavorful and comes with different types of protein. I also like that the noodles aren't super greasy. They taste best when mixed with the chili oil (which I wish was spicier). [Hot & Sour Soup: 4/5] I enjoyed the soup but I wish it was hotter (temp) because I need it to burn my mouth haha. There's a good balance of hot (white pepper) and sour though and overall, this is a nice soup to enjoy on a chilly day. [Soup Dumplings: 1/5] Meh. Stay away from these. I was curious so I tried them but they're nothing special and taste like frozen manufactured dumplings. The sauce that came with it was pretty underwhelming too (just a soy sauce and red vinegar mix with no ginger). [Dry Fry Chicken Wings: 2/5] They post a sign to say these are SF's best! Annnnnnd they're not. They're crispy and juicy on the inside...but I don't like the sauce. I like a balance of sweet, savory and spicy, but there's just too much sugar. The sugar is caramelized and overall, it makes the chicken taste like candy to me. I wouldn't order these again for that reason.
