A San Francisco institution at its absolute best Chang’s Kitchen is hands down the best Chinese restaurant in San Francisco and, in my opinion, the entire Bay Area. I’ve been dining here since 1988, through multiple ownership changes, and the current ownership has truly set the bar at its highest. Owner Jenny deserves tremendous credit for preserving the soul of the restaurant while elevating standards across the board—from food quality to service. The flavors are consistently outstanding. The Hunan Basil Shrimp is phenomenal—bold, aromatic, and perfectly balanced with just the right amount of heat. The Mongolian Beef is easily the best I’ve ever had: incredibly tender, deeply flavorful, and cooked to absolute perfection. Every dish tastes fresh, authentic, and thoughtfully prepared. What truly elevates the experience, however, is the service. Loo is an exceptional waiter in every sense of the word—attentive, professional, warm, and genuinely invested in making each visit memorable. His service alone sets a standard that few restaurants can match. Lisa is also wonderful, adding to the welcoming, polished atmosphere that makes dining here such a pleasure. After decades of returning, I can confidently say Chang’s Kitchen has never been better. This is more than a restaurant—it’s a true San Francisco institution. We ate here for the first time. It was very good. The Salt& Pepper Halibut was very good. Light and large pieces of fish. The Dried Fried Chicken Wings were very good also. (They are different from across the street, so don't expect the exact same. These wings hold their own.) Service was friendly. Place was basic, but clean! I would absolutely eat here again, even if the line was short at San Tung!

Backstory: We’re here on Vacation and had just left the SF Botanical Garden and were looking on Google for food in the area. The first recommendation on Google was a place called San Tung. The food looked good and reviews were good too. We got there and to our surprise there was a LONG WAIT, with tons of people outside waiting to get seated (see photo). All of things what led us to look around and what other options we might consider. We looked directly across the street and seen Chang’s Kitchen. We walked over to see the pictures of their food in the store front’s window. The food looks delicious so we have it a try. From the moment we walked in, the staff was kind, attentive, communicative and welcoming. The food came out in a very timely manner. (See photos for everything we ordered). Every single dish met our expectations and more! Our top favorite dishes from our order was the Wings, the Honey Walnut Shrimp and their Orange Chicken. Portions: very, very generous! We had boxes, and boxes of leftovers. Price/Cost: AFFORDABLE! Everything in SF is inflated and expensive (as all tourists towns seem to be) but to our surprise, our total was $117.xx! (Again, we got SO MUCH FOOD!) We predicted nothing less than $150.xx so we were extremely surprised at the affordability. Parking: we got lucky and found paid parking in the street. We personally did not see any kind of customer-parking but that appeared to be the case for every business on that street. Our only complaint: we understand that SF has a large number of people who order their food through apps to be picked up and delivered by food delivery people on bikes, but it really rubbed us the wrong way on how many of these food-delivery people on bikes are so impatient and demanding to the staff. They all seem to walk in as if their pick-up orders took priority over the sit down customers. It just was irritating to watch and hear while we sat and enjoyed our meal. Not the restaurants fault at all, and it would be nice is there was a different location in the restaurant specifically for those kinds of pick-up orders. All and All: we are so glad we were put in a position to have to look for another option to dine-in for dinner because these hidden gems always seem to be the underdogs that are truly champion.

Came here cause it was right across San Tung (which was where we were originally planning on going but line was too long) and it was a pleasant surprise! I ordered the beef chow fun with black bean sauce and the portion was huge (lasted me around 2 more meals) Noodles were thick and chewy and also reasonable priced!

I was so ecstatic and elated to try this fantastic restaurant after hearing about their grand re-opening!! I love how spacious and welcoming the atmosphere feel and how robust and plentiful the menu options are. We ordered a delicious array of dishes from soup to fried rice to veggie and protein entrees! The food came out so quickly, and I was absolutely touched by the personable service and how exuberant Jenny is. I loved how savory and filling everything was without feeling excessive or bloated by the end of the meal. Portions are super generous and perfect for a delightful time with loved ones! I am already extremely eager to be back and to try more menu items and to introduce more people to this spectacular restaurant :)) Thank you so much Jenny for treating us with the most glowing hospitality and culinary experience! This has become my favorite Chinese restaurant in San Francisco. Their salt and pepper wings are superior to the ones across the street and the rest of the menu is fire too. Some favorites are old school SF Cantonese standards like Westlake beef soup, honey walnut prawns, and the mushrooms with egg tofu.

Loved eating at Chang’s Kitchen! They just renovated and everything inside looks really nice and clean. I enjoyed the wings, salty fish chow fan, and curry noodles. Highly recommend! This is a family owned restaurant and you can see how hard working all the staff are. Service is excellent and I would come here to eat again with my friends :)

Absolutely wonderful. Service was great, food was bomb .com. I am gluten-free and was willing to sacrifice my stomach for this food. I want to come back every single day for the rest of my life.

Everything goes well here they have the best salt and pepper halibut I have ever had. They have the best dry fried chicken wings that you can buy anywhere and the restaurant across the street has a line all the way around the corner and that's part of the problem because they aren't that good they're good, but they're not great. Changs is great and they're honest and they make fresh wonderful food and I have been a long time customer that just moved back to the city and they were closed for a couple of years because they remodeled because of a fire and now they're back full speed ahead. They're going to start offering a buy one-get one free to get nighttime business and I don't know why people are not trying them at night because they're so so wonderful. Partof it I'm sure is because SAN Tobfs across the street has people standing outside in line and so they look across the street and they see Chiangs kitchen., and they don't know why there's nobody here-that's because everybody goes over there because they see the line but it's not about the food. It's an illusion. The food here is brilliant and they have the best house made dumplings you can find and they give you a deal on them. I mean, you just can't do better than having your food here and the only other Chinese restaurant that I go to is Chef Chus in Los Altos, and when I'm here in the city, I come here and their prices are right on target- the service is wonderful-It's clean. You can tell how fresh the food is. They should be packed every night and they're going to start doing a special to get people in so that people can see how wonderful the food is. I've been a long time customer and it makes me sad that people are not giving them an opportunity to show their great skills. They have a lot of to go orders lots and lots of takeout, but now the next step is to have them have customers coming in at night. Their lunch business is fine, but their nighttime business is just not as it should be, and it should not be this way. I am very very picky and I would not frequent a restaurant that didn't give me everything I wanted and they do, believe me don't miss out on this opportunity because San Tongs is across the street. You need to try this wonderful, humble restaurant, and it's great food service. Everything is perfect and they're going to start offering buy one get one free for a month and that should get people in here properly so they could see what it's like. Don't miss out. Order the dry fried chicken wings or the salt and pepper halibut, they will give you 15% off of your bill also from now until the end of March, you can have buy one get one free entrée, and they make their own dumplings in house and after five orders, you get a free order-there's nothing better than this. I promise you. And don't forget, they have great dim sum in the daytime and great lunch specials It's been a little slow going because I thought they were closed. I didn't realize they had had a fire and remodeled the kitchen. I had no idea and one day I drove by and they were open and I was so happy Louie is the greatest weight staff in the daytime and the two women at night are just the best..

Picture this: sunny, warm Saturday in Golden Gate Park. Sunset. Dinner. Hungry. Chinese but wings craving. My friend and I ended up at Chang's not by chance, but by necessity - it's literally across the street from "the place across the street" (you know the one, the hyped-up spot). Our number was 55, and they were only at 23. No choice but to pivot, and honestly? Best decision we made that night. We ordered the Szechwan dinner package for two, and I mean HUGE. Like, we left either a huge bag of leftovers. The portions here are generous enough to actually satisfy real hunger, not just Instagram photos. But let me talk about the Mongolian beef--this was hands-down my favorite. It was tender, perfectly caramelized without being overly sweet, and the sauce had that ideal balance of savory and subtle heat. The beef chunks were substantial, not those tiny slivers you sometimes get elsewhere. I could have ordered it as a standalone dish (with rice of course) and been happy. The dry fried chicken we added was also fantastic. Not too sweet, wasn't swimming in corn syrup sauce like so many places (Ahhem across the street!), and the chicken pieces were actually huge. You can tell they care about quality ingredients and flavor balance. One thing I noticed that really stood out: the bathrooms were clean. In a casual dining spot, that's a detail that speaks volumes about how much they care about the overall experience. Speaking of experience...the restaurant was pretty empty when we walked in. Honestly, it made me a little sad at first (like, "are we the only ones who know about this place?"), but it turned out to be a blessing. We got window seats, and the service was impeccable because the staff had time to really focus on us. The ladies working there were friendly and over-the-top in the best way possible. I genuinely felt like they were aunts checking in on us, but without being overbearing. There's a warmth here that's hard to find these days. We had come from Golden Gate Park earlier that day, and we ran into some friends who had the exact same idea about San Tung. They were deterred by the wait too and ended up at Chang's as well! We met up with them later, that evening, and they agreed completely--this was a great experience across the board: food, ambiance, and service. Highly recommend this place--not just to support local business, but to support a restaurant that actually does the job of feeding your hunger amidst all the hype across the street. You won't be sorry! Will definitely go back, especially for the family dinner options!

Yo - Chang's Kitchen is where its at. We like eating here but we also get it to-go A LOT more. This is the spot where we think of Chinese, affordable, DELICIOUS/RICH, and most importantly, quantity. The fried rice is honestly whatever. I've never been a fan of Chinese fried rice. Or maybe I just don't know where to go for that. Anyways. General Tso Chicken, Mongolian Beef, Shrimp dumplings, CHOW MEIN, UGH I LOVE THE HONG KONG NOODLES. That is like my CHYNEESE fix. veggies/meat in gravy glazed on top of crunchy noodles. Service is great. Ambiance is pretty straight forward. To recap, we go here because it hits all the check boxes for us in regards to CHYNA cuisine. A very healthy amount of quantity with no sacrifice in quality; at a decent/fair price.

Enjoy the crispy chow mein ( pan fried); gravy was tasty and topping was fresh. The fish fried rice just right salty and w/ wok smell. Loved it! Love a good fried rice. Staff efficient and helpful.

I'm very happy that Chang's Kitchen was reborn after its extended closure / repair period. I had been traveling, and upon return had an empty fridge because of the San Francisco, Power Grid Failure. My dinning solution was to order a Family Dinner (Canton Dinner) for a meal and guaranteed leftovers. The package came with Chicken Wonton Soup (included large pieces of chicken), Crispy Egg Rolls, Sweet & Sour Pork, Broccoli Beef, and Pork Fried Rice. Food was so good and ready in 15 minutes. Staff were friendly, and the dinning space had numerous available tables. Parking can get tight given San Tung is across the street but a parking spot was found a block away on a side street. I can easily recommend Chang's.

It's been years since I came back so I'm giving an updated review for their place after COVID and after renovation. Staff were super nice and sweet. They have a lot of variety on the menu. I ordered a tomato beef chow mein, sweet and sour pork rib, salty fish chicken fried rice, and the popular dry fried chicken wings. I loved everything! Portions are a bit small but the taste was great. The salty fish chicken fried rice had a nice wok hay flavor with a lot of chicken. I wish it had some more salted fish chunks. The dry fried wings were juicy! Huge and lots of flavor, to be honest, better than San Tung. The tomato beef was delicious, I wish they gave a little bit more. Hopefully it's more consistent this time as I gave it 3 stars initially due to inconsistent dishes every time I ordered.

Terrible "chow mein" and G Tso chicken. And we door dashed it which allowed for no ability to send it back and ask for something better. Also asked for some plates or "to go" boxes as we are staying at a hotel and didn't have the ability to split the food up between the people eating. They said no. $45 for two sub-par dishes and terrible service.

The food, immaculate. The service, immaculate. If you want to be entertained and have a great lunch, I recommend this spot; they have good portions for a good price. And the food is delicioso, which came out fresh and hot. Don't waste your time waiting in line for San Tungs, just come here. The atmosphere was welcoming and felt like a home. Did not wait long to be taken care of. Epic!!! Everyone was so kind and gave positive vibes!

TLDR - food is superb, no wait (?!), great service and price. My friends and I are visiting from LA and were craving Asian food during our trip. There was a huge line for the other place across the street where we originally wanted to go to but they were super rude when we called for a question. Luckily we saw Chang's kitchen across the street with no line - did a quick vet on Yelp and decided to give it a try. The food is pretty darn great, I'm really surprised there weren't more people. The roasted duck was flavorful and tender, the dry fried wings were 10/10, & just overall a great experience and probably my favorite meal during this trip. Price was not bad at all and most importantly the service is friendly/polite (which should be bare minimum imo). Highly recommend and will look forward to coming back here during our future trips! :)

Surprisingly great food here at an affordable price! I've been overall disappointed by the food nearby (cost is a factor for me) so I'm happy that I found a place that tastes great and is very affordable! Tried a variety of dishes and overall they're a great takeout option. Ive liked everything I've gotten. The ambience is that of a takeout place (there's pics of the food in low lighting posted on the walls) but they do have seating and even larger circular tables for groups. Service was friendly.

So glad to see Chang's Kitchen reopen following their 1.5 year closure due to fire damage. The owner is very friendly and made a point to check on guests to ensure everything was ok and water cups were full. The food is all very good. Hot and sour soup was brought before we placed our order - good on a cold day. Had to order the dry fried chicken wings again - still yummy. This time we also ordered the salt and pepper fish (arrived hot and crispy - another good one) and green beans (hubs noted these were probably his fave green beans).

I love their hot and sour soup and the salted fish fried rice hits the spot! The chicken wings are not the same as San Tung's though I also thought capitals was just ok. Good portion size for the price for their dishes. Service is always friendly and quick! Standard no frills ambiance.

Ordered their Szechuan Family Dinner meal for 2, dried fried chicken wings and Shang Hai Soup dumplings. Items arrived came fast and hot. Food was flavorful and we loved the Hot and Sour Soup that came with the dinner. Really appreciated that everything was packaged with care to prevent spilling. Hot and sour soup was packed in its own bag. Thank you!

This place changed owners and is having a grand re opening. American styled Chinese food. Very good prices! Not bad not amazing. Flavors are the same across each oyster or soy sauce dish. Chicken chow mein was solid tasty 8-9/10. Wonton noodle soup was interesting. Maybe 5 wontons with pork inside no significant taste at all. Noodles probably a bit overcooked but the broth was great! There were also a generous amount of pork strips cooked into the broth very interesting not bad. Lots of veggies- carrots nappa cabbage not bad. Overall maybe 6.6/10 for the wonton soup. Service was great.

Came here on a Thursday night to eat dinner with my friends. It was a lovely homey ambiance where we could just chat away along with good food. Big portions for the dishes and my favorite was the salty fish fried rice The salty fish really shines through! The tea also compliments it really well. Service was fast and attentive. I loved how there were reoccurring customers who were familiar with the owners. It was lovely to see.

My friends and I decided to try this place for dinner and we were not disappointed. The food here was so good. We ordered the roasted duck, dry fried chicken wings, beef chow fun, eggplant with garlic sauce, and string beans. Everything was so flavorful but still balanced. I really enjoyed the roasted duck the most. It is so worth it price wise as well. The staff here were so friendly and helpful. They had a grand reopening and the restaurant was very clean. I would love to come back here again when I'm back in the city

Was parked in front and noticed Chang's Kitchen isn't boarded up anymore. I was wondering if they went out of business, I asked the owner and they said there was a fire upstairs that prompted a closure over a year. The restaurant reopened on 4/1/2025 and the owner thanked me for continuing to support them. I ordered the Dry Fried Chicken Wings, which is similar to San Tung's across the street. The texture was very crispy and it was not too sweet. I ordered takeout and my order was quickly ready, but then again they weren't busy on a weekday. Overall good place for wings.

Solid Chinese dishes. Offered a cup of hot and sour soup to start. It was very good. Hubs had Mongolian Beef, a dish that varies greatly from restaurant to restaurant. It was one of the best we've tried recently. I had the egg fu yung; the portion was enormous and served with plenty of veggies and meat. Good gravy too. Glad they've reopened and renovated -- now spotless and welcoming. Owner friendly. We'll be back.

Chang's have re-opened after the fire. Its as I remembered: my steamed minced pork, 4 season beans; everything. Tasty dishes in a comfortable friendly neighborhood place run by hard working folks.

Dyno-mite! No waiting and hot and savory food at good prices! Across the street from the chicken wing palace that everybody waits in long lines for, this humble establishment languishes all but forgotten. Well, that is if you ignore their take out business. While we were bathing in delight over our choices, the phone rang every 30 seconds with door dash and take out orders. These guys were hoppin'! Not a lot of sit down business but a whole lot of business. Folks kept on coming in and going out with plastic bags full of morsels. Lots and lots of morsels too. Portions were generous indeed as well. Combine quality with quantity and keep the prices reasonable and that phone just keeps on ringing. That's what we saw. That's what we tasted. That's what we recommend. Like check it out you know. Do it today.

House fried chicken with extra sauce and white rice 10/10 every time. And staff so friendly and welcoming!

Grand opening so I decided to support by trying it out. The food was good quality but the portion sizes very small. The prices reasonable given the small potion sizes. It wasn't busy when I went and service was good. The restaurant was clean. I hope this business makes it.

I'm 65 and have eaten delicious Chinese food and I was excited to try "Chang's" after trying it, it seems to be the worse tasting food I have ever eaten!!! The food tasted like it was marinated in some type of chemicals or something but all of the order tasted "HORRIBLE!!!" My wife feels the same way and we will no longer return...NASTY!!!

This place is awesome. Sometimes I want some dry fried wings for lunch, but don't want an entire shareable portion. They have a great lunch special deal. This is peak San Francisco dry fried wings. Can't get them like this anywhere else. The server was very kind and the place was very nicely renovated while still feeling homey. I will be back!

Was craving Cantonese food, Chang's had good reviews so ordered takeout to give it a try. Overall, it's a 2-3 and would not order again. Dry fried chicken - we prefer San Tung's. Chang's is not as crispy (their signature) and more meaty. Salty fish fried rice - this was the best of the order. Factually, they have big chunks of chicken and salty fish if you like that. Sautéed string beans - we didn't like all the extras (white onion, carrot, jalapeño). The classic is better (green beans with minced pork and preserved vegetables). Seafood pan fried noodles - super salty sauce. At least one shrimp was old (the ones that fall apart) and one fish was old (funky taste). Noodles themselves are OK.

The salt and pepper halibut here is insanely good. Super crispy and amazing flavor. The dry fried chicken wings . This place is a small family-owned spot and you can really taste the care they put into the food. Always hits the spot.

Great place! We got the Szechuan dinner combo for two, plus the dry fried chicken wings, and it was all really good. The people working there are super nice, and it's just a very nice and relaxed place to eat a good meal with your friends.

People sleeping on this restaurant. This place brings back old school SF vibes. When restaurants like these were common. Good food, reasonable prices and large portions, being served by nice ladies that remind you of your aunties. And it's clean! All the food we ordered tasted great. We had the combination tofu clay pot. Ingredients tasted fresh and bountiful. Deep fried sole was amazing in taste, size and value for $20. They should highlight fried sole dish instead of the chicken wings they try to compete with Sang Từng across the street. Also the "Asian Fusion" is confusing. It's a Chinese restaurant with few creative specialties. Wishing they were more busy as I think they are so deserving of it!

Chang's Kitchen just recently opened again after 18 months of closure and I'm happy they did because the food did not disappoint. I went in to inquire about menus for large a group order and the older gentleman inside was very kind and helpful. My group was able to place a big order over the phone for pick-up. Everything was labeled neatly and packaged well with no mistakes. I ordered the Dry Fried Chicken Wings on the lunch menu and they were so good. They had a really delicious sweet and spicy sauce on them. They might even be better than some others around the neighborhood. Highly recommend checking them out for a lunch or dinner- great service and reasonable pricing.

Food: solid Chinese food, very flavorful, lots of sauce. they have all the basics plus some more. The sautéed fish fillet with basil was my favorite. Service: super nice owners, really attentive and fast. Ambiance: clean, basic pleasant decor. Price: Very reasonable for SF - $65 before tip for brown rice, fish, green beans, eggplant and beef & broccoli. Portions were generous and our party of 3 were full and had plenty of leftovers. Oh and the free hot & sour soups were a nice touch!

We came to Chang's after hearing it reopened and saw the line for San Tung was too long. We tried the dry fried chicken wings as well as the veggie chow mein. I thought it was decent Chinese food! I think it was reasonably priced and the service was nice as well. If you're wanting something quick and reasonably priced, def check out Chang's kitchen!

We visited today, Friday June 6, 2025. We ordered the Fish in Chili Oil Crispy Hong Kong Noodles Chicken Wings (includes more, but we ended up eating some prior to photo) Everything was very good. I will note that the fish was not as spicy as it looks. Good balance of fish, soft tofu, and bean sprout. Note I recommend eating with white rice to balance the flavors. For the crispy noodles, includes beef, fish, and shrimp. Very good also. I really enjoyed the chicken wings, tangy with sweetness. The order, I think has about 10 wings. Food arrived quickly. I really like this place, and will update. See photos Great service.

Lunch specials are large portions. We got twice cooked pork and eggplant in garlic sauce. The eggplant was very sweet and sour tasting. I'm guessing they used a good amount of black vinegar in it. I do prefer a more savory version so it wasn't quite my taste but the portion was otherwise large and veggies were fresh. Twice cooked pork was also not spicy. Some people do look for that so I'm mentioning it. It was otherwise alright. I plan to return to try other items.

I ate at Chang's Kitchen for the first time in September and instantly became a fan. Solid Chinese food, with shorter wait times and better value compared to that more-famous Chinese restaurant right across the street. FOOD // + Dry-Fried Chicken Wings: a lot of reviews have compared Chang's dry-fried chicken wings to San Tung's (the more famous one, but not necessarily worth that long wait); my verdict is that Chang's dry-fried chicken wings are better than San Tung's. The wings are sizeable and delightfully sweet-salty-spicy (but not too spicy, which is perfect for my weak spice tolerance). + Yang Zhou Fried Rice (Yeung Chow Fried Rice): fragrant and delicious. We cleaned every grain of rice off the plate + Sauteed String Beans: the veggies we needed! + Salt and Pepper Halibut: crispy outside, flaky moist fish inside + Singapore Style Rice Noodle: this was the only dish I'd pass on next time, mostly because the char siu pork was pretty tough to chew. Flavor was just okay. + Ginger Honey Tea: great if you're looking for a hot drink to warm up your whole soul. But to be frank, it tasted exactly like the ginger honey crystals I got at the Chinese supermarket; I would just make my own at home next time. SERVICE & AMBIANCE // Service was fast and friendly. Our waitress kindly put up with me attempting to order in Chinese, haha. There are both smaller tables and a few larger lazy Susan tables for larger parties. I saw quite a few people ordering take-out while we were dining in. Overall really good value and tasty food. NOTE: Chang's is currently closed for the rest of 2023 due to an unfortunate nearby fire that damaged Chang's as well. I'll be sure to come back to support their reopening next year!

We were in the area and San Tung was closed that day- we tried Chang's Kitchen instead because it looked very inviting and it said newly renovated. Our server was very nice and had a great sense of humor. Our food came freshly cooked and tasty! We ordered the chicken wings (so crispy!)- it's not like San Tung's but good! We also liked the tender greens w/ 2 types of mushrooms and the halibut fillet w/ black bean sauce. Overall experience is excellent and definitely coming back.

A friend said they've recently reopened and that they were a long time regular for years. I've never been here before the reopening, so I decided to give it a try. The place is clean and bright which I appreciate a ton. Aside from the yummy eats, Jenny, the owner is super nice and accommodating. The Salt-and-pepper halibut tastes great. Unlike other Chinese restaurants that use swai fish for this dish, Chang's kitchen used real halibut. Vegi's and tofu dishes are cooked perfectly. I especially liked the steamed pork patty. I was told that the reason why the taste and texture was so good was because the don't use regular port, but high quality pork for black-haired swine. It's a great place for lunch and dinner if you're in the mood for authentic Cantonese cuisine. The sweet 'n spicy dried-fried chicken wings are the best!

Service ansd food are really good! We got the chicken wings and the honey walnut shrimp which were cooked so well!

Had been a while since I've had Chang's as they were closed down for a while. Ordered take out recently and as always it's super fresh and delicious!

They're back and better than ever! So glad they reopened. Service was very nice and fast, and the food was great. If you're looking for a delicious bite with pretty large portions (shout out to the lunch special), this place is great. My wife and I got the Kung Pao Chicken, Mongolian Three Combo and the dry fried chicken wings (very crunchy), all were bangers. Highly recommend, especially if you're in a long wait at the other Chinese restaurant across the street...

First time trying this place out. Got the fried rice w salty fish, broccoli w chicken, salt and pepper shrimp, ma po tofu, beef w fried tofu, and lemon grass chicken green beans. Everything was excellent and only about $100!! Will definitely make this part of our rotation.
