Man Responsible for Bringing Mongolian Barbecue to America Has Died - Eater LA

"Colonel Lee’s Mongolian BBQ, founded by John C. Lee in 1969 in Northridge, Los Angeles, was a pioneering restaurant chain that introduced the Mongolian barbecue experience to the U.S. Patrons would choose ingredients from an all-you-can-eat buffet line to be cooked by chefs. The franchise became very popular in California before closing its locations. The particularly large Encino location is fondly remembered by locals." - Mona Holmes

I’ve been to several Mongolian grills and this is just okay. I’ve never seen one priced so high at $15 per bowl but I knew the drill and knew I could pack my bowl to the top. Well, the reality is that you can only pack your own meats and an employee will pack the rest of it for you. They do this probably to avoid a huge mess. Once everything is ready, they put it on the grill and cook all of it at once. You can ask for more sauce but it still doesnt add even punch to make it really worth a second visit. (45/100—2023)

Google
The owner is terrible to his customers and also treated his employees like trash in front of me and another customer waiting to see if he’d open. Also claims he opens at 10 but didn’t open until 11:30am…… extremely rude never even responded to me when I asked him what time he’d be open.

Sandy 99

Google
Way over priced, the bowls they give you are so tiny like toddler size bowl. The workers don’t put a lot of veggies and they didn’t put enough of the sauce. The food was so dry and the meat was hard to chew it was so disgusting never coming back. Definitely not the same as before. Not worth the $18 for a bowl!!

Google
I don’t think people realize how good this place is. First you order, either you just want the noodles, or add a side of rice and soup for an extra $2. I usually just get the noodles. After you order, they give you a bowl where you would choose your proteins. Either pork, beef, or chicken. Then you hand them your bowl once your protein is chosen and the staff chooses your vegetables for you. They also have tofu if you prefer that over the other proteins. And then they ask you if you want it spicy. And finally, they cook the food for you. It only takes around 4 minutes. Proteins are cut thinly so they cook fast. You don’t have to worry about it being raw. Of course, don’t expect excellent quality , it is mall food after all.

Love the food here. Fills me up super well and tastes great. I recommend getting mostly beef and some chicken, and whatever veggies you like and picking the spicy oil! (It's the type of place where you make your bowl and they cook it for you). It's worth the buck if you stack your bowl real big and high (which is allowed) and share it with another Person. Trust me, its enough.

Google
The meat tastes frost bitten and borderline spoiled. There is some sort of bitter aftertaste. It was horrible. This will be my first and last time trying them. The staff were a bit rude as well. It's unfortunate that this was my first visit and impression.

Babak Eliyahou

Google
The meats here are horrible. $17 for noodles that taste like nothing. No matter how much sauce you put on it, it has no flavor.

Google
Me and my husband were hungry and decided on this particular establishment. The lady cashier was polite. The cook named Alex however was a whole other story 😡😠😷 he ignored us was extremely rude and refused to cook our meat extra well done. We couldn't eat another bite and asked for our money back. 🤢😷🤒 we were so ill after that experience. All we ask is that you read this post and please hire personel that truly want to work

Yelp
Located at the Northridge Mall in the food court so nothing fancy. It's definitely a lot of food so I usually share with someone. You pick your meats and put it in a bowl then they do the rest. You tell them what veggies you want, then how spicy or mild you want it then they add your noodles to cook on the big grill.

Yelp
Bland as can be! I got the mongolian #1 this past tuesday night as I had to stop by the mall for something in particular and thought this place would hit the spot. I filled my bowl with beef, super frozen and when cooked, it was tough as hell! anyway my kids wanted the orange chicken so i went to another locale for them while my food was cooking. No color, no flavor it was plain disappointing, I had even opted for the spicy touch but it did nothing... maybe it was too watered down... anyway luckily for me, I could spruce anything up at home with some chili oil, soy sauce and Japanese BBQ on my frying pan and then my dish became alive! so sad I had to pay $17 for this product, save your money!
google avatar

Melissa B.

Yelp
I love that this place offers tofu! I tried the tofu veggies with noodles last weekend and I absolutely loved the flavor. The garlic and spices and sauce are so delicious! It was very filling and I will definitely be back!

Yelp
Found pieces of plastic on my food. When I complained to the employees they told me to shake it off its just from the meat. I asked for a refund they said they could only give me half because I had finished half already . I told them if I was a health inspector or something they would get a fine because plastic isn't safe for consumption, they said its ok the owner will get it not us. They basically dismissed me and said do what you please.

Yelp
I love Mongolian bbq and have tried other places, but none compair to this one. The noodles Taste so good here and the sauces that use to cook it gives it a delicious taste that I have yet to find anywhere else. The service has always been good and they cook it pretty fast. I usually add shrimp for $3 dollars.
google avatar

Yelp
Here's an update, Chan's is still good & fresh food, a great choice among all the food court options, however, recently we've found the beef choice to be just a tad on the chewy side, perhaps they need to buy a better cut of meat or have it tenderized a bit more prior to freezing. Still yummy & still a favorite!

robert l.

Yelp
Kids wanted this spot ordered 3 bowls. We get them home to taste spoiled noodles. It smelt off but once we got home it was confirmed to be spoiled. Attempted to call them, no one answered
google avatar

Yelp
This place is outstanding. I've been to all of the Mongolian BBQ in the area and this is the best. I'm vegetarian so I only eat the vegetables. Excellent. Fresh. Great service.
google avatar

Eric W.

Yelp
I've found myself in the Northridge Fashion Center (mall) repeatedly for lunch and often gravitate to Chan's. I like Mongolian barbecue, which is hard to fine all over L.A., and the "fill your bowl and watch them cook it" taste. They have four meats and a wide variety of vegetables plus noodles and sauces. You can also add soup and rice for $2 more. Plus, they have shrimp as an additional option. The food is super filling, noodles especially, and you get from register to barbecue rather quickly. It is fast. They also offer siracha and soy if that's your flavor. Can't go wrong here.

Catherine G.

Yelp
I've been coming here for a long time because I always loved the food, but today I was halfway through my food and I found a small roach in the noodles. I immediately lost my appetite. Won't be coming here again.
google avatar

Mark A.

Yelp
Terrible food. Chewiest beef of all time. Awful. Note: no shredded carrots, no scallions, no water chestnuts no sliced tomatoes. Other veggies are also missing. Because they cannot afford their food. They aren't selling so the options have dwindled. Worst Mong BBQ ever. Will never come here again. Just awful.
google avatar

Monica L.

Yelp
Good price for very mediocre food. Sauce didn't have much flavor and the only saving grave was the Sriracha I added. Their meat is dried and they reconstitute it with the sauce and heat, but it still doesn't make the texture that much better; it's pretty chewy. Would not eat again and wouldn't recommend anyone else try.
google avatar

John L.

Yelp
This place is a disappointment, it deserves zero rating. Meat taste like it has been out for a long time. Beef is tough and the quality of service is horrendous. The shrimp on the picture menu looks big but you will get small and old stock frozen shrimp. They will rush you and according to them, you won't be able to add anything when your bowl of choice makes it on the grill.

Jeremy E.

Yelp
I used to love this place as my family and I always enjoyed it. But recently the quality has been the worst. The noodles and meat were spoiled and looked like it's been sitting out for a while. Reason we know for sure is that my wife and I had it earlier this week and got food poisoning (I still have the stomach flu and can't keep anything down). I will never go here again and advise no one should if you don't want to get sick.
google avatar

Yelp
Such horrible service. If you can call it that. Maria is grouchy and r Tosses your food if she doesn't like what your ordering. She seems very unhappy with her job. You definitely should look into another profession lady. No one wanted to help when I was over her tossing my food. So I asked for a number for the owner and they didn't want to give it to me. Then finally only giving me the store number. I hope you s9nt visit this place. Food def NOT WORTH IT. NO FLAVOR.

Yelp
I have recently eaten here for my second and will definitely be my last. Pros: 1. first visit, the customer service was okay, can't really expect too much since it's a fast food. Service was quick and food was cooked fast. 2. They have tofu here, which a lot of Mongolian places don't really have. Con: during our second visit, my boyfriend and I noticed a weird, foul smell. We didn't really think of it since the custodians were cleaning the nearby trash bins. the lady who was helping us (really short hair) couldn't even remember what we were saying to her since she was too busy talking to her coworker. Please think twice about eating here. I'm seriously disgusted by the fact that they don't regulate the temperatures of their food and employees who do not care. This is a fast food place but they're still serving food that people eat. So please beware
google avatar

Yelp
Worst Mongolian food spot I've ever been to! You can't choose the toppings you want and the employees are rude and lack communication! I asked for 3 toppings and the ladies moved on to the sauces. WHAT?!?!!! The cooking guy literally warmed up everything in less than 3 minutes. SIR, how can the raw chicken cook well in 2 minutes? The noodles are disgusting. And I LOVE noodles. The sauces add little to no flavor. EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED. NEVER AGAIN. STAY AWAY! You're better off going to another food spot in this mall for way less money.
google avatar

Melanie G.

Yelp
Just came here for lunch. I was surprised that you couldn't pick out what you wanted in your bowl, except for the meat. When asking for my toppings, the lady was rude. Then, when it got to the person to do the sauces she just asked "mild, medium or spicy?" And I said "well, I'd like to know what options you have." The lady next to her said "just give her mild." So on it went. Then, as I watched the gentleman cooking my stuff, I notice someone throw in a bowl of noodles. I never asked for noodles, and didn't put them in my bowl. I've never been to a Mongolian place where they add noodles if there were none in your bowl. Anyway, I figured I would try the noodles but they did not look appetizing because they were very thick. I took one bite and decided to go back and ask if they would make it without noodles. This time the workers were even more rude. I told the veggie lady that I wanted bean sprouts, and when she put on a little, I said "could I get more? I eat those instead of noodles" and she didn't do anything and asked again what else. Then, I got back to the sauce lady and she was literally checking her cell phone and then picked up the ladles for the sauce. We just moved right next to the mall, but I'll never come here again.
google avatar

Luz S.

Yelp
These people hate their jobs. They were so rude. Maybe they just had a bad day. I don't know. I'll never go back to this place. Food was mediocre, barely gave any noodles and on top of that there was a hair so I didn't even finish my food. "A bad attitude is like a flat tire. If you don't change it, you'll never go anywhere."
google avatar

Julia S.

Yelp
This place used to be great but no it's quite terrible. I spent $26.11 for just 2 bowls and barely put any meat so I could have more veggies and noodles to share with my kids at home. They used to fill the bowl with noodles to the top, making $13 a bowl with the money...but now they put 1/2 the amount of noodles. When I asked the lady doing noodles to put a little more, since I barely put any meat and they used to put WAY more, she told me they'd charge me extra and the proceeded to completely ignore me when I was trying to speak to her. So rude. COMPLETELY NOT WORTH THE MONEY ANYMORE. I will not be returning here again, there are many other good food options in this food court. Thinking about it now, I should have just asked for a refund and gotten something better, but I had two kids with me that wanted to get home. Oh well, lesson learned.
google avatar

Cherry T.

Yelp
Found this plastic in my food and showed it to the worker and all she said was "ya ya I told the mgr already". What kind of response is that!!!! Rude workers! I always like taking my kids here to eat and now I need to find another Mongolian place to eat.
google avatar

Pedro N Lorina R.

Yelp
Worst experience ever at a Mongolian place. They charge .99 for a refill on a drink. They do not have a sign stating that there is a price for a refill. They also have a minimum on the credit card. Once again with no sign. So I am stuck with a drink o cannot refill all because they do not have a sign. When I spoke with the manager with the scar on her neck she was very rude. My husband was speaking and she very abruptly cut him off. They are sneaking in trying to get you to eat here with no signs because they know this will discourage guests from eating here. We have the owners cell phone number which is what the lady gave us. We spent almost $30 here for 2 meals and they do not appreciate customers. Pretty bad customer service if you would ask me! Don't eat here! They do not deserve your business!

Matthew P.

Yelp
So good! Best Mongolian around. Highly recommend. It is in the Northridge mall, in the food court.
google avatar

Christina G.

Yelp
It's sad this is the only Mongolian place in the mall. Definitely over priced for the quality of meat. Their meat always smells rancid. The staff working, especially the ladies are as rude as can be and you can tell they are miserable working there. If I could give this place -5 stars I would.
google avatar

Karla L.

Yelp
Not very good, very odd taste. The only Mongolian food I've had that I haven't liked. The staff was fine, just the food was wonky. Makes sense why there was no line here. Also way too expensive for bad food.
google avatar

Nancy L.

Yelp
I always enjoy coming here when I go to the Northridge mall. I think the plate is about $10 or something like that. Only thing is sometimes the meat gets dry. But there sauce and noodles are very yummy:)....customer service is okay. Just there to do there job.

Hana A.

Yelp
I used to be a faithful customer bc I shop here a lot but Panorama has always done the Mongolian way better! I stopped coming when my mom and I realized the veggies and meat were spoiled and had a foul smell. I Asked for money back and they only gave 1/2 back bc we ate some. They should've paid my mom and I for eating some. Recommend Panoramas Mongolian, not here!
google avatar

RR S.

Yelp
This restaurant is the worst. Extremely rude customer service the cooks are not being told the orders they just throw everything together. They did not listen to my specifics about my order. I said no noodles they put noodles on anyway they had to redo the entire order which took longer. I am not coming back here the worst!
google avatar

Desi P.

Yelp
Good Mongolian food for the prices since they pile it on. The line can take a while, especially at busy times. You pay at the start, get your drinks, tray and bowl. Then you fill your bowl with meat, hand it over to them for the veggies and sauces, then they hand or over to the cooks while you wait. Be careful of touching the tongs, I saw some guy wipe his nose then touch the tongs and use them for each meat, cross contaminating. Overall, I would go here again if I was at the mall and hungry for Mongolian.
google avatar

Marc L.

Yelp
What can I say Mongolian barbecue at its finest in a little hole in the wall Mongolian BBQ spot let me tell you something about this place I've been coming here for the last couple months and every single time I come here it gets better and better the food gets tastier the meat is a little Bland but obviously that's why you have the sauces and on top of that look at the picture I posted they pack it with noodles and meat it it's so flavorful I would definitely recommend you guys going here really bumped up this review there was a lady there by previous time I went was about maybe 2-3 weeks ago she remembered what I ordered down to the T of how much pineapple and how much extra stuff I needed it was really really attentive than just that extra customer service just blew my mind
google avatar

Dean P.

Yelp
After doing some intense shopping I was starving, I have not eaten mongolian in along time and I love it. I see many of the bad reviews but that was not my experience. My food was pretty damn good and I will go back.

Maria A.

Yelp
Server gave me a bowl to fill up with sliced frozen raw meat such as chicken, beef, and pork. The bowl filled up quickly because all the meat were frozen, there was no room to add the veggies: carrots, cabbage and onions. It's nice to see your order being prepared in front of your own eyes. But when I got home, I was so disappointed .. The meats were HARD/TOUGH meats... Just ate the noodles.. gave some meat to my chihuahua.. she had a hard time chewing as well!

Marcus H.

Yelp
For 20 years....maybe a lil less these noodles have been some of my favorites. Spicy I'm actually craving them as I'm typing this and it's 7:30am lol
google avatar

Dan D.

Yelp
This place was a terrible experience, the workers had terrible attitudes, rushing me to order even though there was 2 people behind me, midway through eating my food there was a few hairs stuck together that I had found, when I politely asked for a refund the ladies working the register refused to give me a refund stating because I finished half of it that I can't, um I would've finished my meal if I didn't find a wad of hair in my noodles, do not recommend at all

Julie K.

Yelp
I usually don't write reviews but my food is awful! Just got it few minutes ago and took a bite, NO FLAVOR AT ALL. I had to add some soy sauce and sesame oil to make it taste like regular noodles that taste like soy sauce. DONT EAT HERE. Eat something else from the food court. I know some of you guys might be like 'you're buying food from the food court. What do you expect.' But, to be honest, you're still paying 10-11$ for this food that you're eating. Honestly, their customer service is terrible, their food is terrible, and you don't get the sauces you want (she just dumps bbq, oyster, and teriyaki i believe without asking you). Don't eat here. It's nasty.
google avatar

Dave S.

Yelp
I like this place... but to be fair, I've never had any of their meat items. This isn't to say their meat items are bad, but I wouldn't know one way or the other. I prefer their large selection of fresh, crispy vegetables, of which they have a ton. They also let you pile them in your bowl as high as you can. Sauce-wise, they have a decent number of ingredients, but they're not labeled and the combination of which is controlled by their employees. This means your choice boils down to only spicy or mild. This is disappointing, but we are talking about the mall food court. What really lets this place down is the customer service. The ladies behind the counter rarely greet you or thank you, and they never smile. Transactions are short and to the point, with a minimal amount of words spoken.

Alexa R.

Yelp
Went here with my family tonight, our experience was terrible. we ordered two plates and were charged an insane amount of money for food that frankly tasted like putrid dick meat. i would not suggest eating at this deplorable mall establishment unless you wish to have a similar or worse experience. My stepdaughter happened to have an allergic reaction to the sauces they used (without her asking for sauces in the first place), which would have been okay except that they refused to refund her money for the food she didn't eat because it made her sick and it was "her fault". We were told by an older woman and a young woman that they would have to "see" the food in order to refund her...(BLEGHhHhH) *PUKE* gladly. So if you happen to be at the Northridge fashion center with your beloved family and wish to stop and grab a bite, this is the last place you should eat unless you enjoy being treated like garbage and eating food that tastes even more like garbage. Your welcome, Sincerely, Someone who knows what meat is really supposed to taste like.

Carmen S.

Yelp
Use to come here every so often because we liked the food but their employees weren't that good. The older gentleman who cooks is quiet but does his job well. The woman they had today as a cashier was very rude. My husband explained to her I had a food allergy and asked for my food to be made before his went on the grill (he eats something I'm allergic to) she first said they could go on opposite sides because it's hot where it won't affect the food (apparently she doesn't know cross contamination) and since no one was in line behind us he asked again to just wait for his food. I stepped away to grab a drink at another part of the food court and my husband overheard this lady say in Spanish why is he being so extra about it and that it doesn't make sense. He looked at her and told her in Spanish (he looks white but is Mexican) that if she had something to say about my health she could say it to him. She stayed quiet after but continued to speak I'll about us when we were "far" enough away. It's one thing if someone is just being picky it's ANOTHER thing if it deals with someone's health. I'm sure the owner doesn't want to have to pay my health bills for his employees stupidity

Yelp
Came to order mongolin bbq item #1. Put some meat, chicken and less veggies. I had a feeling that they messed up on something when they are cooking the order. They made it so spicy while my request is just mild on flavor. One of them almost gave my order to the customer. Bottom line, staff are are not paying attention, talking to each other while the other one on the cashier busy looking at her cellphone & did not even bother to notice that the water she gave the customer had a pinkish color maybe due to the drink that came out when she filled out the cup.

Ashley V.

Yelp
Used to be called Great Khans. I used to go here as a child when we would shop around the mall but now it's gotten way worse. The foods really good, but too many times we've gotten pale noodles, not enough noodles, or barely any vegetables. Plus the service is just awful. There is always this young girl who gives you attitude and looks miserable unless she's flirting with the guy cooking. If you try asking her anything, she'll look away and pretend like she didn't hear you. I've heard many customers beside me complain to her and she'll respond with a snarky reply that they have to pay however much extra - when she really didn't give enough. It's a shame because I really love the food and I find myself always craving it but dreading to have to talk to these people who look like working there is absolute torture.

Julia D.

Yelp
PSA ANNOUNCEMENT. I came here for lunch yesterday looking to have a nice noodle meal. The bin for chicken slices was out so I waited for them refill it before continuing to add to my dish. This wasn't a big deal given it was lunch rush hour. I waited around 5 minutes for someone to refill the meat bins and when the man came out with the new meat slices I was beyond disgusted with his process. The person refilling the meat placed the bottom of the container of the new meat directly on top of meat already on display to refill the empty bin next to it! I saw the bottom of this container and it had black marks and scum all over the bottom which came in contact with the meat to be sold to us customers. He did this while refilling all the meat bins so all of the new meat touched the dirty container of other meats. I told the cashier (who was on her phone the entire time this was happening) to do something about it but she didn't seem to care. I put down my tray and walked away with no appetite. Who knows what other kinds of CONTAMINATION could be happening in this establishment. The food is good but I would never risk food poisoning or sickness for a bowl of noodles. I highly suggest everyone steer clear of this place.
google avatar

Kriscia H.

Yelp
These is bad, is uncooked meat they don't even let's you choose what you want in it. they just dicided that you don't have a choice you already paid for the food.
google avatar

Steve K.

Yelp
Do not eat here. It is NOT Mongolian BBQ. You do NOT get to pick your own toppings yourself. Both my GF and I had our food ruined because they do not listen to you. The single star is for poor service. The lady dumped soy sauce all over my GF's dish which she didn't want, then they dumped noodles all over mine which I didn't want. Suggestion to the people working here, "Ask before you put anything on someone's meal". You ruined our food that I just paid for.
google avatar

Chris G.

Yelp
The Food was bomb but the service was wack on crack, rude up in here and not friendly.

Alyssa B.

Yelp
The noodles and meat is good . But don't get the works combo. The soup is literally water and vegetables . Its very pricey too. I paid $18 for One noodle plate a tiny bowl of rice , nasty soup and a drink! YIKES! The combo doesnt even come with a drink ! you have to ask for it separate. Cook time is pretty fast. The line seems to move quickly.
google avatar

David K.

Yelp
Been here many times. The food has never been very good. Maybe it lacks a chef's vision, or something. I don't know.
google avatar

Bryce M.

Yelp
I'm not sure why this doesn't have reviews... the food is Great!!! You can pick as much meat as you want for the same price, they pile on the vegetables and noodles and sauce and drop it on the grill for you! It turns out to be a lot of food with a lot of flavor and pretty healthy for only around $9! Will definitely eat there again!

Robert S.

Yelp
Food has a wired aftertaste. If you eat keto you need to watch them because they put all kinds of sauces in without asking you and add noodles even after you asked them not to. Some staff are borderline rude.
